    I went to the shelter 2 weeks ago to adopt one kitten, but seeing how she was curled up with another kitten, I couldn’t leave him. The worker said they weren’t litter mates but they were inseparable. They needed each other, and truthfully, I needed them.

      Buddy and Lady are still the best of buddies. They play-fight and then love on each other with tons of kisses until they curl up and fall asleep in almost the same position I found them in at the shelter. If I didn’t watch Jackson’s video on "fighting", I would have stopped them instantly, but he was right...they stop when it gets too real. If I had just gotten one, I just know that my house would be torn up. They get bored and call out to each other. It’s so cute to watch. It’s only so much of playing with me and that’s where the other one comes in. I am seriously learning so much from these videos. Please keep them coming. @Rosario thank you so much for asking about them. @Jackson I love your energy, vibe, knowledge, and style. Thank you for making me a better cat mama.

      Was the second kitten close to her age (may I ask how much age difference)? same gender? Did they get along right away and was it easy to introduce them to each other? I made the mistake of getting a single Siamese-Abyssinian kitty, she's sweet most of the time and we do play a lot with her, give her lots of cuddles and lots of attention but I can tell sometimes she wants to wrestle or play rough-n-tumble but we can't really do that with her as we don't want to encourage her biting or scratching our hands/arms/legs/feet - instead we've given her some plushies which she can wrestle, bite, and bunny-kick to her hearts content but I can tell it's still not quite enough and that she seems bored sometimes. We've already reserved a second Siamese female kitty that's about 1 month younger than her (the closest to her age we could find available at the time), and will be able to bring the other one home in early March... I'm really anxious about if they would get along and become best friends or would they try to destroy each other immediately? I know we will need to be slow and cautious about the introductions, but read that if the kittens are young enough and close enough in age they will adapt more easily and quickly to each other?

      @@darkdolphiex9600 mine are 2 months apart, both are female. Both are Asian shorthair, and they were strays so I’m not sure what breed. My bigger hated my little at first, to the point I had to reintroduce them. They get along well now, one would literally scream if she doesn’t see the other around.
      Please don’t force introduce them, and not let them get violent. I made this mistake and for a month my life was hell. It took me 2 months to make things right again. Please buy a lot of interactive toys to distract both cats, and have plenty food bowls available around the house so they don’t see each other as threat.

    After our beloved dog died recently, we decided to change gears and go with a kitten. When my husband's back was turned ... I responded to a PAIR of kittens on Petfinder! Now these little girls live with us and even he is happy that we have two. We play with them, of course, but they also play with each other (like at 4:30 in the morning when we are still trying to sleep). They each have their distinct personalities ... one is a girly kitten and one is a tomboy. OK, two is more expensive than one (vet bills come to mind), plus all the normal supplies ... but we think it is worth having two happy kittens.

They do wrestle, chase , fetch -&-retrieved , play with wand toys and play soccer with bottle caps. They are all jumpers and climbers who loves their shelves , towers and climbing up their tree scratch stump posts. They ride on our shoulders laying down with tail wrapped around our necks. They do all come to us for belly rub curl up in our arms while purring themselves to sleep.

    A lot of reputable rescues in big cities have a policy where if you’re adopting a kitten, you MUST have another cat or adopt in pairs (some rescues give you a discount on the adoption fee for a pair!). They may even be able to hook you up with kittens who are already bonded to one another. And hopefully, they will also let you know if there are cats who prefer to be on their own with their humans-that’s how I got my two-year-old tuxedo boy!

    • @wildog47
      @wildog47 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yes not all cats like to be together. Even when brought home together. My sister's cats grew up together. All their first year was fine. Then the one decided he wanted to be the solo cat and started trying to kill her. So they had to rehome her. Like the used to groom each other and sleep together. Nothing changed in the house. They were both fixed as kittens too so it wasn't that. My one cat loves other cats. My other cat prefers to be alone. She's tolerant of other cats, but she's been happiest when she was solo. I foster cats so I have alot coming in an out and it really depends . Some cats are not social ad some are super social.

    • @toriless
      @toriless 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Every shelter I know offers a discount on the second kitten. Personally, I would make it an even more discount then they usually do. Ironically, it is usually single people or couples that adopt pairs more than families. Most young adults cats too. Families want kittens. Some people want cats that are several years old since they tend to be calmer.

      @@blumoon187 this is why I hate blanket statements. It really should be on the personality of the animal. Not a general all cats need to have a friend etc. They are all different in personality and temperament. Nd trying to force cats that don't want to have to share their territory to share it is kinda mean IMO. Just because someone said they would be happier doesn't make it true. I've fostered tons of cats. Pretty much all kittens love other cats and kittens. However alot of older cats are territorial and prefer not to share.

    Too cute. My parents insisted their solo female kitty who had developed aggression problems would never want another cat around. I was fostering a younger male kitty whom I knew liked being around other cats and talked them into letting him “visit” for a weekend. (Not the ideal for introductions, no, but it was an unusual situation.) TL;DR, he never left, they love each other, and they play together all the time. And the original girl kitty is much less bitey now.

    We got 2 kittens and everything was wonderful until the boy died at 18 months old. We still miss him. Two years later the other female cat still hadn't recovered. We got another male kitten but it hasn't worked out. We followed every rule in the book. Read everything, watched every video. Sought advice from numerous cat behaviorists. Anyway, 2.5 years on things are better but they still fight from time to time and squabble. We have to constantly watch them. Whilst I love them both so much, it isn't always ideal. :( xx

They got to meet the kittens and I tried so hard to convince them to take both but the other one was shy of new people and kept hiding behind the furniture 😞. We got a new foster kitten to buddy up with her not long after but her mood had really changed. She got playful again with the new kitten but it was like her whole personality changed.

    I adopted a traumatized half-Siamese kitten and they said she could NOT go to a home with any other cats, children, or dogs. She freaked out at the tinest sounds and would cower in corners and hiss. I'm successfully socializing her and she's a sweetheart. No more hissing at all and she's so food motivated, that I use it as a bridge to healing. She now sits on my lap (if it's her idea), purrs like a freight train, has learned how to meow, & tells me she loves me (blinking). She has a kitty condo where she sleeps at night, and a very tall, 7-floor cat-castle in front of a big window whe she loves to hang out during the day. We play "bird" and she loves it. I don't know whether she will ever adjust to a sibling because she was also "picked on" by siblings as the runt of a litter. She came to me with an awful upper respiratory infection and needed immediate care, and I think the shelter didn't understand she was also sick.

    You taught me so much about healthy parenting! The rules and techniques you use for teaching compassion for a non-verbal mammal (baby/toddler or cat!) work wonderfully for preverbal kids. Look carefully for physical clues/cues to understand their needs, do not impose your biases or issues when interpreting their behaviors (people think babies and toddlers are capable of "revenge" but they are not!), and giving a "yes" for every "no", using the environment to support them (like the cat superhighway or babyproofing and making safe spaces for your toddlers), and more. My husband is a better dad because we followed your advice with our cats before our son was born. You are actually a Montessori or positive parenting cat parent! The exact principles apply. Thanks for helping my son have a more emotionally safe and happy upbringing!

    We adopted a kitten over three years ago. For the first year he was very entertained by us and all the toys he had, but then one day /nothing/ did it for him. He grew bored of everything and kind of stopped acting like a cat. I took a bunch of his toys he no longer used (he has LOADS, worry not) over to the shelter so that those kitties could make use of them while they waited for adoption, and I wound up adopting an adult kitty there. It was like a whole world opening up for our original kitty, and with the family addition he learned how to be a cat again. Always try to have them in pairs if you can, it really does make all the difference for their quality of life.

    In cases where kittens were rescued as litters or are raised with other kittens, adopting them out solo is not a good idea because they are social and need a buddy. But singleton orphans, or young adults who prefer their independent life, are obviously on a case by case basis. Many adult cats are happy to have a castle all to their own, and single kittens raised alone are often fine so long as you spend a lot of time with them

      You sound like a very active and dedicated pet parent-- but many people want/get cute kitten and then the excitement wears down, or they are at work all day. You gave your cats great lives--- but generally kittens are happier with a playmate, especially from their own litter.

    onetime someone genuinely, with their whole chest, tried to tell me having more than exactly one cat, dogs and other free roaming animals included, was animal abuse bc 'cats are solitary animals'. please tell me why half the people i know have a WHOLE COLONY of feral cats? when theres plenty of room for them to separate from each other, they still choose to go back to the same place to sleep, eat, hunt and play. yeah, they go off alone to mate or whatever they do, but they spend most of their time in pairs or groups. my cat has a best friend (hes *extremely* attached to me, but he lives with my mom, who does TNR/rescue and keeps a house full of cats) and they are literally inseparable. theres tons of places to hide from each other, plenty of toys, and several bowls, but for some reason they all sleep, eat, and play together... its almost like they enjoy each others' company!

    My baby is an only child and she does not play well with others (judging from interactions with neighbourhood cats / strays when they come into our yard). She, my hubby and I have our routine and she seems just fine with it. She has a special vocalisation when she wants to play (usually hide and seek)and we always oblige her for as long as she wants. She is the queen of the household. She is 5 and I think she would get stressed out if we get another cat.

      Just spend as much time as you possibly can with your kitten. I've almost always had one, for different reasons, and they were fine. I did adopt 2 kittens a year ago and they were too much for me....they wore me out🤣😅. I had to rehome them and adopt a single cat. Two of my cats that I adopted, were specifically requiring an only cat home🤷‍♀️

    Loved it JB! ❤️ I have quite a short attention span but I was glued to my screen and riveted by the whole scenario!
    Gave me Who Framed Roger Rabbit vibes🕵🏻‍♂️💃🏻
    It also confirms that I made the right choice in adopting two kittens instead of 1 (even if they have a lot of energy - they are half bengal half Cornish Rex).
    Thank you for your QUALITY work ❤️

    That reminds me of when we bring our treasure home. He was in propper age. But the first few days he was walking and meowing to all tight places where their buddies should be hiding. Thankfully it was just a short time and now is happy with us and a garden cat behind the window :)

      We got our kitten while we had a senior cat. The senior cat rejected her. Then he passed when she was 5 mos. She's now 9 months. She's VERY stubborn and strong willed so I'm uncertain how she would feel about a new cat suddenly showing up. I'm home all day so she's not alone. If she was alone, I would risk it. It was such a catastrophe having a resident cat rejecting the new kitten that I haven't wanted to go through that again.
