    At my grandparents' house, we had an open well from where we used to draw water for household purposes. It used to have hundreds of glass shrimp . No one knows where it came from. This was around 30 years back when keeping shrimps in aquarium was not common.

    here in Canada I've conditioned my Cherry shrimp to survive in my backyard pond year round and I personally breed hundreds maybe thousand in 10 - 25 gal used aquariums. I keep my breeding stocks at around 16 to 26 degrees Celsius. I originally got 10 for 5 CND each and had 4 of them die within the first week but I just kept breeding them and now I have thousands.

      I'm making a patio pond that will be around 200 gallons. Do you think that's enough water to keep cherries alive over winter on South Vancouver Island? We have the odd cold snap... The water would probably dip as low as 8 degrees or so. I could throw a heater in to ensure it stays at 16 or higher? It would be awesome to have some little pond shrimp. I just want them to be happy/healthy, though. It's not worth it if they're suffering for 8 months of the year.

    • @TedH71
      @TedH71 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@steve-adams I would def add a heater.

    • @Vanillaflavouredcheese
      @Vanillaflavouredcheese ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@steve-adams I wouldn't put them in this year but if you spent this year breeding them in colder and colder conditions and introduced a large group slowly in the spring by the time winter comes around you should be fine but be prepared for large die offs some will likely survive though if you do it this way.

    Wish I learned about substrates before making their tanks. I bought some painted red that actually looked like low grade cherrys but after a couple weeks in my tank they started getting that deeper color back. In my other tank I got some really beautiful deep blue carbon shrimp but after a couple weeks some started turning transparent. I was told they needed darker substrate.

    I keep only cherry shrimp, but they are very hardy! I have 3 separate colonies in ponds in my backyard, i use them as food for my Fahaka puffer and i can scoop them up from the outdoor ponds and put them directly into the 180gal in my dinning room. The tank temp stays between 70f and 78f and the pond temperatures vary depending on time of year, but range from 50f to 90f and i plop the cherries straight into the tank with no problems! I wouldn't suggest doing this if you are just starting out and only have a few shrimp, but once the colony gets going, you don't have to baby these shrimp!

    from what ive read and also from my own experience, yellow golden back are kinda sensitive. even if you transfer them to other tanks with the same parameter, they tend to die. it took time to establish a colony for them.

    Dude its crazy to hear how the shrimp are fragile in a new tank.
    I bought mine in town, put their water bags in my backpack, went grocery shopping with them, then wore the backpack with the shrimp and guppy 35 minutes over a winding and bumpy road to my home.
    The temp was 80F and the water test came back good so i just put them straight in.
    I didn't lose a single shrimp.

    25 degrees is a bit warm. They can totally handle it, but I find 23 is optimal. With the drip acclimation I'd try to have it running at 1 drip per second. A knot is cool, but I've used an airline adjustable valve tap to get finer control of the drip rate.

I'll be keeping an almond leaf and all of my tanks that have shrimp from now on.

      I watched a video of a pro shrimp breeder who sells his shrimp to the public in Singapore. He said he's very careful with Sulawesi because even if you use a net to try to herd them closer to the glass, they can freak out and die which is exactly what the guy tried to do. One shrimp freaked out and died RIGHT THERE! The camera guy who was also interviewing the guy said he was gonna leave the room but the guy told him to stay because they're freaking sensitive that one will eventually die from sheer fright.

    I recently purchased 10 cherry shrimps and put them in a 22L community tank that has a male betta and 4 cardinals. Apparently the majority of them didn't make it as they just vanished in a couple of days... I may get another 10 or 20 as you recommended and put them in a separate tank and see how they go. The issue is that I only have a spare betta tank which is 7L. It comes with a in tank filter and a preset temp heater. Would it suitable for 10 or 20 cherry shrimps?
