I love to see puppeteering being taken seriously and I think this really shows the potential it has. It’s also such a unique artistic process I reckon.
and what in your opinion is puppeteering NOT being taken seriously? been one of the most popular visual forms since televisions creation, theres no need to be on your high horse about puppeteering.
I'll tell you one thing, there are many sopranos who could learn a lot about acting from this magnificent puppet. Strange isn't it to contemplate the reinterpretation of human emotion through a nonhuman surrogate
The soprano is amazing! I think the use of the puppet is very effective, like two attendants helping an old and decrepit Alcina. I want like to see the entire production.
I see the women as attendants to a great lady, great and beautiful. I didn’t know of this opera until now. But I don’t think she is old… a woman in love is never old, she is always… a woman
I don't know if this was intentional or not, but I found her being surrounded by other women very comforting - like, there's a certain deep neglected misery it seems all women understand, and that the only comfort sometimes is commiserating with other women when it hits.
The puppeteers here are just phenomenal, they've given such life to the puppet. Even details such as the rise and fall of it's chest as if it's breathing- utter attention to detail. Incredible
I really enjoyed this concept and I thought the staging was excellent. Many productions struggle to incorporate Alcina’s true form into the performance, as the singer is frequently young and beautiful and the audience forgets just how hideous Alcina’s appearance really is! A sincere lament of an old hag, loved it!
Bravo!!!!!!
Just listened for the third time in two days... that voice... magical. Oh! My heart! Oh! My heart! How scorned you are! Stars, oh gods! You spirit of love! Traitor you are! Yet you I love! Alone you leave me with all my tears? Oh my god! Oh why?
But, what makes Alcina weep and sob? Queen I am! And time is there for us: Stay or perish, pain on end, or again love me!
Could we have more of this? This is refreshing. This is the way modern opera performance should aim for, an added element that could elevate opera into something that's both visual and audio delight. With the puppets help, the emotional part of the aria is visually presented alongside the singing which singers could not do better other than being stately and motionless. By caricaturing the role, the director is directing the attention of the audience towards another dimension of Handel's music which otherwise could not be revealed through pure watching the singer standing alone on the stage.
This is the first time ive seen puppeteering like this! The fact that I can't even process the people controlling it is fascinatingly beautiful!! I hope to see a performance like this in person!
There is something so powerful, haunting and almost supernatural about this production especially this aria. I may being silly but I don't want to be alone with that puppet in a dark room and I'm probably going to get nightmares about this. There is *POWER* in this piece god save us!
Strange thing is that, when I'm hearing the lady behind the puppet singing. I'm almost convinced that it's actually the puppet who is singing this aria ...The seemingly strong emotional ties mirrored in the expressive artistry both as verbal and related toward both the singer, and of her puppet are what make this aria quite special indeed ...
Ah, this pierced my heart! Haendel’s gorgeous aria, sung by a wonderful soprano, with a visual production that added so much to the pathos of this piece. I am so grateful!

I just found this through my video suggestions and I must say this is such a cool concept! This performance feels so tragic yet endearing. Also props to the singer. If it is hard in itself to display emotions while singing, imagine displaying them through someone/something else. That requires skill.

I've... never seen anything quite like this. There's a kind of Japanese acting using puppets, this reminded me of it. This has somehow really affected me; somehow, the symbolism I see has done this (I don't know the story of what's happening in this opera).
Wonderful singing. Hearing it for the first time. The puppet is terrifying to look at, will give me nightmares tonight, yet I can't help but watch. Can't imagine singing while moving the puppet. Movement are surreal and mesmerizing but so expressive. Haunting, beautiful. Glad I found this.
So the puppets character is a sorceress with powers of seduction. Her true form is supposed to be hideous to behold and this songs about a man that she loved running off with her sister and then her immediate plans to murder them lol.
the most endearing part is that it feels like the actual actors are like hallucinations of the puppet, consoling her, singing with her
