He was the one that made Hollywood Squares so popular. My brother and I were really impressed at not only how freakingly halarious but also every show he was right 95% to 100%. If they ever broke it down to which celebs got the most right, you'd see his name in the top two spots at least. I loved whatever he did. I especially loved him when he was playing Samantha's uncle in Bewitch.

    "Point and laugh."--LOL
It must have been so strange to be Paul Lynde. On the one hand incredibly successful--but in such a limited way because of that hilariously snarky persona. (He'd longed for respect as a serious actor.) On the one hand audiences "knew" the truth about him--and yet he could never ever publicly confirm his gayness or risk losing everything in an era where being homosexual was still seen by the majority of Americans as a deviant way of being. A great talent and a sad life.

Paul Lynde was scripted, he did not ad lib and all of his famous jokes are from other writers. He actually did not have quick WIT - what he had was razor sharp delivery. He wrote several humorous piece (For example "Trouble In The Tulip Bed") but he wasn't an off-the-cuff kind of comedian in the Jonathan Winters vein.. Search some of his interviews (such as Johnny Carson) and is inability to be that instant thought, instant joke is very obvious.

@@StephenDoty84 Hey!! All alcohol does (99% of the time) is lower your inhibitions so you say what is really on your mind. Apparently Paul was a fat kid, and that would make most people bitter, then add society's scorn for being gay...I don't blame him for being mean at times. Also, to YOU (and me) not using a coaster is no big thing, but it obviously meant, to Paul, that people were disrespecting his home, which he had been kind enough to invite them into

Kaye is not posting new content. She passed away in 2019. "During the 1961-1963 television seasons, Ballard was a regular on , as part of the Kraft Music Hall Players, along with Don Adams, Paul Lynde and Sandy Stewart. In 1962, she released the LP , on which she played Lucy van Pelt from the comic strip namesake of the album (with Arthur Siegel playing Charlie Brown), and dramatizing a series of vignettes drawn from the strip's archive. In 1964, she had a guest role on , playing a teacher for would-be models. From 1967 to 1969, she co-starred as Kaye Buell, a woman whose son marries her next door neighbor's daughter, in the sitcom , with Eve Arden playing her neighbor. From 1970 to 1972, she appeared as a regular on , playing restaurant owner Angie Pallucci. She made appearances on The Match Game."

Once he was Harry McAfee and did "Harry McAfee" better than anyone else could possibly dream of doing the character, all he was asked to do was play slight variations on Harry McAfee, under many different names. Lynde emphasized the angry, snarky side of "Harry McAfee" and Alice Ghostley was the resigned, long-suffering side of "Harry (Harriet?) McAfee". And the problem with "Harry McAfee" is that he's/she's hard to take in anything but small doses. Imagine if you had a friend or co-worker like that. Three Harry McAfee lines in a half an hour would drive you crazy. Imagine working with someone who delivered twenty. What a horrible situation for him to be in, in terms of his homosexuality. Everyone in Hollywood may have known he was gay, but not everyone in the nation, or else he could have just come out. An awful lot of people thought he was playing gay, parodying gays, anything to avoid believing that he was actually gay. Remember how some mothers wanted their little boys to grow up to be like Liberace, while they would never have said they wanted a gay son. Somehow, they thought it was all an act and so he had to go on pretending he was just doing an act. Sad.

So many gay men and women feel it's important to make a public stand and announce that they are gay. Paul Lynde never had to do that and didn't feel that he needed to. He was and everyone knew it, but there is something just as strong about staying in the closet as there it to coming out of the closet. This is why Paul Lynde's career lasted so long, his comedic talent and personal dignity about his being gay, but no need to shout it from the mountain top!

Heteros don't get murdered in the name of religion . heteros hold hands publicly and aren't beaten up for being open for whom.they live. Heteros don't get fired, thrown out onto the streets for being straight, they don't get discriminated for being straight. So you think gays should stay in the closet? You are wrong baby!
