So sorry both of you were so sick w/ the flu😐. Take care of that cough Miranda. Really enjoyed this even though I did not read the book. It is now on my TBR list! Sounds delightful! I often think I was born in the wrong century because I am SO drawn to and desire, old houses, books, towns, clothing; the atmosphere that enveloped in those things. I lived in A house in Massachusetts (New England) that was built in mid 1700's. Also a house in Romeo, Michigan that was built in the early 1800's. Quite the privilege and experience. My father was a historic reproduction builder. All the homes I lived in growing up in Massachusetts were built by him. He truly was Master builder, an artist. I am thankful I grew up steeped in history! Thank you both for the discussion
So glad to see you back! I am sorry that you have both been ill, and I hope you continue to feel better. I really enjoyed this book. The mix of memoir, history, art history, and nature writing was just fascinating. Thank you for recommending it.
I haven't read the book yet but I drive through Pembridge every time I pick up my daughter from University in Oxford. After hearing the discussion I think it is a must read for next month
Hello Miranda and Donna, I’m glad to see you are feeling much better. 👏 I listened to Gavin’s book twice! The first time I wasn’t concentrating enough and once I’d finished listening, started all over again. I thoroughly enjoyed the hidden history of English country life, and the book inspired me to look for a print of Brueghel’s winter scene to hang in my house, soon. Thank you both for that treasure. ❤❤
This book was a lovely companion (for me) to two television series: The Victorian Farm and the Edwardian Farm. Having had flu recently myself, you both have my deepest sympathy (LOL) and I'm very glad you're feeling better!
A wonderful book indeed. I now have to visit Pembridge! Thank you Gavin for sharing the reality of the past - I learned so much...both history and art! Your writing is exquisite - incredible to think this was your first book. I look forward to your next.
I loved this book and it planted the wish in me to one day go there and see this area for myself. And I have to go to Vienna again to see Breughel's paintings. Last time I went, which was also my first time, I solely focussed on Dürer's drawings and paintings. I love it when books give you new travel ideas. Thank you for choosing this book for the comfort book club. I'm so looking forward to the interview and the December issue of Seasons of Story to read Gavin Plumley's text and hear his voice! Have a lovely week, dear Miranda and Donna!❤😊
Thank you, Miranda, Donna and voicemail contributors! What a lovely book to read and discuss. Today, being a very mobile society, we are often disconnected from our roots and our past but Gavin Plumley shows that one can form a deep and meaningful connection with a home, a town and a region anywhere we end up living. Plumley's writing is eloquent. My favorite passage is on page 176 in which Plumley describes the wind starting with " though its high back also acts as a perfect shield against the winds... " The wind takes on an almost paranormal quality as he writes that it starts in the ridges and the bluffs racing down to the hills, and then along the street into the inn in which the high back of the settle protects customers from its raw chill. In my mind, I picture the wind as an entity that rapidly and viciously courses its way over the landscape until reaching the town and its inhabitants. Very nice!
Thank you so much for your generosity, Faith! I so appreciate your kind support! It’s a wonderful book, and, like you, I think Gavin is so eloquent in his descriptions of the natural world. The section you mention is so memorable: I can see how it stood out for you ❤️📚xxx
Hi Miranda - so glad you and your mum are feeling better Just wanted to, again, say how amazing Wintercombe is. It’s such a page-turner! I mentioned it before, in my comment from another vlog, that it’s the first of a four-part book series. I’ve ordered the second one (Herald of Joy) and look forward to reading it. I’m also going to start soon Hercule Poirot’s Silent Night! Your book recommendations have really made a difference in my life. Thank you!🙏
Thank you both so much for this video. I haven’t had the time to actually read the book :) but I am definitely adding it to my TBR list. It sounds very interesting indeed. So, thank you again and I am glad that you are feeling better 🎉
This is the first time I come to CBC having only listened to the audiobook, however as it was read by the author I felt it was a good second best! I love Breughel paintings (there was a great exhibition in Birmingham last Winter) and I was fascinated by his use of these to describe the English landscape of the 16th century. His writing is lyrical, his life enviable, his home sounds very desirable…..I’m going to have to buy the book at some point. Look after yourself in your recovery period. Now onto “Little Women”, read several times but this time I already have a beautiful edition bought second hand in Concorde, Mass.
Hello Miranda and Donna…another insightful video for The Comfort Book Club. I really enjoyed this book as I learned so much about history, art and society. This is the type of book in which I stop frequently to research something that is noted that I know nothing about. I love books that lead me off on different tangents. As always, you have opened my eyes to a new author. Thank you 🍂
Hello Miranda and Donna, I’m sorry that you both have been sick but relieved to know that you both are recovering. Thank you for this video and sharing this book although I was not able to participate in reading this book with Book club, I will be adding it to my books to read list. It sounds very lovely. I hope you both good health
I missed you, Miranda, hoped it was only a seasonal illness. Glad you look so well now. Grey morning here so great to join you. Can't wait to check out the book on Pembridge
I didn't manage to finish my copy in time for the Club episode, but it was interesting hearing other people's comments. I skipped quickly through some parts where it seemed too much like a text book, but other parts I have enjoyed and they will stay with me I know. It's an area I don't know at all so I feel I've learnt a lot.
I only finished this this morning and loved both it and your video! Looking forward to Gavin’s interview and essay too. There is so much scope to expand my knowledge of cultural history and a fledgling interest in art history. So happy you are both much better now and that you can track down the elusive vegetable xx
I really enjoyed this ‘episode’ and I can’t wait to read this book - I haven’t had the chance yet but I couldn’t resist watching! Rural and domestic history, nature and agricultural writing, seasons and art are all big ticks for me so I can’t wait! I was interested to hear that Donna is from Dorset and I wondered where abouts? I am from Wimborne originally which is a lovely little market town with a great book shop called Gullivers and also the minster is well worth a visit!
Nice to see you're feeling a little better. ❤ Lovely video as always. I will definitely join your bookclub in December and I'm so excited. Take care, both of you. ❤
Thank you Miranda and Donna for bringing us another really enjoyable Comfort Book Club episode. Like Silvia I had read this book in October by accident - I think Donna it is the draw of the cover that made me read it - well in my case listen to Gavin reading it. I would thoroughly recommend the audio book as a wonderful treat to hear the author telling the rich history of his home. A lovely book, thank you and I am so fond of carols I can't wait to find out which one you have both been enjoying! Teresa 📚♥
I generally read nonfiction but have read much more fiction this year due to your comfort book club. This was a nice break. I was most intrigued by the way the rural world was expanding in the 1500s, a process that continues today. Maybe we should all take a field trip to Pembridge? I do hope to see the Bruegels when I visit Vienna next year!
Hello Miranda and Donna. After listening to the book club comments I am even more excited to read this selection which finally arrived by post this week. I am still laughing at your comment, “Probably not a lot of people clamouring for turnips!” I wish you success in the quest this year! Your channel is a joy.
A Home for All Seasons sounds wonderful! I’ll have to read it. Believe it or not, I’ve never read Little Women (I’m 64)! I’m really going to try to squeeze that in with the Comfort Book Club!
Thank you for introducing me to this wonderful book. I reserved it from the library and it arrived in October. I read the back cover and was in! I expected it to be more about local history of the area and the house so I was surprised how much more I learned about English and art history. I also loved the nature writing especially the descriptions when walking his dog. I'd love to visit Pembridge and take a (discrete) peek at Gavin's house!
Sorry to hear you both have been unwell. You need to make some fire cider to help ward off the bugs for Winter. Always enjoy the book club chats. I live in a cottage that’s around 150 yrs old and I researched the history of it when I first moved in. I love old houses and their history too.
Hi Miranda and Donna! I'm sorry you both have been sick, but I'm glad you're getting better (you both sound really good, too). Wonderful video, and I loved hearing everyone's thoughts on this month's great book! I just finished reading "Little Women" (trying to stay somewhat ahead, since I'm such a slow reader) and am totally looking forward to hearing everyone's thoughts, since there's so much "meat" in the book.
Thank you Miranda and Donna. Sending you all the best for a full recovery. Gavin's book is very special and I really found it fascinating. He writes beautifully with such powerful imagery and I also listened to him read the book as an audio. For me the reality of bring the past to life made me very aware of how very hard life was back in the 16th Century. The Little Ice Age was so interesting and thinking about it I remember reading in a book on the Tudors that Henry VIII and his family rode their horses over the River Thames. As the book came to a conclusion I felt the poignant beauty of having touched the past and of the circle of life. I look forward to listening to your interview with Gavin soon.
So sorry to hear you've both been unwell but glad that you're both on the mend now ☺ this was a really interesting discussion - this isn't usually the kind of book I'd go for but I think I'll pick it up after hearing everyone's thoughts 🙂
Get fully well soon, Miranda and Donna! Thanks to both of you for this lovely, inspiring discussion. Have you read A Year of Living Simply by Kate Humble? I'm engrossed in that at the moment and thoroughly enjoying it. x
I haven’t yet read “A Home for All Seasons” but I just couldn’t miss a Comfort Book Club meeting, regardless of the spoilers alert. This book is delightful! Another one in a similar vein I enjoyed was "At Home" by Bill Bryson. Enjoy your channel so much, thank you for always having such lovely content and great book recommendations!
So sorry to learn that you have both been poorly and so happy that you are on the road to recovery. There seems to be a virus doing the rounds just now. Look after yourselves.
Hi Miranda. I notice you recently suggested giving a subscription to your your Bookish Almanac as a gift. However, I tried to join a few weeks ago and insta said you're fully subscribed amd that I'm on a waitlist. Can I check if this is correct please? Asking as I'd be surprised if you're suggesting it as a gift when there is no space available to join. Thanks, and I hope you fully recover soon.
That's very odd! No, it's not fully subscribed (far as I know, there's no limit on number) and also people have been subscribing recently with no problem. xxx
Thanks! So glad you and your mom are feeling better!
Thank you very much indeed, Carol, for your support and good wishes! I really appreciate your kindness! ❤️📚💐xx
I love how your book club brings people together from all around the world! Thank you, Donna and Miranda!
I do too! 😃 ❤️
