  • Savior of the Panzers (Sd.Kfz. 9 “FAMO” half-track)
Each and every Panzer Regiment had a Panzer Werkstatt or Tank maintenance company. This company was responsible for battlefield recovery of the damaged German tanks and they had 6 FAMO half-tracks for this job.
Sd.Kfz. 9 ("Famo") was a German half-track that saw widespread use in World War II, and the heaviest half-track vehicle of any type built in quantity in Germany. Its main roles were as a prime mover for very heavy towed guns such as the 24 cm Kanone and as a tank recovery vehicle. Approximately 2,500 were produced between 1938 and 1945.

I worked for a bloke (in a metal fabrication shop) who had been in tank recovery in the east. His right leg was smashed in an accident, which is probably why he survived the war. Very rarely he would recount some of his experiences, as we sat in the sun eating lunch. He told me that they had modified a motor cycle, to have hydraulic studs on the wheels. With this device, they could recover small armoured vehicles, tow them out of bogs, Etc. I very much enjoyed this man's company. I was fortunate to have met him.

As a retired Army 63S…I enjoy watching videos about WWII maintenance crews.

Three of the four new Tigers broke down upon first deployment at Leningrad. They were recovered under heavy artillery barrage by "Famo's". One could tow a 25 ton tank, three to tow a Tiger.

Das Fahrzeug wurde von den Fahrzeug- und Motoren-Werken (FAMO) in Breslau konstruiert und gebaut.

ARVs are pretty interesting given how many of them were basically field modifications of the damaged AFVs.

Is this the same vehicle that they refer to as being a prime mover?

'Prime Mover' is just a generic name for a military heavy towing vehicle. The Sd.kfz. 9 prime mover was the heavy artillery towing version. The repair/towing and crane versions are not prime movers as such.
