- In Contra-Tenor, Michael Spyres ventures to the time of the castrati to bring to light the wealth of tenor repertoire left behind. Discover the album, recorded with Il Pomo d’Oro and Francesco Corti, here: w.lnk.to/c-tLY
As Michael points out: "The fame of the castrati in the mid-1700s has long been established, but very few people realize just how famous their contemporary tenor rivals were." The program highlights composers from Lully to early Mozart by way of Handel, Vivaldi, Rameau, Gluck, and lesser-known figures in world premiere recordings.

This man is a veritable force of nature!
What a baritenor! And the most incredible is that he sings effortlessly
❤
Michael Spyres is one of the greatest artists of our century
ABSOLUTELY and AMEN!!!!!!!
I cannot comprehend singing with such delicate power. Such magnificent grace.
I am dumbfounded.
Apart from the exceptional virtuosity and span if three octaves, Mr Spyres demonstrates such nuanced and exquisite musicality and subtle tones. A treasure chest of colours and brilliance❣️❣️❣️Thank you for this stunning performance all round 💐 Love the barefooted harsichordist😄👌🏽
Yes! To all the above... nothing else to add except I hadn't noticed the bare feet 😅😂
Incroyable !!! Michael Spyres est vraiment phénoménal !! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Today’s best tenor. Full stop. The virtuosity is fascinating - and the voice is just beautiful. I don’t want to hear any other singer in this repertoire.😊
He spoiled me for all other singers 😳, to him, I can listen for hours 😊.
The greatest tenor of all time.... WOW!
One of the best lyrical voice of the 21 century
The world's greatest tenor! 👏
His approach of music shows that this shouldn't be rigid as many people see it. During the baroque era, nobody cared about the label one would put on your voice, it was just about beauty. Singers can venture out of their boxes if done intelligently, just like here.
Thank you Michael Spyres
Perhaps I don't understand your meaning, but the music is quite specific, in range and interpretation. It's something you can't see much anymore for that reason. It's for castrati. It wasn't about liberation of any sort.
Que voz tan única! Que gran regalo para la humanidad
I can't speak for Antoine but I think he means that within the confines of the author's intent, he is putting "his own mark" on the aria with the conductor's permission with his breath control, phrasing, loudness, and embellishment. I agree with Antoine, the piece is not a holy grail but is a specific guide to enhance the music and intentions of the composer. i see this with sacred works, it is always sung in a certain way and it gets old.
I just can’t believe what I’m listening to. ❤
His facial expressions are just gorgeous
La très grande classe ! C est formidable
This is probably my 30th time listening, I'm absolutely in love with this, the emotion, anger, grief, its beautiful
I hear it while doing dishes, laundry, clean my house in general. And ALWAYS sing along 😀
he's just out of this world, love him.
Stunning Michael Spyres, he amazes me every time i see and hear him on stage, outstanding artist and beaming personality 🤩🤩😇🌷💥💯💯💯💯
Amazing clear voice, even at the edges of a significant large range !! Just amazing!!
Eine wundervolle Stimme ❤👏👍🌻
Oh his voice 😍😍😍😍😍
Mastery. Thank you
Just listened for first time. Astonishingly beautiful.
What a magnificent album this is! Would love to hear Spyres sing Orfeo or Ulisse in Monteverdi's Operas. They really require a "baritenor" voice with floridity.
Thanks God for Michael Spyres! Never stop admiring his ability to combine virtuosity with the greatest charm❤❤❤
Was just in London & was fortunate to catch him at Wigmore Hall w/Il Pomo d'Oro (here)...he was spellbinding....
I love this man ❤
🤗ich auch !!!!
I now have this album and it's fabulous. Can't stop listening ❤
5:30 I did not expect that, bravissimo!!
Listen carefully, world of the opera today.....here is a smart lesson in tenor-singing and no need for stage design and other not real important things.....there is a need for voice voice voice and it means : acting voice and here we have it. Let Michael sing Orfeo.
@Lady Izolde agree. And forget Mr Kaufmann
Yes, please!
Brilliance all the way! A warm, profound performance by Mr Spyres!
Fantastique...Bravo
He is the best, fenomenal
Amazing! Thanks for posting this video! Unbelievable vocal school! Bravo!
What can I say after hearing this jaw-dropping performance?
Simplemente maravilloso
It's divine
Amazing
Fabulous. Waiting for the complete album’s release.
@Lady Izolde You bet I shall!
Hi again. Great album. As you obviously have a liking and understanding of the singing voice, what are your thoughts on the Canadian bass-baritone Phillippe Sly? He appears to be equally at home with baroque as well as e.g.later Schubert liede. I find him intriguing and possibly underexposed. Just wondered if you had any thoughts. many thanks. DJ.
@Lady Izolde great voice though, don’t you think?
Wow! 😎
Excellent! Thank you so much
Incredible!!!
You, sir, are nothing short of inspiring..
Bravo!💥🎶
The best 😀☺️👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Bravissimo 👏🏻💐
¡¡ Magnifico tenor ( Baritenor ) hermosa y versátil voz ..!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻❤
Bravo Bravo Bravo
Simply a virtuous
BRAVISSIMO!!!❤❤❤👋👋👋💐💐💐
Bravi🎼🫶
Hands up! ❤
Dear Marvel Universe, can you make Michael Spyres a MU hero with his marvelous voice as his superpower?
Now you can breathe 😅, brilliant performance.
What a lively performance!
👏👏👏👏👌👌👌👌😎❤️ molto bene.
Bellísimo !!!
MARAVILLOSO!!!! MARAVILLOSO!!!!!💖💖💖💖💖
Amazing performance. (high F# :)
👏Bravo 👏 Bravo 👏 ❤🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
The singing was so good. It was so touching! If the u channel true falsetto conversion technology will be better, may wish to discuss together! Love you, brovo
The little squint at the end, I could see his mind searching for where he could have done better even though he delivered an impeccable performance!
Grande
Wow!
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🎉
Es curioso pude ser tenor.Y Barítono.Cosa hermosa y extraña a su edad
✨❤️👏
Alter..... Wahnsinn... Das ist hohe Kunst
Fabulous! Where can I find the sheet music for this piece of art?
Atemberaubend!
Fabulous! Where can I find the sheet music for this song?
EARGASM.
❤️❤️❤️
❤
😮😂😮😂 astounding
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Bravo MAESTRO. 🎩 CHAPEAUX
💖💗💚💙🧡💝❤💜 ..
😍
The craziest thing about this is its not even really touching the borders of his range somehow. He definitely has at least an A5 in falsetto (though the video was deleted by the time i went to watch so I cant verify personally) and he pretty regularly sings lower than F#2 in full voice, down even to C2, and a reaaaaally quiet B1 during an interview....
😳😳
5:33!
He nailed that!
No tenor can perform coloraturas like a good countertenor. Anyway I like very much this incredible interpretation.
Absolutely remarkable. I do wish he had not struck that high note though. Not necessary. Just because one can does not always mean one should.
5:32 G5 right?
5:30 Ok:
1 how the hell does he slide from falsetto to full voice that easily
2 it is falsetto right? How come it sounds so similar to his full voice compared to most tenors? Is it that thing abt Baritones having thicker vocal chords and thats why lots of falsettists are that?
It has to be falsetto though, Ive heard him sing several E5 and one F5 in full voice and they sounded different than these (though F# I know)? Idk Ive given up trying to understand how this dude can do these things lol
