The Haunting of Hill House is one of the most talked about shows on streaming right now. If you haven’t seen it, you really should as it’s masterfully done. It’s also really creepy at times and has more than a few scary moments. But while we were too busy being scared and being absored in the mysteries of Hill House, there were a ton of little details you likely missed the first time around. Some of them are story beats, some of them are Easter Eggs, but they’re all well hidden but mind blowing. The most well known one now is the hidden ghosts, which are standing in plain sight in the middle of many episodes but the camera never draws any attention to them. But from there, we get even more obscure. There is a haunting significance to what Nell is wearing when she’s haunting her siblings. Luke says the phrase “seven keeps you safe” a few times in the show, but that saying has more than one meaning in this series. Everyone is shown to have a Red Room on the show-except for Hugh that is. But that may not be totally true in fact. There’s a pretty clever easter egg referencing E.T. but when you find out why they have an E.T. reference, you’ll begin to question space and time. Olivia mentions to the kids the signifiance of flashing the porch lights to come home, and it seems Hill House hasn’t forgotten that. Theo is shown to be emotionally unstable for most of the series, but she in fact ends the show married despite us never seeing it! The Twin Thing is an important aspect for Luke and Nell, but the connection may be deeper than simply connection to emotions. The Red Room was a big mystery for the whole show, but the clues to it’s reveal were given throughout the season and we just didn’t realize it. Finally, the five Crain children actually represent the five stages of grief! Once you know that, the show takes on a whole new meaning.

One of the most heartbreaking moments was when Theo was explaining how she touched Nell and felt nothing.. This show was INCREDIBLY written, I don’t think anything can top this.

I cried throughout whole episode. I don't understand how they did it, but this show was not only scary on the basic horror level, but more importantly it was emotionally scary. Maybe it's the way they portrayed all the characters that made me feel somehow attached to them... I don't know. All I know is that I have never cried this much watching a horror.
@@asias950 This is what happens when you can dedicate 10 hours to tell a story instead of only 2 like most movies. Gives lots of time for character development so that you actually end up caring what happens to all of them.
I don't know if this is coincidence or intended, but during the Bent Neck Lady episode I think that Nell realized that Luke would never stop using while she was taking her meds because of the Twin Thing they got going on. Ever since Nell stopped taking her meds, Luke stopped using as well.

Especially the scenes where Luke is trying to walk and count to get rid of him, but whenever he turns there he is.
One of the creepiest scenes was nell dancing all alone by herself in that deep dark haunted house. That was really creepy.

This horror movie is trying to give psychological horror rather than we see in most horror movies like horror faces blood coming from the eyes etc scene.. this movie has nothing these things, but still giving us horror.
The song. I had loved that song for Years and ever since that scene, the two are intertwined. That f*cking scene haunts me whenever I get the song stuck in my head! I both love it and hate it. 😢

Just rewatched this scene with my boyfriend and was talking about how that monologue was the perfect "campfire" scary story. No blood or gore, just words. Yet still powerfully disturbing and with the personal touch of the classic "I was there, I saw it" element. It absolutely was "his place" to state his observations. He was honestly the only one who could say it was, considering his entire life experience was basically on the grounds. (From the fictional characters point of view of course.)
That whole monologue is perfect and heart-wrenching and terrifying.
This is possibly the only show where I've wanted to hug every single character at some point. The Dudleys specially...

Can people stop saying Nell killed herself please. Nell thought she was putting on a necklace, she didn't intend to kill herself, nor did the house kill her, not directly anyways, the house tricked Olivia, and Olivia gave Nell a push, she didn't jump, she didn't even realize what she was doing until she fell and passed. Nell wasn't weak, she'd always fought through her fears, she wasn't going there to kill herself, she went there on the therapist's suggestion that "it was just a house", and she'd realize that if she went back. Nell although feeling somewhat a sense of relief from dying in some ways, didn't want to die - she loved her family, Luke especially, and wouldn't have put them through that pain.

@@bronteyoung6033 Yeah if you re-watch the scene again she's putting on the necklace and then it's cuts to a shot of her with the noose around her neck, I think I was "lucky" enough to catch it the first time and be like "no, no, no, NO!" It's weird, the more you watch the show the more you notice, a lot more than the things listed in here, it's a fantastic show.

most foreshadowing to me was when Olivia held young luke and nell and just blinked and suddenly Hugh held Luke while Nell was still in her arms and that was already when she was fearing losing them.
Hugh took Luke but Nell stayed with Olivia just like in the future

Elizabeth Reaser who plays Shirley also plays Esme Cullen in Twilight. In The Haunting of Hill House Shirley’s husband Kevin says she should send Nell’s body to Carlisle because he’ll do a great job. Esme Cullen was married to Carlisle Cullen in Twilight. Shirley also named the first dead kitten Jasper when she was younger. Esme Cullen has an adopted son named Jasper Hale.

She was trying to keep him there which means she wanted to kill all of them so that they can be with him forever in their forever home. She even has this scene in the end with Elder Hugh where she says that this Hill House is their forever home and they all should be in here. She was brainwashed by the ghost of Poppy( the mad wife of the mad guy, William Hill). The porch light we see blinking twice was actually their mom calling them in, not the house, because it was her rule. That's what I feel.

When Steve shows her what he found in the play room she again says "what room?'
Olivia murdered Nell. She didn't deliberately fall. I don't know why people insist she did. Olivia gave her a push the same way she was given a little ghostly push.
The writers even explained this. Neither would have died without the "push"

I see it as the house and it’s ideals murdered Nell, it simply poisoned and used Olivia to do so
Yeah, Olivia was driven to kill herself by Poppy, who was going to push her but didn't. Olivia made the initial fall herself so I can see how that's a suicide. Nell on the other hand was murdered. She went to the house to face her fears and had no intention of committing suicide. Olivia tricked her into putting on the noose by making it look like a necklace and pretty much moving her to the edge. When Nell realises this she looks absolutely terrified and calls for her mother, but is pretty much pushed. She wouldn't have died had Olivia not tricked her.
Episode 5 was probably the most beautiful and heartwrenching piece of storytelling I've ever seen.

If this Is the episode where Nell dies, i agree, i cried so much... Her face expresions were so on point, it felt real... The house played with her feelings so bad, she just wanted to be happy... Im not sure if i can see that episode again... Poor Nell

Underrated moment: When dudley explains his story of the hill house and how his wife suffered when staying at night there. I got goosebumps while he was explaining
Not to mention INCREDIBLE ACTING by Mr. Dudley! It was a loooong shot focused on his face alone and he DELIVERED.
I’m surprised they didn’t mention Theo’s callback to the original source material. She gets her powers after holding onto what she thought was her sister’s hand. When she turned around nobody was there and she asks aloud “Who’s hand was I holding?”
This was included in every adaptation before it. A woman is scared and is being held onto for comfort by someone behind her. After the danger is gone, she turns around, and again, no one is there. She asks the same question as Theo.
I thought that was really creative, especially being how Theo is able to read people and objects using her hands after that experience.

Yeah, this was explicitly explained. First shown with his seven army men around the picture of the monster in the hidden basement, and then fully explained to his sister with her buttons.

I think the Easter egg was the family would always grow back to seven, even if there's 3 people missing, 7 will come back in marriages, children, etc.
There are seven steps between twins' beds; Luke takes seven steps to reach his sister's bed as you can see in the same episode where Luke tells her sister to count to seven whenever she's afraid. This is the reason why Luke counts seven steps every time he's afraid. That's the Easter egg.

Why is no one talking about how gangsta Hugh was and how he protected his children (as best he could). He was the only who was not afraid of the ghosts. He should have told them the truth but other than that, he was the real MVP!
Also, Luke's speech at Nell's funeral was my favorite moment of all!!! I loved this show!
The whole “two storms” episode being filmed in many really long one takes with one lasting over 17-minutes shows how well filmed and professional the cast and crew of this show really were. One of the best things I have seen on film in my life!!

Also, she always touches the same side of her head when they start. It is the same side that gets smashed when she jumps and unalives herself. The migraines are a foreshadowing of what’s to come

Honestly, this show was a masterpiece. They kept like a million different little threads all going at the same time. Best horror show ever, without a doubt.

@@kcallamajaji There's a story posted by one of the writers on r/nosleep on reddit. Those are apparently the dogs owned by Mr. Hill who were later killed.
Hopefully there will be a prequel with some back stories :)

But apparently, someone said 'If there is a season 2, it won't be about the crain family' I haven't researched that yet though, so what they said may or may not be true.

They’ve said if there’s a second season that a lot of the original cast will return, but not as the same characters. They’ll return as new characters with a new story line. Kind of like American Horror Story does. I like that idea. It’s kind of like a series of shorts except each story has its own season, and the mystery is solved by the end (instead of leaving us waiting on a cliff until it comes back). It’s satisfying to me to end it knowing all of the secrets and answers, then starting a new story! Keeps me interested.
It does suck that we won’t be seeing any more of this family, but I’m excited to see new stuff.
At the funeral home when Hugh gets there, there are several panoramic views. Hugh sees his kids as children . At one point on the scan, there is no body in the casket, then you see it again. When Hugh goes to look at Nell, she is a child.

@@4Ts20 one time I remember off hand is when the adult father and son are upstairs in one of the episodes near the end. They are standing between the statues on the second floor. It completely reminded me of the statues in Doctor who and I watched them. It happens with a camera angle change. It goes from on them to down the hall I think then when it's on them again the statue is looking at them, if I recall correctly.

They do y’all about it within the show. Theo says that she saw nothing, felt nothing. That it was an overwhelming feeling of nothing. And that was scarier to her than seeing something because that meant she could feel SOMETHING. afterwards, she said the feeling followed her and that’s why she was trying to feel ANYTHING at all. Which is why she kissed her sisters husbands she apologized and told her sister this. She was desperate to not feel that immense feeling of emptiness.

I could be completely wrong but I think I'm close. Nell was the hardest for me to place in the deadly sins for sure.

Matthew Dardick I agree Nell is the hardest to place. When I think of the sin sloth I think of deliberately lazy people. I don’t see that at all in Nell... I see depression more so considering she killed herself and went through a deep depression when her husband died.
@@mousemiot I see your point. Though laziness is a form of depression and falls in the same category. Considering it's a mental state it certainly couldn't be completely realized yet. Sloth can take many forms. Her sleep paralysis for one is meant to slow her down and progresses her depression. My point is you don't have to be inherently lazy to be slothful.

I just noticed something while watching episode 7. It’s when Hugh goes to see Theo because he can’t get in Shirley’s house just yet.
He asked Theo if “we” could come in. The subtitles say “I”, but after playing it over and over again, I could swear Hugh said “we”.

I just finished the show today I still remember the car scene. When the two sisters where fighting I was like SHUT UP and then the jumpscare happened. It was a relief.
The best movie scene was Timothy Hutton and that woman in green when she was telling Timothy's character about the Grattan family.
The poem about how the family had died and Timothy's reaction was excellent.
As always Timothy Hutton is spot on.

Olivia beautifully portrayed the struggles of a mom just to save her children from a horrible future (literally and figuratively).
I’ve always thought about how trippy it’d be to have ghosts randomly pop up in a horror movie , so glad this show did it and did it right!

One of the moments I liked about the show was when young Nell reappeared after she went missing, she told other family members that she was right there, screaming but none of them heard her and how well that was synced with view of her casket. In adult life also, the same happened - she was screaming of pain but other family members didn't heard her.
Did you even watch the show if you missed the porch light thing, it was so obvious
he also missed mentioning Shirley's model of the "forever home". in one of the scenes before it gets ruined the porch lights flicker twice, and when noticed I thought that at was a kind of cool easter egg.
I've never seen better writing in my life. I finished this series a few months ago, and I'm almost done watching it again. I pray we get a good 2nd season.

Along with the background ghosts, in every room of the house, there are face like images on the walls. In the wallpaper, the mold, the wood paneling. It’s like the house itself is watching everything unfold.

This is definitely one of those shows that is incredible on the first watch, but can also be watched time and time again. Each time I've watched it, I've picked up on a few more little bits of info. An outstanding show!
This show is absolutely incredible, as is the entire haunting series! The script was so well crafted. So much detail was put into this show. The storyline and the acting is amazing! Definitely one of my favorite shows of all time!!
I picked up on the 5 stages of mourning when I was watching it. However, I thought that Luke would be bargaining as he's constantly pleading with someone for something. I figured Theo for depression as she just seems constantly depressed and isolated.
TheRepty818 What’s important in distinguishing between them is the order of the five stages of depression. Bargaining is the third stage: Theo is the third-born and her episode number is three. Depression is the fourth stage: Luke is fourth-born (the older of the twins) and his episode number is four.

The 5 stages thing isn't a formula and not everyone experiences all of them, or in any particular order.
Threadbare_Saint Yes, I understand not everyone experiences grief the same way. I’m referencing the model Elisabeth Kübler-Ross originally put forth in her book. And when you learn about grief, the five stages *are* taught in that order. The order of the episodes and the birth order of the Crain kids obviously mimics the model.

Sara Annie that is not entirely true. The uploader can put ads in his/her video after certain time stamps, if the video is longer then 10 minutes. But usually every video starts with an add so there is pretty much always an add if that is what your were referring to?

Episode 6 of Hill House... One of the best TV episodes ever!!
Also, now it makes sense why Olivia kept wanting to kill her children by bringing them back to the house like what she did to Nell cuz she was manipulated by the villain ghost, Poppy. To Olivia, she and her children are constantly living in this nightmare that she wanted them to wake up from and the only method is to kill them. And notice, not all the ghosts in the house are bad. Hazel hill, the old grandma ghost that lived in the master bedroom did warn Olivia about Poppy, telling her that she is a liar and she shouldn't trust her.

Why is nobody asking what is through the door in the cellar? Young Theo went down after the zombie ghost grabbed him and she went down and opened an ominous looking door for the scene to cut to another scene without ever showing what was in there.
It was a cabinet, and that's where she found the logbooks detailing the illegal booze sales. The cut to make it seem scary and later reveal she found a records book and shows it to her mom.

Her mom explained to Theo later on that the ledger was receipts of illegal moonshine sales during Prohibition when alcohol was banned by US Constitutional Amendment 18. The OP was talking about how the scene of her opening the creepy door in the secret basement cut away without showing what was there, but the door was just a cabinet and Theo found the ledger inside. The creepy music, vibes, and cut were all to make it seem like she'd seen something, but it was mood setting cause she could sense she wasn't supposed to see what was in the cabinet (previous owners of the house had been making and selling moonshine illegally and obviously didn't want to get caught and arrested for doing so).

Absolutely loved this show. I did catch a few of the ghost initial and I noticed the lunch box. Not focusing on the ghost and just letting them be in the background was brilliant.

Can't get enough of the show... I keep watching it again and again. It's not creepy in a conventional way, it rather plays with your emotion and logical mind. I got so attached to the characters that I feel like I can't let them go!

about the 5 stages of depression, in episode 4 (if im not wrong) Luke mentions he never gets past stage 4, Luke is the 4th crain kid and represents the 4th stage of grieve, thats just a lil hint that not many people seem to notice
One thing that I've noticed is that Nell's therapist is played by Russ Tamblyn who played Luke in the original 1963 movie "The Haunting".
Another thing (for those who have seen the 1963 version) is Mrs Dudley's line in the movie "In the night...In the dark" which is pronounced exactly the same by Annabeth Gish in the Netflix series. I loved that reference because "The Haunting" is one of my favorite ghost movies.
Other than the main victims (Nellie or Luke), every characters situation made me cry especially Theo's who was so broken. I literally cried watching this show.
