    I'm sorry Rusty but you are showing why analytics is ruining the NBA (mad respects to you though, long time subscriber). People don't take into account contextual biases with whatever the numbers are showing you. If you didn't grow up watching basketball in the late 90's -00's then you would know why Iverson is so respected. Defenses were much more suffocating and allowed to get away with hand checking, hard fouls, and dominated by big men. He played so many minutes because his team was so offensively inept. You say his per-36 suggests inflated stats, while I suggest he could have been more efficient if he played less minutes -every game was basically playoff intensity for Iverson. The paint was highly compacted and you can't judge his team based on spacing and 3-pt because that wasn't basketball in the early 2000's. The difference between the top shooting 3-pt team and the worst shooting 3-pt team wasn't that huge back then and coaches benched players for taking 3's over a shot in the paint. Iverson was one of the most dominant guards the NBA has ever seen and they resorted to aggressively containing him. If he had another superstar quality player to back him up, his percentages would have been higher, and you saw that when he played with Carmelo Anthony.
    The idea that you can just use analytics to look at the numbers of players from back in the day and compare them today retroactively ignores the fact that statistics is flawed and open to interpretation. I'm an accountant that deals with numbers all the time and have to analyze the context behind statistics. The fact that an undersized guard had this great mid-range repertoire that can finish at the rim against skyscrapers makes him pound for pound one of the best players in NBA history. Plus he was a decent defender with quick hands for his position at the time who gave a lot of effort on that side of the ball. The analytics will always favor recent players because the game is played this way.

    • @rustybuckets
      @rustybuckets  4 ปีที่แล้ว +97

      I mentioned the context of his spacing, I do understand why AI is respected, and I didnt mention a single advanced stat in this video lmao. Minutes played isn't an advanced stat.

      @serenadesilhout 4 ปีที่แล้ว +60

      @@rustybuckets You mentioned the context of spacing, but still seemed to penalize AI for the fact that spacing was different back in those days. Any argument about why his teams were bad at 3's has nothing to do with his abilities as a player. If anything that just reflects the time period, his teammates, and the coaching style. It doesn't create a compelling reason for suggesting why A.I. is overrated as a player.

    • @serenadesilhout
      @serenadesilhout 4 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @@samhartje723 Numbers is just an observation, how you interpret it can still be flawed. There's many things that don't show up in a boxscore that contributes to a team's success and qualities that can't be measured such as competitiveness or leadership.

    The thing with Allen Iverson is that he was more of a media phenomenon than he was a great player. He was beloved for a couple reasons. First, women embraced him, particularly in the black community, because of his swag and style. Iverson ushered in a hip-hop vibe as well. Also, he was a giant killer. He produced more with less. Everyone always roots for David and against Goliath.

      @@Vibe1610 they were still the best defensive team in the nba, iverson carried the load offensively but its not why Philly made the finals. It was the weak east, 76ers defensve, and occasionally iversons offense. for example, philly won game 6 wit Iverson going 5-27 in game 6 vs bucks. To close Toronto in game 7, Iverson went 8-27 and was outscored by Aaron Mckie but 76ers still won. In game 3 vs Milwaukee, Iverson didnt even play and 76ers only lost by 6. Iverson was a 10/10 scorer but needed to ball hog and shoot alot to do it. For example on the Nuggets, there were 7 12+ ppg scorers but Iversons style couldnt play along side denver. Infact, Denver got better after trading Iverson to detroit for Billups, when Detroit got worse. Iverson is in my goat list for influence but ppl dont know many details and hold him above so many players who were team players so they didnt have nearly the stats. Even though Iverson is my favorite player of all time just for the fact that he did what he did being so short, you’re points are correct. People in the comments are gonna argue with them, they’re 100% correct. The thing that makes him so good in my eyes is his impact like you stated, similar to Currys impact rn with everyone and their moms attempting 3s, Iverson made it cool to be short and play basketball

  • @pittland44

    As a short guy I loved AI's game. It was nice to see a little guy get out there and show the giants what's what. However, as a basketball fan I always found AI's game to be rather selfish an myopic. To be blunt if AI had been better about moving without the ball and had gotten his teammates involved more he would have won more and they would have probably gotten at least one title. I remember many games where AI was screwing around with the ball while all of his teammates stood stock still because he wouldn't get them involved. Part of the problem was he was insanely gifted and talented and could get away with a lot of it by riding his raw abilities. Had he been more diligent with practice and workouts (and not about going out and clubbing), and been a better example to his teammates (especially the young guys), and more committed to working as a part of the system things would have gone a lot better for him.

  • @tuesdaysaint5210

    Not bad . Although did you consider how the extra minutes caused him to endure more injuries as well as negatively effect his efficiency. Playing 42 min also forces you to share he floor with the bench more than the other stars he is compared to. Finally , just wondering why you are so easily considering that having EXTRA HELP may have reduced the larger numbers but not considering they would have increased his efficiency significantly?

    As a Sixers fan who watched every game in 2000-01, they were not the same team after the Dikembe trade (I remember it was debated on talk radio everyday when the trade went down).
    The Sixers were 41-14 at the time of the trade with the best record. Trading Ratliff for Dikembe is not the problem, throwing in Kukoc is where the trade went wrong. Kukoc was the only legit scoring threat after Iverson as he would come off the bench and keep a team from making a run while Iverson was resting.
    The team went 14-12 in regular season after the trade, and went 12-11 in the playoffs so they were essentially a .500 team post Kukoc.

    AI played during the era of hand checking and when bigs were actually BIGS protecting the paint.
    Shitty and predictable argument for why Iverson is overrated when his era clearly indicates that he was one of the best among it.
    If AI is “overrated” because he played 40 plus mpg, then I guess everyone’s numbers from that era was inflated because in the 00-01 season alone, you had 13 guys playing 40 plus minutes and 22 players playing 39 mpg or more including other all time greats such as Shaq, T-Mac, J-Kidd, C-Webb, Vinsanity, Kobe, etc.

    I loved watching AI. He was one of the most entertaining players in league history.
    That said, he was also an inefficient volume shooter. Both can be true.

    • @factandsuspicionpodcast2727
      @factandsuspicionpodcast2727 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Fries I've never seen this guy's videos, but he's not wrong. They were all high usage, low efficiency shooters who disappeared on the defensive end.
      Of the three, both the eye test and metrics suggest T-mac was the best at his peak. Though, I'd prefer to watch AI 100 times out of 100. The man was must see television every time he stepped on the court and definitely had the most lasting impact on the game.
      Carmelo may actually be the most overrated player in league history. Some of it isn't his fault; he was drafted at the same time as Lebron so the comparisons were natural. It's hard to measure up against the second best (I'm a Jordan guy) player in basketball history.
      The rest is all on him.

      So was Kobe Bryant, Tmac, and other top scorers during this era. Allen also had no help until he was traded to Denver. That said, his cultural significance is a big part of why he's regarded as highly as he was, so if someone wants to call him overrated, I respect the criticisms because they are real.

    You have to start using more Per 100 possession stats and Advanced Stats.
    PTS/REB/AST FG/3P/FT is such a naive way to look at the game that requires more context, for example, how that player elevates his team. ORtg/DRtg, BPM, TS%, Win Shares and VORP. While they don’t yell the whole story they give a clearer picture than the archaic slashline

    Iverson absolutely carried those defensive teams, even if your defense is elite you still have to score and Iverson did ALL of it, how you go say the Sixers were good with 1 superstar and an elite defense but the bucks were bad with 3 20ppg scorers and 2 all-star and a decent defense
    You say Iverson stats are inflated but Kobe, Harden, and Jordan are all higher than him on the all time usage rate % list
    Iverson's numbers are consistent for 12 of 14 years not matter what the construction of the team was, at that size, in that era
    If you watched Iverson play then you know without a doubt that he is a top 5 SG all time
    Take out Harden and add TMac at number 3, Iverson number 4, Wade at 5
