  • I came out to film a vlog about Buzzards on a deer carcass but it went AWOL!! Whilst there I spotted a trio of adult Roe deer including a Buck with his antlers in velvet. in this short film I explain the reasons for selling the Z6ii and the issues with the autofocus system. I also demonstrate my techniques for moving across open ground utilising the eardley Creations beanbag that are available on my Etsy store.

    Crikey and it was only the last video that you was saying how much you liked the camera, oh well no good having it if it doesn’t work for you. Great shots and good advice on the deer. I spent a lot of time in the New Forest during rutting season over the last few years photographing the reds and fallows and have used your technique of moving when they graze but not when they look up to very good effect. Cheers for the video.

    the issue you describe is not a z6 issue i believe it is a mirrorless issue, i have an R6 and that does the same, Duade Paton was the first youtuber i saw highlight the issue when using the R6 or R5 as there was no mention in any reviews. Apart from as you done pointing at something closer the other tweek was using the manual focus to bring it back the auto.

    Excellent video always great to see how other wildlife photographers get their images. I am still very much in the Dslr camp the only thing I like about the mirrorless is the silent shutter but while I am getting good shots I see no reason to change.

    • @simoneardley
      @simoneardley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know what you mean Craig, the silent shutter is awesome. One of my main reasons was for the video capability for TH-cam really. Nothing wrong with a good DSLR, more than capable.

  • @Gazzab6
    @Gazzab6 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I agree with every single word you said about the mirrorless issues that haunts the Z6ii / Z7ii. I’ve had various discussions with people who have told me I’d be better off with a Z6ii than my D500 but you hit the mail on the head - it’s about what suits your type of photography and mine is very similar to yours except for the need to do video. The issues your described with the AF seems to be a common issue with mirrorless cameras although I thought the recent firmware update had redressed some of those issues on the Z6ii but I’m starting to hear that it has not. I’m with you Simon, at the end of the day, a missed opportunity due to inconsistent AF is a missed shot. The only Nikon camera I would have to replace my D500 is the Z9.

    • @simoneardley

    I am an Olympus/OMD-S fan. Prior to moving back to Olympus I owned a Sony A9 and Sony A7R4 + 100 - 400mm and 200 - 600mm. The weight + tripod was aggravating a back injury, so I purchased an Olympus EM1X and EM1.3. Just over a fortnight ago, I swapped them for two OM1 bodies. Wow! What a brilliant wildlife camera. It snatches birds in flight out of the sky with up to 50 fps. I tried out the 50 fps with CAF + TR + bird recognition a few days ago and haven't changed back to a lower fps - it's that good, but you do need to exercise a bit of shutter control. I used to own a D500 + 200 - 500mm + TC 14, it's a good set up.

    Hi Simon better late than never just recovering from the dreaded covid. Great vid as usual sorry to hear about the Z6II. I replaced my D500 with it and cant say I have had to many issues with it its certainly not the greatest AF you can get but when I paired it to a hired 500pf I got the best shots Ive taken all be it motorbikes at Siverstone. I used to struggle sometimes with my 200-500mm on my D500 for birds in flight and used to think it was the lens but maybe it was me. Morten Hilmer used the Z6 for most of his latest work until the Z9 came along, but hey mate if it doesn't work for you then fair enough. Anyhow hope you find your holy grail what ever it is soon mate, but don't may too much attention to the Nikon bashers. Stay safe. 👍

      @@simoneardley These mid-range and low-end cameras, with very little prudent prices, some of them, above 3,000 euros, work with 7.2 V and 1,800 milliampere batteries, while a Canon 1DX is equipped with a Lithium-Ion battery of 11.1V and 2,450mAh.
      Canon Eos 7D - Battery LP-E6: 7.2 V and 1,800 mAh.
      Canon Eos 1DX - Battery LP-E4: 11.1 V and 2,450 mAh.
      Nikon D800 - EN-EL15 battery: 7.0 V and 1,900 mAh.
      Nikon D4 - Battery EN-EL18: 10.8 V and 2,000 mAh.
      This is the difference that now I get 95% sharp photos in very risky photos of small birds flying very close to the camera, for example, whereas before I only took 5%, being lucky.
      There are many thousands of photographers around the world who use these telephoto lens equipment with medium and low-end cameras that do not obtain the expected results, millions of images that are erased due to lack of expected sharpness.
      The batteries in these cameras are not capable of precisely driving the large, powerful motor in one of these telephoto lenses, which moves very heavy groups of lenses. These motors require higher capacity from the battery that drives them to do accurate focus follow. The gear is fun but I guarantee that if you don’t have technique for wildlife you are going to fail every outing - even with the best gear. You already have the hard bit sorted. Lol I was shooting a 4x5 camera at a lake early in the morning. It took me about 30 minute to compose the shot and focus everything the way I wanted so I just had to wait for the light to be perfect and I was golden . Right as the light was dusting the mountain peaks surrounding the lake this elderly lady comes walking down and sets up her chair, her lunch cooler, and her fishing poles right in the shot. She was super nice though so I didn’t have the heart to tell her she was blowing my shot. I almost let her have it when she asked what I was taking pictures of though 😂. It never ceases to amaze me how oblivious people are to their surroundings.

    Hello so different are the demands on the camera. Since I've had my Z6 and my Z6 II, my D500 often stays at home. Why, because I enjoy the picture quality and just the full format more. Morning Simon great Video I was in the same boat as you both ways sold my Z6 just not up to it much prefer my D500 and I was photographing 5 Roe deer one morning last week ( can`t get down and scramble like you the old back wont stand it ) trouble with my deer was it seemed one was always on the look out when the others popped their heads up the "look out " seemed to swap and he started grazing while another looked out (bloody hell I`ve written a lot of look outs 😊) are you happy with the 500pf ? I`m thinking of diving in on one for the prime quality ? & the weight love to hear your thoughts

      Aye they're a twitchy subject for sure, can totally recommend the 500pf. Great image age quality with the size and weight advantages.

    The carcass was probably moved by the landowners or gillie as it attracts birds of prey if there are game birds about. Great pics there.

    totally agree with the AF issues on the Z6ii, I had the original version and sold it for the same reason , continued with the old faithful D500 until last year when I bought a sony A9ii and 200-600 then added and Olympus kit with 300 F4 pro a month ago as a walkabout kit - no comparison, both sensational at AF, tbh I do miss the Nikon colour science and sensor quality though

      Yeh its a real downfall on the camera unfortunately , decided to pre order the Z9. We'll see how that fares!!

      its mirrorless in general. Autofocus is different and struggles with fast objects and also useless for studio flash photography.

    • @simoneardley
      @simoneardley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Frustrating aint it Andrew🤔😩 You'd think Nikon would be able to address it.

    Having seen some of the vlogs by people getting the new mirrorless, my thoughts are the price are out of the reach for most people and are the quality of pics that much better? They may instantly focus on the eye, but you still need the field craft and knowledge to find the subjects. Technology will take the skill from photography. Soon be a matter of clicking a button.

    • @simoneardley
      @simoneardley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get what youre saying but technology will never compensate for bad fieldcraft.

    Hey Simon, sorry to hear about you deciding to sell the Z6ll. I have it as well and I find there is a focal distance difference as well with the 500mm PF on the Z6ll and the D500. I can get closer focus with the D500 than on the Z6ll. I do love the Z6ll for the video. So you are back to the D500 for both stills and video I take it. Sell lots of bean bags and grab the 9. Who knows you might get fed up with Nikon and go Sony or another brand. It sure seems a lot of people are..... Greg

    • @Gazzab6
      @Gazzab6 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not for total wildlife. The D500 is the better camera just for wildlife.

    • @simoneardley
      @simoneardley  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I need a great video capability as well which the D850 doesn't do that well compared to the mirrorless.

  • @snap-n-shoot
    @snap-n-shoot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    more pro wildlife photographers are ditching mirrorless and going back to dslr. Camera makers have said dslr sales are up and mirrorless are going down. Ruggedness and stability is the main reason. But also mirrorless autofocus is different and not good for fast wildlife.
