I used to play both Zoo Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon 2 a lot when as a kid and these games definitely hold a special place in my heart. Thank you so much for this video! I absolutely loved it!! Looking forward to the Zoo Tycoon 2 retrospective.

Can't believe I been 20 years since this game came out. I remember distinctly being around 5 with my mom in the gaming section of Walmart and being the huge animal nerd I was/am it immediately caught my eye and now here I am 20 years later working in an actual zoo. Thank you blue fang

This was my jam back in the day. I grew up lower-middle class, so we were consistently behind the curve when it came to newer tech (ex: internet access, cell phones, etc.). Zoo Tycoon and Rollercoaster Tycoon were literally the only form of digital entertainment we had. Needless to say, I got... a little creative with my zoos... and, because I didn't know how to save the game, they would repeatedly play out very similarly.
And they'd get pretty insane. I'm talking playing dollhouse with the guests, making unreachable "secret zoos" at the back of the park, making animals and guests compete for rewards, turning the whole park into a giant ocean...
I come back to this game from time to time when I wanna relax for a while. As a kid I played both Zoo Tycoon 1 and 2, but for some reason I hold this one closer to my heart.

( Zoo tycoons 1 and 2 were two games I enjoyed watching as a youngling, I've always been interested in animals and the natural world, and these games were the best zoo games at the time. It makes me sad knowing I'll never be able to play these historic gems but I'm glad that it's only gotten better ever since seeing that we have games like Planet Zoo, Prehistoric kingdom, Jurrasic World Evolution 2, Zoo Tycoon 3 (maybe...). )

i love the isometric graphics and the clean grid lines of zoo tycoon and roller coaster tycoon so much. its so much easier to look at and line up everything perfectly
I believe there was one other expansion, can't remember the specific animals, but there was a mini-expansion that was only available in the Complete Collection as part of their reason to get existing players to buy it.
For the issue with large dinosaurs trashing their exhibits, the usual way of dealing with that was to use the rocks and shelters to surround your plants with them and it kept them from wrecking them and when the dinosaur had a correct exhibit, they wouldn't trash the actual terrain which led to some odd looks there.
I still wish they had managed to fix the habitat keeper bug that the water/land combined exhibits all had...if all animals went into the water or land, it would treat the other as an empty exhibit and de-assign your staff from it. So the combined exhibits were rarely used outside of the tutorial that required them.
I also remember that with the freeform zoos, I'd always start by pausing and using the cheat for several hundred million or a few billion in cash, then start building.
What killed a lot of my enjoyment with the game was when I found a pdf document that someone compiled of exactly how to make the "perfect" exhibits for every animal in the game, which made it less fun after a bit.
Zoo Tycoon was one of my first management/sim games (alongside The Sims and Sim City 4, and The Movies a few years later but the PC couldn't run that) and remains as one of my permanent favourites. I don't think I have my original vanilla game CD anymore, but I definitely have the boxed copy of Complete Collection, in perfect condition with all the pieces. Played it constantly, was always very careful not to damage it even as a child and tween. Must've read the manual dozens of times, and eventually discovered the cheats online shortly after CC released.
Nothing ever really hit the mark for me the same way except Jurassic Park Operation Genesis, and then nothing after that until Planet Zoo and Prehistoric Kingdom, and yet in some ways you could put all of those excellent games together and still not quite get the same feel and organised versatility as the original Zoo Tycoon. The charm and care put in by the developers just radiates off of it.
I remember going nuts when I first discovered the Marine Mania mechanics, and when the Aquatic Update came out for Planet Zoo I found I defaulted to building the same types of aquatic enclosures I built in Zoo Tycoon -- deep, semi sunken compared to path level, several types of viewing area, mixture of tank and terrain. I'm tempted to say my favourite overall was Dinosaur Digs, but I remember the whole game as a unified experience since most of my playtime was on Complete Collection.
I haven't started using mods for PZ yet, but oh boy am I tempted to (I like to browse the mods page and the unicorn is on the 'first ones to download' shortlist lol), and to even start dabbling in making some in the same spirit of the few secret animals in Zoo Tycoon. I had a Nessie exhibit in every park, etc.

zoo tycoon truly is the most beloved
Frontier could learn so much from BlueFang: big expansion packs that actually add new mechanics, more than 4 animals per expansion, official modding support (!!!!!), dinosaurs and marine animals etc. etc. Looking back on ZT1, it'd actually be funny to replicate some of the buildings from that game in PZ. Especially the aviary buildings look kinda cool.
Dinosaurs and marine animals will never be in PZ because Frontier already has a dinosaur park series, and even ignoring the ethical debate with keeping cetaceans, there's still way too many animals to cover in one marine pack.

WE NEED ZT1/2 ON STEAM!!! These games would be awesome on Steam! Modernized with Workshop capabilities, I could see the modding communities for both games making a HUGE comeback if these two get re-released, plus a huge surge in newer players to the Zoo game genre too!
also speaking of mods, people are still making them for ZT1 and 2!! moreso for 2 than 1, but it still exists! i found a custom zt1 hud the other day that i fell in love with.
It still amazes me that this game holds up so well. After watching this love letter of a video, I was compelled to boot up ZT on my laptop(using an ext drive) and WOW! Once I constructed my first food court, I became obsessed with trying to make my zoo bigger and more beautiful. There's something genuinely charming/relaxing about seeing all the movement in your zoo, listening to the ambient sounds, and adding a flowerbed or bench here n there to make it all the more presentable.
I get a kick out of revisiting ZT and ZT2 (I can't wait for that tribute video) just so I can see how my playstyle has evolved. As a 10-year-old, I enjoyed plopping T-rexes, African elephants, and orcas in one zoo while dropping random scenery objects and buildings with no sense of consistency and order. 14 years later, I enjoy making zoos with themes (Ice Age zoo, tropical resort zoo, small town zoo, etc.). I get more of a kick out of just seeing my zoo running in an orderly fashion, which is in stark contrast to 10-year-old me just letting animals run free and watching dinosaurs eat people....which ngl, I still enjoy doing from time to time hehe(really makes me wish animal attacks on guests were present in PlanZo lol) Great vid, dude. Love seeing the Zoo Tycoon/Planet Zoo fans share their love online even years after the series had initially wrapped with Blue Fang's closure in 2011.

Zoo Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon 2 has given me such a high standard for zoo games, even with the added Marine animals and Dinosaurs. So when I tried to do planet zoo, I lost interest in Planet Zoo instantly the moment I tried sandbox, it didn’t fill the standards ZT1 and ZT2 did
Planet Zoo can certainly take more cues from ZT.

man seeing this really takes me back when i was 9 yeaes old back in 2009 when i have my first zoo tycoon 1 game (never got the marine version thou😭) but it was some of my best memories and now in 2023 at 22 years old, i still have zoo tycoon 2 in my laptop
My main issue with the timed scenarios was mainly because I had too much time, or to be more specific, I had to sit and wait till the counter reached 0... it didn't recognize that all mission tasks were achieved, and only checked at the end of that scenario
planet zoo is arguably developed in the intentional direction to produce realistic zoos, and even then you can still get wacky with it. i don't find it a flaw - that's what prehistoric kingdom is here for now!
man, i dont even remember where i got zoot 1 from. its just always been there as a constant in my life, since at MINIMUM 2nd grade. both it and its sequel are wonderful games. I spent so many hours playing both and also reading about stuff in the menus.

Agreed that PZ needs to loosen up on their restrictions. I don't personally find PZ even fun even with expansions. Meanwhile I still play ZT1 and 2 to this day and still have a ton of fun and don't feel stressed about everything! Especially modding 😉
This is so nostalgic for me.
I remember my grandparents brought me the original Zoo Tycoon (it must have been in either 2002 or 2003, I must have been between 5 or 6 years) as I was and (still am) a zoo enthusiast from childhood and they always used to take me to zoos, Wildlife Parks and Safari Parks, even now we still go to Whipsnade, London, Hamerton and Woburn- 23 years on, (I had my first zoo visit which was at Whipsnade Zoo in 1999, I've got a photo of me on one of the tiger truck ride- I must have been not even 1 years old yet) and I loved playing it throughout the years.
I never owned Zoo Tycoon 2 when it got released however I finally got it in 2012 for my Birthday.
Years later in 2013, I brought Zoo Tycoon on Xbox 360 on release date and when I got an Xbox one I got Zoo Tycoon Ultimate Animal Collection for my Birthday in 2017, I brought Planet Zoo the day after release but sadly my laptop cannot run it smoothly.

Glad to see this game get the recognition it deserves. I do think from a mechanics standpoint Rollercoaster Tycoon was a better management game, but I dumped so many hours into this game as a kid, and still revisit it from time to time. The sequel was great too, but I've always liked the first one just a bit better

Great video! ZT1 was one of my favorites as well! Not sure if someone said this or if you knew this already, but for the bigger dinos like the T-Rex, you can build an exhibit with all the foliage on side and have a freshwater river run through to block them from entering and crushing.

I always enjoyed playing those games. They were my nostalgia. As i always enjoyed the idea of taking care of animals and managing my very own zoo. In my opinion Both Zoo Tycoon 1 and 2 are great games with most ot some flaws with them i prefer The First one more tho i am planning to have planet Zoo on a new Higher-End Gaming PC. Am glad you covered this video!
15:24 this is NOT a DLC. Or WAS, it was extremely rare to have an expansion back then being a DLC. It can't be be a DLC if it was physical. Kinda beats the definition.

The easter eggs in ZT were something else. Especially the holiday items!
In retrospect I find it also a respectable choice to code animals that were just *impossible* to please. Like the clouded leopard. And the Yeti. They were such assholes to care for! :D
15:32 I think the inclusion of ceolophysis and plateosaur go back to the "Walking with" series, which popularized both dinosaurs in its first episode. Same probably for the ice age animals, which were featured in the "walking with beasts" sequel, coming out just a year before the expansion.
I can't believe I did either lol, they even had the timed events for christmas and halloween. really awesome game. happy to see you found your way to this video, it's one of my favorites.

Maybe Planet Zoo will make an aquarium dlc, fantasy creature dlc, or even extinct animal dlc pack in the near future. (Example: Hellcreek Pack would include 8 cloned prehistoric animals from the Hellcreek formation. 1 pterosaur, 1 mammal, 5 dinosaurs)
There could be like 5 packs in development right now
All we should do it have patience and respect the dedicated team behind not only the main games
But also the many fantastic mods as well

I love the scenario with small city zoo spaces. I like the circus, and the animal rides and the animals PZ dont have now. However, ZT terrain editing is horrible, will easily drains your cash. I like this marine mania too, has way more cool animals like elephant seal.

I played the DS version as a kid, and I remember being around 8-10 in my apartment’s spare bedroom (which was the only room that had a computer) and trying to see if I could play the computer version online, but I could never get it. Hopefully I’ll be able to play it one day…

Great video ! I loved zoo tycoon so much as a kid, I still own a copy and go back to it from time to time ! I play mostly planet zoo now, and one thing I think is really missing in PZ is the ability to use many different terrain paints like we could in ZT (like savannah grass, rainforest grass, deciduous floor, coniferous floor...). It was so much nicer being able to use different terrain paints for our habitats instead of being stuck with 1 grass color in PZ... So frustrating ! Would you modders be able to make a mod that would add more terrain paints to the game ? I know there's already replacement terrain mods, but what about just more terrain "slots" like in ZT ? Or flexicolor terrain paint that would allow us to use different grass/dirt/sand color ? I don't know if that makes sense ahah, but that would be such a blast ! :)

My relationship with the game has always been kind of weird, sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it, but there's one thing that makes me love the game, and that is: having a realistic and "grounded" animal roster; okay, Planet Zoo has some animals that are not really common in zoos (Himalayan Brown Bear, Proboscis Monkey and such) but still, they're far from friggin dinosaurs. I feel conflicted about [NON-AVIAN] dinosaurs in PZ, and by that I mean that I absolutely HATE the idea: dinosaurs would completely ruin the immersion of realistic zoo, like what, you're just walking, you see stuff like Elephants, Rhinos, Tigers, and then you find yourself in front of a Tyrannosaur exhibit???
Frontier has made 2 dinosaur games, JWE and JWE2, and that somewhat gives me hope that we won't see dinosaurs in Planet Zoo: you want dinosaurs? Just buy JWE.
But at the same time, the fact that we already have 2 dinosaur games from Frontier makes me worried that some day we might in fact see dinosaurs making their way into PZ.
Another reason why I don't really like the idea of dinosaurs in PZ is simply how the DLCs are structured: even an 8-animals DLC wouldn't be enough to fully represent the variety of dinosaurs: okay, we'd definitely get the popular ones (Triceratops, Stegosaur, T-Rex, Velociraptor, Brachiosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Ankylosaurus, some random Exhibit animali) but that's it. No variety. We'd never get, let's say, something like a Deinocheirus or some more "niche" stuff, just the average dinosaurs you'd see in any children's book. 8 animals are not enough to represent millions of years of natural history
In conclusion, I hope that we'll NEVER see Non-avian dinosaurs being added to PZ, I want to keep my zoos realistic and not having stuff like stegosaurs or Velociraptors in my parks
For a similar reason, I wouldn't like to see fish either. I know a lot of people may disagree with this, but this is what I think about the hundreds of comments saying "giv us fish plz":
1) I personally see fish as more of exhibit animals rather than fully interactive habitat animals. They just stay there and swim around, they're not really like, let's say, Tigers or Antelopes, or any other land animal you'd see interacting with objects or other animals
2) a marine DLC would have to include a LOT more than 4 or 8 animals: the entire marine world includes a variety of biomes (coral reefs, deep sea, open ocean, seagrass meadows...) and a variety of environments and, let's say, "continents": Australia would need its own Marine Pack, the Arctic would need its own marine pack, North America would need its own marine pack, you get the idea. A single 8-animal pack wouldn't fully represent the variety of the marine world, and I personally don't think Frontier will ever make a PZ pack with more than 10 animals.
3) Fish are a huge group of animals, so which fish would be included? Sharks would be cool, but just one species isn't really enough: most aquariums have 2 or 3 species at least, like for example Grey, Nurse and Blacktip Sharks. Rays are another candidate, but again they're often kept in shared tanks with other species, if you go to an aquarium you'd probably never see a tank with just one ray. Coral Reef fish are, in my opinion, too small to even work in the game. Every single type of fish comes with its own issues.
4) the current building system wouldn't really work that well with fish in my opinion, most props are way too huge to be used to decorate fish tanks.
5) I don't really see fish as something I'd see in a zoo. I get it, some zoos have actual aquarium buildings inside them, and this takes us back to point 1: in this case, fish would work better as exhibit animals.
In conclusion, I don't hate the idea of fish as much as that of dinosaurs, but still I'd rather get more zoo animals than fish.
Just wanted to point out Prehistoric Kingdom isn't by Frontier, just looks very similar to their style.
