    Nice restore. Novelty locks are always quite interesting as ornaments about the house. I wouldn't trust it to secure a tin of biscuits though...

    • @matthewhopkins666
      @matthewhopkins666 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a novelty lock just a primitive design.
      These were known as smokehouse locks.
      You're right about it being pretty useless security wise but these style of locks definitely weren't made as novelty items.

    • @Thematt11
      @Thematt11 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@matthewhopkins666 This isn't a smokehouse lock. It's a modern (ish)reproduction designed as a novelty item.

      @@Thematt11 If it's a reproduction that makes it a novelty?

    • @Thematt11
      @Thematt11 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@matthewhopkins666 Well yeah, it's a reproduction that serves no practical purpose in this day and age and therefore has no value beyond being ornamental and visually pleasing.

    • @matthewhopkins666
      @matthewhopkins666 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Thematt11 It is identically functional with an original, the design of these locks was not designed to be ornamental.
      We clearly have different ideas of what makes a novelty item a novelty item.
      I consider something that was designed as a novelty at it's inception to be a novelty item.
      This style of lock was designed as a functional item not a novelty item.

      That really drives me nuts when they do that too!! If I've just bought something brand new I want it to look brand new. If I've bought something to restore, I may polish it up to look nice and give it a handsome paint job, but I want it to LOOK like it's something that's been restored, warts and all. The paint job might be new, but the pitting adds character!
      PS - nice job on the restoration!
