    I would send the Palmer to SGC...they are much more forgiving on the min-size cards. It is not a 100% guarantee but I say 80% of the cards PSA rejected were graded by SGC. I measure my vintage before sending to PSA but they are SUPER strict.

    PSA has gotten wayyyyy too strict with Michael Jordan cards, and I just dont think its fair that the card doesnt get the grade it deserves because its MJ. That 3rd year MJ is not a 6, no way that is a 6(PSA is out of their minds grading MJ cards way too strict)

    The excessive fees from psa are more than the extra amount you would get by having it psa vs sgc for a lot of these. SGC sells for a close enough price that its not worth spending double to grade with psa on lower priced cards like these. Plus the sgc would look way better.

  • @artistbrindle

    I know that grades vary, but I feel like it’s giving PSA a pass by saying that weird, inconsistent grades with no explanation “happens”. Because it’s happening a lot and they’re not doing the grading for free. There should be accountability.

    • @gabriels1163
      @gabriels1163 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, even the smaller companies that most people have not heard of are super consistent with their grades. Psa grades are all over the place. The main reason being that they have too many graders, hundreds of them. And while some are professionals that have been doing it as a career, many are college kids doing it as a part time job. Some are well trained, some are not. You never know who will see your cards. Could get someone good, could get someone who just randomly guesses. Plus they use a computer program that artificially changes grades in order to keep population percentages where they want them on popular cards (like 89 upper deck griffey).

    Great video - sometimes eye appeal has to trump card grade and value. On vintage I agree centering is key. I would take the Brett RC in a 5 with better centering but corner and edge wear as opposed to your off-centered 7 with sharper corners and edges (No offense). $$$$$ -Great video bro!! The cards to pick up right now are Absolute Glass. On Ebay there are only around 400 total available for sale. That's accounting for all (3) sports across all years. Guys like Kobe, Brady, Lebron, Curry are going to go to the MOON!. Also look for key rookies like Tatum, Lamelo Ball, Anthony Edwards etc. At any given time someone can find like 10,000 refractors of ANY given player, but they'd be hard pressed to find a half dozen glass cards of the same player $$$$$

    I have gotten back 6 mini size errors from PSA on the last couple submissions. A couple cards went straight from the pack to the holder to PSA. Do you think in their hurry to get things out the door in a reasonable turnaround they are making more mistakes like this? Or is it just quality control on the card companies?

      I think to pay employees enough to have employees, plus overhead, plus make enough to justify staying in business they have to fully process a card every 5 minutes or less at current prices. Thats open. inspect, slab, package for return ship with 1 person slabbing per 5 or so graders. It must be an assembly line there now. So yes its luck of the draw what min wage employee looks at it and what they feel like saying that day.

    It's sort of funny I've been grading with psa for 15 years and it's still the same story most stuff it's a break even situation. However there is often a card or two in which you get lucky and it provides all of the profit. I just had some grades drop on a bunch of vintage movie star cards I submitted. Generally the grades were pretty tough, but I had two cards where I got lucky to receive what I would consider two grades above expected both of which are "rookies" and the highest graded copies so I should do well because of those two cards.

    Yeah I can't submit with psa, too expensive. Their grades don't always add up either. Waiting for CSG or SGC to lower their bulk rate to a reasonable $10. Doesn't make sense for the cards I got. Another great video as always Chris!

    • @SgtJoeSmith
      @SgtJoeSmith ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The slabs are like $5 but they may get them cheaper for buying thousands at a time. To charge $10 a card (and I may be wrong but I looked into this for my card store) they would have to open, grade, slab a card every 3 minutes per grader. But if they can get slabs for $1 then they can average 5 min a card a person. Just guessing. I'd like to go watch for an hour though.

      @@SgtJoeSmith prepandemic PSA was at $8 for bulk along with other companies.. So it's absolutely possible but after tasting the extra profits from increases they have no reason to go back. I'd really like SGC to bring it down to atleast $15 bc I think it'd help bring in more subs while possibly help them take more market share. Most importantly though I hope collectors & hobby adjust to give SGC & CSG more resale value bc I personally think they are equals if not better in certain aspects of the grading industry.

    • @tombullard6167
      @tombullard6167 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@SgtJoeSmith also believe PSA said they on average take 1min to grade each card. I may be wrong myself but pretty sure thats what I remember hearing. Obviously some take longer or some shorter but seems like that isn't az much an issue. Also I think if they could come up with more a assembly line style grading system where cards are sent to surface grade then corners then edges then centering it'd make it easier for graders to focus on their expertise but I'm sure that's been thought of in industry & isn't feasible possibly. I understand less handling & movement of cards the better usually but if in semiridis or some special holder to be graded from would minimize it. Anyways sorry for ranting, always all kinds of ideas for the hobby but no resources or know how to try & implement or get it out there. Hobby Think Tank lets start it lol

    Chris - insurance question. When sending cards to PSA, do you insure for the raw value, your expected graded value, or something in between? For example, if you were sending 10 of the same card, each with a raw value of $50, but graded values of $90 for an “8” and $300 for a “9” (and you expecting to receive an “8” or “9”), how much insurance do you purchase? Thanks.

    • @SgtJoeSmith
      @SgtJoeSmith ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm not Chris but good question. 1st, the value is arbitrary and depends if you can find someone to pay that. 2nd, technically until they are graded and get those grades they are worth raw value. Insurance companies pay what something is worth at the time of loss not what it might be worth in the future. (get an old 60 Mustang from junk yard for $500 and take home to restore and sell at Mecum but garage burns down before you start, Insurance will pay what you paid not what you could've sold it for at auction restored) But at same time when it comes to mail insurance you decide the value and then pay your 1 time premium based on that. But say you list it as valued at its graded value and pay based on that and its lost going to PSA, not coming back. I don't know if insurance company would but they might, only pay raw value despite you paying the higher premium. This may be a question to ask the Post Office. If you declare X value and pay the rate for that value are you guaranteed that value if lost or is there a possibility they will claim item lost is worth less and pay less? Of course if they do pay less I guess you can sue but that's $2k probably and chance of only getting your $5 insurance fee refunded. Sorry this wasn't a short simple answer.

    • @collectorinvestordealer
      @collectorinvestordealer  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I insure for what I think the graded value will be. But as Sgt Joe Smith stated, its very arbitrary and not something to be really concerned about. Just make a very loose reasonable guess and you will be fine.

      I admire and respect Chris and his thoughts and opinions and by all means am not trying to say hes wrong or disrespect him here. Just 1 thing to point out is profit is based on that card being sold for last or average sale price. That price I have seen range from $5 a card to $100 a card. After you send it for grading that player may be the MVP of super bowl or something and everyone wants it and card comes back as 10 and you can sell for $5k more than you thought originally and make a bigger profit, But also after you send it off the player could drive drunk at 130mph in Vegas and kill someone and now everyone throws that players cards in the trash. True, overall you will get more from graded cards that come back 8 or higher usually vs raw. Lower grades you may break even. With sometimes months delay on grading returns, its almost like playing the stock market. I am not trying to undermine Chris or stop you from grading. Just do your research cause your results may vary for better or for worse.

    PSA is terrible on vintage

    PSA doesn't even always follow their own grading criteria you're at the mercy of whoever is, looking over the cards. They could be having a bad day or hold certain biases and grudges against certain players and you would never know or be able to prove it.

      I do strictly vintage stuff and I'm wondering how many of their graders just don't know vintage, because surface concerns between modern/ultramodern and vintage are very different...
