    I use a planner, but I ONLY use it to track what we ALREADY did for that day (i write in it at the end of the day). I use the planner to keep me accountable and to create a 3 month summary on each kid for everything they learned in the 3 months along with goals and things that are working or not working

    Gina, this is great video. Everyone's season of life is different. There is no cookie cutter routine and no one "right" way of doing things. I hope this gives parents encouragement in their daily lives when things don't go according to plan.

    I’m so glad I’m not the only one that school work doesn’t work for during meal time! Meal time is precious family time but I have added in devotional (just a short read aloud one) after prayer. Telling them we are going to have God over for lunch or breakfast. They enjoy that and it creates a great family discussion starter.

    I have never once felt the need for a planner. Same as you, we just open the book and go! Sometimes I do look ahead and see what's coming, but that's just for a little more flow the next day.
    We also don't do any kind of reading during meals except a few verses of scripture to start the day. I don't know how other people do it!

    I do grading with our History, Science, and Spelling. But I just started it this past year. We use Teaching Textbooks for math and it grades them. My girls enjoy the grading.
    I started using a planner this past year and I need it to keep up with page numbers and test times. But that's all. So it isn't a big deal.

    I relate to all of those things!! I tried read aloud during breakfast this year and it lasted a week. 😄 did not work for us and I realized I was just doing it because other homeschool families were. I do reverse planning. My laws here are like yours but I want to see what we have done throughout the year so I can have peace of mind knowing I accomplished something. The last couple years at the end I felt we didn't have a good year so I want to see it written down so i dont start feeling guilty or like i did bad that year! I have the daily list book that you have! I love that thing! I only use it when we have a busy or different kind of day.

    Great video!!
    No grades here either (similar flexibility for homeschool in MI)! I do read during snack time (which is all day long it seems for my hungry kiddos lol) but mealtimes only if I’m eating solo after them while they play or whatnot. I do have a planner but I reverse plan now (was too stressed by not checking the things off)!!
    I also don’t compare, and we very much love the flexibility that homeschool provides. Taking extra time when needed, or skipping ahead as needed is such a blessing (and so much better to work WITH our kids, rather than making them “fit” what’s “expected” for their age). 😊😊😊

    Hi Gina! We don't do read aloud during meals either. Mostly because it's the time where the three of us (kid+husband+me) can get together during the day and just talk and also because I figured that if we did read alouds during meals, I wouldn't get to enjoy my food that much haha. I do have a planner though, but more than planning I feel like I have it almost as a diary of what we did that day, trips, outings and stuff.

    • @lifewithginab
      @lifewithginab  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    We do not have a set time.that we homeschool. We homeschool when we get awake and around for the day. A lot of the time my daughter eats breakfast & has play time before we ever start book work!
    I do not do grades in my homeschool either! I just mark the ones I need to go back over with my daughter and we review them together & go over how to get the correct answer.
    I haven't even attempted using a planner. It just doesn't seem like something I will be interested in doing. It just seems like more work for me that I don't have time for 😅
    Read alouds happen after school work is done or before bed for bedtime reading! No meal time read alouds here either.

    I read to the boys during breakfast, my husband is already gone for work by that time and I prefer to eat my breakfast alone and read to myself. When I was a kid, it was the same, I woke up early before my family and ate and read. haha! My husband's school doesn't even use A-F grading...I think more schools are starting to move to a different system that is more like "meets expectations/exceeds expectations" these days. I will probably start grading near high school age.

    • @lifewithginab
      @lifewithginab  ปีที่แล้ว

    We tried composer study and it didn’t work for us!!! we don’t use meal times for homeschooling!!! Growing up our meals where a time for family discussions and I’ve kept this tradition as well as I can hear my kids speak about what is on their minds!!! We don’t grade either and our state allows a pass or fail for high school!!! I hardly Plan and only plan our books for homeschool!!! I left reading Till my daughter asked for it and she was trying to read herself!!! We are taking it at her pace!!! I have 2 that are on the university path but couldn’t be in public school due to learning issues!!! We have a flexible schedule for homeschooling and we find year round helps us with homeschooling!!!

    We don't grade either. Honestly what is the point unless State/provincial requires. In BC if you are a true homeschooler (you can do whatever you want) you dont need to submit reports or grades. My daughter is only 5 so i do all subjects with her. But sometimes she's doing something she knows how to and i just step into the kitchen (can see her in the dining room) to finish cleaning from breakfast or whatnot (usually like 5 mins) and when i go back to her if something is wrong i tell her to erase and re do. Thats it.
