The salary cap is making to many good player retire early. Geelong has proven that. There needs to be a veteran cap.

I remember that they had the rule where only 50% of the salary for players over 30 was included in the cap. Not sure about the status of that anymore.

There used to be a veterans allowance where a portion of a veterans salary was considered outside of the salary cap. I can't remember the details of the amounts allowed, but I know that players became eligible after 10 years on the list.
Ended up getting abolished as part of equalisation. I believe the view was not all clubs were, or always could be, in a position to accommodate the extra payments on top of the cap and therefore was a fairness issue between the rich and not as rich clubs.

Yep. Hawks fan too. Hate seeing 'ours boys' at other clubs but we have a tendency to get rid of our stars , our legends 2 years or so too early.
Mitchell , Hodge , Lewis, and Isaac .
Now Gunston and Tom Mitchell is just ridiculous Hawks again .

@@twomindz79 A lot of people don't seem to realise that this is what really happened. In the beginning Izzy probably wouldn't have chosen to leave Hawthorn. In the end they were basically forcing him out the door because of his age. Geelong have been the beneficiaries of this. Izzy has been too. Another premiership medallion, and a Norm Smith Medal on top of that.

Class acts, both of them. Even though Collingwood didn't make it, I was at the game and he was a clear best on ground winner. I really enjoyed the level of pressure for the entire game they applied to Sydney. The whole team played like they were in their late teens with a terrific attitude to team work and co-operation, so age became largely irrelevant. Geelong are deserving winners of the premiership.
