Films like this is what this generation needs. I have 13 and 15 year old sister and does not know about people like Sam Cooke and other celebrities who in that day was an activist and truly wanted to make a change. Same Cooke wanted to bring Martin Luther King JR and Malcom X together. He was hurt by the things that was going on around him and truly wanted to make a difference for his people. This movie showed people how in fact Malcom X could have truly felt scared or alone for the step he was about to take for he would be going against a whole nation of people who basically worshipped a man vs truly trying to get inspiration from their religion. You had Jim Brown who knew the only reason Esau liked him was because he ran up and down a field and made them money but outside of that he was just another by word to them. He knew that if he wanted to have a feeling of freedom for himself NFL was not the way to go. Muhammed Ali was the glue of them all truly. He knew them all and just wanted them all to come together and make a difference in the world. We need our kids to see more films like this and other movies like birth of a nation to see that our people didn't just give in we fought too and we need to teach our kids about how before slavery we ruled the world and why now we are in the state that we are in now.

I absolutely loved this movie from beginning to end. The first few minuets drew me in. I was so emotionally, physically and mentally attached to this movie from beginning to end. At times during the movie, I forgot to breath, because back then, the truth was being told as well as the future prediction. All the characters were on hit, magnificent and amazing. I must say that the one that stood out just a little bit more than the other was Malcom X. I felt like I was really looking at the recantation of Malcolm x. The actor was outstanding. You can tell that he embedded his soul and spirit into that role. I felt and pure sincerity with him. But the other I felt the same as well. 10 Thumbs up to the Queen on her Direct-oral Debut Regina King. This was an Extraordinary film that was made . I felt like this movie was on for more hours than it actually was. This movie was made with Greatness. Congrats Regina. A job well done.. Much Love to my sister in Christ . Continue to reach the stars. As Jesus always does. Regina, you showed up and showed out !!!!🙏🏽❤️

Having seen so many documentaries about Malcolm X, as well remember having been screened during my English class back then in 2007/08. Having watched Malcolm X documentary as recent as June/July 2020, and seeing this movie, I knew what was coming but thanfully they didn't show this in this movie, not sure I'd be able to take it(not that I would cry or anything, other than being depressed for few days) and in the end when it says after finishing his biography, 2 days later he got shit in one of his meetings. Out of all 4 characters, for me the character played by Malcolm X stood tall beyond anything. I could feel his anguish, frustration, fear and his need for "Black Power" even though it was mentioned in the movie by Cashas Clay. But yeah, in this day and age for me, Malcolm X is more relevant and insighfull than MLK will ever be. I respect both and they were great personalities but Malcolm X, he was something alright. I'm Indian, and for me Maytama Gandhi was great but not as great as Subhash Chandra Bose, whose famous slogan "Tum mujhe khoon do, Mai time Azaadi doonga" translating to, "You give me blood, I'll give you Freedom"

This movie is GREAT! Regina King is so incredibly talented, this movie is so well directed and the acting is great! The cast for each of the characters did a fantastic job - each role (Sam Cooke, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Jim Brown) was expertly cast! Leslie Odom Jr. sang beautifully in this movie and did a really nice job! This movie allowed the personal characteristics of each of these men to shine through in a way that each was relatable and they were all a part of the struggle in different ways. This is a great movie to own and reflect on.

Riveting, thought provoking, heavy foreboding! A true triumph for Regina King! I felt the desperation, sadness, disappointment in the Nation of Islam, particularly Elijah Mohammed and silent plea for help in Kingsley Ben-Adir’s portrayal of Malcom X. It wasn’t so much a stark difference to Denzel Washington’s masterpiece performance but a nuanced look at how he might have been feeling towards the end of his life. Bravo!

This was an excellent production from the beginning to end... the plot, the plan, the Director, the scripts, the Actors, all hit their designated marks. I became a Fan of Sam Cooke while rummaging through my Mom's record collection, at age 7-8. We all know by now why Sam Cooke was murdered. To this day, no one can match his voice and visionary veracity. I never saw Sam in this "Raw" fashion before, nor did I see X as a sly, selfishly conflicted Recruiter, using Iconic, cultural celebrity to ultimately start his own movement, rivaling the NOI. Ali was visibly in my Chicago child hood, daily jogging while air boxing and playing with us kids in the park. You will experience every emotion watching this epic movie, particularly if you were there, so to speak, you grew up in the times of the struggle of these cultural Giants

I came here after watching "One night in Miami" and the character played by Kingsley Ben Adir was amazing and portrayed all the emotion and frustration and even fear if Malcolm X. Having seen so many documentaries of Malcolm X, this movie made me almost cry (now I'm someone who rarely cries after a movie, last I cried was probably 1998/99) Malcolm X, for some reason appeals more to me than MLK, don't get me wrong I respect both but the more I see and know about Malcolm X, the more I feel his importance compared to MLK

I enjoyed the movie. It was a movie of 4 powerful, iconic, African Americans that can discuss the real world we live in from their perspective. They may have money, but that did not make them privileged as if they were white. One of Muhammad Ali's greatest supporters spoke very highly of him, and in the same breath declined his offer of help due to no n%@@&s being allowed in his home. Every man has to do their own part, and we all have our own struggles and views. This movie reminds us of that thanks to the role ajim Brown played while standing up to Malcom X for Sam Cooke. I never knew they all shared that bond, but I'm glad to hear and see it! It is a very inspiring movie to say the least.

Potent but nuanced direction (a great debut by Regina King). Smart and witty screenplay by Kemp Powers. Kingsley Ben-Adir as Malcolm X, Eli Gore as Cassius Clay, Aldis Hodge as Jim Brown, and Leslie Odom Jr.as Sam Cooke all deeply inhabit their characters, and they really connect as an ensemble.
Odom is especially brilliant. Sam Cooke's conflicted artistic soul and his ideological conflict with Malcolm X are the main narrative threads, and Odom takes you all the way into Cooke's mind and heart. His performance is saturated with genuine feeling with no lapses into sentimentality. (I would say the same for the movie as a whole.)
The final scene is Cooke's first performance of his great song A Change Is Gonna Come on the Tonight Show, and Odom's rendition of it is fierce and glorious; he makes you feel you're there in 1964, hearing it for the first time. Also, Regina King does full justice to the song and to Odom's greatness by letting us hear the whole thing--a choice many lesser directors would not make.
And be sure to sit through the full credits at the end to listen to a gorgeous song co-written and sung by Leslie Odom, called "Speak Now."

I marvel at a good script because good writing makes it so. That being the gospel, good writing is the foundation of a good film. Combine point-on writing with skillful acting and insightful directing and you got yourself a hellava night in Miami. Kemp Powers adapted his play, One Night in Miami, for the screen and for the most part hides any semblance of its stage origins.
Director, Regina King’s first feature film showcases the brilliant Kingsley Ben-Adir as a charismatic, heartbreaking Malcolm X, the splendid Eli Goree as The Cassius Clay, Leslie Odom, Jr. as a transitional, complex Sam Cooke, and Idris Hodge as a solid, contained, introspective Jim Brown. The acting is beyond good. These four gentlemen have an artifact that in twenty years will yet stand as a best performance in their repertoire.
The story takes place in 1964 after Cassius Clay’s historic win over Sonny Liston. But the true victory is grounded in the social and politically charged conversations the four iconic men pick up, bounce around, tear up and slam down. The seamless dialogue in this limited set production is the strength that propels it to greatness. The dialogue never gets burdensome or heavy-handed and at no time approaches the storehouse of boredom.
Regina King is to be loudly applauded, not only in choosing this Amazon distributed enterprise, but also for excelling in her feature film directorial debut. Kudos also go out to the production team of Keith and Jess Wu Calder along with Jody Klein. The cinematography of Tami Reiker makes tight spaces navigable and the score by Terence Blanchard sets a transient mood that allows the magic to unfold. We leave this film, yes, blown away by the engaging story and the flawless acting, but it is the determined dreams of the four icons we embrace. For just like them, we know that dreams ride the hope that propels life.

You don't know how sad I am to be saying this, but I'm giving Regina King's "One Night in Miami" 3 stars only because of Leslie Odom Jr's portrayal of Sam Cooke. He put this mediocre film on his back and carried it to the end. Odom's performance is a testament that true talent can take a weak script, trite dialogue and co-stars who've made their portrayals of historical figures laughable, and make lemonade. His portrayal of Sam Cooke is what made me stay until the end. At the conclusion of the film when he sang "A Change is Gonna Come", that made it worth drudging through this boring, choppy, amateurish film. I knew I was in trouble when I realized the trailer was probably going to be better than the entire film, and I was right.
I have no idea why One Night in Miami is getting so much praise because critics have savaged much better films for their technical flaws. I wanted to like One Night in Miami and was looking forward to watching it, but it started off a bit confusing and in every scene, I felt there was a lot missing that should have been there to tie it all together. If this was supposed to be an atmospheric character study of Muhammad Ali, Sam Cooke, Jim Brown and Malcolm X, and the dynamics of their friendship and how it culminates in the directions their decisions take them in life, it fails miserably.
Kingsley Bin-Adir spent the entire run of the film mumbling his dialogue and spewing some of the most non-Malcolm X nonsense I've ever heard. Malcolm X was a bold, unafraid outspoken warrior for his truth and Black people, I don't think he would be sitting in a hotel room looking downtrodden, tearing up and feeling sorry for himself. And the scene where his home was fire-bombed, and he, his wife and children were running out of their enflamed home, is straight out of Spike Lee's Malcolm X, only Lee shot it much better.
Eli Goree's turn as Ali looked as if he was performing it on Saturday Night Live. He brought no realism or depth to Ali. It was an achingly bad performance. Once again, a prior portrayal was done much better as in Will Smith's Ali.
Aldis Hodge's Jim Brown portrayal, consisted of an entire performance that was a series of dull monotone mumblings of banal dialogue and nondescript frozen "looks".
There were puzzling camera angles, shots and lighting where the POV's weren't really telling the story nor were they showing any raw emotion. I applaud Regina King for taking this film on, but it definitely shows that this is her first foray into directing a feature film . It's not an extraordinarily bad film, but it is not a tour de force in filmmaking either. It's really just a meh film with good intentions.

Malcolm absolutely was downtrodden at this time. He was suffering through what basically was betrayal from the very group he had exalted and represented. And he knew he was always being watched and was understandably paranoid. That last year of his life was extremely taxing. He knew his death could come at any moment.
I thoguht the guy who played Clay did an excellent job and he got the accent and mannerisms down better than Will did IMO. Remember this was a 22 year old Ali who was very inpressionalble and still a boyish quality to him, especially in the presence of someone like Malcolm.
Lesli Odum was Sam Cooke was a tour de force. He was incredible. He actually brought me to his side of the argument he had with Malcolm he was so convincing. And his ability to mimic Sam's voice was uncanny. I don't know another musician today who could have pulled that off. Between Hamilton and now this, he's truly one of the best overall entertainers in the world.
