No question, but a tip for Hudson suffering from motion sickness! It could have something to do with his ears. I can become nauseous when driving up or down a mountain. When I keep eating a gum or carefully clear my ears like a diver does, than it's a lot less noticeable for me.
#askGMBN Blake, what did you do to prepare for Megavalanche leading up to the event? I saw video of what you did at the event but what kind of races and training did you do before you arrived?
@@FunkadelicFlea good one. The person could also try not to remain still for long periods after ascending a mountain but rather move around slowly and get used to the pressure difference before descending the hill/mountain

Hudson- about the motion sickness. Possibly hyperventilating? You can get spasms in your hands by breathing too quickly as well as dizziness. I would agree, take a breather between runs and try to relax on your way down (song idea etc).
In regards to motion sickness question: I got the same thing when I got back in mountain biking and I was going down trails faster and more often. I kept looking 3 feet in front of the wheel and I started getting sick, I solved this by looking around the corners at where I was going to be. Fixed me ever since then.
About the question on how to remove a threaded rear thru axle, i have found that hammering a torx bit into place works really well as there are many spines that will dig in and potentially help to get the bolt out. #AskGMBN
3:30 my best advice, try jamming a torx bit in there, theyre usually a bit tappered and they are basically an allen key already except slightly different sizing so its easy to find a bit thats just the right size. first, preferably just jam the bit in, then get a ratchet on that bad boy and slowly apply force until 1, it becomes unstuck or 2. you break something ( unlikey) just gotta jam the bit in there real good and it should be fine
4:00 buy an easy-out set and ratchet it out. Should be pretty easy. If the material strips easily, then it should be easy to drill out. (Edited to correct auto-correct.... Yes, ironic)
As a chippy I have to deal with rounded off screw heads all the time. The first trick I use that gets round this issue 90% of the time is to get a bit of rubber (I use patches cut from old inner tubes) and putting it between the head and tip of the screwdriver / hex key then pushing it in as hard as possible while loosening the screw or bolt. I have also successfully used this to remove rounded off hex bolts on bikes.
Been preparing for my main enduro race of the season and I end up crashing at a drop on easy breezy Sunday ride, and hurt myself enough not to be able to race. Now it's another year until the race comes again and I am super bummed. Not only did I miss the race, but also intensive training camp that was just after my crash AND another race too, if I am not well enough to participate - shall see🤦🏻♀️ So I need all the confidence and mental boost to want to get in race shape again, thanks for the great vids and tips for it! 😄👍🏻
Just did a x1 driveline on an 2006 Intense Spider XVP. Bought a 9-speed Microshift Advent system. Inexpensive, beefy, strong clutch on the rear mech. Very pleased.
don't take the paint off, the paint is its own primer. once you're down to aluminum you'd need special primers to get a paint job that will last. LEAVE the paint on, scuff it, paint it
about the bolts being rounded off, sometimes you can make it work with a torques bit that a bit bigger than the allen size jam it in with a hammer then use that same bit allways when removing the bolt or change it, i rounded off the head on the front axle of my gambler dh20 and now i allways use the torques bit for one of the sides and an allen for the other, never rounded it again
3.30, the stripped Allen head bolt, take a larger Allen key and grind the first few millimetres of each side of one end at an angle so it is small enough to go into the rounded head, but eventually catches.
I’m in the process of repainting my aluminum fully. Agree with Blake, I’ve done a few and the better prepared the frame is, the better your dust control the better the outcome. I would add though, be patient, use multiple light coats and give each the recommended drying time between coats. Check out ETOE or fatcreations for inspiration
@3.55 I think Blake means a Torx key ? Personally I'd use a left handed drill bit. Torx (or anything else) that spreads the fastener can create their own excess friction.
I think ive found Blakes next challenge... Silk road mountain race. The 2019 race starts tommorow, so Blake has a whole year to prep for the 2020 race... 😊
On the stripped hex-head, use vice grips on the outer part of the bolt. You might have to break off some plastic to get purchase, but that'll give more leverage than a flathead.
Hammer a torques or multi spline tool into the hole usually removes damaged Allen bolts. Alternatively you can buy damaged screw remover tools, essentially a driver bit with a reverse threaded screw on the end, it drills into the damaged bolt then undoes it. Good luck
in the motionsickness problem do i personally think that it is down to the goggles. if they are just slightly splitting the ligh the wrong way can they make people either motion sick or get soar eyes after a while, either try getting other goggles or try with sun glasses and see if it makes a difference, can also be altitude as they said and can be fatigue which are both viable reasons and if you're really unlucky can it actually be problems with your balance center or balance nerve which may missfire and cause your motionsicknes.
For mega avalanche... start on the fat bike and then switch to Enduro.... kind of like some crazy people do on individual time trials on grand tours where it goes from flat to hills!
If you have an allen(Hex) screw that is striped, put a flat punch on the head and hammer it all around on top. The Hex pattern will be somewhat repaired. You will have to tap the allen key back in. Sometimes it's enough to be able to remove it.
Another solution for a stripped hex bolt is to use the same hex wrench but put a paper towel over the end. This wont work if the bolt is completely stripped to round, but if it's just a little stripped it should give you enough grip to get it loose.
If you are going to bring a fatbike for the mega avalanche event, make shure you put tire inserts, or pool noodles, the foam works grat, and extra sealant to plug punctures. otherwise you are good to go XD

Hudson Lucier could be getting motion sickness from eye strain. When you’re constantly refocusing on new things and going in and out of bright light and shadow, it can make you feel sick and dizzy. Worth getting an eye test to see if he needs glasses/contacts/prescription goggles?

#AskGMBN I've got a 2017 Stumpjumper FSR Comp. The stock wheel/tyre options are 27.5/3.0 or 29/2.3. I've upgraded to a 29/2.8 combo that I love! There is just sufficient clearance for the larger tyre, and the bike rolls over everything and has great grip. Only drawback... manuals got much harder. Is there some tweak I can do to improve manual performance, like go from a 60mm stem to a 45mm stem? Or should I just get better at doing manuals with the new setup? Thanks so much!
Yes, you can use a slightly larger Torx key and gently tap it into the Allen/Hex head. We suggest using a tool you don't mind damaging but pop to your local bike workshop as they can try get it out. If you damage it more it may become hard to get out!

#askgmbn Instead of a fatty for Mega why not try a 29+? I have a Trek Full Stache and it is a surprisingly good enduro bike. I have ridden some high end enduro race bikes and found the Stache is faster than any of them in loose sketchy conditions due to the big tires. It is fast in rocky conditions because the tires roll smoothly over rocks and retain momentum. It would rock the snowy sections of section of Mega and do well in the rocks and gravel. The trick to making it work is using good tire inserts that tame the tendency of big tires to squirm in turns and have too much bouncy rebound. I am using the XL size Vittoria Airliner. I use the stronger Bontrager SE5 3.0 tire rather than the stock XR4. I spend a lot of time smashing through North East USA rock gardens at speed without any failures on that setup. The stock rims are too flexy for high speeds so I replaced with Line 40 carbon rims. In case you are wondering I'm not sponsored by Trek. I just think the Stache, with the right setup, would be great at Mega. So the 29+ might not be as entertaining as watching Blake suffer on a fatty but it would be an interesting experiment of an unconventional setup
if i crash on let’s say a jump, it doesn’t hurt my confidence. i just get mad at myself for being so bad and crashing and i want to try it until i will succeed at it.

Vzwii I have a trek marlin 6 🤙
#AskGMBN hi I’m looking to buy a new helmet and I’m debating to get a full face or half as I live nearby bike park Wales I think I should get a full face but I often go on longer rides to so shall I buy a full face or half face or is there any other helmets to recommend for me on a budget.
Go for one you can switch the between full face and open face it won't be as cheap but it will keep you from buying two helmets
#AskGMBN Hi, friends! So happy you answered on my question last time. Now wait for more :) What are cons and pros of internal and external cable routing? Is it just a trend or necessary thing to have a bike with internal cables?
Blake riding Mega Avalanche on a fat bike. Let’s hope for a mega winter before Blake does it. 🤠
Do mega on a fully rigid bike 😂
Torx work well on stripped Allen bolts
#askgmbn i have a caliber bossnut evo
Which has an 130 mm fork and I’m looking to upgrade and get a longer fork what should I get?
150mm max
We have seen people running a 140mm fork on these frames 👍
Global Mountain Bike Network ok thank you
#askgmbn I just got an entry level mtb( carrera vengence) and looking to convert to 1x but I don’t know if I can fit an 10/11/12 speed cassette so I found a 11-42 tooth 8 speed cassette so will it give enough range or should I convert to a 2x. Thanks for the amazing vids.
A 1x has enough range a converted to a 1x10 and I just got the race face narrow wide and it was amazing
#AskGMBN my 12 year old daughter has a 3x7 freewheel (not cassette) big box bike with 27.5 wheels. Would you recommend converting to a 1x7 and use the shimano megarange 7 speed? If so, what size 1x would you recommend?
If you ever round a head on a bolt good trick to know get a torques bit that’s slightly to big tap it in and 9/10 it’ll come out. If not cutting a slot and using a screw driver. Hope this safe someone a headache
#askgmbn any advice for riding a bike park for the first time? Especially a solo ride. Loving the content back into riding after many years off and 5 hip operations at the grand age of 31.
Not that I don't enjoy getting wet and muddy in the winter, but I want something that I can carry on riding and trying relatable skills to MTB when I'm not in the mood for the wet! I've been looking at a Dirt Jump bikes and BMX for riding at an indoor skatepark/pump track, which would you advise? I'm 6'4'' so I'm wondering if maybe a BMX will be too small for me?
Hudson Lucier could be getting motion sickness from eye strain. When you’re constantly refocusing on new things and going in and out of bright light and shadow, it can make you feel sick and dizzy. Worth getting an eye test to see if he needs glasses/contacts/prescription goggles?
I have a carreara valor with a cheap sr suntor sprung fork and it has the death sticker and when ever i do a big drop thats more then 5 foot high it bottoms out hard should i get a new fork or or a new bike i paid €300 euro for it in halfords my halfords has terrable service and they bodge every thing like putting a presta valve in my shrator rim and they didnt have a hanger FOR THEIR OWN BIKE
Thanks so much!
should use star key driver slighty bigger and hammer it in stripped hex nut and use vice grips to twist that how i reomoved a stripped hex nut
I assume you mean Torx, then yes.
Yes, you can use a slightly larger Torx key and gently tap it into the Allen/Hex head. We suggest using a tool you don't mind damaging but pop to your local bike workshop as they can try get it out. If you damage it more it may become hard to get out!
@@th_js didnt know it was called that thx
On long downhill my right leg is going numb. I ride left leg forward, trying to learn ride right foot forward too because it will help little bit. Is there some kind of training what i should do to prevent that numbness? #askgmbn
I had a similar problem, started switching legs through my runs= all good
#askgmbn Instead of a fatty for Mega why not try a 29+?
I need to try that GoPro trick. I love my chesty footage but I always feel self conscious, like the harness looks weirdly obscene on a girl 😆
Damn I just ordered a small Canyon Strive and I'm 5'8". They recommend small even up to 5'10"!
if i crash on let’s say a jump, it doesn’t hurt my confidence. i just get mad at myself for being so bad and crashing and i want to try it until i will succeed at it.
#AskGMBN Hi guys thanks for the great videos. My rear tire has worn out , what's the best option: upgrade rear or buy new front one and use the old for the rear wheel.
Would it be possible to have tags of the questions that have been asked in the episodes as it's hard to remember when similar question was asked so would make it easier to find the answer. Cheers
#askgmbn are all mtb hubs the same? I want to get a 12 in the back but am worried that I’ll spend all that money then it won’t fit? And should I get a hole new drivetrain? I have a 3x8..
