- L’histoire de l’opéra n’a cessé d’être hantée par des femmes ensorcelant les hommes. Alcina ne fait pas exception : elle séduit ses victimes jusqu’à leur faire oublier leur propre patrie. Danger de l’amour déréglé ou délices de l’abandon de soi ? Par-delà le merveilleux, le génie de Haendel s’attache à peindre en Alcina une femme blessée, profondément humaine et pathétique : le chant de la magicienne déchue nous inspire une étrange compassion. De cette ambiguïté, du clair‑obscur des sentiments et des travestissements du désir, la mise en scène de Robert Carsen, qui fit entrer l’oeuvre au répertoire de l’Opéra de Paris, sait jouer avec finesse.

The history of opera has never ceased to be haunted by temptresses bewitching men. Alcina is no exception: she seduces her victims to the point where they forget their own homeland. Is it a risk of perverted love or the delights of unbridled passion? Beyond the supernatural, Handel’s stroke of genius was to portray Alcina as a woman who suffers: profoundly human and touching. The song of the vanquished sorceress awakens a strange compassion within us. Robert Carsen, whose production brought the work into the Paris Opera’s repertoire, plays with immensesubtlety on this ambiguity and the chiaroscuro subtlety on this ambiguity and the chiaroscuro of emotions and hidden desires.

I don't get the negative comments on the staging: not particularly deep, sure, but that's a pretty tame scene, nothing to get riled up for. Singing good as expected, the slight detachment between singing and orchestra at the beginning happens (and also, apparently it was an issue of the dress rehearsal). By the way, when these things happens, it either bad luck of the moment or lack or rehearsing (I guess the former here) and very rarely due to the staging -that's why they rehearse!

Que triste cuando los directores de escena pretenden ser mas importantes que los compositores y los buenos cantantes terminan pagando las consecuencias.
Il y en a assez de ces mises en scène ridicules par des metteurs en scène à l'ego surdimensionné. Quand les directeurs d'opéra arrêteront-ils de prendre les spectateurs pour des crétins ? Et pourquoi pas les noces de Figaro avec des teletubbies dans un décor Madmax, un Nabucco avec un. Choeur des esclaves en lapins crétins faisant des galipettes ou encore un Didon et Enee dans les wc d'une aire d'autoroute joué en costumes de zombies ? Maria Callas en éboueur, Pavarotti en Mickey Mouse ? Arrêtez de nous prendre pour des truffes. Oui les messages véhiculés dans les opéras vieux de plusieurs siècles sont souvent intemporels et transposables dans d'autres milieux, nous le savons tous !
A beautiful voice, but when the staging gets in the way of the music making, it is unacceptable. Too often in this performance, things are out of sync between the singer and orchestra dues to lack of obscured sightlines between the stage and pit, and also too much movement on stage. The da capo was locked in and stunning, and this was due to the staging allowing for the singer to connect visually with the conductor. Whatever happens on stage, that fundamental concept of stage singing cannot be disrupted. The singer and conductor have to be able to see each other.
In Handel's time there was no conductor at all. The orchestra could see the singers.

Ces mises en scène sont-elles supposées provoquer « la bourgeoisie », à l’époque du porno à gogos ? Aujourd’hui les enfants ont accès à la pornographie dès l’âge de 12 ans en moyenne. Tout cela souligne un manque d’originalité évident et le spectacle n’en devient que plus ridicule 😏😏😏

This is not great. Devieilhe is trying to sing at a slower tempo than the conductor, who is unsympathetic lol. And the staging is boring and ugly.
Vocally it’s good but Devieilhe and her easy high register are more suited to 19th century French coloratura roles like Lakmé and Olympia than Baroque music. Dessay also ventured into Baroque hallway through her career but she did it because her voice was failing, I don’t think that’s the case with Devieilhe but maybe it was a preventative measure.
(No offense to Dessay whom I adore, and I think the jazzy albums she released late in her career are some of her best)

Aller à l’opéra c’est aller au théâtre, ce n’est pas écouter la musique de façon militaire. Sinon contentez-vous des enregistrements ou des récitals. Sabine Devieilhe est une chanteuse à la technique époustouflante, mais aussi une actrice qui sait transmettre beaucoup d’émotions. Et pour l’avoir vu deux fois ces quatre derniers mois, je peux vous dire que le public reçoit son cadeau et en redemande.

Tout à fait,alors que Sabine est notre meilleure actuellement. On n'y va pas pour leurs costumes et leurs ébats contemporains, mais pour leurs vœux,et surtout pour Haendel
