Nell wasn’t “genuinely happy” to see her dad- she was genuinely heartbroken. She didn’t want the house to get him. Hugh and Nell will certainly counteract any further attempts from Olivia to get the other Crains back to the house

The scene with Luke being followed by the Bowler Hat ghost while waiting for Steve to find him always struck me as being a metaphor for addiction, especially with Luke's voiceover about how addiction is always two steps behind you accompanied with shots of the ghost just floating closer and closer behind him the more he walks away.
My sisters and I had a theory that the house is only “evil” to the living - that it is a safe haven for the dead (hence why the caretakers chose to die in there, and why not all of the spirits in it are malevolent). But because it is a house for the dead the living cannot stand to be in it and are sometimes driven insane. The house and it’s inhabitants want the living residents of the house to die so they can all be safe in the house together.
I'd like it if season 2 (if it ever happens) shows the events that led up to the ghosts of the house. When first watching it I thought there was only one family of ghosts but at the end, and all the characters I realised just how many the house had taken. I want origins for the ghosts and how the house became so evil. I know we got snippets of it from Poppy and dream Trish, but I'd love to see each episode being stand alones in the time line, showing how the ghosts came about.
I'm also curious if the Hills are the origin of the supernatural events or if they were 'victims' of the house itself. One thing is known is that the Hills were bootleggers and therefore, basically gangsters. So I wonder if many of the ghosts who are not of the Hill clan (Poppy, Hazel, William, Edward, the boy in the wheelchair, etc) are their victims or associates.
I'm not sure if it has the reason the house became so evil, but if you go on reddit one of the show's writers often posted on r/nosleep about some of the ghost's background stories. Just look up r/nosleep haunting of hill house. They're an interesting read :)

No, the writers saw the theory that viewers came up with regarding the stages of grief and realized what a fantastic theory it was and wished they had though of it. Pretty cool when writers admit that the general public have thought of things that the writers wished they had thought of! I thought this admissions was really cool of them to acknowledge.

XOmangoXO the sheriff was called when Hugh found Mr. Hill’s body in the wall. He (the cop) was super suspicious of Hugh ever since then because of how weird he was acting. I don’t think he suspected Hugh of murder but I do think he got the feeling that something was definitely wrong there. People react to the house in all different ways.
Am I the only one who thinks this show is one giant metaphor for mental health? Like there’s so many things that might not make sense if you look at it like that but I re-watched the opening credits the other day and the part at the end with the image of the house from above with no roof (the walls moving etc), the house kinda looks like a brain?
What's positive about this series is that you can watch it over and over and over again, and it will never get boring (IMO). Simply because you never know what happened exactly... Even after watching it 10 times..
The house isn’t evil, it just contains the Lasser glass from oculus. In episode 1 @ 37:25, the music builds to a crescendo and the tension peaks as the camera cuts to Nellie dancing in the reflection of a mirror that looks exactly like the Lasser Glass from Oculus. The nature of the Lasser glass is the same as how the house is described. It’s hungry, it feeds on souls, it breaks its victims down psychologically and uses them to kill others. There’s so many other similarities, it can’t be coincidence.
I have a hard time believing that it was about "over parenting" by Olivia. If anything, she seemed aloof, very preoccupied with her career as an architect. Her kids seemed to get lots of space to do their own thing. If that were the point, I would think that she be portrayed as either a tiger mom, helicopter mom, or at least a hyper domestic type constantly baking cookies and such.
Regarding the stages of grief theory, also notice how Luke says he can "never get past stage 4" in rehab, which would make sense if he is stage 4 of grief. I don't know much about rehab centers and the show doesn't make it clear what stage 4 is, but I think completing it has something to do with making amends or acknowledging one's wrong-doings from what was implied. If this is the case, it would definitely connect well with stage 5 being acceptance.
This show was beautiful. I always love to predict things happening in shows, but this one never let me do that. Not even once. A true masterpiece and my favorite show ever
The house is evil. One of the writers for the show posts subplots on reddit that they couldn’t fit into the show because of time or money or something. There was one about someone’s dad taking home leftover wood from when the house was being built to add a bedroom onto his own house, and then being haunted in that specific room. The theory that the house isn’t evil doesn’t make sense with Count_to_seven’s subplot post.
Technicly if you think about it, Olivia did kill her daughter Nelly. When she gave her that rope and pushed her to "wake up" it was really Olivia and not some ghost possesing her. She was just brainwashed and wanted her to come with her and "wake up"
That body was found way before the mother committed suicide 🤦 besides that wasn't an actual "body" it was a skeleton and looked like the dude had been dead for years
Ya me too. But in that show the ghosts were siverely inhumane. Like there was more evil in that show than emotion. Hill house is different in a way that its more dramatic and deals with issue like depression, substance abuse and family bonds.

I really liked the mold idea. I actually read ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ short story for my literature class last year and always thought the wallpaper had lead or arsenic in it or was covering up mold which made the wife crazy in the end. I’m fascinated with real explanations to supernatural stuff. There’s a theory that carbon monoxide can make people hallucinate ghosts and alien abductions. But I’m also super fascinated with the supernatural aspects too.
You would probably really like Fall of the House of Usher a short story by Edgar Allen Poe that shows the correlation between bad deeds and physical decay
This show was definitely one i’ll never stop thinking about. I was absolutely flabbergasted when I finished watching it for the first time. The way it was put together and how everything links is honestly mind blowing. Although it’ll never hit as hard as the first time you watch it I love that you still notice so many Easter eggs, hidden ghosts and other hidden links between the episodes when you go back to watch it again!!
I took Olivia's dead eye stare to mean that she is accepting this arrangement but will not be happy until all of her kids are dead and what she would consider "safe" with her. So I guess when insane people die, they're still insane.
I like the stages of grief theory! Makes sense more so then the others. With the black mold being being poisonous, as it is, I noticed whenever they showed everyone wearing masks downstairs Olivia never wore one, she may have held one to her face for a second but she always took it off right away. I think that could mean a lot.
It is also about different shapes of fear, fear of parenting, fear of growing up, from direct to more complex types of fear. It is about the effects of fear in different stages of existence. About what fear is exactly and the different types of perspective suited for exploring it.
I love in season 2 they explore more about the ghosts that haunt in there as well as explain why it is haunted and such, also include like a demon that lurks somewhere in the house as well as the mysterious dog that had been heard and mentioned
In the end it showed so many and there were so many hidden throughout the season in the background so the house has a fair number of ghosts. Not to mention the dogs they kids would hear each night and the dog-wolf creature, though that might be the same as the dogs
What about Nell’s therapist? I know it’s a stretch but what if he’s just another ghost trying to get her back to the house? The therapist was mentioned a couple times after Nell died so
when i first watched this show, it exceeded my expectations and amazed me. i loved every minute of it. i can’t really explain how much i truly loved it.
So I do have one explanation for how the ending had to be real. The House is shown to be able to bring people back to different points in their life that may have happened somewhere else but this ability seems largely based on the person’s memories. It doesn’t seem to have the ability to create illusions of people in the moment. Only to bring back spirits of people who have actually died in the house. Assuming this is true, the fact that Theo’s girlfriend is in the cake shot would confirm that it’s actually happening because she’s never been to the house.
Hill house reminded me a lot of season 1 of American Horror Story (still the best AHS season!) That's also about a house in which the inhabitants and everyone who dies there remain there as spirits/ghosts, but in a very physical form
You said "she was convinced she had to kill her children to save them". That's not true, it's pretty obvious that she thought everyone was dreaming, and killing them was a way to make them wake up
The theory about the police officer finding future Hugh’s body while finding Olivia’s could be possible. It happened in Insidious. Younger Josh seen his future self along with him seeing Elise and Carl ( I think Carl ).
When I first started watching this show, I thought that the ghosts were just the statues coming to life because they sort of looked like the statues, a little bit and also the intro and the emphasis based on the statues at the beginning. Now I feel like the mold is the best theory!
If the house isn't alive how does it keep the door to the redroom closed? And how does it keep the redroom changing for whoever is inside of it? How does the house stop the fire that Luke tries to start? ...No, the house is definitely alive.
I really want to re-watch this show now. The two mold theories are really interesting. There's the bit where Steve unplugs the fan, his dad gets his hand sliced, and they look over to see its still plugged in, but that could simply have been the mold affecting Steve's memory, and his dad bumping the switch or doing something so it turns back on.
Loved this show! NETFLIX another smash original series!! I hope there are more seasons. Loved the entire cast, both kids and adult versions alike! I don’t see how they can continue with the same cast especially the kids! But I’d love it if they can. Or they could do the house and it’s 100 year history. The Hill Family themselves! And how it all started. With time life confetti, Olivia, Hugh & Nelly could them be ghosts in the background.
The second body is definitely the one behind the walls. Just because it's decayed doesn't mean that it's not a body. Not sure why that gets dismissed so easily.

Dina M there's nothing to suggest that the other body they were referring to was one from that night specifically. If I found a body in the house a week or even a month before then I would also be worried they could think "hey, what if this guy had something to do with this one too" - it was also the same cop as well so he would know exactly the body he was talking about
I have to agree with the mold theory. You could have had the last episode reveal that the ghosts were never really there, and it still would have worked. It would have been one of those "Are you f*cking KIDDING me?!" moments, but still feasible.
The true antagonist of the show was never Hill House, it's Olivia Crain. Hill House was the monster she unleashed on them. And Hill House is neither good nor evil. It's a force of nature.
I like the theories of mould sickness and the house isnt evil. I saw that as poppy hill manipulating events in favor of the house but not the house itself. It just feeds but hugh was able to show steve the last night through a "virtual reality" flashback, whos to say poppy didnt do the same to Olivia to keep the house fed by bluring the line of reality and dream
These are interesting theories. I think some of them hold more weight than others (the siblings representing stages of grief for example is quite compelling). Overall the show is an allegory for healing in the face of grief and pain. I think some of these theories miss this point entirely, but it is interesting to see what fans have theorized in order to find a more complete understanding of Hill House.
I just love to believe that the ending has so much more to it than just being a melodramatic one. I didn't like the cheesy part much (although I don't consider it completely bad at all), its quite good. But I did notice some of these hints and seeing theories like this makes me believe that the ending wasn't exactly happy. There's just too many hints that say otherwise, its kind of a genius move. I would say a bittersweet ending with at least the remaining crains not experiencing the hauntings but there's the ghostly presence still. Poor Luke deserves some happiness, man. In my mind, I made a ending that has bent neck nell realizing that her father has been trapped as well, witnessing it helplessly and the haunting might not be over.
The second body theory is nonsense. The first body is Olivia. The second body is the dude walled off in the basement. Loved the show but these theories were super shallow.
Another crazy theory. The kids all received a premonition type gift from the mom all very specific about what they would identify with, Nell received gifts from both mom and dad which were things that both could be hung around her neck, the necklace and the watch (maybe counting down to her final demise?) Theo received the gloves (maybe so she wouldn’t keep discovering the houses secrets), Luke got the big boy hat( I am not sure the symbolism behind this one except maybe he’s the boy that never grew up), and Shirley received the casket for the cats pointing towards her becoming a mortician. The only one that did not receive a gift was Steven which makes you wonder what her gift to him was? 🧐
The theory that the mold is "just mold" doesn't really make sense, because the characters see the same ghosts. Both Steve and Luke saw the tall ghost with the cane and hat. This doesn't make a lot of sense if it's random hallucinations.

At the end when steve leaves, the ghosts are there and not doing anything because he is the owner of the house, did hugh ever have ghosts do anything bad to him? No. Was he the owner of the house? Yes.
About Luke never leaving the house, the cake has a two on it for the two years that he has been sober. But I was thinking, what if it's for the two twins and, if it's true about the mom wanting everyone dead, maybe the cake is a celebration for that.
what if olivia tried to kill young luke and young nell so they can be forever young. remember when olivia wanted them to stay young so bad, she was always saying that she wanted to froze them intime. well maybe she knew that if she killed them, their ghost would run around the house like abigail did.
I'm almost certain the 2nd body was, in fact, the body behind the wall (that body was Mr. Hill, btw). I think the police officer was just trying to say anything to get Hugh to confess because that's what police do when they're trying to extract confessions: say whatever to shake up the suspect and get them to say anything to incriminate themselves. I think what he was trying to say was that finding another body on his property would look bad for him so he won't even mention that if he'll just talk to him about what happened.
There are only six plates for cake. Someone might not like cake / maybe another reason not to have some.... but there's seven characters and six plates.

Yeah, Luke's monster in the whole show is addiction so that makes sense.
Luke was a drug addict because Nell was on meds. When Nell stopped taking her meds, Luke was able to stay clean; the twin thing.

Am I the only one who thinks this show is one giant metaphor for mental health? Like there’s so many things that might not make sense if you look at it like that but I re-watched the opening credits the other day and the part at the end with the image of the house from above with no roof (the walls moving etc), the house kinda looks like a brain?

What's positive about this series is that you can watch it over and over and over again, and it will never get boring (IMO). Simply because you never know what happened exactly... Even after watching it 10 times..
The show confirmed the stages of grief part.
The house isn’t evil, it just contains the Lasser glass from oculus. In episode 1 @ 37:25, the music builds to a crescendo and the tension peaks as the camera cuts to Nellie dancing in the reflection of a mirror that looks exactly like the Lasser Glass from Oculus. The nature of the Lasser glass is the same as how the house is described. It’s hungry, it feeds on souls, it breaks its victims down psychologically and uses them to kill others. There’s so many other similarities, it can’t be coincidence.
I have a hard time believing that it was about "over parenting" by Olivia. If anything, she seemed aloof, very preoccupied with her career as an architect. Her kids seemed to get lots of space to do their own thing. If that were the point, I would think that she be portrayed as either a tiger mom, helicopter mom, or at least a hyper domestic type constantly baking cookies and such.
Regarding the stages of grief theory, also notice how Luke says he can "never get past stage 4" in rehab, which would make sense if he is stage 4 of grief. I don't know much about rehab centers and the show doesn't make it clear what stage 4 is, but I think completing it has something to do with making amends or acknowledging one's wrong-doings from what was implied. If this is the case, it would definitely connect well with stage 5 being acceptance.

I think the mold is symbolism for the mindset of the people who live there and is the cause of the changing of the way the walls look.
Olivia's actress confirmed the mold is the state of mind of the residents, the larger and darker the mold is, the more fucked up their minds are
This show was beautiful. I always love to predict things happening in shows, but this one never let me do that. Not even once. A true masterpiece and my favorite show ever

The house is evil. One of the writers for the show posts subplots on reddit that they couldn’t fit into the show because of time or money or something. There was one about someone’s dad taking home leftover wood from when the house was being built to add a bedroom onto his own house, and then being haunted in that specific room. The theory that the house isn’t evil doesn’t make sense with Count_to_seven’s subplot post.

Technicly if you think about it, Olivia did kill her daughter Nelly. When she gave her that rope and pushed her to "wake up" it was really Olivia and not some ghost possesing her. She was just brainwashed and wanted her to come with her and "wake up"

Ya me too. But in that show the ghosts were siverely inhumane. Like there was more evil in that show than emotion. Hill house is different in a way that its more dramatic and deals with issue like depression, substance abuse and family bonds.

I really liked the mold idea. I actually read ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ short story for my literature class last year and always thought the wallpaper had lead or arsenic in it or was covering up mold which made the wife crazy in the end. I’m fascinated with real explanations to supernatural stuff. There’s a theory that carbon monoxide can make people hallucinate ghosts and alien abductions. But I’m also super fascinated with the supernatural aspects too.
You would probably really like Fall of the House of Usher a short story by Edgar Allen Poe that shows the correlation between bad deeds and physical decay
This show was definitely one i’ll never stop thinking about. I was absolutely flabbergasted when I finished watching it for the first time. The way it was put together and how everything links is honestly mind blowing. Although it’ll never hit as hard as the first time you watch it I love that you still notice so many Easter eggs, hidden ghosts and other hidden links between the episodes when you go back to watch it again!!
I took Olivia's dead eye stare to mean that she is accepting this arrangement but will not be happy until all of her kids are dead and what she would consider "safe" with her. So I guess when insane people die, they're still insane.
I like the stages of grief theory! Makes sense more so then the others. With the black mold being being poisonous, as it is, I noticed whenever they showed everyone wearing masks downstairs Olivia never wore one, she may have held one to her face for a second but she always took it off right away. I think that could mean a lot.

It is also about different shapes of fear, fear of parenting, fear of growing up, from direct to more complex types of fear. It is about the effects of fear in different stages of existence. About what fear is exactly and the different types of perspective suited for exploring it.

I love in season 2 they explore more about the ghosts that haunt in there as well as explain why it is haunted and such, also include like a demon that lurks somewhere in the house as well as the mysterious dog that had been heard and mentioned
In the end it showed so many and there were so many hidden throughout the season in the background so the house has a fair number of ghosts. Not to mention the dogs they kids would hear each night and the dog-wolf creature, though that might be the same as the dogs

when i first watched this show, it exceeded my expectations and amazed me. i loved every minute of it. i can’t really explain how much i truly loved it.

So I do have one explanation for how the ending had to be real. The House is shown to be able to bring people back to different points in their life that may have happened somewhere else but this ability seems largely based on the person’s memories. It doesn’t seem to have the ability to create illusions of people in the moment. Only to bring back spirits of people who have actually died in the house. Assuming this is true, the fact that Theo’s girlfriend is in the cake shot would confirm that it’s actually happening because she’s never been to the house.
Hill house reminded me a lot of season 1 of American Horror Story (still the best AHS season!) That's also about a house in which the inhabitants and everyone who dies there remain there as spirits/ghosts, but in a very physical form

The theory about the police officer finding future Hugh’s body while finding Olivia’s could be possible. It happened in Insidious. Younger Josh seen his future self along with him seeing Elise and Carl ( I think Carl ).
Can I just say that episode 5 is one of the best mind-bending entertainments that we’ve all seen........
When I first started watching this show, I thought that the ghosts were just the statues coming to life because they sort of looked like the statues, a little bit and also the intro and the emphasis based on the statues at the beginning. Now I feel like the mold is the best theory!

If the house isn't alive how does it keep the door to the redroom closed? And how does it keep the redroom changing for whoever is inside of it? How does the house stop the fire that Luke tries to start? ...No, the house is definitely alive.

I really want to re-watch this show now. The two mold theories are really interesting. There's the bit where Steve unplugs the fan, his dad gets his hand sliced, and they look over to see its still plugged in, but that could simply have been the mold affecting Steve's memory, and his dad bumping the switch or doing something so it turns back on.
Maybe season 2 can be a prequel story about how all the Hills died
Loved this show! NETFLIX another smash original series!! I hope there are more seasons. Loved the entire cast, both kids and adult versions alike! I don’t see how they can continue with the same cast especially the kids! But I’d love it if they can. Or they could do the house and it’s 100 year history. The Hill Family themselves! And how it all started. With time life confetti, Olivia, Hugh & Nelly could them be ghosts in the background.
The second body is definitely the one behind the walls. Just because it's decayed doesn't mean that it's not a body. Not sure why that gets dismissed so easily.

Dina M there's nothing to suggest that the other body they were referring to was one from that night specifically. If I found a body in the house a week or even a month before then I would also be worried they could think "hey, what if this guy had something to do with this one too" - it was also the same cop as well so he would know exactly the body he was talking about

I have to agree with the mold theory. You could have had the last episode reveal that the ghosts were never really there, and it still would have worked. It would have been one of those "Are you f*cking KIDDING me?!" moments, but still feasible.
Great show , it emphasized more to me in life that, Family , your Blood is so important. Also Luke and Nell are so cute when portraying them young.
The true antagonist of the show was never Hill House, it's Olivia Crain. Hill House was the monster she unleashed on them. And Hill House is neither good nor evil. It's a force of nature.
I like the theories of mould sickness and the house isnt evil. I saw that as poppy hill manipulating events in favor of the house but not the house itself. It just feeds but hugh was able to show steve the last night through a "virtual reality" flashback, whos to say poppy didnt do the same to Olivia to keep the house fed by bluring the line of reality and dream

These are interesting theories. I think some of them hold more weight than others (the siblings representing stages of grief for example is quite compelling). Overall the show is an allegory for healing in the face of grief and pain. I think some of these theories miss this point entirely, but it is interesting to see what fans have theorized in order to find a more complete understanding of Hill House.
I just love to believe that the ending has so much more to it than just being a melodramatic one. I didn't like the cheesy part much (although I don't consider it completely bad at all), its quite good. But I did notice some of these hints and seeing theories like this makes me believe that the ending wasn't exactly happy. There's just too many hints that say otherwise, its kind of a genius move. I would say a bittersweet ending with at least the remaining crains not experiencing the hauntings but there's the ghostly presence still. Poor Luke deserves some happiness, man.
In my mind, I made a ending that has bent neck nell realizing that her father has been trapped as well, witnessing it helplessly and the haunting might not be over.

The second body theory is nonsense. The first body is Olivia. The second body is the dude walled off in the basement. Loved the show but these theories were super shallow.
Another crazy theory. The kids all received a premonition type gift from the mom all very specific about what they would identify with, Nell received gifts from both mom and dad which were things that both could be hung around her neck, the necklace and the watch (maybe counting down to her final demise?) Theo received the gloves (maybe so she wouldn’t keep discovering the houses secrets), Luke got the big boy hat( I am not sure the symbolism behind this one except maybe he’s the boy that never grew up), and Shirley received the casket for the cats pointing towards her becoming a mortician. The only one that did not receive a gift was Steven which makes you wonder what her gift to him was? 🧐
I thought of Luke's gift when it was posited he never left... Maybe that's why he sees the tall guy looking for his hat, it's him.

The theory that the mold is "just mold" doesn't really make sense, because the characters see the same ghosts. Both Steve and Luke saw the tall ghost with the cane and hat. This doesn't make a lot of sense if it's random hallucinations.
And they even say "big boys can tell what's real"

I just watched this show for the first time. I kept putting it off bc I thought it was gonna be like that awful movie with Catherine Zeta Jones, but omg this show is amazing! I watched it alone in my room and nearly crapped myself it was soo scary! Love these theories!
They've confirmed that the second season won't be about Shirley's "Haunting of Hill House", instead, it will be about Henry James' "The Turn of the Screw", a story about a governess who moves to an old victorian mansion to take care of two siblings with a very disturbing past.

About Luke never leaving the house, the cake has a two on it for the two years that he has been sober. But I was thinking, what if it's for the two twins and, if it's true about the mom wanting everyone dead, maybe the cake is a celebration for that.

I'm almost certain the 2nd body was, in fact, the body behind the wall (that body was Mr. Hill, btw). I think the police officer was just trying to say anything to get Hugh to confess because that's what police do when they're trying to extract confessions: say whatever to shake up the suspect and get them to say anything to incriminate themselves. I think what he was trying to say was that finding another body on his property would look bad for him so he won't even mention that if he'll just talk to him about what happened.
There are only six plates for cake. Someone might not like cake / maybe another reason not to have some.... but there's seven characters and six plates.
