Dragon Isles were cut because the devs making the game in 2003-2004 clearly had a 20 year roadmap to include them after they concluded the Jailor’s story.

Blizzard doesn't make games to be fun, it makes them to make money. That's why Asmon's suggestion is just crazy talk. Devs cant think "what would be fun". They have to start with a monetization plan and then think how to implement it into the game. Fun has nothing to with this.

I'm really surprised they say all the solo content came accidentally when, at the time, Everquest's biggest down side was the inability to accomplish much once your friends logged for the night. Only a few classes even had the ability to solo mobs past lvl 12. The ability to continue to play once your friends logged was a major draw for WoW. It honestly appeared that WoW took a good look at current offerings and tailored WoW around meeting all the needs and complaints within other games but I guess being lucky works just as well lol.

I think coming up with new ideas in something that seems set in stone is harder than it sounds. It seems so obvious to us now, but I bet back then thinking Quests could be a main focus was a mind-blowing concept. the worgan was absolutely my favourite story line, made me wish the other races got starting quests that were that cool.
in cata the forsaken starting quest line actually had a couple of cool moments, like seeing the valkyr bring back a pile of cadavers, that one fresh undead who was a daughter of some crusader and seeing the gilneans accepting the worgan curse to protect themselves from the power of the valkyr, but the forsaken quests had alot more lulls in between and overall slightly worse pacing, additionally as far as i can recall i don't think any other race got even close to a similar treatment, which is a real shame considering how the preexpansion book was actually one of the better ones in an expansion that's all about drastic changes to the status quo.

Warcraft 4, plot twist being everything from Wrath on wards was a fever dream mixed with prophecies from the afterlife during the LK encounter where the adventurers do actually die because no deus ex machina happened, but equally Malgyos (the then in lore physical manifestation of magic on Azeroth before nexus retconned that) never died, but was aided in preventing LK rez Galakrond (which could double as the tutorial mission of hypothetical WC4) thus he, Nozdormu and Ysera interfered and tried to show the alt timelines (but LKs necromancy combined with the presence of Yogg mishmashed nonsense nightmares into them) causing the player to end up rallying the factions to destroy the burning legion, keep LKs ego in check/convince that turning everyone undead isnt required and depending on each of the 8~10 campaigns allying with WoWs biggest badasses.
Maybe to do what blizz wanted with SC2 initially with a siding/faction tie in alteration where you can join the Dragonflights or/and LK rezzing Galakrond as a big stick against the Legion, Old Gods in unlocking the full potential of the curse of the flesh or directly try yoink the Titans attention to fix their lost brother in arms.

Problem with PVP happened in Cata when they decided to inflate everyone's HP by a silly gigantic amount. They back pedaled on this finally in Shadowlands, removing the templates and allowing damage to happen again. Problem is that the abilities have too many external modifiers that aren't talents and gear, so you get stuff like Convoke and early Sub rogues one shotting everything.
Their systems they added conflict with PVP too much, beyond the PVP talents. They basically added the PVP talents just to rebreak everything with Conduit/Essence design.
There's a reason people want Wrath trees back and Wrath class design. It's because that was the sweet spot of having excellent damage in PVP, answers to CC and not too much HP on everyone.

    • @zeriel9148
      @zeriel9148 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@randomguy8196 Dunno about that, I played the most in TBC & Wrath and burst generally worked fine in TBC. The only issue TBC had was in 2v2 with druid healing being really hard to deal with due to lack of ability to burst through it with 2 players. But then Blizzard themselves said 2v2 was just for fun. Ironically 3v3 and 5v5 especially had the opposite problem with windfury shamans & burst being so overpowered that trying to defend seemed pointless. Wrath went even further in that direction with the launch balance being so bad that TBC players could only laugh and joke about the state of the game, with Ret Paladins (like you mentioned) & Death Knights being actual facerolling gameplay.
I think what finally killed PVP in WoW was them fucking around with item restrictions. First saying you couldn't use certain PVE items, and then just flat out item scaling. A big part of the interest in PVP was getting to see your gear do stuff in PVP, without that motivation it just became pointless.

I've come to realize, that a lot of WoW is just them throwing shit at the wall and seeing what sticks.
Which honestly is not a bad design philosophy when you're a popular name. You just have to carefully pick out the shit before you throw it, because some of it can damage the paint.
But I also see, that THAT very philosophy has sort of gone down the drain. Nowadays, they've just kinda resorted to sprinkling turpentine on the wall instead, because they misread what was successful about the shit that they threw at the wall in the past. It wasn't the fact that it was shit, it's the fact that it stuck.
I hope they can still find something in themselves to scoop it back up again...

I remember playing with my friends on a private server where they used Azshara Crater as an actual battleground / world PvP zone. They put up portals to the area in the capital cities and added some NPCs, similar to Alterac Valley. We spent the whole day participating in massive PvP battles and exploring the area. It was so freaking cool.

I really don't care how much hate I get for this but Ashran to me was the peak of pvp from a community sense. We had streamers vs hydra groups and world premades. You really could start to notice people's names when you came across them, assuming you did it regularly. It was just a good time despite its flaws, who didn't love holding the orb and flanking the enemy in massive groups, come on.

Man I miss ashran too. Evne though wod lacked so much, I didn't ubsub because I could always go to ashran and murder people easily and be handily rewarded for it, progressing quite solid per match or just having some fun. Easier as a rogue player at times naturally lol.
But the progression was good. All pvpers could attain solid gear respectively through effort invested, and outside of this, it was just fun to make raid groups and gank the alliance base between games. Most hilariously was when AA wielding players, such as druids with flying partially joined in on these sneak attacks for better or for worse. Great memories.
Most of all I miss the fun open world pvp and world defense chat. So many things weren't restricted back in wod, toys, items, tents, and the whole world was a battleground
Ion hazzikostasis ruined most of this and to this day won't comment on the lack of world def chat. Such a fucking clown.

Same reason people cry about AV, they run into 40 people, lose, and that's enough to decide that battleground is unfair, uneven and bullshit. You'd think nobody is really that stupid but people who say Ashran was a bad BG are that stupid. It takes somebody stupid enough to sprint into 40 people over and over again to forget how much fun Ashran was. The post-WoD version is very disappointing but when it was current content, that shit was popping. The only people who didn't enjoy it were bitter, moody wow addicts who only continued to play the game because it's all they know. If you actually took the time to learn how the zone works there was tons of content, solo, group, pvp, pve, misc but people only cry about the one moment in the BG where their base is being pushed in by the entire enemy team, as if they've never lost a BG in their life before.

    "You need a reset button"
Speaking as a disgruntled Destiny 2 player, trust me, you absolutely do not want to give Blizzard the idea that taking shit out of the game is adding to it.
Bungie for whatever reason got into that mentality a couple of years ago, and now every expansion starts with you losing more content than they put it. Thing is, the reason they do this is that now they can recycle that old content as new content. So they take out a raid a year ago, and in two years they'll give it back to you under the guise of it being brand-new content.
Every time you find yourself even thinking "reset button" just slap yourself, trust me you do not want that, and you won't realise it until they actually hit it.
Suddenly you realise just how much you wasted your time. Which I know you're thinking, "... but this is all a waste of time." but it's time you wanted to waste. I ran a dungeon 150 times, it was a massive waste of time, but I did it because I really wanted a gun and so as much as it was a waste of time I wanted to waste that time.
However when they take away that gun that you wasted that time for? It saps the desire to do any of it, and then you grow tired of the game.
If they ever did "hit the reset button" in WoW, that will be the day it dies.

They need to stop this whole "here's 4-5 new zones every expansion that are half baked and uninspired." They also don't expand on certain zone thematics or prop up any character gradually anymore. You could go do BGs/skirms for straight Honor OR farm dungeons for JP to turn those into Honor to get your blue set of PvP gear. There were also the "world quests" I'll call them, to kill a couple specific mobs in enemy territory that awarded you with weekly Honor if I remember right. After you got the blue gear, you farmed arenas every week for Conquest cap, and bought gear as you saved up the points for it. I was in the one of the biggest and best PvP guild on Aegwynn, so maybe the PvP community seemed more alive than it really was, but either way I had loads of fun doing PvP on my Feral and MM during MoP.

I don't know, I kinda think Metzen's logic about the Dragonflights is stupid. Sure, the dragonflights are "good" in the sense that they're not there to destroy the mortals, but its not like the dragonflights don't have their own individual agendas that couldn't put them at odds with each other or at odds with what the horder/alliance want individually. For example the orcs (even though they were "evil" at the time) actually enslaved Alextrasza in warcraft II and used her spawn as mounts which were the orc equivalent unit to the dwarven gryphon riders when playing human.
If Metzen (or anyone else) actually had a mind to, they could have easily written lore about how there is a conflict among the "good guys" (whatever exactly that might mean) and why you might actually be against some of the ideas of the dragonflights. i.e. maybe the cenarian circle wants to awaken malfurion from the emerald dream, but the green dragon flight doesn't think that's a good idea so there's a conflict between "good guys." That doesn't mean that either is becoming "bad," just that they have a disagreement about what the right thing to do is, and that sort of disagreement often leads to bloodshed in the real world.

    • @hunlepto2239
      @hunlepto2239 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@supermax64 That's actually an interesting way to look at alot of conflicts. The amount of times WoW uses mind control as a plot tool is just ridiculous. From a game called Warcraft, you would expect more that the point of conflicts would mainly be because of differing views.

I think Metzen’s logic is 100% why the game was at least serviceable for the time he was there. Isle of conq was badass during WOTLK when people hadn't quite figured it out as much, there were a lot of cool places on the map you could bait people to fight you in. Even just taking those resource mines on either side of the map whatever they're called, or like when they try to push into your keep, getting set up with a few players at the top of the stairs to create a choke point as they come through the door, or waiting beneath the stairs for them to run up past you to the boss, then running in behind them and popping cds, aoe fears etc. to mess w/ em.
Where it's at now it could use some balance improvements to help give a little more incentive to get people to clash, you don't wanna just base race and only rely on a small harassment team, it would feel better if there were different phases of the BG where it made sense to clash more, or putting power ups in particular spots around the map that overlook objectives to give people small structures and towers to fight over in order to make fighting at the objectives a little more interesting.

PVP in wow started to collapse once they went to the 'rated pvp' system which made the primary gearing method done through 2v2s and 3v3s. While this drove the competitive scene they wanted at the time, they forgot that the game is a MMO and most gamers think of big large scale battles as the draw for PVP. Just look at classic wow where guilds were going toe to toe all the time. Blizzard should have kept the large scale PVP as a viable gearing method, and built scenarios that could be a lot of fun for the larger scale community.

They could even set level 60/70 as max level and add no more levels and get you're new abilities and spells via class quests. Everquest was legenmdary, and obviously with the graphics at the time in 1999, it was lacking in some areas. But the community and gameplay were next level, and it was the cornerstone for all MMO development afterwards. I know it was laughably clunky at times and lacked a lot of things, but it was truly incredible in its era.

    • @michaelmorrison5280

There are still some things that EQ did better than WoW ever did.
Like the non-linear dungeons that were actually scary to venture into for the first time. In WoW, only BRD ever came close.
Or how every time you out-leveled a zone you were forced into a new zone that was dangerous for you to even AFK in. You never knew when some patrolling enemy would come up from behind you and wreck your day. It could be attributed to poor game design, but it regularly reinforced the feeling that you were just a small part of a big world, and that you needed friends to progress easily.
Everquest looked like shit to play (and it kind of was shit to play), but the feelings that the game inspired is what truly made it great. Staring at the text box watching your character lose or win rolls, trying to decide if you needed to run or not and how much HP you would need to have remaining in order to make it to the nearest zone line made the boring-ass combat way more intense than WoW combat was. Many fights ended up being a rng gamble and it was addictive despite how inactive the combat actually was.
If I play project 1999 Everquest for a while before going back to playing classic WoW, I very often feel bored with how easy and predictable WoW is in comparison. Granted WoW combat was great, there's just not the same level of danger and randomness that Everquest threw at you to keep you on your toes.

I loved Ashran and I love all epic BGs. None of the friends I played with liked them though. I think some people are too focused on getting a quick victory/result and not enjoying the battle leading up to it. It's not Fortnite...I want it to feel like an actual faction war, not a minigame. Some of the objectives in Ashran were a bit too minigame-like (like the racetrack), but I liked how it was always open. You didn't get forced out the moment you won or lost, you could just keep fighting. Almost like contested territory. I also liked how you could collect fragments to unlock special utilities, and it was a race to unlock them before the other team.
On one hand, I hope they make the game cross-faction. But on the other hand, I feel like the rigid faction system is part of what makes the large scale PvP so thrilling. I remember as a kid my family was all Horde, and I would fight against Alliance like it was personal. Now I'm more double-agent, but whichever side I play on I still get that feeling of being immersed in the role.

But back in the day, they were innovative with their *stealing* to make it their own. Instead of nowadays, they are too lazy to put a twist on what they stole. They would probably blatantly steal anything from an MMORPG that would help them to regain their #1 Position.
The Hugest amount of copium ever. Also doesn't help that World of Warcraft's Drop Rates is like a Gacha Game. The ICC Mount is 0.77% and there was another mount that is like 0.19% Drop Rate.
