Jean Grae is simply brilliant. In terms of wordplay, cadence, delivery, wit, harmony (yes she sings too) and versatility she's unmatched (Male or Female). I was around her movement in the late 90's to early 2000s with Pumkinhead, Badseed, Poison Pen and countless other "Underground Emcees". I wish the Strong Arm Steady era with Talib lasted longer but she put some great work out during that time as well. Real fans know and respect her relevance in Hip Hop. In terms of commercial success or recognition, i believe Jean never wanted to play the games required to be put on those platforms." This Week" is one of my favorite Hip Hop albums. Thank you for shining overdue light on her.
Jean Grae is also one of the greatest live performers. I've seen her live 3 times. She killed it each time. Also, she has the best between song banter and would probably do well as a stand up comedian.
There are artist whose intellect, style, confidence can’t be contained by the industry. I remember Natural Selection and the 9th collab as quintessential hip hop. Didn’t know she was still working. Thanks for this!
SHARING!!! Well done Def! As a fan of Jean Grae since the name What What and own vinyl of Natural Resource this is how you research and put out to the masses. I will check out your magazine Def Magazine as well. She is truly an example of having many talents and honing all of them.
Taco Day and Swing Blades.... just to name a couple. Her set with the Roots was epic as well... both sonically and visually appealing. Great video... she's been so underrated.
wow! i’m supercharged up! even tho i bought Natural Resource’s NEGRO LEAGUE 12” when it dropped, i haven’t kept up with Jean since checking out her TV show. i’m excited to catch up with her work, and let her impressive artistic offerings inspire me to level up this year & beyond. you have my sincere thanks 🙏🏾
Thank you for making this! I listened to her a lot for a few years in the early 00s, but I realize I kinda forgot about her and I now have a lot of exciting catching up to do
Im glad she changed her name What What is a wack name 😂 shes one of the greatest female emcee ever shes so underrated its criminal shame she never made it big
@@mlamberg female 😂 non binary bullshit I'm not feeding in to that nonsense she's female end of I don't care how she wants to define herself there's female and male period point blank but I'm here for hip hop not getting into that shitty debate and don't get me started on the trans bullshit 🙄
having learned all of this, having learned her name literally comes from X-Men, and seems to me like she drew inspiration from MF DOOM, it's surprising she never did a "battle" against The Villain himself. Would've been entertaining, and probably fucking funny as shit. "Jean Grae Vs. DOOM"
as a native New Yorker who was on the front line of early hip hop, I can see where her shortcomings were. Some of her word play with a little off but her stage presence and innovation and protection of the innovation of music sure our standouts. At the end of the day though hip Hop was commodified in the 90s . That's why the artistry aspects of the culture and of the musical art form were cast to the side. The 90s was the era of big business and the Ascension of hip hop into a globally dominant Enterprise.
Always loved Jean. Well done and deserved. In recent years, I wondered if she would ever collab with Issa Rae. Not necessarily rap-related, but I think it would be dope if it was.
Been slept on so long you'd think the entire rap game had been in a coma.
It's about time someone gave her her flowers🌹💐🌺🌻
DON'T GET ME STARTED!!! That's my super hero right there. 🤷🏿♂️
Indeed

Her Twitter account circa 2007-2010 was hall of fame worthy 😂
