    A truly great introduction to the Heavy Reconnaissance Battalion and its function. When the division was on the defence, after Kursk, the Reconnaissance Battalion was paired up with the Antitank Battalion as a first response battle group to any breakthrough in the divisional line. On many occasions this tactical grouping proved very valid. In 1943, I would have to check the exact date, the Germans started to introduce the Panzer II Luch (Lynx) into the Reconnaissance Battalion. Armed only with a 2cm auto-cannon it was more of a heavy tankette than a light tank. By this point in the war production numbers remain low, like all German armour was low. So universal deployment was never realised with only a limited number of Reconnaissance Battalions receiving them in any number. An even rarer tank was a Panzer 38T with its turret swapped out with the turret from an SdKfz 222. The very few that were made mostly served on the Western Front. The Germans never realised the need for 37mm gun in their armoured cars and light tanks of the Reconnaissance Battalion as they held that it was mean to discover and force enemy to deploy for battle, it was not intended for it to engage the enemy in full battle.

      Good videos yes, but Books are still way better. The author of this video here is wrong with at least one aspect. Germans did use the Pz II and later Luchs in their Aufklarung's Abt. It is a light tank 20cm/L55 gun.

    Correction... The GERMANS DID in fact equip their Aufklarung.Abt with Light tanks. Called the Luch's Pz II. So some of the info stated in this video is incorrect. But still gave you a thumbs up.

    Thankyou for this Video It would be interesting to know if the Puma 8 wheeled Vehicle variants were any good in Russia owing to the poor Road Network and the weight of the vehicles themselves? ..You stressed the fact that the tracked 251 Variants were predominantly used over there

      250s and 234s were were used together in recon battalions. There were no special recon troops for the Eastern Front. Equipment however might differ from division to division due to shortages of vehicles.

    Was the Panzerkampfwagen II Ausf. L "Luchs" never used by armoured reconnaissance battalions?

  • @erwinsell184
    @erwinsell184 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    This video is incorrect german did indeed add light tank to several reconocinse and scout battalions using several light tank models and since late 30s request for production of them testing with several prototypes.
    Panzer II model
    Luchz was one of them .
    The Luchs were to enter service with armoured reconnaissance detachments (Panzer-Aufklarung-Abteilung)which were made up of four platoons of seven Luchs and one in the company HQ. There were also four Sd.Kfz. 250/1 light half-track armoured personnel carriers, one Sd.Kfz. 9 heavy half-track and seven Sd.Kfz.2 Kettenkrad half-track motorcycles. The Luchs' troops began to enter in the autumn of 1942. The first new tanks were received by the 2nd Company of the 4th Reconnaissance Battalion ( 2.Kompanie/Pz.Afkl.Abt.4) of the 4th Panzer Division.
    This person need to use better resources before spread incorrect information.

      By official order of battle the early Aufklärungsabteilungen had NO tanks, not even light ones. I suggest you check some deployment tables !
      Each Panzer battalion and regiment had a recon platoon, usually Pz II. In 1944 these recon platoons had Panthers and Panzer IV.
      Tanks were added for Kampfgruppen purposes only, but not organic.
      Luchs was quite rare and was only ever deployed to very few units.
      And Luchs was no tank, it was a tracked recon vehicle, that's a different thing.
