To be fair, the "kid changing the TV" joke has been done by dozens of comedians, from Ned, to George, to Jeff Foxworthy... Roseanne even did it on her show.

Yes I totally agree it's like when I hear some old school Comics talk about the 70s with having an old Wooden Tube TV that broke, they just put a another TV right on top of it. I've heard that joke several times and I never really felt like they stole it they were just reliving the old days! Only thing is some Comics tell the joke better than the other...👈🏼

Comedians often use alot of their back catalog for specials, George Lopez has been doing comedy years before Carlos was even a thing. That clip of Carlos was from a IIRC a 10-15min segment, where multiple comedians would fill an hour of stand up. So Carlos was 1 of 4-5 comedians to fill that show. My point being, is that George Lopez probably used that joke alot over his years before really making it big, and decided to use it in one of his specials, where as Carlos probably heard it at one of the shows George did, that had no networking and reworked it enough to use in this 10-15 min segment of his. I mean, he didn't just take Lopez's joke, but also the way Lopez is known for delivering jokes, his style. I use to watch mind of mencia, and never once did he tell a joke with that same type of delivery/stance. The only real thing, it seems, that mencia created was his "de de dee" catch phrase.

FlashMeterRed, that is absolutely true. He is a total hack, with the easiest, most obvious, staid and boring jokes. But in addition, he has stolen a LOT. Stealing, as in...jokes that are not obvious, and come from very specific situations, where often the wording is near verbatim to the original. I could excuse a couple of those as an accident, or "parallel thinking", but when you hear with your own ears, live and in person, over the course of years....dozens and dozens of lifted jokes that you could identify as lifted...that's no longer a coincidence.

Cris Lopez Even though it's idiotic and ridiculous to claim that all Mexicans "have the same life story"; it's irrelevant.
The joke begins as intellectual property from the point it was first used in a commercial setting; It becomes copyrighted material at the point it appears on a commercially distributed work.
While it is difficult for individuals to prosecute for a single verbal infringement (i.e. on-stage, theater setting); it is easier to argue a lawsuit after multiple such infringements, or infringement of distributed works.

Sure many people have similar experiences but as a comedian creates his act or performance there's many aspects of the way a joke is presented, --context, demeanor, the punchline, etc.,---that he takes into account. If you're creating something raw and completely original these aspects will be completely personal and unique. SO, when you see a comic imitate very closely the various aspects of another comic it's very easy to see that they're copying the other comic. It's not always intentional however and sometimes just cryptomnesia (subconscious stealing)...

I can name 5 other comedians that told similar variations of that exact same joke. Topical jokes and jokes about childhood experiences ( ex. How tv didn't used to have remotes) are very common in stand up comedy and They all tend to sound similar because you can only tell so many variations of the same joke. If you wana accuse people of stealing then they both "stole" that joke from sinbad, and sinbad "stole" it from somebody before him.

Whether or not Mencia steals jokes is pretty cut and dry.. IF you really know your comedy. If you perform stand-up, you see a LOT of comics. And in your down time, you watch a lot of other comics online. I did stand-up for 10 years, and used to sit in the back of the room with other comics while Ned (his real name) was on stage. We used to play a game and see how many lifted jokes we could point out in his set. We always found at least one, depending on how long his set was. One or two if it was a showcase, but 5-6 if he was doing a full hour or so. Whoop, there's a Lopez! Whoop, there's a Cosby from 1978 (seriously). Whoop, there's a Pryor joke from 1974.

George was doing these jokes years before Mencia. Also, George is OLD enough not to have had remotes in his household while Carlos was the first generation with. Besides, George writes many of jokes, Carlos uses writers. But in actuality, many stand-up guys steal from each other. It just sucks when they dont bother to change it up.

People don't steal jokes as much as you think they do. I was in the comedy business for years, and Carlos wasn't the only one, but it's not as rampant as you think. From my experience, most comics are pretty respectful of other people's material. What happened a lot in my comedy career was have other comics give me good lines to fix a joke, or take lines i gave them to fix theirs. It was a very "i got your back" community from my experience.

My brother named his first born daughter Melrose, immediately I thought "whats her middle name...
