Times sure were tough back in the battle to rescue the former president. The roasts were so dry and the hamburgers never came with curly fries. Thanks for the trip down memory lane with a fun game.
@@richardhurr31this port also included the original mode along with the arcade mode which had more levels and the player could switch characters with special weapons. Great Genesis game.
"Wolf of the Battlefield - MERCS" (c) CAPCOM 1990. REPROGRAMMED GAME (c) SEGA. That means that SEGA did the porting of this game, despite Capcom being credited with the publishing of the original arcade version. I guess it was a common practice for SEGA to port games made by other companies, since the SG-1000 and Master System days.
At that time Nintendo still had their icy grip monopoly on 3rd party companies, so in order for Sega to get other companies games on their console, they had to reprogram the games themselves. Later on, after Nintendo had to let go of that icy grip, then Capcom and Konami started making games for the console.
Used to have this game before we lost every single Mega Drive game somehow (I think they were stolen by my brother's flatmates or something) I really want it back now that I watch this video. =(
Wes Draughn It's cool; I've got Mercs again now. :D I bought it for a tenner at a retro gaming conference (fully boxed and all); also got Desert Strike in perfect condition for £4.00, and Sonic the Hedgehog for £1.00
The arcade version stomps this port. The poor color, shitty sound effects, and lack of 2-player really hold this game back. And why is there a huge HUD taking up massive real estate on the side of the screen?
@Ben Owen1 Yeah a CPS1 one beeing better than a MegaDrive? Talk about something we don't know already... But the MD port stomps on your beloved Arcade version by having very good music and a totally new mode exclusive to this.
Whenever an arcade game is ported to a system with less capabilities, certain sacrifices have to be made. The HUD was moved to the far right to preserve the original aspect ratio as much as they could, because the original arcade game had a vertically-oriented monitor. (“Truxton” and “Raiden Trad”, among others, had to do the same thing.) Later on, some arcade ports which had vertical monitors (such as Ikaruga) offered an option to turn the image sideways to utilize the full television screen, and the player would turn their TV set on its side. This is called TATE mode (pronounced ‘tah-TAY’).
My god just seeing this floods me with earlier life memories. Damn, life was simpler and fun had so many genesis games it was unbelievable.
OMG. That soundtrack and effects. Brings back so much memories
My most favourite game ever. I still have this game today. I haven't got the console but still have the game lol
You can buy a cheap mega retron HD its great
Thank you I'll take a look in to it

13:15 one of the most epic starts to a boss fight ever
Watching this in 2020! So much nostalgia :)
Back in the day when you could complete a game in 20 minutes and there were no loading times.
Yeh and some games were equivalent of what games cost now adjust for inflation so we certainly did not get money's worth
@greglinski2208 3 years actually and yeah... Lol

The guy is a freak. He totally storms every level. LOL
Damn this game was darn fun back in the day!
I loved this game as a kid ❤
Good memories, I played it a thousand times. I was just a child.
Love it! ❤️
I just noticed something about the first level.... how steep is that slope? We went from sea level to mountain tops after 10 seconds of running
It is over 9000 degrees!!!!
Uberdanger
Playing these old games is more enjoyable than the current ones.
This game is fucking AWESOME.
You should play original mode! It's on the megadrive version only, and it was even better than arcade, with several characters to improve!
So many MD games at £40 a pop and it didn’t take long to complete a lot of them. Back then, didn’t realise as a kid.
It's amazing how many resources the enemy has in this game. lol
Easily my fav Genesis game. Clears Super C on SNES as well, at least for me personally. And that OST kicks all our asses.
Way much better than the master system version
the music sounds like the arcades
That's because they use similar soundchips
I used to play genesis games a long time ago. I played always Nes game. That's why Arcade (M.a.m.e.) came to mind about genesis graphics.
Classic Game, Classic Soundtrack!
Good shooting game very underrated game
this was unbeliveable!
Used to rent this game at phar mor in Wilkes Barre Pennsylvania all the time. I would have bought it if I ever saw it at funcoland.
very well played

pretty decent port
Aside from the terrible slowdown which seems most prominent in the water level it's pretty solid overall.
It’s damn good for a Genesis port.
Just found this cartridge tidying up and came here to see if it’s what I thought it was….yup!
Kickass, mang. Hope to see an Original longplay of this game.
Valis77 knew how to play this game so well, that he ended up putting Rambo to shame.
This is like Ikari Warriors vs. Contra!
I second that... There's something annoying about a guy who makes nailing a game look so easy, and you remember the struggles you had... grr
i played this a lot when i was kid
This game is same as Bloody Wolf that was on Turbo grx and Both these games have Same Task Force Logos (Wolf) .
Hoy en el 2023 me lo he pasado en el modo arcade, desde niño que lo jugaba😄
I don't recall the year 19XX. What happened that year? Such a blur.
The arcade machine is 3 player coop. The Master System I get it....but how on earth is the Megadrive version also 1 player only?!
Guau! Cuantos buenos recuerdos!
@cubex55 maybe both modes?
I spent years finding the name of this game.
Get to the choppahhh!
They just don't make them like this anymore!! A pure if tough white knuckle ride to hell and back!!!
Diferent Version. Not Have 2 Players Mode And Have A Timer.
The Arcade Version Not Have A Timer.
Arnold Schwarzenegger In Mercs
And this time he saving the president of United states of America
Bring on the spreadgun
😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁

I actually have a good two dozen games, including this one plus a working system, if you're interested.
Wes Draughn It's cool; I've got Mercs again now. :D I bought it for a tenner at a retro gaming conference (fully boxed and all); also got Desert Strike in perfect condition for £4.00, and Sonic the Hedgehog for £1.00
The latter was one of the first games I ever played, save for "Captain America and the Avengers"... still got it, though.
I've found it!!!
Is this the closest thing on Genesis to Metal Slug?
go to gunstar heroes or contra hard corps if you want something like metal slug in genesis.
Or even better, Midnight Resistance.
WTF? Hell no! There is Gunstar Heroes and Contra Hard Corps!
is this two player?
No, single player only.
Impressionant!!!!
@cubex55 I really don't care, just guessing what he meant lol. That's all I can think of.
Try playing this on the Retro Bit Generations! LMAO.
This reminds me of Rambo 3
This guy is good...but could he take on Clark and Ralf? I think not!
Arcade version is better!!!
Great Game!!
Magnifique ! A la G.I.Joe !
reminds me of contra
reminds me Rambo 3...

Decent port, should have been better.
For beeing a really early tittle, they managed to get pretty good results, especially considering they created a whole new game on the Original Mode
@@averageradiantreplays7702
True that!
That may be crazy but I wanna know how mercs will be on the snes.
Two player would've been amazing
Contra :D
no chopper at the beginning awful!
