BALTIMORE OVERUN BY NORTH AFRICANS. Local people sold into slavery. A tale of cut-throat piracy.
An incredible story of Irish people, brutalised and taken into slavery in North Africa.
Today we visit Baltimore in West Cork. Not to be confused with another slightly bigger Baltimore on another continent! In fact, the anglicised form of Baltimore is directly taken from the Irish, Baile an Tí Mhóir (which means Town of the big house). The big house in this case is a castle commanding the centre of the village.
A lot of work goes into these videos as you can well see! You can now buy me a pint as a means of appreciation for my work on Naked Ireland, no obligation, obviously - only if you can afford it... I appreciate it. Cheers.

From Baltimore you can ferry out to Sherkin Island, Cape Clear Island, Roaring Water Bay, and the curiously titled Carbery’s Hundred Isles. Actually this group of islands takes its name from a poem by Thomas Davis called the The Sack of Baltimore from 1844. It opens…
"The summer sun is falling soft on Carbery's hundred isles"
There are in fact no more that 50 islands in the archipelago, most of which must be very small, but the poem became popular in the 19th Century and the name stuck.
The O’ Drisceoil family name is synonymous with the history of the place.
The ‘big house’, or more correctly the castle called Dún na Séad, which was the home of the O’Driscoll family and which means Fort of the Jewels, is open to the public, so you might want to pay it a visit? This small seemingly sleepy village has had its fair share of turmoil though. A large group of armed men who arrived here by boat on Christmas eve of 1413 were invited by the O’Driscoll’s for a feast in that castle. Presumably to try to placate them? The group of soldiers was headed up by the Mayor of Waterford with some bailiffs, and despite the hospitality shown, they captured the castle and imprisoned the O’Driscoll family, taking them back to Waterford. Now that’s not a very nice way to repay Irish hospitality.
More excitement came in the 1600’s when the village became a pirate base, apparently involving everyone in the area. In this period all the women of Baltimore were said to be wives and mistresses of the pirates. However this was English piracy and not at all as glamorous as what was to transpire.
In 1631 the village was completely sacked by Barbary pirates we think from Algeria (part of the ottoman empire) or from Morroco. The Algiers Inn in the centre of the village is a reflection of this period in the village’s history. `indeed there’s a Turkish restaurant in the village which has been awarded 2 Michelin Stars
But, regardless of where in north Africa these pirates came from, they abducted between 100 and 237 English settlers and local Irish people who were then sold into the Barbary slave trade. Almost none of them returned. What happened these poor people I hear you ask? Well they were put in irons and probably lived a life of slavery in Algiers, but some would have ended up galley slaves, rowing for decades, and never again setting foot on shore as long as they lived.
Baltimore is a fishing village. And it was a fisherman by the name of John Hackett who, having been captured by the pirates, led them to Baltimore, perhaps in exchange for his own release. Regardless, he met with a violent end since he came to be hanged on a cliff-top outside the village for conspiracy.
Refugees from Balitimore poured into Skibbereen, a town we visited in a recent Naked Ireland film, almost 13 and a half km away (check out my film of Skibbereen if you haven’t already seen it.) and it was generations before Baltimore, deserted and in ruins, ever recovered from this. When that recovery got underway in the mid 19th Century, the village was again to suffer badly in the Great Famine.
Baltimore is a popular tourist destination and it has also become popular with retirees and second home owners. Consequently its population swells in the summer months. In particular sailing and fishing are popular activities here as is scuba diving due to the large number of shipwrecks in the waters around here, including a WW2 German U boat.
You are 100km from Cork City here and Baltimore also lies at the end (or the start depending on your perspective or itinarery) of Ireland’s famous 2500 km Wild Atlantic way which snakes its way up the country’s west coast.
There are around 400 permanent residents in the village. The climate is thought to be milder than Ireland’s average due to the Atlantic gulf stream.
One thing which perhaps doesn’t need said, when you travel between our beautiful towns, cities and villages, enjoy that process of travel. As you can see, the journey is very much the holiday. Take in the beautiful scenery, stop at a pub and have lunch, and a pint if you’re not the poor person driving!

"Overrun with North Africans." You gotta love the lack of specification. Like, what North Africans? Egyptians? Berbers? Moroccans? Ethiopians? Although, if I'm perfectly honest it's surprising they even knew they were from Africa. Chances are the locals assumed the vikings were back and they had been on vacation.

I've attended mas there. It is impressive, but it doesn't compare well to some of the medieval cathedrals, most of which took decades to complete. It was built on the site of the old prison, and they may have recycled some of that material into the cathedral. Glimpses of the old prison can be seen in an old movie "The Rising of the Moon : An Irish Trilogy" narrated by Tyrone Power. One of the movies segments was filmed in different Galway locations, such as the old prison, the Spanish Arch, and the adjacent dock.

What a beautiful and haunting place. It is indeed a sorry state we're in when even the dead aren't even permitted peace.I am far too literal in my comprehension of Christianity and view it simply in the words of Jesus Christ Himself, "Love God with all your heart and might and love your neighbor as I have loved you. There are NO Commandments greater than these"..... I really thought they were pretty simple precepts. I am reminded daily that it is just not that simple for others...unfortunate, really very unfortunate. Thanks so much for another lovely video. I really did enjoy this cemetery visit.

Nice video, Greg! If you have the time or the inclination, I would recommend the novel Cré na Cille (the Graveyard Clay), by Máirtín Ó Cadháin, which is the finest book written in the Irish language and indeed in Irish literature as a whole (to the point where it has been translated in several European languages, including English). The part about the Catholic burial plots being separated from the Protestant ones via an underground wall is worthy of satire, and is redolent of several scenes in the Graveyard Clay.

    • @nakedireland

@ No worries, Greg. The book in question was thought to be “untranslatable” for a long time, with one would-be translator deciding to become a nun, while another refused as the Connemara dialect was too difficult. Another interesting peep into the island's rich history, though it does seem a shame that the one thing that unifies the residents of the cemetery - death - is used as a tool to keep them apart, along the lines of faith. Moreover, it seems utterly disrespectful to use echoes of that division as a blunt instrument to violate the peace and resting places of the deceased and affront their descendants. Senseless. Thanks, Greg.

I do like a good cemetery, you meet a better class of people in them 😁. Some expensive graves in there. How strange an unground wall, you’d never know it was there. I never understood or did vandalism, even as a kid. What is the point in vandalising a grave. The saddest grave I ever saw was that of my mate from school, I knew he was dead years ago but to stumble on his grave accidently one day really struck home. I must admit I don’t see the point in expensive gravestones, I don’t plan to have one at all. I think its sad to see once loved graves just left to decay, the way of things I know, but still sad to see people once loved and missed just left in unkept graves. Maybe its just me.

Thank you Greg. The care and sincerity and sensitivity you bring to these difficult parts of our identity is remarkable. So much History. We grew up walking past these walls, looking through the railings from the Falls Park or walking up the White Rock Road. Never ever going in. Both my Mum and Dad grew up on the White Rock, just across from the cemetery. Mum told me about sheltering along the cemetery wall during heavy bombing of the City during the Blitz, huddled together with her family, with a vegetable colander on her head as the search lights filled the night skies and the bombs rained down. Shrapnel fell down on them from the FLAC. Many families took shelter there amongst the head stones. Mum worked as a tea lady for the Jaffas , in their fur shop in the City, after my Dad died. They were very kind to her, and payed her well. The Wall was always a story whispered to you as we gawked through the railings. I do have a ghost story , handed down through the family, related to the cemetery. Thanks again Greg. Excellent music.

I don´t want money!! I want your friendship!! I live in Orlando Florida, by far, the tourist capital of the world, 4x the number of France. In 2028 Killarney will become my permanent home, split half the way with Spain. I LOVE The Spanish. So, let´s make a deal. You wanna work out paths and plans between Ireland, Florida and Spain? All I want is to have Irish and Spaniard friends. That´s all. I got the money I need.

My late mother had a friend in the 70's who lived in a posh area called Jordanstown (many similar houses to these). Anyhow she said their food cupboards were usually bare, not much in the fridge freezer and never had any coal for the numerous fires in winter. Just because someone lives in a house like this necessarily doesn't mean they can afford the basics...aah 'keeping up with the Jones,' and behind the beautiful facade is emptiness. Remember...all that glitters isn't always golden!.

Love the Naked Ireland videos, if you drive the streets of west Belfast the murals form part of a whitewash and brainwashing of the real horrors that happened here, makes good tourism but for our young folk it’s a dangerous agenda being peddled by former players in the hate that we lived through

That’s interesting. Why don’t you like Johnson?

    • @joanneskinner8637
      @joanneskinner8637 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@nakedirelandLyndon Baines Johnson, LBJ, came from Texas and was a very powerful politician. He was at one time the Majority leader in our Senate. When JFK was running for president in 1960, he needed the vote from the Southern States. So, he picked LBJ as his Vice Presidential Candidate. JFK won in the 1960 election and became President and Johnson as Vice President. Johnson never liked the Kennedys. Johnson was used to having a lot of power, and his attitude was "These Kennedy's weren't going to push him around..." JFK tried to include Johnson, but Johnson was not going to give into JFK or Bobby, RFK. November of 1963 comes around, and JFK was warned about Dallas Texas two days prior to his visit that the political scene was not good and not to go there. JFK did not listen! JFK and Jackie landed in Dallas on November 22, 1963. Johnson was also in Dallas on that day. The motorcade route was changed and Johnson was in a car way behind Kennedy's. They weren't in the same vehicle. So, when the motorcades took the Dely Plaza route, Kennedy was murdered. Only Kennedy was murdered and the Governor injured. Everyone, I'm sure has seen the clip. Anyway, then Johnson, Jackie, JFK's body, and advisors on both sides were on the plane back to Washington DC, Johnson took the Presidential Oath of Office with Jackie beside him. There was no reason for Johnson to do that! He should have waited, that would have been respect. Finally, when they landed, Johnson had all these microphones set up on the landing strip, while RFK entered the plane, and fetched both Jackie and his brother's casket, and disembarked that plane in a hurry. When Johnson left the plane, he was too busy doing speeches. Johnson should have shown more respect, but he relished in the power. He may have felt some sorrow for Kennedy, but his respect and involvement I question. Johnson never liked the Kennedys. He was very jealous of their youth, their vigor, and how they were moving the US forward. This really became apparent during the events of November 22, 1963. All power should have been set aside, we had just lost President Kennedy, and politics should have not been in the equation. It was a very somber occasion, for which I don't think my Country has ever fully recovered. It was said that Johnson had cleaned out Kennedy's furniture, etc. at the White House only a couple of days after he was laid to rest. There have also been conspiracy theories and high powered knowledge about Kennedy's Assassination. Johnson's name always seems to come up. Needless to say, I have never been to Dallas and have no intention of going anytime soon. (I would go to Ireland before I'd ever go to Dallas) Also, there are two dates on the calendar that I try to avoid going to work. Those dates are November 22, JFK's death and March 11, my Father's death. I know I talked at length about Johnson and the reasons why I do not particularly care for him. I'm not saying Kennedy was perfect, but he had terrific insight, a great sense of humor, and tried to more the US forward. I will forever love and respect JFK. ❤

Soda farl and potato bread, all that was missing was boxty to complete the holy trinity...🤣🤣 Mrs West Coast has great memories of Her mother cooking what She called Scone, rashers fried in a cast iron pan then the soda bread dough put on top and baked in the oven, eaten while still warm with lots of butter. BTW, when You were in Dingle You could have picked up some Annascaul black pudding.
