I would say that the coloring job for Barry Windsor Smith's X-Men #205 is up there. One of the best colored X - Men covers of all time too. I remember buying that one at the 7- Eleven as a kid.

BWS's coloring on MACHINE MAN is excellent as well.

BWS seems to both do great color work (Weapon X) and inspire it (Glynis Oliver over his pencils and inks in Uncanny X-Men 198).

Barry Windsor-Smith colouring his own work in the "Weapon-X" run in Marvel Comics Presents. The original printing, not the garish trade collection.

BWS' Marvel days have some of my favorite artwork. I didn't care for all of the stories, but I just love his style. There's something both 'heavy' and weighty about his art but also sketchy and almost like industrial design sketchy about it. I love it!

My favorite color job is the six issue Marshall Rogers Doctor Strange run in the 80's from #48 - #53, really wild use of different printing methods to contrast the physical world from the spirit dimension

That's a really wonderful run, and that whole era is rife with beautiful art. There's also some nice color surprint work on the backup story in Dr. Strange #46, Mike Golden coloring his own pencils with P. Craig Russell inks.

Just found you guys this last week. Amazing info and stories. I tried but failed to get anyone from Dark Horse and DC and Marvel to like my work ...so I just drew for myself. I studied all kinds of comics for tips and burned through Wizard how to draw segments. Loved the Wally Wood show even though some of his work reminded me immediately of John Severin. Love the old late eightys and early ninetys comics. Kirby and Finger were both screwed over. Unfortunately I'm a comic addict so I sold my last collection and got out of it in the mid 1990's. I live in a dead zone comic wise, but I've found some lately and have passed on piles of well loved "readers" to a local kid who like comics. I was even asked to illustrate a children's book for a friend.

I just began rereading this story yesterday, so I’m very happy to see you guys break it down, and while I was mainly focused on Romita Jr.’s artwork, Rosas did a hell of a job with his color choices and use of white. As good as it gets.

Everything about this comic is punching above it's place on the magazine rack. What a gorgeous piece of art. I don't know if the story matches the art, but I like to enjoy visuals if they're good. I mean, Tron is by no means a great movie, but it's so gorgeous to look at.

Great Job guys! IRON MAN was in my pull box when this issue came out, I rebember this fondly. Its great to compare the coloring from Living Lasers other app in IM #153 & #211. LL pulled some great performances from artists back in the 80's

  • @Pjoseph23

That really is a great looking comic! Personally, Swamp Thing Annual 2 leaps to mind when I think about impactful coloring. The Annual was one of the earlier Flexigraphic efforts, and a lot of colorists were struggling with the over-saturation that lead to a lot of gaudy books. Being in hell was a great environment that really gave the colorist a chance to put to use the new tool kit in an innovative way. Just like you call out Iron Man being near the end of non-computer color, ST Annual 2 was part of the first wave of books in the final chapter of traditional separations.

Also, if I recall, the first issue of this storyline has the same coloring style, where Iron Man is trapped in some space station wreckage, and at points delicately using his repulser rays (god this is so geeky, haha!) to free himself. The coloring really sells the emptiness and hopelessness Stark feels at points in this issue. Plus loads of perfectly horrid 80’s fashion!

What sells the coloring for me is the blacks are mostly printing over the other colors, so the blacks are selling the color effects too. And then black becomes the star on the middle panel of page 20 with just black on newsprint with the rays and on Iron Man's shoulders. Who ever cut the colors also contributed where it counts for sure. Love the print nerd videos guys!

I remember you guys talking about this issue a while back and I immediately had to go look it up. Absolutely tremendous coloring in here. Something about it feels so complex yet the contrasting colors prove so simple. Definitely an example of the story lending itself to some great experimentation with the art.

I would agree this Iron Man is awsome. We got some brief flashes of inspired color work the Micronaughts series and few titles of the Epic line like "Swords of the Corsairs", "Alien Legion" and "Starstruck" (?).
I would argue the worst of Marvel's inking was in "the New Mutants" around issue 25 with the Legion story arc. The bullpen kept praising the art, but all the readers got was page sfter page of black ink (check the quarter bins for the original printings). Perhaps you should make a what-not-to-do video comparing those books to "Sandman"

BWS' Machine Man, Weapon X, Iron-man are some nice colors. Also His recoloring of Conan's Red Nails tabloid. I'm also a BIG fan of Marvels' late 60's and early 70's color especially the Roy Thomas and Gene Colan Doctor Strange.

Hey guys, I went out an ordered the whole Armor Wars II set on ebay, and realized something. John Romita Jr went from a pretty "basic" but very good style on Amazing Spider-Man that runs from 230 ish to 295, give for take. Less than a year later, 1989 he's on Daredevil with Ann Nocenti, and then in 1990, hitting Iron Man with Byrne, and his style has changed almost completely. He doesn't look anything at all like his previous iterations. Same guy, but you're talking a change like the Beatles 1963 and Beatles 1968.
Any idea how/why/when this change occured? It's much better, just curious what happened, and how it happened so quickly. Not many artists make that kind of change so quickly, and so dramatically, after being a monthly artist for the better part of a decade. I just find it fascinating, particularly in his case.

  • @toddblackwood129

My suggestions to look at for color are Lynn Valley’s colors on Daredevil 191 and issue 4 of the Wolverine Miniseries, as well as Michael Golden’s cover for Nam 13 as well as Issue 40 of What If? I know you guys already covered both of Varley’s comics in previous episodes but it is an interesting exercise to try and pick out why her colors stand out from the previous three wolverine issues, for instance. Golden’s cover to Nam is just hot pink orange blue and white. It really shouldn’t work but it’s so striking. And the What If issue has a terrific Golden cover but Butch Guice’s interiors are vastly underrated and there’s lots of fun color holds. My favorite work by that guy.

  • @wayneworsham1299
    @wayneworsham1299 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Romita Jr's art changed drastically from his early 80s stuff, obviously originally heavily influenced by his dad, to his later/current, blocky, Simonson-by-way-of-Miller style. Although I'm not a huge JR JR fan, his art, particularly in this issue, would look as good in b&w as does with those great colors.
In a future episode consider taking a look at the art in the Byrne/Gordon FF run from the 80s (at and around the time She-Hulk replaced the Thing). Everyone remembers the Byrne/Austin X-Men but Gordon's inks brought a level of detail to Byrne's stuff that wasn't as evident before. It certainly beat the heck out of Byrne's muddy solo issues. The Byrne/Gordon stint was one of the first teamings that turned me on how much an inker could distinguish himself from the penciler,

Very cool, guys! Iron Man by JRjr channeled Kirby ,definitely he’s cracking it out of the park! Monthly mayhem output also DD with amazing Al Williamson inks! Iron Man 256 by Bob Layton,JRjr,Harry Candelario,&colors by Paul Becton! Shell head trapped in a space station that has decaying orbit and all kinds of other things to deal with! One &done tale with color works to set mood in space station etc! Not as flashy as Living Laser lightshow but subtle! Definitely not cookie cutter hack job! Love this book and the one you guys reviewed! Thanks again!
