    Yeah, get yourself the Dingbat Love collection by Twomorrows! Along with the two unpublished Dingbats stories it’s got some great background features, including concept art where we learn Non-Fat was created by Kirby to be a young black kid.

    Just finished Tom Sciolis Jack Kirby book. What better to wake to then a kayfabe look at Kirby. Side note, everyone should pick up that book, soon as I finished I just wanted to start it over.

    The Warlord is the only First Issue Special that made it to series. Also, this came out three years into Fat Albert's original run, not before.

    I had this at the time of publication, and it was one of the few comic read by myself and my siblings because it was FUNNY! Siapstick humor funny. Not forced parody funny like Cracked or Mad magazine. Imagine that. In a world where 98% of Comics were devoted to Superhero/other action, this stood out. An actual funny book for kids too old for Casper or Archie. Yes the dialogue was dated. Back then we didn’t care. Probably the funniest thing Kirby did since an issue of Rawhide Kid. Kid walks into a Saloon. Orders not Sasparillo, not Whiskey, but Milk. Straight up. Local Gunslingers laugh, local pandemonium ensures.
    Odd you should mention the cartoon pitch. This may have partially inspired a tv pilot; The Bums of San Pedro. Didn’t go anywhere, as the characters were adults. But the Cosby Kids reference? I dig it.

    I love that you guys love The Dingbats of Danger Street! They did eventually publish the other two issues in a hardcover collection along with his black romance comic book series. Definitely worth adding to any Jack Kirby fan's collection!

    Kid gangs was definitely something Kirby was a expert at. Hope you do Boy commandos and the Guardian and the Newsboy Legion. And please review Manhunter and Atlas one day in the future.

    All those 1rst Issue Specials are a trip! I love Dingbats the most but all the Kirby ones are gold. The whole series is worth tracking down but #1 is more than all of them because it's the first appearance of Mike Grell's Warlord

      #8 is the Warlord issue, and yeah goes for like $25 on mycomicshop. Issue #1 was Atlas by Kirby, which I absolutely love!

    Awesome video boys! I raced home after work to the comic shop and was able to pick up both Octobriana(black light version) AND the 1st treasury edition Xmen grand design. I am very impressed with your talent, and love the channel. Thank you

    Kirby did multiple stories for Not Brand Ecch. It would be nice to see your perspective on those as well as getting some Marie Severin on the channel

      Kirby and Simon also did a film parody, “20,000 Lugs Under the Sea,” in a Charlton comic called From Here to Insanity.

    Those 70s DC Joe Simon books like Green Team and Champion Sports were usually really drawn by underappreciated workhorse Jerry Grandenetti.

    the kid wearing the derby on the cover of boy commandos -- was that character the basis for the late 80s early 90s character dan turpin in the superman books? i know they used a lot of kirby creations in that run of superman, so was curious.

    • @russworks2882
      @russworks2882 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that's right; I remember that someone post-Kirby decided that Brooklyn grew up to be Turpin, who first appeared in Kirby's New Gods. Both characters seemed pretty autobiographical to me.

    Thanks for doing the first issue specials, though Atlas is my favorite of Kirby’s batch. Look forward to a look at Kirby’s kid gangs, Boy Commandos etc. And can somebody please tell me what is Non-fat’s ethnicity?
