When I was a child I had a collection of Nancy Drews, Trixie Beldons, Lucy Maud Montgomerys, and Laura Ingalls Wilder books. This is what young Canadian girls read in the 70s and early 80s. I was heartbroken when they were all destroyed in a flood.
I have gone on to collect different types of novels in my adult life and have never replaced them. But I am truly happy for others when I see their childhood collections and that they are still bringing them joy. You have a wonderful collection.
I completely understand your feelings about Sundays. We all need to rest and replenish and I will enjoy your videos no matter when they are uploaded. That's the nice thing about youtube. We can catch up with you whenever it fits into our schedules too.

This video is a little jewel: so generous of you to share such precious books. Books can really mean the world to us for different reasons …my most cherished books are children’s books that belonged to my mother as a little girl and she passed them on to me. First she read them to me and then I read them by myself. When I need comfort, I open one of those books and reading it I can still hear her voice❤

Hi Miranda, Thank you for sharing your favourite vintage books😊 ! I found last summer in a second-hand bookstore in London a old edition of Miss Read's stories; It was in fact a old copy from Boots, when they had a library service in the fifties; a good book and piece of history too ! Have a nice weekend 😊📚

My most treasured book is a boxed set of The Lord of the Rings that I received as a gift in the 1970s. They are lovely hardbacks with foldout maps of Middle Earth in them and a beautiful embossed image of the ring on the front covers.

What a treat to see some of your amazing vintage collection! The covers are so beautiful and I always feel the same about signed copies by favourite authors, it’s a real thrill to think they have held that very copy and see their handwriting! I loved your tale of ringing Margaret Biggs across the Atlantic - how wonderful! There is something so special about reading a vintage book, often much older than me, and likely to outlive me too! Some of my most beloved vintage books are my Edith Nesbits, Lorna Hills, LM Montgomerys, Georgette Heyers and Miss Reads. I laughed at your mention of saving extra special books in a hypothetical fire as I sometimes make lists in my head of which of my books I would grab first (if I could!) in just that event! Thank you for another wonderful watch.

I am so glad you kicked off with Rumer Godden as she was kind enough to answer my letter with one of her own. Authors were kind and quick to return Letters in the '70s and '80s. I still have my mother's Dorothy Dainty, her 6th birthday gift which I loved as a child and found a teenage update only two years ago at the marvelous antiquarian bookshop next block from work, now sadly moved on. Shirley Hughes a very favorite of mine which I bought any current copy for my children. Thank you and so glad with your moves too, you retained so many from childhood. My favorite Mary Poppins edition was lost and Jan and His Clogs, a St Nicholas story. Your dear Mother is so thoughtful and diligent.

When I was a little girl in Canada I fell in love with a book called Petite Suzanne by Margeurite D'Angeli which is beautifully illustrated by her also. The map of the town she describes and the beautiful images of the Gaspe Penninsula in Quebec enchanted me, I used to carry this book around with me and read it over and over. I also loved her book- The Door In the Wall. These books have stayed with me my whole life.

Dear Miranda, this video was just incredible. You have so many wonderful editions, even signed ones, of your favorite books, that is so wonderful! I have collected Alison Uttley books since I was introduced to her by you, especially the books for adults. As for children's books my very favorite author is Astrid Lindgren and I loved her books as a child and still read them sometimes as a comfort as well. I still have all my copies from her books from my childhood. She is a Swedish author, I think not all of her books are translated into English though. I was somehow very touched by this video.
Also I wanted to thank you for all the seasons of story uploads of this week, you are such a hard worker. I haven't even had time to watch and read all of the new articles of yours, but I am looking forward to them, when I'll find the time! Have a wonderful week!

Revisiting favorite books from childhood is always fun. A couple years ago I discovered on a shelf in one of my closets a box full of Scholastic Books Services paperbacks dating from my elementary school years. While they by no means would be considered "vintage," they were all books I had enjoyed reading at the time. My favorite was Shadow Castle by Marian Cockrell. The most vintage book in my collection is one given to me by my great Aunt Mildred when I was 11 called The Voyage of the Mary Adair by Frances E. Crompton. It was given to her by a friend when she was a child herself. The book has a lovely cover with a picture of a girl in a sailor dress holding a model ship. There is no publication date but it looks like it would have been published around the turn of the last century. What makes it really special is the inscription that my great aunt wrote to me.

My most precious vintage books are ones with sentimental attachments - a 1930's edition of Wind in the Willows with fighter planes in the margin drawn by my late Dad as a child; and a 1947 edition of an Australian children's book called Karralta by Mary Grant Bruce. It was a favourite of my Mum's that she always reminisced about but had lost track of in childhood. I found a copy in my little local 2nd hand bookshop and gave it to Mum one Christmas, just a few years before she passed away.

What wonderful memories your vintage books must evoke! And that you (and your mom) were able to somehow snag so many signed copies - amazing! Your mom should be a professional book hunter, a book fairy of sorts, bestowing hard-to-find treasures on appreciative readers. There’s nothing like finding the exact copy of a beloved book that you’ve been searching a long time for😊 As for vintage children’s books I’ve collected - some of the Little House paperback editions by Laura Ingalls Wilder and hardcover editions of the All-of-a-Kind Family series by Sydney Taylor. BTW, I am a fellow lover of Maud Hart Lovelace’s Betsy Tacy series, some of my most favorite books from childhood😊

Enjoyed your vintage books collection so much. I also love vintage copies and feel so fortunate to have two from Barbara Pym's own library by Elizabeth Taylor (the author) and inscribed by Barbara Pym, both including the sticker "Ex Libris Barbara Pym 1913-1980". One is "Angel" with the inscription "Barbara Pym London-February 1959" and the other "A Wreath of Roses" with just Pym's name. A dear friend purchased them for me in Oxford at the sale of Pym's library at Blackwell's book shop. Another precious book is the novel "Death in Holy Orders" by P.D. James. My son stood in line after a talk by her in Chicago and bought the signed copy and had it inscribed to me for a birthday gift.

My family mostly only has old copies of adult books like geography books and such but as a young teenager when visiting my great grandmother she gave me an old children's novel about a little squirrel and his adventures with very pretty illustrations. It was from the early 30s and I think a friend gifted it to her. I took it with me as I likely was the only one who had an interest in it. I have randomly read a lot of children's novels from the different decades of the last century from different libraries throughout my life. I don't remember the names of most but there were so many stories that I think are just as interesting or relatable to kids today

What a lovely collection of vintage favourites, Miranda. Donna is indeed a book whisperer! My two special vintage books are volumes my father bought my mother in 1950s when they were courting, which my mother gave to me and which I hold very dear. One is a book of Rupert Brooke's poetry and one is an illustrated book of all Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales printed in Denmark (its in English translated from the Danish) with a Danish illustrator. It shows the stories as they were first written and far more disturbing than the watered down children's versions we are more used to reading. A good example that books once written as moral tales in the 1800s can be read and enjoyed by adults and children.

Lovely to hear about some titles in your wonderful collection. I don't think non book lovers would quite understand the special feeling when a vintage copy is found, especially if it is signed by the author. There's immediately that connection, knowing that the book has been handled by a favourite author. My School at the Chalet isn't a first edition but it is signed by Elinor Brent Dyer and a treasured copy because of that.

So many of my own favourites here. I think I first read Illyrian Spring in my late teens ( and Peking Picnic). I'm going to have to hunt some copies down I think. Elizabeth Goudge, Rosamunde Pilcher and Alison Uttley... all these authors have a very special way of writing and their books are on my shelves. My copy of Elizabeth Goudge's autobiography "Joy of the Snow" was originally my grandmothers, and it is battered and completely falling apart. So I'm thrilled that Girls Gone By are republishing it later this year. Then there's the Chalet School books by Elinor M Brent Dyer. I have every single one bar one - and GGBP are republishing that too shortly. I remember first coming across the Abbey School books when I was waiting for a check up at Gt Ormond St Hospital for Sick Children...funnily enough I was happy to wait for hours to see the consultant that day! Thank you so much for this lovely trip down memory lane. Oh and absolutely its right that you claim your weekends back!

I expect your mum had a lot of fun tracking down those books. My parents recognised I was a reader at an early age (my dad actually built me a bookshelf in my bedroom!), and supplied me with lovely books - some of which I still have. I remember The Naughtiest Girl is a Monitor by Enid Blyton, and I loved the Paddington books (one signed by Michael Bond).

Oh my word! What absolute treasures you are lucky enough to own. So interesting to hear the stories how they came to you. Thanks for sharing - wonderful video!
I grew up in the 1970s (pre-anything digital/internet) and I had a few favorite children‘s books. But because I moved out very early and kept on moving around I had to leave behind my children‘s books and most of them disappeared over the years. I mourned the loss of one especially - because I could not remember the name of the author. Or the title. Whenever I‘d hit a used book store or flea market I would browse through the children‘s section, hoping to spot it. I‘d ask book sellers about it, telling them the story, but nobody ever knew what I was talking about.
And then, more than 30 years later, we had just moved to Dresden/Germany from New York and it was one of my first trips to a „bric-a-brac store“ (really more of a hodge podge of broken bits `n pieces from the last decades) I found the book. I got so excited, I started tearing up. There it was! In this old and decrepit (literally holes in the roof and tarps over parts of the merchandise) building with only 1 shelf of books I found MY beloved book.
And then - I left it behind by accident. I was with a friend who was visiting and she ended up buying quite a few things and the vendor was very chatty and I was hyped and nervous - and either he forgot to put it in the bag or I forgot to grab it - but when we got home, it wasn‘t there. I‘d lost it again.
This wasn‘t a business with regular opening hours or even a phone number to call. It was just a guy selling old stuff whenever he felt like it. I did not sleep that night. Neither my husband nor my friend could assuage my fears that the book had disappeared again. This time truly forever.
First thing the next morning I drove there again. The building was closed. No sign as to when the store would be open again or even a phone number. But my friend spotted a bulging blue plastic bag wedged between the door and its rotting frame. We pulled out the flimsy bag. And there it was. Again, again.
    This time I properly cried.
I read it that very day and loved it as much as ever.
And now that I know the title and author, „Auntie Robbo“ by Ann Scott-Moncrieff has been my gift of choice for any reader in my vicinity. Give it a try, you might end up loving it as well.
Thanks for letting me share my memory - lots of love to you and your darling mum - Monica (currently living in tiny-town Austria) 📚🫶🏻❤️🐾🐾

I love hearing you discuss your favorite books! I'm a Rumer Godden fan, and have been since I first read "An Episode of Sparrows" as a kid, but I'm not really familiar with the boarding school girl type novels (even though I was a total bookworm as a kid, I gravitated more toward books featuring horses and dogs, as well as fairy tale collections and novels with historical settings), so I do enjoy learning more about them. I was excited to see you mention "The Daisy Chain" by Charlotte Mary Yonge, as I really loved this book when I read it some years ago. I also highly recommend another of her novels, "The Clever Woman of the Family." Anyway, thanks as always for an enjoyable video!

Thanks for sharing that delightful collection, Miranda, and I am quite in awe of Donna's powers in spotting the rare and desirable in books (at a reasonable price!). I have a grubby copy of John Julius Norwich's Christmas Cracker --1979 (found on a free table) signed by him which I am happy to have.

Hi Miranda, loved watching this! I’m fresh back from a lovely week in Bronte country seeing the sights with my darling Dad and managed to bag myself a vintage copy of Jo of the Chalet school in York Oxfam books! Your lovely Mum once mentioned the magic name Winifred Fortescue whose work I’d already collected and read as well as an inscribed copy! Treasure indeed! I did have them on a bookshelf by a window incase I needed to smash and grab! I adore what you do and want you to talk books forever so glad to hear your weekends will be for you! X

It was such a pleasure to see and hear you talk about your special books. I also enjoyed reading through all of the comments, about other peoples book treasures too. I too adore Alison Uttley’s essays and books, with thanks and credit to you for introducing me to her. I have managed to collect a good few. Even seeing one of her books with a handwritten card inside was a joy for me. My favourite Elizabeth Goudge book is a vintage copy of The Eliots of Damerosehay. I also have a beautiful blue leather bound set of Jane Austen’s books that I treasure above all other books and a Folio Society collection of her letters. I dream about having a Hugh Thomson illustrated peacock edition of Pride and Prejudice one day. I have a vintage copy of Enid Blyton’s The Magic Faraway Tree, it is the first book I fell in love with, I taught myself to read using it. I knew it off by heart, because I would get everyone I could to read it to me over and over again, when they finally couldn’t bare to read the story again and point blank refused to read the same book again… I wanted to read it again so badly, that I learnt to read it myself. I adore my 1960’s vintage copy.

Good morning. I am so glad you made the decision to move to Thursday. You work so hard for your subscribers that having a personal Sunday is much needed👏🏻 Yesterday’s discussion was wonderful. I love hearing everyone’s perspective on a book. One perspective that really had me thinking was that the father may have had Alzheimer’s. Hmmm, interesting possibility. I love vintage books and I collect dog books. I also have kept all my children’s books that had a birthday inscription to me. Since I’m in my 60s, some of those books are pretty old. Thank you for an enjoyable trip down your memory lane. 🌸🐾

A lovely video. I have a small vintage collection of Aus women writers, Miles Franklin, M. Barnard Eldershaw, Mary Grant Bruce, Ruth Park (a book from her personal library with her signature), Judith Wright and Henry Handle Richardson are some that I can remember. I've only really started collecting the old vintage copies recently but I'm finding it really interesting and most of the time I can pick some of them up for a few dollars. Although, the signed copies are too much these days. I saw a signed Miles Franklin for $800AUD a month or so ago and that was at a reduced price but I decided against it. I also look for their books secondhand in the green Viragos.

Some wonderful books there, with precious signatures and messages. Growing up in 1970s Scotland ( bit of a grim time, not much money etc) my favourites were Enid Blytons Mallory Towers, St Clare's, Secret Seven and Famous Five. My Gran would buy me the What Katy Did books and Heidi books, I just loved those. I must look out for some of those titles and read them, they sound delightful. Love your TH-cam channel and the Bookish Almanac community, and hopefully at some point I'll join the Substack and Seasons of Stories communities. Thanks again for another lovely episode. ❤

I’m not a huge reader, but the last thing I read that was my favorite that spoiled me from reading other books for a long time was the Mitford series by Jan Karon best I’ve ever read I cried for half an hour when I finished the last book in the series.❤. I Thrifted each book in the series series all hardcover very much a treasure to me.

I have some books also that, if I could, I would save from a fire. A 1944 hardback copy with color illustrations of Penny by Marjorie Torrey, my great grandmother's 1897 edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and my 4 Gail Rock books, A House Without a Christmas Tree, The Thanksgiving Treasure, Addie and the King of Hearts, and A Dream for Addie. As always, thank you for this lovely video ❤

That was interesting, thank you. I have vintage children's books, mysteries and classics. The thing that has struck me since I joined TH-cam, is that I have not read many children's classics that wasn't a Disney movie. The exceptions I did grow up with was Heidi, Charlotte's Webb and Little Women. I have read and collected many beautiful vintage editions of those books. The Little Prince, The Secret Garden and I am about to read A Little Princess for the first time. I never read The Wind in the Willows, which i just purchased and so many that you all talk about.

This was such a lovely video, Miranda, it made me feel so nostalgic! I’m trying to collect the books that I loved most as a child, mainly because I really want to read them again. Most of them were books I borrowed from my school library. The title I’d most love to get my hands on is Rumer Godden’s The Dolls House (it may have been A dolls house, I can’t remember.) Do you have this one? I’ve never seen a copy anywhere!

This was such a treat. I loved sharing your prize possessions. I have many sweet memories of beloved books and authors most especially Tales of the Arabian Nights. I read and reread a golden books version when I was a very young girl and since then have a very hard time passing by any edition I see in a second hand shop. I have quite a collection now and still feel the exotic thrill of these stories. Thank you, Miranda for inspiring another trip down memory lane!❤
