Everyone needs to listen to more Frank Zappa.
Absolutely
Yes they do.
Common sense being spoken right here.
Instablaster
Shit ugly zappa changed the music World of boring assholes 🤣 🤣 🤣
No thanks 🤣
Frank Zappa a musical genius 👍
DO more Frank Zappa please. He's one of the greatest musical geniuses ever
Crazy that this song from 1966 is talking about the same issues as here in 2020. Sad that we, as a nation, haven't overcome the racism and hate...ALL RACISM IS UGLY!!!
People are still idiots. Ameh.
We got to sit around and home and watch this thing again. And I bet there won’t be many left to see it really end.
Shit zappa was an ugly boring asshole and his music too 🤣
This is my favorite rap song.
It’s the first rap song I ever heard. My favorite too.
1966!!! 54 years ago people!!!! And things haven't changed.
Thanks for bringing this song to the fore front.
I can see this song touched a sensitive nerve in both of you.
But I think it meant more to you Vin.
Maybe have a listen to "The Poodle Lecture"
65 studio albums that we know of, most double albums.
Too much music to listen to, too little time.
Frank Zappa, "the present day composer who refuses to die".
Troll, how about you change the World? Hahahaha 🤣
Without shit ugly zappa, the music World would be much better 🤣
Frank Zappa is a true one just when you think hes all funny he hi you with a serious piece of work this is my favorite serious song by him i must say.
Peace and Stay Safe!
That this came out in 1966 on his first ever record Freak Out (he was talking about the Watts Riots) and it still holds true with the Rodney King trial and today. The version on his live LP Roxy and Elsewhere is excellent, he leaves out a verse, possibly two, but it's still great. Glad you listened to the original! Spot on reaction.
He re-recorded this at least twice, and was still ending concerts with it in 1982 and 1984. Damn I miss him. Beautiful music for all us ugly people out there. I was born a few days before this was released. Yeah, he references the Watts riots in the liner notes "is how I feel about racial unrest in general and the Watts situation in particular. It was written during the Watts riot as it developed. I shopped it briefly all over Hollywood but no one would touch it . . . everybody worries so much about not getting any air play. My, my."
Zappa the Zapatista. Get zapped and become a Zapatista.
The greatest line in this song: "A fire in the street ain't like a fire in the heart." That's the only way there will ever be real change in society...
Sonically I don't think you can expect more, it was recorded in March 1966, it was also Zappa's debut album, recording sounds kind of started improving around this time, but I think the darkness of the sound suits the words.
First double album for a “rock” group ever…
The master of serious hidden in silly. Genius
Genius of boring assholes
1966. Zappa was a genius.
this song, later, inspired Aerosmith's - Eat The Rich - !!! and Mr. Zappa was is and always will be n°1 in Mind, Body, Soul, Spirit and Arts!!! a Genius!!!
I just realized this could, arguably, be one of the first rap song.
It's the same thing i though the first time I had listened to it
Without shit ugly zappa, the music World would be much better 🤣
He is actually always serious, but he was often getting censored and banned unless he used “silly” lyrics to hide the meaning.
50 years later and it's still relevant
You just listened to a rap song from 1966 . Change my mind.
I watched for the first time with you and in awe of the relevance today and the vicious cycle of repeating our past , Things change but satay the same , wow wow wow
Dumb All Over-Frank Zappa
Boy, what a song!
Thank you James!!!
Traveling back in time to June 17th, 2020 . . . . Boy are you guys going to LOVE January 6th, 2021.
Joe's Garage is a classic album
She got a tongue like a cow and Itl make you wow 😍

@@Jason17300 Zoot Allures too
The song is about the race riots in LA in the 60s.
Only in the USA America
The Vietnam war was going on then, we come home and every one is dancing, singing and fighting with each other. AMAZINK' ?
I just dropped acid, huddled up with Mad Magazine and went crazy for awhile ! ! !
A good follow-up to this song is More Trouble Everyday, a song featuring Chester Thompson (Genesis/Phil Collins's tour drummer). What makes these times seem bigger than those times is social media and its ability to immediately saturate millions of people quickly, without any filtering
First rap song?!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 Amazing Zappa!👍🏻.
This was off his very first album. Try Uncle Remus for another one of his songs regarding a similar topic.
For 1966, that album had some very heavy music for its time. It had some do wop style on there as well as some av-ant guard songs.Check out "I am the slime" topical and a lot more rocking. With all his different line ups, each era sounds a bit different. Freak out was his first album.
You make me believe there is still some hope left for America. God bless you.
we are now at February 10th 2021 , song still has a message , RIP FZ.
Nailed it re class struggle. It’s always about class, which is exactly what the powerful don’t want people discussing. Frank knew that all too well.
Simple for a Zappa song but brief and to the point.
Zappa wrote this song while watching/ witnessing the Watts riots in summer of 1965. It's still so pertinent today.
In this tune, you can hear the Johnny Guitar Watson influence on Frank's early guitar style.
This blues oriented song was being rehearsed by the band when the label execs heard them for the first time. They were signed based on the idea that the rest of their material was also blues based. Little did they know what they were in store for.
This was the first double rock album with a variety of styles and experimentation that went over budget, so the whole fourth side single track was never completed and released as is.
Listen to the live version on Roxy And Elsewhere from the early 1970s for a more professional jazz musician rendition. The original Mothers were great, but lacking slightly in their musical ability and that's why Zappa eventually disbanded them to seek out other players.
One of the first freeform rappers in da' dayz' 1960's
Viva la Zappa
"The circle" by wild man Fischer
How relevant!
” it helps to remember during times like these, that there have always been times like these."
I recommend "You are what you is" for your next Zappa react.
Pay up and they will play it
I just turned 76 years old so this is my 3rd time around seeing morons burning citys down over crap spewing from " that rotten box " that brings out the worst of our great society, and America is a great society Frank rightly spoke out in favor of weekly on CNN & Face the Nation where he was a regular guest pundit ,its sickening for me because ive watched this same shit tear america apart to its very fabric while 99% of the kids in the street are only there for a social event ,the same kids parents were in the street in the 70s spitting on combat vets & smashing me in the face with a cardboard covered plywood " protest " sign , has anybody here been paying attention to whats different this time around ? The man in office ripped the curtian down to show all of us there is zero difference between Democrat & Republican, its a uniparty mafia where thugs like the Clintons & Bush family weild more control over the direction of the country than any sitting president senator or congressman .
I think Uncle Remus would be a good one to listen to.
DonFormica In othr words, news has been fake since turn of the century, i have to laugh how these 2 esp ( check out the one on the left (still thinks news is real, ha, go lay down) is one of those types that believe everything on tv ( she is overwhelmed by news today? How? Why? Nothin's on ( I stopped reading/ watcing news) What research? You are too young, unhip, what? G. Flpyd ,ha -I saw him in an ad for a movie. jussie smollet fake ( it's lyrics, what racial issue? Go lisyen to u own type music, this isn't for your ears. Watts riots huh, ok.
@@megasomacoma670 turn of the century? Try the beginning of time. But not all news is fake and that's what you have to remember sometimes they slip the truth in there.
59 years old and still appropriate to today's issues.
Listen to the another version of this tune from "Roxy and Elsewhere". It's got horns. I really love this version though.
Vin, It seems obvious that you love to study, Frank Zappa would be a great person for you to learn about. He was a genius that was very well spoken on religion, politics, music history, Free Speech, Etc. He testified before the US senate about inappropriate lyrics in rock music.
He also appeared on Crossfire where he called the so-called liberal an asshole on live TV. Topic free speech. Someone always brings up Hitler...
@@A_Handle_2_Continue You brought up Hitler so what are you talking about?
@@MyRoom_is_old I'm sorry, that was a reference to the conversation on Crossfire. 1986. It is available on TH-cam. At about 15:55 of the 21:18 video. The kiss my ass and you're an asshole happened earlier.
Zappa was garbage
One of my Frank's pieces in absolute...
I was there 1966 ~ 67 Watts riots. And the Charlie Manson murders.
"Who are the brain police?"
freakout was such a great album.
Monty Python fans must buy Freak Out, Terry Gilliam is on it contributing vocals and he is credited, three years before the BBC series.
Remember the year this came out. 1966, the Watts Riots. King died on April 04, 1968. Puts 2020 riots in context.
This song was about the Watts riots (or civil disturbances if you prefer) in 1965 in the LA area. I first heard this tune in about 1974. I just realized that my political attitudes, really my whole life, were shaped by this song. Clearly America is still the same in many ways. Here's to Frank!
A masterpiece .. and make up songs about being poor....its kinda too bad but .. its nice to have it highlighted ...
Moonspell - Full Moon Madness
Great choice to experience my favorite composer… if you decide to go down the rabbit hole you only have about 75 more albums to listen to….
twitter and clickbait has reduced to a species that can't bear to read more than 300 characters.
Question for you guys: when V&S critique the "Sonic"(i.e. Sori didn't care for the"Sonics") are they talking about the technical audio quality or the arrangement as in what the band is playing? Anyone know?
I love music that makes you think and is still relevant today even if it's negative is the job of the artist to paint a full picture! That is Why we choose House of the Rising Sun its catchy but it has a message in it, those songs are hard to hear because of all my loses in my family this past year.
Holy shit that’s scary; 1966, 2020, same shit different decade.
Wondering when you'll get into Tom Waits. So many amazing songs to explore by him. I'd start with Time or Take It With Me
I hear your piano has been drinking.
I agree wondering when you are going to get into Wild Man Fisher and Jethro Tull and That band that was on F Troop
Could shit zappa play guitar with his ugly nose? 🤣
Zappa was garbage
I love when Zappa made a snappy comeback to Joe Pyne.
Oh, and Vin, Marx critique of capitalism is pretty spot one.
Is the song slower then normal? It really sounds slowed down.
The lyrics are still relevent over 50 years later. Will we ever learn or change?
A message from Russia 2020: Every life matters.
Frank would be really pissed off if he had lived today.
Official Video] Unlucky Morpheus - 「Unending Sorceress」. It is a Higly talented Japanese metal band.
Album "Only in it for the Money:... Listen to the first 8 songs in order and together... (10 minutes) if you want to raise your eyebrows like you did in this song...
PS: The saddest song every written is Mom + Dad, will make any Human Cry...!
You're right in that it was a reference to the Watts riots in 1965.
The original title was "The Watts Riot Song".
No Sori, it is not always like this.
1968 was the most turbulent year in American history. I have every reason to believe that this year will surpass it.
As far as the mask issue, "Those who choose temporary security over liberty deserve neither." True then, true today. BTW Frank's Dad used to work for the government back then basically as a guinea pig using skin patches infused with different chemicals. Frank as a kid used to sit cross legged, take a small puddle of mercury, hit it with a hammer to make it scatter and scoop it back together with his hands and do it again. Then he went on and made a boatload of incredible music.
MORE ZAPPA.
Frank is talking about the Watts Riots (1964), speaking the truth (politics/socially) and exposing the inherent rasism that still exists today. I bought this LP when it came out and over 50 years later it is as strong as ever. Give a listen to Brown Shoes Don't Make It, It Can't Happen Here or The Idiot Bastard Son.
This LP was the first debut double album ever released.
Frank floated a presidential run in the 80's and he had the League of Women's Voters at his concerts to register people.
The hypnotic sound is enforcing the hypnotic effect of TV/media. As in "Why do you think they call it Programming"?
Take a look at the movie Medium Cool (1969)
A "Brownie" is an old skool camera.
Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see god

Kreator - Enemy of god
Close, He was the enemy of every political party.
That's why he never had a song played on the radio, because in his own words
"he was so out of step with reality".
Stupid America.
June 1974 Billboard top 100.
The album Apostrophe reached number ten after 11 weeks on the charts.
Never had a song played on the radio.
Who does that?
Frank Zappa!!!
If this genius was allowed to have his music played on the radio, maybe he would have got the notoriety he deserved.
For those of you who never had the chance to experience Frank Zappa's music on stage.
The next time Dweezil tours in your state.
Get along and get some onya.
And if you are in Australia.
Get along to Petulant Frenzy.
Every year In Badoberan Germany there is a Frank Zappa music festival.

OK three days hiatus from the news Sori is feeling it to deep hurting her soul Vin protect your angel good sir
Necrophobic has just realesed a new single - Mirror Black
Awsome 🤘
Riots all over the place in 1966, Cleveland, Chicago, Waukegan, Cicero and Dayton to name a few.
Fantastic song by a very underrated artist. And to me, the line "Sometimes I wish I wasn't white" didn't necessarily mean that he didn't want to be white, it was more to say "I wish I could see it through another's viewpoint". Could be wrong though
I dont think Zappa is underrated, he is very well known although probably less so now.
@@insidejokesarelame inside the music community i agree with you. He's still highly revered. I was referring to the general public. Imho, he should have been one of the world's most successful musicians.
@@insidejokesarelame he is known by most serious music junkies in at least name capacity, but he was seems to be ahead of his time, no matter when that time is. Listening to songs like echidnas arf, t'mershi du'ween then turning on camarillo brillo or the blessed relief there is absolutely no way a person would be peg those as all being by one artist written within two or so years. He will absolutely stand the test of time and not be forgotten, bec he just had a level of talent and such a prolific number of albums and live recordings that he will attract a borderline obsessive fanbase
@DOA....In my experience as a musician of almost 40 years, every musician I've ever known knows who Zappa is. Or at least they know that Steve Vai started with him. But I haven't come across many non-musicians that even recognize his name. Maybe that's not the norm, but it's what I noticed in my small slice of the world. So in that regard, I think he's been underrated and not appreciated for the musical genius he was
Shit ugly zappa was a boring asshole and his music too 🤣
This is really kind of psychedelic talkin' Bob Dylan. So weird that not that much has changed as far as the subject matter.
It sounds like Frank wanted to do a Bob Dylan tune.
Except play a mean fuckin guitar solo in it
Never had that impression. Knowing FZs fondness for Clint Eastwood movies and his prior history of film score music, musically it was more in line with the concept Fist Full Of News.
Frank Zappa trying to do a Bob Dylan tune?
Are you for real?
Wanna buy some mandy's Bob?
Dylan went to Frank's house and wanted him to produce an album.
Dylan turns up and Frank's dog won't stop barking.
Dylan asks "what is wrong with the dog"?
Frank turns and replies "he doesn't like Christians".
@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 No insult intended. I listen to Frank more than Bob. It's just what I thought when I heard the song.
@@flyingardilla143 All good my friend. Drive Safe.
Thanks for the reaction. I'm ok with Sori rating this one low. It's pretty depressing especially with how things are going these days. As far as sonically, this was very early on in his musical career before he was able to surround himself with accomplished musicians and they were limited on what they could do. That's why he disbanded the band in 1969. I really struggled picking this song because it is not good musically in comparison to what Zappa did from 1969-1979 but the lyrics are and will remain very relevant to our nature as humans.
Nice pick. Do you think that there is a connection to The Velvet Underground, sonically? Though I like the later version with the Chester Thompson drum fill, this version is more raw, I can almost see the little old flickering B/W Tv screen.
PS. “In the "Genesis Revelations" book Phil Collins says he likes Frank Zappa (and this is where he heard of Chester Thompson). He also mentions using the drum fill from "More Trouble Every Day" into "Afterglow". (Live versions with this fill can be heard on "Seconds Out" and "Three Sides Live").” From wiki jawaka.
Zappa was filth
who else said, i'm ashamed to be white? ever?? fz is a god
It would be really interesting to hear what you have to say about "Dumb All Over". One of Zappas most famous religion- rants ;)
Technically this isn't Zappa, it's his former band The Mothers of Invention. This was the shit back in 1966, it was before Hendrix hit the scene. This record actually inspired The Beatles to go psychedelic.
If it wasn’t ”Zappa”, then explain how all the members of the band got fired by Zappa..? But you are right when comes to the name on the cover.
@@St_Yerbouti In his autobiography he explained that the original Mothers made a move to fire him but that wouldn't have worked out so well for them. I don't think I was wrong to say technically it's not Zappa but The Mothers.
@@bassman4632 I guess your right in a way. But it was cool that some of the Mothers joined Zappa on projects after they got fired. I have meet Don and Bunk at some festivals, and I hope to see them again. Cool cats:-)
@@St_Yerbouti Yeah Frank was definitely the acknowledged leader and genius of the collective. Hope you do see Don and Bunk again but they can't be young.
@@bassman4632 They are not young and to cancel this years festival is a bit of a disaster.
You know who played for Frank Zappa? A guy named Brian Haner. You know who his son is? Synyster Gates from Avenged Sevenfold. Please react to the album version of Beast and the Harlot.
The first rap song
50 year old song fits what is going on today.
