  • @Gomace

All my life I've played Chess with my dad. He has beaten me every time we played, and as I grew better, so did he. Considering he was better than me from the get-go, I never got a chance to get better than he was, resulting in all losses. His favourite opening was the "Czech Rider", which he named himself after how his Czech dad taught him how to defend both your knights with only your queen. The move always surprised me, as he wouldn't always start with it, but would ultimately end every day's last game with it, telling me that "No man can beat a Czech Rider from a Czech born".
After failing at Chess for almost 20 years, I decided to head internationally. I wanted to find a strategy, an opening, that could rival or beat my father's, and his father's before him. Where did I look? India: The fabled birthplace of Chess. I played against every monk, every scholar and every grandmaster I could get an audience with, but none had an answer to the "Czech Rider".
Filled with dissapointment and losing my will to search, I planned on heading back home and give up on my quest. Waiting at the airport, I stared at a table. I arranged my traveling Chessboard and the pieces so that I could visualise the "Czech Rider", and study it further. The more I looked at it, the more I was filled with anger and frustration.
"There must be a way" I mumbled.
Then, like out of a day-dream, a woman, clad in a crown, and black garments gave me a smile and pointed at the Chessboard. I couldn't believe my eyes, I thought my pondering in the Chess world had given me hallucinations. Had my father's opening cursed my life?
    "Do you play?" She asked.
But her accent, it wasn't indian, as if to wake me up from my Chess dream. It was familiar. I had heard that accent before. I spoke, but my words flinched any further thoughts.
    "Yes, want a match?".
My ears realised why I recognised her accent.
We played for hours, until my plane was ready for boarding. I bid her farewell, and went off.
It was soothing. Relaxing. Playing with her gave me a new spark to play Chess. Something different ignited within my fantasy. Was this love? No, it was inspiration. I fell asleep on the plane, and my dreams only furthered my planning.
I woke up as the plane landed. The impact would've awoken even the dead if they were on board. I grabbed my belongings and walked out on the bridge. A suitcase and a handbag, all neatly encapsuling all of my traveling equipment, and my Chessboard. My Chessboard. My Chessboard! I had forgotten my Chessboard at the airport! I looked back towards the plane, but immediately realised that it was not something to travel back and get.
"I'm gonna have to get a new one." I sighed.
"Will this one do?" a voice spoke from behind me.
There was no mistaking it: That was the same accent I'd heard at the previous airport. As I turned around I saw that it was indeed her face, but the Chessboard wasn't mine.
"This isn't mine" I answered confused.
With a grin on her face, and another thought in mind she said "We can play for it."
Without much more to say, we ended up staying for a bit longer at the airport.
I arrived home the next day, but not empty handed.
"Dad, I want a match!" I yelled out.
My mother, already rushing to the door, smiled and giggled before she forced a hug on me.
"I've got some dinner ready, I'll warm it for you." She said with a longing.
Stoutly, my father's footsteps sounded through the wood of the staircase.
"There's not a trick in the world that will make you win." He grumbled.
"I know some things that you wouldn't have seen before" I confessed confidently.
We sat down in the living room. Legs spread, two feet apart. Not a wrinkle on the pants, and elbows on the knees. This was my moment.
He moved his first knight, but I was not fazed.
The second, but I was stern.
Then he opened for the queen.
I moved my bishop to block her, but then:
    "Knight takes Bishop." He declared.
No. What? I had the move. I'm certain, I put a.. my pawn. I forgot to move my pawn! I wasn't going to move until the next turn, I was thinking too far ahead!
    "I- I demand a rematch!" I said, almost shouting.
"You're not gonna win, and you know it." he said.
I couldn't believe my eyes. I had traveled to India, learned so many strategies, and my planning was unparralleled. How could I lose?
Seeing my face, my father pulled me up from my chair and gave me a hug. He then looked at me and said
"You still got a Czech mate"
