I was fit by a gentleman named Mike Dickerson in the Kansas City area for irons about six years ago. I have a very normal swing speed, but after observing me for a few minutes he put me in stiff shafts. They worked great. Unfortunately I no longer live in the area and won't be able to go to Mike again. He just said it worked for me and he saw a lot of seniors who were in too light a shaft for them. Thanks for your efforts. You know your stuff.
Thanks for the kind words, we will be back hopefully in a couple of weeks. Long story short this has been a banner year for the business, best ever, and I need to hire a couple more fitters to free up the video time.😀 but thanks for the nudge and support.
Your format of going through the sequence of trial & error setups, and then pointing out where you still want to find improvement, is fantastic information for the viewer. I'm very fortunate that I live a few miles away from TXG in Toronto, but if I was in your area, I would absolutely come by for fittings. Great channel. New sub.
Thanks for the feedback, those guys no doubt have raised the bar and im very fortunate to be able to say they’ve been an unbelievable mentor and friend.
Love this, I am on the opposite end of the scale here (107mph driver SS) and have been poorly fit into some X flex shafts over the years, which has affected my delivery. When being frustrated with it, my coach gave me a ProforceV2 HL 5f3(R Flex), and it felt way more comfortable and allowed me to pick up speed, move my path a more optimal direction, and have more feedback on strike location. I wish more fitters were comfortable doing this in a fit (but from my experience... none are).
Thanks for sharing it is a skill that requires years of experience, options to use, and the willingness to live in the Grey as I learned early on that black and white is just to specific and more then not almost never works out like you thought.
Great stuff. Learnt so much from this video. I’ve got a very slow swing but just can’t hit a senior flex. All over the place. Regular goes straighter and further and I hit the centre of the club face. Now I know why. May even consider a stiff flex after this when I get fitted for my next driver. Hope the fitter is as knowledgeable and creative as you but if not, at least I know what combinations of static loft, head weight, shaft weight, shaft flex (and I assume shaft profile) to try. If he/she is unwilling to experiment with different combinations, I’ll walk out and go elsewhere. Absolute masterclass! Thanks.
just found your channel ,and it so happens im looking for a new driver maybe new irons, and i also am 66 -67 y.o. in a couple of months so really looking forward to this video
Another fantastic and informative video John.....I took some of your advice and went in a different direction with my new clubs/shafts and made a very positive difference......you know your stuff as good or better than any other fitter out there!!
Damn John! This is exactly what I need/want! Can you work this miracle again with me? I hit my driver about 160-170 on a good day. I keep it in the fairway, but it makes it hard to reach the par 4s and 5s in 2/3. I am a senior gplfer and need more distance on my drives. I will try to book a fitting session with you ASAP! Thanks for continuing to produce these great videos.
If we can get our hands on the original we will for sure do a video. in regards to being longer I can’t necessarily speak to that but I can say it is more forgiving and higher MOI.
Great work with your customer! Were you also giving him swing change instruction during the fitting, or was this all the result of the fitting changes?
Just back from the driving range. Your info was bang on. My PXG gen 4 driver in 12 degree stiff shaft smoked the 0211 12 degree senior flex. John thanks for your tremendous advice. Now ,you have me thinking, should I change the flex of my irons from senior to at least regular. Any thoughts John would be appreciated. Thanks
It couldn’t hurt but I will through one more wrinkle into the equation, and that’s weight, especially with iron shafts, I would play around with different weights more so then flex, but the key is you never really know until you try. Thanks for sharing and best of luck to you.
We all have had plenty of fittings, no mystery we hit the ball better on the back nine, same near the end of a fitting we will tend to hit the ball better, could it be the shaft, could be to some degree. I never swing harder than 85% on the course, that stiff shaft would be a problem for a senior that needs nine to warm up!
Great comments and points so thanks for sharing. here would perhaps be a better explanation. one shafts stiff could be another regular, with that said this is why its so critical that an individual seek out the expertise of someone who not only understands the complexity around how shafts are measured and defined but also understands the bend profiles of a shaft and how that by pairing a particular shaft regardless of what’s stamped on it with a specific head to help the customer find center of face is truly the end state, for me I can care less if it’s a stiff, xs, or a ladies flex, simply stated whatever shaft that allows me to get center is the best shaft, and the best thing is that the data is what allows me as a fitter to validate the combinations we try. Thanks again for sharing, my man...
Good information. Having confidence to swing without reserve is the key to improving club head speed. What about a high spin ball to help get this players back spin up to 2,000?
Spin without question, is one of the most important variables to help regulate ball flight. But as we get up in age and start to loose speed we will start to loose our ability to produce spin. In this situation we moved the customer into the Mizuno Tour RBX ball. And we were able to add another 250 rpms of spin.
Wow, that was one hell of a Fitting John, great work! PS out of interest do you tell the customer that you are putting them in a stiffer/heavier, weaker/lighter shaft or do you just let the customer try it first? I know from my own experience if I'm told that they are going to try a stiffer or heavier shaft I immediately start reacting to the change, BEFORE I actually hit any shots with the changed shaft! But if the fitter just says give this a try, I react to how the shaft "feels" rather than how I THINK that it will feel.
@@SwingFit thought so👍 My go-to fitter in the UK Jason MacNiven (Ian Fraser's big Pal) does the same thing, never tells me anything until he is confident we have reached the point of the fit👍
I am going to try the stiff shaft. I am 64, but still very strong. I may be over powering the senior flex shafts. Cobra driver bio cell, set from 9 to 12, swing speed 80. So frustrated spins are plus 3000, many times almost 5000. Could it be the senior shaft? Straight, very little side spin. 175 yards and a bit now
The shaft could be impacting you, but if I were a betting man it’s likely more to do with you Angle of attack and the loft your currently using. Do you know if your hitting up on the ball or down on the ball. If your not for sure a good test is to pay attention to where the golf tee finishes. If it finishes kicked backwards then you are hitting down on the ball and very likely presenting the top part of the driver, if your hitting up on the ball the tee will advance forward and this would likely present the bottom part of the driver. Here we do want you hitting up on the ball so making sure to correct this first, and then adjust tee height second, then loft last… hope this helped.
Thanks for the reply. I have Garmin numbers. My aoa is 3 to 4 up most shots. I have tried all lofts on my driver 9 to 12. Just can’t get spin down. And the angles tell me it shouldn’t spin so much. The shaft is senior, your video got me thinking ?? Could it be the shaft.
Without seeing your numbers I would say there is a pretty good chance as one of the catalysts to step you up a flex would be increased speed, what you would likely see in your irons if this is an issue of it being too soft, is head never releasing through the shot and blocks to the right.
Last year I was fit into the TSi1 driver, 5W, and 4H. They all have stock Aldila shafts. My driver swing speed is currently 80-82 mph. Should I too be looking into a stiffer shaft? Total distance on a solid strike is 200 yards, maybe a little more. I live in Upstate NY if you can refer me to a good fitter. Thanks.
So the stock Aldila shafts are really good dance partners for those heads. And sometimes stiffer shafts can help, but it just depends. So you do need to go somewhere to test this and I’m not sure if anybody in your area, I do know the guys across the border at TXG isnt that far well depending on where exactly but it might not be a bad idea to reach out to them heck Make plans to see the falls and then head over… in regards to distance at your speed I would say your not to far from being optimal, 217-225 would be ideal for your current speed, so without question technique would be the the best way to pickup some extra yards. Stay tuned for a couple of videos we are going to be doing to offer some tips a 5mph increase can add as much as 10-15 yards and I help my customers find that in just a single session, so stay tuned.
Hi John Your an awesome fitter wish you were on L.A, my question is how does flex effect where you hit ball on iron face ? I find i hit the center more with a extra stiff shaft iron ,but I have a super slow swing speed. driver 85-90 mph 7 iron 60-64 mph . Thanks John
Thanks for the kind words. So it really comes done to the style of release you have, I like to put Sr. Golfers with short swings and slower speeds in stiffer shafts. I find the stability of the stiffer shaft hold up better in transition. Where as I sometimes like putting faster swingspeeds in softer shafts as they are moving it so fast that I almost need to help them create a little more lag. Not sure if this helped or not but just remember the true golden nugget is play what feels and performs the best, never put a label in your swing.😀

How long did it take you to figure this out? Should you go back to all the shmucks you sold a driver to that gave them 10 extra yards and bring them back in to put them in stiff shafts? I'm glad you figured it out. All men should use stiff flex. Let me say it another way...LEARN HOW TO HIT A STIFF FLEX MEN! I'm 155 lbs. and I'm 67 with a 70 mph swingspeed with my 7 iron and I hit 230 yard drives. Sometimes when the wind is in my face and the ground is wet I hit it 190. Sometimes when it's dry I can hit it 260. Why? How is that possible? I've never had a lesson or been fitted for real. BECAUSE I HIT IT STRAIGHT WITH MY STIFF SHAFT. Maybe I'll do a video. My new saying, Don't listen to the Democrat Party and don't listen to club fitters about what shaft to play. Except maybe this guy. And who knows if he just figured it out or he decided to finally be honest. Either way, KUDOS to this dude.
Well my man thanks for sharing your POV, as well as your results. I will say this and that’s, not everyone is created equal nor are they able to produce the same speed, release or consistency to be as optimally tuned as your results, this is why I can say without reservation that what works for one person may simply not work for another, because if it truly was that easy then ClubFitting wouldn’t exist. I have slow swing speed golfers playing Stiff and XS, but I also have fast speed golfers playing Regular and Sr. Shafts, no joke. So in the end the shaft that fits the best should be the one that allows an individual to find center of face on every shot and from the sounds of it you are playing it, so best of luck and here is to many more years of playing this beautiful sport.

Wonder if it's better to get fit at a golf store or at a golf company event.
Golf company if I had to choose...
Does the head on new models really make a difference.?
It can for sure. Not only from year to year but also from model to model within the same family…
Does that formula apply to irons also?
It does not and I really haven’t found a great one to use for them either.. sorry…
My wife also benefited from stiffer flex shafts. Make me think maybe most slower swing speed players are playing to soft a flex.
Without question.
Does the 2.7 ratio work for all clubs or just driver?
Yep that’s just for the Driver, for 7 iron I like to use 1.95…
