I am going to write this in case it helps someone else. 1st part I have spent alot of money on shrimp and never really been that successful,my main problems were a couple of shrimp dying per week and them never reproducing ...not even getting berried. I use ro water with salty shrimp and i was even getting to the point of dripping in water changes over days to try and stop the deaths to no avail. I was now convinced this wasnt water related in the way i thought it was but it was in another way ....i was over feeding. I changed my routine to one i saw on this channel months ago ,feed on MON/WED/FRI at a ratio of half a pea sized piece of food per 20 shrimp . On the days off i feed a tiny amount of bacterial food ,pencil tip size. As soon as i did the above all my deaths stopped. 2nd part This was really simple as i had noticed a general lack of micro fauna in my systems...i increased my light times to 12hrs a day from 8hr. This will be different for everybody but this worked for me. I did this to try and encourage more algae in my tanks because i read somewhere that shrimps food in the wild is 70% algae. Well it worked ,the bottom of my tanks are crawling with life now, the first week after i changed everything i had 10 berried CRS/CBS mischlings. Of which nearly all of the babys survived :)
Thank you for the advice! I was in the exact same boat as you for the past two attempts I’ve had keeping shrimp. I’m excited to start a new shrimp tank soon
Also cant wait for the next vid in the series!! Could you tell me which active substrate you are using to buffer way down? I use ADA amazonia but causes alittle trouble with the ammonia leeching and seems to always push the TDS to 140 - 160 Do you replace your substrate once a year, if so would you recommend setting up the replacement tank so you can put the shrimp in there? Keep the great vids coming!
Thanks for watching Neill! Currently I use Controsoil, but I am a big fan of ADA Amazonia. The ammonia leeching doesn't quite bother me because I take so much time to initially cycle for shrimp tanks. I keep my TDS between 120-140. I usually don't replace my substrate, that is why it is important to get an active substrate that buffers for a long time. I appreciate the support!
That is correct Eric. Brightwell and Controsoil are made from the same manufacturer Marfled. I think now that Controsoil is no more, I will be switching back to ADA Amazonia or trying SL-Aqua's new Aquasoil.
Thank you for the very informative video! Btw, where did you get those logs that look kinda like braided rope? The one with holes? (Visible at 3:44). What are they called?
+DETAquarium Your welcome. Right now I have six tanks only one has shrimp and they are cherries. But some day when I retire I hope I have the time to try some more challenging shrimp.
I dont know anything about shrimps but love to watch the videos. The lights you using are they special light for the shrimp or for the plants. They look like full spectrum led's. thankss for sharing.
Thanks for watching Ruben! These LEDs are not just for keeping shrimp, I like them because of their quality, ability to dim, and how well they do grow plants. I appreciate the support!
How do you keep getting a good supply of rodi water without getting a system for it? I been keeping sakura shrimps using only tap water with good success since they are very hardy but i want to go into a more expensive species like the taiwan bees so i guess tap water is out of question now
Congrats for the video. I am looking for info about blue panda taiwan bee. I want to know genetics issue, how to breed different Taiwan to get it? Do you have any info to read, any link to study this item? Thank you
can you do a video or share some info on the subject of running c02 in a shrimp setup ? proes, cons, if its ok or harmfull would be very interesting as its a bit of a grey subject
Thanks for watching Luke! I potentially can, I definitely don't recommend using CO2 with shrimp setups, unless you are quite experiences in balancing your water parameters.
Great video with lots of useful information, thank you. I'd love to get me some Wine Red shrimp, they're simply amazing. I just fear the additional effort compared to my Neocaridinas. Well, may be some day...
Thanks for watching Dom Chav! I truly appreciate the feedback and kinds words. I do sell Wine Red, so when the time does come, check back with me. They are much easier than they once were.
Thanks for watching Alex. Going forward my plans are to stick primarily with ADA Aquasoil for Caridina. I may try some others along the way but ADA I know without a doubt works really well.
Anyone keeping Bees please reply. I have a heavily planted tank having Taiwan Bees. My GH is 5. KH 0-1, TDS 140-150 Temperature is 72-74 usually. No Amonia or no3 or no2. I use Distilled water reminilized with Sl Aqua blue wizard. However my pH is 7 and it is not going down. Will my Taiwan Bees breed in such pH? They haven't breed yet and I have them now for like two months. In your experience will they breed in 7 PH.
I think that depends on the brand. I use ADA and it lasts about 2 years before I have to switch out. If you help the soil to buffer by using RO or rain water and keeping the Ph stable and low it can last longer. From experience ADA lasts longer than shrimp sand for instance.
I got some red cherry shrimps, crystal reds, fire reds, orange shrimps...I put them in the tank as soon as I set it .. they seem to be doing pretty fine
+DETAquarium I had no clue that you gotta cycle the tank... I got some river sand...some aquatic plants...a rock... filled it with water...added a few drops of dechlorinator, a few drops of antifungal. Then I let the water rest for a couple of hours so that the dust settles down...and in the evening I went to my local pet store and got the shrimps...
+DETAquarium I think so... what are the signs of them being happy and sad? I'll observe them and give you a feedback so that I can take your advice on further actions...
What do you think about Controsoil still? still a good substrate to use? Amazon has a sale right now for 3L bag for $15 shipped. How long has the controsoil last you? (still buffering?)
Thanks for watching Jlui83! Honestly I am not a fan, and will never use it again. I have since switched back to ADA Amazonia, and plan to try the SL-Aqua brand soon. Controsoil did not buffer for very long in my opinion, it last about 1 year 2-4 months.
Thanks for watching Akeem! Great question. I actually stumbled upon shrimp my trying to find a way to eliminate algae. It was first the Amano shrimp I came across and shortly after the Red Cherry shrimp. After seeing these I found out about all the different species and variations. Now I am here today to help others. I appreciate your question.
You mention the substrate lasting for a year or so. My question is, how can you effectively switch out the used up substrate after a year, without forcing your tank to have to recycle?
Thanks for watching Aaron! Great question, many substrates out there leech ammonia like ADA, but others don't which makes this task much easier. If you have a spare aquarium then simply set up a shrimp tank again. If you don't have a spare, you need to find some container to hold your shrimp in for at least 24-48 hours. This will give you time to swap substrates out, check water parameters a couple times, and then reintroduce your shrimp.
Reverse Osmosis Deionized Water. You can get an RODI filter system for 150$ or less, they're required for a saltwater aquarium like mine. Your TDS of your tap water is probably anywhere from 100ppm-300ppm and when you filter it via RODI it is 0ppm, as in everything is stripped out of it except for the molecules H2O (atleast i think). You'll have to put essential minerals back in for fish, shrimp and plants if you want to use it for freshwater but its the purest way to do it, in saltwater everything you need is in the saltmix.
well done but you forget to tell a major fist rule with aclimating where a lot of people kill their taiwan bees!! NEVER put it on the ground while aclimating the nee shrimp. put it on a desk or on a bucket. this is to prevent the ground from lowering the water temperature.
Thanks for watching Nuri! That is a good point, I have never given that much thought as I normally place mine on a desk or the carpet flooring. TIle or concrete could definitely cool or warm things up. I appreciate your feedback and support.
You say it's super easy and you don't have to be nit picky with the water anymore and then you go and talk about all these types of re mineralisers for ro-di water - active substrates etc. why say it's not nit picky when it clearly is ?
I am going to write this in case it helps someone else.

Thanks for watching Spaztek12! I absolutely am thankful you shared your experience to help other hobbyists. I appreciate your feedback and support.
Thank you for the advice! I was in the exact same boat as you for the past two attempts I’ve had keeping shrimp. I’m excited to start a new shrimp tank soon
Thank you for explaining! This is exactly what happened to me! But I have never been able to figure it out
Good looking Bees you got there Det.
Thanks for watching BM! So glad to see you back on TH-cam! Been way to long, hope you are doing well. I appreciate your support.

+DETAquarium Contrsoil is no longer available, some are saying that brightwell is similar if not the same. Do you have any information on this?
That is correct Eric. Brightwell and Controsoil are made from the same manufacturer Marfled. I think now that Controsoil is no more, I will be switching back to ADA Amazonia or trying SL-Aqua's new Aquasoil.
Have you try landen soil?
DETAquarium I have a question, are shadow panda made with CBS or are the bbk, or both?
Thank you for the very informative video! Btw, where did you get those logs that look kinda like braided rope? The one with holes? (Visible at 3:44). What are they called?
Thanks for watching Ron! Those are called Cholla Wood, specifically Teddy Bear Cholla Wood. I appreciate your kind words and support.
do you have a forum that is your go-to for shrimp information?
Thanks for watching Molly! Yes, check out The Shrimp Spot forum. It is my go to.
Very good video! Some nice information
Thanks for watching T Holz! I appreciate the kind words and support!
+DETAquarium Your welcome. Right now I have six tanks only one has shrimp and they are cherries. But some day when I retire I hope I have the time to try some more challenging shrimp.
that's so cute to watch when they all swarming at one spot LOL!

+DETAquarium Thanks.. What's the name of the light's. Thanks again.
Micmol Aqua Mini LEDs
Very nice shrimp tanks. What lights are you using?
Thanks for watching Sel! These are Micmol Aqua Mini LEDs.

hi what kind of water do you use for the crystal shrimp, tap water or silver water ,thanks.
how often do you need to clean your cansiter filter ???
Congrats for the video. I am looking for info about blue panda taiwan bee. I want to know genetics issue, how to breed different Taiwan to get it? Do you have any info to read, any link to study this item? Thank you
How do u start the siphon
Can you eat them?
I haven't changed my substrate for 3 years in one of my tanks and it holds the pH at 6.3/6.4.
Great video man! What tanks are you using here? Are they custom or can you buy them? Thanks
Thanks for watching Liall! They are all ADA or Mr. Aqua rimless aquariums- 17g per.
What is the name of the moss you use?
Thanks for watching Scholtz! The moss is Mini Pellia.
Thanks for the video! Are you from Georgia? I'm from Texas and you sound very southern!
Excellent video!
Thanks for watching Corner Tank Corner! I appreciate the kind words.

Very helpful. Thank you.
Thanks for watching Neil! I appreciate the kind words.
Ok they like 6.5 ph but could I keep them in ph 7.4?
what substrate would you recommend the best out of the 3 aqua soils? do you think fluval stratum would be sufficient as well?
Thanks for watching Alex. Going forward my plans are to stick primarily with ADA Aquasoil for Caridina. I may try some others along the way but ADA I know without a doubt works really well.
Nice video can't wait for da next
Thanks for watching Pedro! I appreciate the kind words and support.

I wouldn’t know if they would breed in PH 7 but maybe try some drift wood to lower PH
How to cycle drip filter
Hi. You mentioned that the active substrate can last a year. Do you totally rebuild your tank after the year has passed or add more.? Thanks
I think that depends on the brand. I use ADA and it lasts about 2 years before I have to switch out. If you help the soil to buffer by using RO or rain water and keeping the Ph stable and low it can last longer. From experience ADA lasts longer than shrimp sand for instance.
Can I keep them in a ph around 7
I got some red cherry shrimps, crystal reds, fire reds, orange shrimps...I put them in the tank as soon as I set it ..
they seem to be doing pretty fine
Thanks for watching Roshan! You did not let your tank cycle at all? I would love to see a video on your shrimp tank. I appreciate the support.
Interesting! All shrimp are happy and healthy?
+DETAquarium I think so... what are the signs of them being happy and sad?
I'll observe them and give you a feedback so that I can take your advice on further actions...
If they are eating, molting, breeding, etc. I just haven't heard of many occasions where all shrimp survive from day 1 through a cycle.
What do you think about Controsoil still? still a good substrate to use? Amazon has a sale right now for 3L bag for $15 shipped.

i actually just bought some SL-Aqua soil. im doing a journal on shrimpspot to keep track of everything
Hi DET. What got you into shrimp?

Thanks for watching Irsyad! I keep my Taiwan Bees between 72-74 currently.

Reverse Osmosis Deionized Water. You can get an RODI filter system for 150$ or less, they're required for a saltwater aquarium like mine. reverse osmosis / de ionized
What liquid re mineraliser is that
Thanks for watching Stanko Jovicic! In the video I showcase both Lowkeys and MK-Breed liquid remineralizers.
What kind of moss is that?
Thanks for watching Drew! It is Mini Pellia. I appreciate your support.
Good video !👍
Do you sell your shrimps?
Thanks for watching Riki! Yes, I do sell Taiwan Bees and PRL.
Great Viideo, thanks!
Thank you for watching!
