6:06 that is either a “CD-ROM” or a “DVD-ROM” which are discs with computer files. We used to buy music on CD (compact disc) which was designed to reproduce music accurately enough that 98% of listeners couldn’t distinguish live from the recording. Later, they found ways to pack more data and we would buy a movie on DVD (digital video disc) which was the same size allowing a single drive to handle both.
Technically probably one of, if not the best videos you guys have produced. Sierra's monologue as poor old Billie soldiered on regardless was both entertaining, informative with just a dash of empathy for his installation hardships. And he really is a genuine jack of all trades - no small undertaking installing an A/C system into a boat with limited knowledge and resources. And the best part - you got the result!!!!!!!!! Thoroughly enjoyed!
I think one advantage of air con is it removes so much humidity which in itself will allow you to have much better sleep, regardless of what the temp might end up being. Even if it reduces the temp to 80 degrees with lower humidity, it will be a life saver.
As I watch Billy attack each challenge, I am 110% certain he is going to resolve all problems and the AC will be working. All these years, often times with minimal tools at hand, he has managed to get things working as they should.
OMG!Billy is absolutely amazing at installing Everything! Great "never say uncle" and keeps on working to the end. He took care of his brides wishes for sure. I'm betting his shower never felt so refreshing, right?
Over all these years, and I remember the first years, Billy has done so many things, and somehow he gets it right time after time. Billy can really turn his hand at anything. Billy is the man!
Billy, you did a stellar job. I’m glad for all of you that you have air now. Sending love from LIZ in California well actually now in Germany right now. 🥰💜🤟🏻
I replaced a 2 year old Dometic 120 volt with a new Mabru 12 volt unit and after two summer seasons on the Chesapeake I am VERY happy with the change. The Mabru is quiet and efficient since no inverter is needed. My 650 watts of lithium allows me to run the AC for 8 hours on the hook disconnected from shore power. In the summer months while at the dock I run the AC 24/7 on shore power. Thermostat set at 80. The Mabru has never failed. My Admiral is happy.
You my friends have just doubled the value of your vessel if not more. Billy 3 + days of installation not to mention the prep work you have done months ago for such unit. I would have lost my mind days ago. Job well done and now you get to reap the benefits 😁👏
I use a weather app called Weather Bug to track how far away lightning is, and it will alert too. I have had to rebuild my computer 3 times due to lightning strikes that hit right outside my building. Now I get alerts when it is 10 miles away, and as it moves in closer and closer. I turn off all electronics at 5 miles away or 10 if I am not right at my desk. It is peace of mind to not worry until it gets to 0 miles away. I live in Georgia so it is a daily thing with me here in the South as I am sure you two know from Florida.
Congrats! Boat A/C’s are FUN! Had to put a soft-start on our Marinaire 16K. Works great with the soft-start. 2nd lesson learned: don’t restrict (impede) the airflow inbound or outbound. Coils will freeze up and shutdown the unit. Best of luck. Boat A/Cs are AWESOME! When they work! LOL!
Great job installing the a/c unit. I have an old beat up travel trailer with window units. While they don't keep it completely cool they take out the humidity and with a fan blowing on me I'm comfortable.
I'm right there with ya Sierra. Being a fair skinned redhead I've always suffered from the heat. Heat exhaustion and sun stroke was a way of life. Now I can't afford to ac my whole house but at night in need to sleep so a unit in the bedroom is a must. Glad you finally got one. I know you mentioned it a few times over the years. Enjoy.😅
Buy 2 Ryobi 7.5" fans. You can triangulate yourself when working. And then you each have one for chilling in the cockpit. If possible mount a/c vent right by bed so it is blowing on you and you can use an adjustable fan to direct/boost the cold air onto you.
The man is installing ac and dripping with sweat and asks," hey hon, hand me that black coffee" the correct reply is " Yes, hon! what else may i get you!?" :)
Hey Billie, just a suggestion, before you cut big holes like that vent you might want to ask seawind to send you some local blue print of what's behind that particular wall. I'm sure they wouldn't mind. That seemed like it was a structural strong wall.
Back in the day, I stuck a window unit in the main hatch way of my Morgan Out island 41, Made the plywood cut out from marine grade plywood. Worked great, ran off 3k generator no issues..Kept entire boat at 73 degrees. It was a cheap fix. People in Marsh Harbor and Hope Town were amazed at the simplicity!! LOL Then we installed central AC, the headaches began! I live on a ranch now. Done with boat Maintenace headaches, done dodging hurricanes. JUST SAYIN BOAT = Blow Another Thousand. Do enjoy your vids.. As I did everything you are doing now.. Enjoy it while you are young without rug rats !
Just like you try to run the water maker when you have a lot of power, think about running the AC when you have a lot of power before the sun goes down. It's about knocking a couple of degrees off and taking the humidity down in the boat. Then later when you go to bed turn on the AC set for the warmest temp you can sleep at (try 78 and adjust if you need to). Also play with having shut off earlier (maybe 4 AM), and see if it stays cool enough for you to sleep until morning. If all else fails get more batteries and a bigger inverter or a second inverter to split some of the load up.
Air conditioning is great, while living in Roseville CA I had one in my house which I kept at 75 degrees and used fans when needed. But I moved to an area closer to the ocean - no air conditioner. On hot days I'm stuck in one area of the house under the fans. Air conditioning is very important. Loved your video. Stay cool‼️ Remember to VOTE‼️ 💙🇺🇸💚👍😇
20:04 a/c lesson: Breaker amps for a/c are much less than inrush current. The breaker does not trip because inrush current is not high for long enough time to trip the breaker.
We feel your pain, we’re cruising thru the Carolinas . It’s hot as hell. We anchor out every night and it’s miserable. We run our AC on generator till about 11:00 pm so it’s cool when we sleep but it’s hot by 4 am. We don’t have the battery capacity to run it off the inverter. Next boat will. Love the vids!!!
I empathize with you Billy having to endure the heat and humidity in your area. I live near Palm Springs California and it has been over 112F for weeks, thank goodness for AC. Why aren’t you guys in Newfoundland or the Pacific Northwest? Enjoy the AC, good sailing.
Yer great video Billy’s a star , you two are great together, pleased you made it work in the end , don’t think there’s much you can’t install on a boat , one of my favourite channels along with Duracell stay safe and cool lol😂love you both , G
Great video! Would appreciate a follow-up on a future video to let us know how quickly you were able to recharge your system using solar. Are you able to recoup enough power day after day or are you needing to run a generator or your engines to top off? Thanks for presenting this one...very informative!
Billy, after reading all of the comments, so far, it might be beneficial and time saving to post a reply that goes out to all of us instead of answering each with regards to the remedy for high starting current tripping the inverter, how you got it to work, and how has it worked out for you to date. Thanks for all of your sweat and hard work. Nothing shows true love any better. ❤
35 DC amps to run an AC unit is incredibly reasonable, so much so I am incredibly impressed.... We have a 14KBTU MarinAire unit that draws 9 amps on shore power - which up until watching THIS video I thought was excellent and VERY low.. but its almost three times what your unit is drawing.. I can NOT run ours on our modest house bank via the Xantrex inverter it just says NO... .. - I need to use a generator to operate the AC off shore power.. Perhaps with the engine running the alternator and external regulator it MIGHT work.. but at that point I may as well run the generator instead.. Well done on your guys for this installation..
Another thing I know wold help to reduce heat/cold, condensation and noise is to glue closed cellfoam everywhere you can above the waterline, particularly on the roof. That will also reduse the airconditions powerconsumption.
Another option is to install a small 8k unit for your sleeping cabin, HH55 ticket to ride did that and they have AC for sleeping but do not cool the whole boat at night. Doing that would lessen the drain on your batteries,
not sure how quiet the unit is, but when running a small generator ( to run a c ) at unfamiliar mooring can be a bit unnerving, because you can’t hear much going on outside all around you…so i’m a big fan of big fans…and you can leave ports and hatches open to allow air to flow and not be so isolated from your surroundings…they can do a pretty good job of reducing humidity buildup…but the big winner of the day is using baby powder after shower and before bedtime…like magic! always great content…the simple use of colored markings on halyard to mark reefing points is brilliant! cheers!
I just converted by boat from cable steering to hydraulic. I went with Dometic/Seastar. They were awesome to work with. Tremendous tech support. Highly recommend Dometic products and as a company.
Could you run your AC until it is cooled off/less humid, then run it on a timer once an hour and have a little fan running in the other times while you sleep? If the humidity is less you can sleep with the circulating air and the a/c kicking on periodically can help draw off humidity to keep it more comfortable. Sailing Zatar does that. .
Had to come back and edit comment😊Billy gets BEST HUSBAND AWARD🏅 Sierra, you would think drinking hot coffee would make you hotter but it doesn't. I live in Los Angeles, CA and during our heat wave with temperatures in the three digits. I still drink hot coffee☕😊
AC is a must and worth ever $ and energy power use. Good for you guys. I can't wait for you guys to cover or should I say. Cycle the earth 🌎 one time before kids. It's time for the med, Indian ocean and so on...
You def want an inverter unit because they use way less power and the variable speed is great for removing humidity. I wonder if they make a mini-split that can run off of 12V. That would be the best for a boat. No ducts.
I hate working on boats they suck...better you then me good job man you earned some good pootie points lol just the lower humidity will help a lot... yall be safe God Bless
Do a power consumption survey of everything that you are drawing power on first. You can then start looking at how you will be powering these devices. What does your PV panels provide? What Amp Hour battery storage do you have? Hopefully you have an energy efficient High Seer rated unit with a variable speed fan that ramps down to avoid FlA starts. AC can be done with solar but it is expensive and care needs to given to the proper equipment and the sizing and installation. AC cools along with removing the humidity hence mold is a constant concern. Good Luck!
The battery draw may be excessive--I used a large 12 volt capacitor to assist in starting mine. Which also helped with the start-up of anything connected to house batteries including winches and air conditioners, refrigerators etc.
Get. An “Soft Start” for the A/C. It cuts the initial start up load in half. It helps with not overloading on compressor start up. $80 - $115. Very easy to install. I have one on my Dometic for the RV. Problem solved.

They don't normally reply to comments so I guess I should stop watching and stop giving thumbs up.
they knew what it was and were joking

This looks like the installation of an airconditioning, but it's actually a love story.
You never said the issue with the AC. I was watching and hoping for an explanation on what was going on lol. I enjoy the mechanical side of the videos

Im with Sierra. No way in the world I could ever live without ac in that humidity.
Good, stay in the swealtering cities where we don't have to listen to your whining
Jetty the opportunist. Smart girl knows to never miss a chance for scratches and pets. 🥰
Freeze these moments together in you minds - they will be the gems of your life.
Thank you Mr Willis Carrier for your invention!
So great you got it running. Billy is such a trooper.
Air conditioning is a wonderful thing. I don’t think I could live in Florida without it. Damn it’s hot and HUMID here today.
It's worth it just to give Jetty some relief, the old dog deserves it, all though she never complains.
Leave a fan on even when AC is on. Helps move air in cabin.
Well done Billy

What a tremendous 💯% living space improvement. 👍👍

an explanation would be nice on why the inverter was shutting off.
Hilarious that they still include a CD with the product!

Sleep well and cool. Great job getting it installed. Jetty will be much happier with the AC, it's not like he can wear less clothing....🥰

I would suggest that rather than using mechanical gear clamps on your various fittings you invest in a hammer lock system.

Love you kids! It's nice to be able to sleep comfortably at night! Safe travels. ❤
How things change, discussion on powering a/c rather than the weight disadvantage, that’s a win for Sierra
LoL ! That is old age ! Smart move to have the A/C share with the water maker. I see a lot of sailors doing that. Happy Sailing ⛵
103F here in Arizona today. Thank the Lord for AC !

Red Hook! Ferry departure point for St John. Hope that’s your next stop 😊

That fealing when it is all working 😊😊😊😎😎😎🚢🚢🇺🇸🇺🇸
Good job Billy 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Stop at Tortola, Cane Garden Bay and catch a good swell!! You wont be disapointed!
It's an air CONDITIONER. Even if you set it for 78-80 degrees, it's the removal of moisture/humidity that is key.
BIG project! Nice job! Enjoy.
CONGRATS ON THE AIRCON ! ITS A MUST HAVE !
Being affected by heat, at night, that's called "age" hon. Happens in California too, why I am now in the Swiss Alps ;) .
You may try a hard start kit for the compressor sounds like it’s the initial start which can be higher than the breaker size.
Awesome. Glad yall figured out how to enjoy life
Get. An “Soft Start” for the A/C. It cuts the initial start up load in half. It helps with not overloading on compressor start up. $80 - $115. Very easy to install. I have one on my Dometic for the RV. Problem solved.
He said it has a built in soft start
