      And I don't blame him. He's scrutinising the cutting edge of paper realistic computers. This is the direction in which a lot of people in the future may be prompted to go due to its applications in business, industry and education, if it turns out to be reliable, like Macs are preferred in many office environments today because they don't cater to gamers. What other e-paper tablets do is indeed fascinating. But it's hard to ignore the significance of achieving a 21ms input delay in terms of making a tool that is actually comfortably useful and reliable. And I'm a sucker for ebook/PDF readers, but it's been done before. It works, and is a software optimisation issue. I think reMarkable is trying to lead a revolution in pushing the envelope. So much so that, even though colour e-paper displays are being rolled out now, I imagine that reMarkable are gonna pull an Apple stunt, and not upgrade their devices to colour unless they can achieve a comparable improvement to their pen input, preserving the relatability with physical paper. Even if 90% of their other reader and navigation functionality continue to be crap, they will deserve recognition for their bold ambition, that seems to be casually ignored for similar all-rounder products. Say, even if they went bankrupt in a few months, I think it's safe to say they would be remembered with sadness for the quality they delivered and goal they tried to achieve.
      They gotta hire someone to fix that poor excuse for reader already, though. Gosh.

      This is just basic testing. There's even more stuff he didn't do that I would do.

    • @MyDeepGuide
      @MyDeepGuide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I totally agree and I would support them ignoring the color aspect until it can replicate the 21ms latency. However I think the ball is now completely in the software development department court and it really depends how they handle it.
      They have the potential to knock it out of the park with the rM2, but software side of things has to be taken way more seriously.

      @@MyDeepGuide Afaik a source told me they got a computing wiz to do algorithms and a custom pen driver on xochitl, the main system. Whether or not that is true, it is one arguably small thing that they really got working. But unless there's something I'm missing, they don't get interface design at all, and have no idea what they're doing with the readers.

    Absolutely best reviewer on TH-cam. Many so called "Reviewers" on YT, just play with an electronics device few hours at most and they give their opinions. But unless, you really use it for a bit and do actual work with the device that you start seeing the difference.
    And you are one of those few reviewers who actually do your homework. It is incredibly detailed analysis. I wish you can do similar reviews for other products as well.

      No promises, but usually on an ARM device, there are always a lot of issues with software and driver optimization that can slow down an early-release unit, which *COULD* get faster with software updates.

    So much better than the Good E Reader video. Thank you for putting all the work in regarding videos of this device!
    rM2 is so much better for comfort. The edges you described, the no buttons, the extra space on the left. Only the weight is worse.
    I think rM2 sounded harder and rM1 sounded softer.
    I would like to know if rM2 is more like a ballpoint pen than rM1. Could you tell me please?
    WTH, how the hell is rM1 faster than 2 in booting?! Has the same OS and rM2 has higher specs...
    And moving the cutout is straight up broken...
    Wanted to see the speed of picking all the tools, that I think is faster on rM2. But hard to test.
    Damn, screen is worse in the sun too... But like you said, hopefully it's fixable with software updates too. But then again... they are slow with that.
    Seems that the nibs will wear down slower on rM2, that's good. Looking forward to another video after you'e used it for longer.

In your reviews that the RM2 looks to have a better contrast with the black looking to be more blacker. Although I was shocked at how much slower the RM2 was. That’s a bit of a worry. It's very common that pre-production units are slower. Performance are typically the last thing focused on (functionality is usually first). It should be better when released, but they should have prepared for this for review units (and they may have, there may be other reasons for it being a bit slow I guess).

    So basically, rM1&2 are like two notebooks with different kinds of paper.
    rM1 awkwardly framed hardcover sketchbook with rougher paper and protruding edges that sometimes curl when you move your arm around.
    rM2 glue bound slim note with thin, finer grit paper that quickly absorbs your ink (also you're allowed to bring a mechanical pencil with an eraser).
    Somehow opening and moving stuff around is more efficient on the rough papered rM1, but it may be because the manufacturers of rM2 haven't quite gotten used to pressing out fine grit paper yet.

    I've just ordered a supernote. Originally I was tempted by RM2 and considered RM1. However, while I think these are great devices and many will prefer them, it's the size and future updates that the A6x offer that suits my needs better.
    One of the other things that persuaded me (apart from all your reviews, Voja, which are extremely helpful) is how quickly and honestly SN seem to respond to queries, whereas, ReMarkable don't appear to be addressing customers requests or concerns or even keep them in the loop about current issues and/or future improvements. Still it looks like an amazing device and I hope anyone who has either will get lots of use and enjoyment out of them

      I was set on ordering the RM2 but my ended up ordering the Supernote A6X. RM seems to have focused on the hardware and left the software behind. Supernote emailed me back quickly when I asked a question, I see them on the chat boards working with users, and it integrates with Dropbox. For me, it seemed like better bang for buck plus the form factor works for me personally. RM2 is a beautiful product there is no doubt about that fact but they could focus a bit more on software. None of them are breaking barriers at this point but Supernote just edges out RM to me - right now!

    Thanks so much for the review. I am wondering what you mean by “latency is imperceptible” though on the screen wise it is clearly showing the latency. Is it the matter of recorded video fps that’s kinda tweaking what it actually looks? Thanks so much, been waiting for this device for months!

  • @davidvvassallo

    Wow another amazing detailed video.
    By the looks of it Remarkable decided to initially focus most of their resources on the hardware and completely neglected the software, since the weaker hardware on RM1 is outperforming the RM2 which is suppose to be at least twice as powerful. This most definitely means that little to optimization was done on the software to utilize the RM2 new hardware.
    Remarkable probably hoped that people would buy their device and in the coming months/years they can focus on the software and fix the issues raised.
    Kind of disappointed they're shipping an unfinished product.

    Because of your reviews of the RM2, I decided to cancel my order (batch 6) and order the Quirklogic Papyr. Remarkable has had 3 years to perfect their software and , in certain major areas according to you, they haven't. The hardware improvements are stellar as it is a great looking unit. The problem is, for me, looks are great, but, they are essentially irrelevent. I wasn't buying it for its looks, I was going to buy it for its software performance. Software can always be improved with updates. The problem is the software deficiencies that you detail should not have been there after 3 years of development. What I would have expected was a state of the art e-ink notetaker and reader with software updates in the future to further enhance the unit and not play catch up by fixing prior deficiencies that should have been corrected, but, were not. Combine that with the less than adequate customer service and delivery details and I felt that I needed an alternative. At this moment, I don't think anyone readlly knows if there will be another delay or not and even if it will be delivered this year or not. Personally, I found Quirklogic's customer service excellent and the Papyr product, which is still in its infancy, to be very promising. I wish the best for the RM2, but, they need to make large improvements to their sales and product production processes. Finally, I want to thank you for all of the time you put in on your RM2 reviews. They were extremely well done and, in my humble opinion, were the most informative and unbiased of all of the RM2 reviews I have seen.

      I'm still deciding between one or both, leaning towards the RM2. Between the two, the feature set of the Papyr speaks to me more intellectually, the RM2 speaks to me more emotionally.
      The pressure and angle sensitivity can contribute a lot to expressing nuance in writing, and so the RM2 is likely the device I would grab if I wanted to write down my dreams before it fades, or a journal entry or something.
      The Papyr with its infinite canvas and ability to change templates each page sounds a lot better for planning and mind mapping and organizing and all that.
      Both devices are servicable in any of those use cases, and I'd probably be fine with just one, but if I had both that's how I'd use them.
      (I don't really draw or plan to use it much for reading PDFs or other books.)
      My big fear of the Papyr and all the Sony DPT hardware devices is that the micro usb charging port is the very clear break point of the device. I've worn out too many of those in other phones and gadgets to be comfortable having that. And because it's not Quirklogic's hardware, there is no guarantee there will ever be a second revision. It is nice the software is cross platform so at least there's no chance of losing all your work and you can access it in other ways.
      I'm new to learning about this category of device so please correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like the remarkable team has the hardware in their own control, and so now there's a 2, and if it does well there will be a 3. Will there ever be a Papyr 2? Is Sony developing another interation of the harware for other people to put their software on?
      If not for the micro usb port I would have bought a Papyr already for sure. As it is, I still might get one. It does offer a lot. But I'm in no rush and am still going to think about it

    My rM2 arrived today! I will surely compare it to my rM1 and see if the speed differences still exist.
    Edit:
    Some tests. rM1 and rM2 both 100% charged; rM1 version 2.3.0.16 (latest version), rM2 version 2.3.1.27 (as delivered; latest version)
    rM2 start-up was definitely slower.
    Both have exactly the same files (synced through the cloud). rM1shows 0.67 GB of 6.53 GB used, but rM2 shows only 0.56 GB of 6.41 GB used. And yes, I checked the trashcan: empty on both systems. It seems rM2 is more frugal with its storage. Better file compression? Different filesystem?
    Moving a selection was OK. I could not see a difference between rM1 and rM2, except that rM2 had no "ghosting" and the selection moved crisply and clearly. Definitely an improvement.
    Building thumbnails: no difference in speed.
    Page switching: no difference in speed.
    Duplicating a large file: same speed.
    Conclusion: Except for the start-up time, the speed is at least the same between rM1 and rM2. rM2 seems more frugal with its storage. The problems with the selection (select, move, copy, paste) have been solved.

    • @larrymarso4492
      @larrymarso4492 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SusheePerumal no. I'm sure he means he terminated cloud sync on the RM 1, connected in cloud synced the rm2, and compared the storage. You absolutely cannot keep the two in automatic sync.
      It is possible that the RM one has a series of temporary cache files, however, taking up the incremental space. Seems more likely than the unit moving to a new file system with a compression layer.

    Thank You for complete review. Can it be possible that rM2 startup is slower because software is not yet well enough optimized for two cores? Edit - You already answered...

  • @yarrow5355
    @yarrow5355 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm guessing the Software is tuned for single core. Dual cores could then be an overhead and in fact be slower. The software needs tuning/rewriting for multiple cores, but of course that would mean problems, or a slow down for RM1.

Because I use RM for drawing and some writing, I’m hoping the RM2 is the winner. • @BelovedDefender
    @BelovedDefender 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    With the increased battery life that we see on the Remarkable 2 that does makes sense that processing could be slower even with improved hardware. If the processing engine in Remarkable 2 has been optimized for battery life then processing time could be compromised... just like a vehicle tuned for gas mileage won’t win races against a vehicle tuned for performance. Might have been an intentional compromise. If the unit is still usable without annoyance under normal circumstances, (not side by side comparison), then for many people that’s a worthwhile trade.
    That’s totally just my own analysis of the speed differences, I could be wrong.
    If that is the case it could be cool if Remarkable team offers different performance settings via os updates in the future for those who would prefer speed over battery.
