Early morning pint in Huidi Beag's famous pub in Bunbeg, Gweedor, deep in the heart of the Gaeltacht

We visit another Pub in this video, but not just any pub, this is Huidi Beag’s Bar and Lounge in Bunbeg, Gweedor, County Donegal. The pub is deep in the North of Ireland’s Gaeltacht and this area of Gweedor is the largest Irish speaking parish in Ireland.

It’s very early in the day and the pub has only just opened, so you’ll not see any of the traditional craig that this establishment is know for. We’ll have to imagine instead a busy evening here, where the craic’s 90 (as we Irish say) and where you have to fight your way to the bar.
The bar’s name comes from its owner Huidi beag Gallagher, a very famous Gaelic Footballer who passed away in 1974. The place was run by his wife Kitty until 1993 at which point their son Hugh took over. He still runs and plays piano and fiddle in the bar today.
The pub was established in 1961 and began life as a sibín (an illegal drinking house). The pub apparently has a fisherman’s licence, meaning that it could cater for fishermen, stranded by low tides who were forced to take advantage of the hostelry’s refreshments. Whether that’s still the case today I’m not sure, perhaps you’d let me know in the comments?
The pub is famous for traditional music and its Monday night session draws music fans and musicians from all over Ireland - the world even.

For me one of the best pubs in Donegal, music ,beer,hospitality,people, had a few great nights in hear , was taken here by a local couple that my wife and kids got talking to , on entry to pub it was music night standings room only , went to the bar but told my money was no good as the couple we were with payed for our drink and what a night I could not repay there kindness , I was so humbled and could only say thanks to them , ( hopefully I shall remember there kindness till the day I die )
