I bought this bass at the very start of the year. And mine came with the other design of bolt on. As in it has the 7 screw setup. Never had a problem. I actually really like the design and it helps getting to the higher frets.

      @LowEndLobster  3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

Thanks Keith! Indeed, I thought the "solo bassist" target was pretty spot on tonally, though I don't think you'd want to deal with those ergonomics in a solo bass situation - I wouldn't!

I'd be alright with it cause I just put weights in neck-divers. My main issue is the 5 string doesn't come in this colour! Also the neck heel seems thick for that area.
Surprised that the neck is nice cause I have a Gear4Music Harlem V bass and the neck is abysmal - poorly-fitted frets, dry as hell fretboard, inconsistent thickness, rough finish, etc.
I got it as a mod platform and intended to replace the neck from the start so it doesn't matter but it's a shame the neck once removed is best used as a club.

I have the 5 string Coliseum with the type of neck joint as shown in the website pictures. No stability issues there at all and makes upper fret access very comfortable.
There are, of course, indicators of the budget nature of the instrument - the hardware isn’t high quality, though serves its purpose. There are also some blemishes to the finish around the input and neck pocket.
All in all a remarkable buy for the price. I got it to try out living with a multi scale without breaking the bank. It’s a keeper for me, but has also convinced me to custom build myself a “shortened multi scale” to provide even more ergonomic comfort to me as I endeavour to continue playing bass as long as possible without surrendering to arthritis and tendonitis!

The pickup configuration here is probably imitating Dingwall NG series, with no real neck pickup but rather a bridge and the middle one. So it is probably designed for more higher register string noise... which works really nice in metal genre, with some heavy, distorted bass tone. Great review as always! I also was really curious if I want this Redsub... But fortunately, my Dingwall sounds awesome ^^

Great review. Bought one 2 weeks ago, 7 screws on back, so access to higher frets is perfect, also string spacing is very comfortable for my taste, and I play slap a loooot, so it's a preference thing. Tuners, nut, knobs and strings are shitty, replace them as soon as You can. In future I plan to invest in better electronics, maybe Darkglass preamp- it's super comfortable for me and sounds great so I think it's worth it. Manufacturing techniques these days allow for beautiful "looking" instruments, but it's the sound that's critically important. It does seem a pity they didn't spend a bit moor money and time in making it better. In looking for a 5 string fan fret. I ended up getting a 6 string. A Ibanez SRFF806 that was for sale on Marktplaats for a bit. There wore some stupid low bids put on it but it was gust not selling. I decided I would give it a tray and gave him a fair price for it. I was afraid the neck would be to wide for me to play, but it has a perfect perfect shape for me. Its a great bass, don't regret getting it!

Nice review! I have the 7 bolt variety of this bass and it’s perfectly sturdy and seems very surprisingly robust. I play bass in a metal band and my bandmates love the sound from this thing, as do I. Gotta be said I did have to do some work to it before playing, for example the obligatory truss rod and intonation adjustment, but also the frets on the bottom of the neck were sharp, sharp enough to quite literally shred my hand when I was first trying it. Personally I quite like the EQ, the pickup knob is fairly useless but the equaliser works a treat and I can find almost exactly the tone I want just by fiddling with the EQ. Tuners are a thing I’ve seen a lot of in this comment section and I have to agree, they’re not the best. I’ve had no issues personally, but the placement is a bit cramped for my liking and the C tuner feels a bit scratchy. As for string placing, I’m a guitar player mainly so the closeness of the strings aren’t a problem for me and actually makes it more playable for me, but I do understand that it makes it very cramped on the lower frets especially when stringskipping frequently.
I personally feel I have got my money’s worth as I really do like this bass, but I do understand the complaints as I myself had to do quite a lot to make it playable for me. Again, awesome review 👍

Just picked up a B stock from manufacturer which needs a new nut, for £110 ($155). I've had one before and sold it for QC issues but I could not miss it so cheap. Will replace nut and consider upgrading EQ. Also it has the correct neck cutaway not the absolute chonk you got (never seen any others like that).

    Hi Lobster
Bit late to the party but I just got the G4M 972 5 string a few weeks ago and I’ve got to say I’m really quite happy with it for the price I paid. I understand if you are outside the UK that shipping has to factor in but I got it next day delivery for a measly £1 (99p actually)! So £280.98 all in.
I believe that G4M has started making these new lines in a different factory (Music Zoo?) and they are said to be improved from the Red Sub Colliseums. I don’t know how much improved as it’s almost identical to yours except mine has the 7 bolts. And a black headstock with the red G4M logo.
Hardware is still pants (the saddle adjustment screws sockets were rounded out so you couldn’t turn them with your allen key) but for another couple of quid I bought M2.5 x 8mm grub screws and just replaced them. Yeah tuners aren’t the best but TBF have still held their tune over a couple of weeks. The body isn’t bad and balances ok when you’re sitting and there’s no neck dive standing. If I were to be completely honest if there was a different shaped body I’d have had that one. I’m not a soloist so I’m quite happy not playing at the top of the neck but I understand if that and the 16.5mm string spacing would put off many people.
To me the massive redeeming feature is the neck. It’s beautiful. Straight as a die out the box and minimal setup once I sorted the saddle screws. Truss rod appears OK. The frets are really well finished no sprout and are like that all the way up the neck and the roasted maple is a lovely touch. The strings are surprisingly good (don’t know the make) I was going to swap them as soon as I got it but that’s gone on the back burner for now. The low B as with any MS is really defined and other strings too are well nice.
Not a fan of the pickup position. I like my neck pickup to be, well, in the neck region. So, I’m going to mod it and add a 3rd pickup in the next few months. I’ll then replace the blend knob with a 6 position switch and probably upgrade the pre. Might sand off the burl veneer (it is actually veneer) and refinish with headstock to a different colour.
TBH it’s a bit of a mishmash, a Curate’s Egg if you like. It has some great features but a lot of downsides. That aside for an introduction to a MS bass, for the price there is nothing out there that will beat it. Harley Benton don’t appear to be resurrecting their fanned fret yet and the (cheapish) Cort A5 Beyond is 3+ times the price in the UK and Ibbys and Dingwalls well into the thousands.
When I’ve upgraded it I’ll PM you on TB and we can have a laugh at my failure, like your RB-414 or maybe if it’s a success we can have a virtual beer. Then I’ll get bored of it and move onto something else. 🤣

    Nice video, Lobster!
I got this bass a few months ago, but with the 7 bolt neck. I think the neck feels very secure with it and the upper fret access is much better on that one. The balance is a big problem though due to the upper strap button placement/ body design. The pickups/electronics are definitely not great. I run it passive (I don't like the EQ), but it still sounds like there's a blanket over the sound. I am already looking at other basses.

It seems fairly evident that Gear4Music themselves - a UK company - are at the mercy of whatever their Chinese OEM manufacturers decide to do. I bet that they only found out about the neck joint change when they opened the box - if they even did that before shipping the boxes out to customers.
I bought a Harlem headless guitar from Gear4Music last year, having seen two different versions of it in the photos on their website. (Some have string clamps on the headstock, some don’t: mine came with them.) I got it partly because I wanted to learn how to fix wonky frets, and it was definitely educational on that score. I need to work on shielding next.

If the company cuts corners in one area, they could have cut it in others - like the truss rod. Too many question marks for me. Cheers!

Don't like the single cut, but strangely enough it looks like it actually fits the design. I figured that the spacing would be tight, I think I would rather hold a plank to have standard spacing as a four string across a six string.. Also wondering if it isn't just an illusion that the pickups aren't exactly parallel, the neck pickup looks to be angled sharper than the bridge pickup. I always wonder exactly how they figured out that the pickup need to exactly where it is and with such an angle. I know that Leo used his mules to figure that out, somehow I don't believe that others are so meticulous, but maybe that's just my cynical assumption.

RedSub Colosseum = Shit Sandwich! Glad to see you stick to your guns and not sell out on this one. I was looking at the 5-string and came to the same conclusion. If it was a fundamentally solid platform, with adequate placeholder hardware & electronics like some low-end Harley Bentons, it might have been worth it to buy one & upgrade the tuners, bridge, nut, pickups & preamp. Maybe. Or make a better decision and buy a high-end Harley Benton (in the same price range or maybe a bit less) and you likely wouldn't have to do anything except yank out the bland, tone-sucking active preamp from the HB and run the pickups passive. I've done that with the HBZ 2004/5 , a 5-string Marquess and the Enhanced P-Bass & Jazz Bass models. The passive pickups are quite good, they just open up and sound 10x better once you throw the cheap, shite EQ circuit in the trashcan! While you're at it, wire up some series/split-coil/parallel 3-way mini-switches for each pickup if they're humbuckers or a series/parallel between the pickups if they're single coils... that's what I typically do to get maximum tonal flexibility... maybe even an in/out of phase switch if you dig the funky, nasal tone... Anyways, back to the RedSub... those just struck me as fake-ass facade basses. Thanks for the neck-joint reveal too! That definitely sealed the deal for me. Just no!! That said, I have a SubZero Rogue VI 30"-scale Baritone (in Polar White with a Maple fretboard), it's like BC Rich Stealth or Ibanez Xiphos & a Bass VI had a love-child. Reverse HS & all!! Changed the tuners immediately to locking ones, will swap out the humbuckers for good pickups & do some creative wiring but yeah, I love this one, so not all their offerings are crap! If you're lookin for a cool Bass VI alternative and don't have hands on a HB JA-Baritone (who does?) the Rogue VI is a worthy mod platform!! Keep it on the Down Low!! Later Lobster, -T

Seems like Gear4Music are still trying to figure out what to do and what to make with their Redsub brand. I ordered their cheapest passive 4 string multiscale bass 2 years ago. It's since been discontinued but it was the cheapest multiscale bass in the world. Came with electronic issues, very sharp fret egdes, but after some work and a pickup swap i got it working. For ~200 eur it was an obvious first try from them. These new basses look like a step in the right direction (and a bit more expensive), but they're still almost 3 times cheaper than Cort multiscale basses and far away from Cort's quality. My guess is that it will take a couple more instrument generations for Redsub to be able to compete with something like Harley Benton.

6:00 it doesn't sound as bad as I remember...I think the playability weirdness/issues others have pointed out on the Redsub platforms as well turn me off because if it doesn't feel great in your hands when you're holding it then you're going to be fighting with it and when you get another it will just sit there in the rack...lol I just described the cycle. So if you need a 6, get a 6 - but there are Wolf, Bryce, many many very low cost instruments in the 5 and 6 and multiscale markets, as well as being established even if established as a bottom tier brand - for me to get an 8 string classical there are like 3 off the shelf options and two of them are REALLY expensive and the other one is Rondo Music.

If you're looking at the used market, you can score a 6 string for $150.
I got my Washburn MB6 for $325, all in, and if you put in elbow grease you can get nice stuff for cheap - my hohner V is trashed but it's all maple through neck goodness as a platform and the original hohner preamps are how I think Johnny Long blew his cone lol
I tried to research it and it is probably made in Korea but it has the style points Grover Jackson left with Washburn (incidentally older company than both gibson and fender, IIRC) and it would be a CRAZY fretless because it's the opposite - it basically has NO radius on the fingerboard that thing seems FLAT. In any case, do some homework, find the players and artisans, and sometimes you get to grab something that was spawned from greatness for literally a song.
I have twin Starfield Altair SJ Custom guitars that were designed partially by Mike Lipe (who had just started what would be Ibanez LACS) and built on the j custom workbenches in Nagano...yeah LACS. :-)
My Heartfield DR5 fretless was part of a joint project between Fender and Ibanez, Fender has all that archived on their site. I was lucky to one, even if it's the bolt on model (the through necks are/were GORGEOUS)...but again, it was rough and I got it for like $450.
Keep looking, do your homework, know when the unicorns are driving by as much as possible and try to net them when you can and still pay rent.

Indeed, Code Red > Red Sub! Was thinking about doing some swappage, but I didn't like the feel of this bass enough

That was my thought too, if I got one. The pickups are EMG 45 dimensions, and the coil coverage of the 45DC would be OK at 18mm spacing, even better at 16.5mm. However, the unannounced change in the neck joint is a deal-breaker: I would prefer the one advertised, but if that had problems that mandated the change, then what are we supposed to think now?

Brother, what are you talking about? Replacing those sweet EMGs? This guitar sound exactly what I've been looking after for about 10 years (Fernandes Tremor Deluxe sound). Yes, the tuners need to be changed but that's it. Ergonomics? We (Homo sapiens) have the magic ability to get used to things, adopting. I remember once I have changed my gaming chair for a leather one. My first thought - I can't do this - I can't do any gaming on that shit. Guess what - now after a few months every time I sit on my old gaming chair I think to myself, how the f I could sit on that. I GOT USED TO my leather chair. So you having this bass for brief moment and complaining about ergonomics is at least unprofessional. GL everyone in the music adventure.

@@LowEndLobster Maybe he thought the same way I used to think when I was 15, that every active pickups are made by emg, but maybe he likes the sound that you got from the bass and amp
