I've just replaced my brew stat watching this video, really clear and great set of instructions 👍
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the comment!
Thanks so much for another great tutorial. Whole Latte is the best!!
You are so welcome!
Nice job on thorough explanation of brew stat replacement - it's much harder than the steam one but, as you show, doable.
Hi Mark, Thanks for the comment!
Many, many thanks for this. (My machine had been out of action for many months but, following this video, I had my first brew today.)

Hi BV, That's awesome! Happy to help from across the pond :) Thanks for taking a moment to leave your comment.
Cheers
Does it matter which wire goes to which side of the terminal?
no
I feel quite sure my steam stat is bad, should I also do the brew one? Thanks!
Hey tcp, No expectation the brew will fail but might as well if you're in there.
Hello, thank you for the help on my previous question. I replaced the thermostats and it was working really well but I have a new problem; when I turn the machine on, the brew light comes on immediately, when I pull a shot it comes out super fast. Same coffee, same grind. I tried adjusting the grind but it hasn't made a difference. It's as if the machine was too powerful. My pressure is reading as 16 bars.
Is there a brand of thermal paste that you recommend for the tstat install?
Our techs like this: www.super-lube.com/silicone-heat-sink-compound-98003
Can you reverse the polarity on the thermostat wires? ie will it mess up if you switch the thermostat's wires?
Hi MM, Honestly not sure as something we have not tried.
Thank you so much for your video! I was able to confidently repair the 'thermal fuse' and both the 'brewing' and 'steaming' thermostats on my own; very satisfying. So glad the repair guy I called was inefficient and didn't called me back. I am really starting to get to know my 'Gaggia Classic' from the inside -out!
I have noticed that many 'Gaggia Classic' owners have adjusted the pressure valve from 12 bars to 9 bars and also adapted the machine to include a PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) - For those not familiar -a device used to keep the water inside the boiler at a much more stable and optimial temperature for brewing or steaming. What are your thoughts?
P.S. My machine is an older model 06/2005 (Q96162).
Hi c, nearly 20 years old! Easy repairability and longevity are one reason why I recommend Gaggia Classics. For thos reading with newer Gaggia Classic Evo Pros know that all those shipping in North America already have a 9 bar OPV installed.
Any difference in these instructions with the Gaggia Classic Pro?
Hi tw, No, it's essentially the same.
If the machine overheats when in brew mode, and works fine in steam mode, would it then be the brew thermostat that's broken?
Hi Daniel, That's a good place to start.
im having this same issue, thinking ill replace the brew thermostat, did this fix your problem mate?
Thanks for the video, it was really helpful.
What is the white thermal compound called? Thanks!
Hi Louis, Heat Transfer Compound, often referred to as heat transfer mastic, is a compound used to enhance the thermal performance of bolt-on heating products. ... Heat transfer compound consists of graphite and one or more binder components which are formulated for different applications.
@@Wholelattelovepage gotcha, so similar to thermal paste for a cpu
Is it important to replace this compound when putting in a new thermostat?
What are the tell-tell signs that either thermostat is not working properly and needs replacement?
My gaggia classic gets really hot when turned on (almost too hot to touch), which didn't use to be the case.
Hi t, well that might be a sign. If getting that hot I'm surprised the thermal fuse on top of the boiler didn't go.
@@Wholelattelovepage thank you
Thanks for the great videos. My steam is working well but the brew is coming out cold. It does come out hotter if I brew after I steam. Is this a problem with the brew thermostat or could it be a problem with the boiler?
Hi wb, It may be a thermostat. Best bet is to give our tech support a call at 585-924-7170 for a better diagnosis.
i have the same problem, do you know what is the problem , is the thermostat?
@@starkdc5535 It worked for me.
Thank you so much. Great video. I repaired mine
You're welcome!
How are you my friend? I have a problem with the GAGGIA machine. How can I send you videos????
Hi s, if in US or Canada you can contact our tech support here: www.wholelattelove.com/pages/contact-us
How do you know if the steam stat needs replacing? My machine is struggling to produce more than 4-5 seconds of steam, but I'm still trying to diagnose the problem.
should I go for the 107ºC or the 100ºC boiler thermostat? Thanks.
Well explained
Great video: super clear and complete.
Hi JC, Awesome! Thanks for the comment.
Do you sell the wiring harness? My steam thermostat broke and/or burnt out and the plastic housing on the wiring connection melted.
Hi Laura, It should be available. Best bet is to call our Tech Support at 585-924-7170. They can help you get the right parts!

It may be the configuration of your Gaggia, but I keep wondering why you are not attaching the earthing wire that is attached to the lid (I have now seen a couple of your Gaggia Classic videos)... maybe this is only the case with the 240V?
Additional question, the thermal paste, is that the same stuff use on PC's for processor heat sinks? (just to be safe, I can add a dab when / if I get the switches for replacement)
Other than that, very nice and clear videos! Definitely thank you!
Hi n, You are welcome and thank you for the comment and question. I cannot speak to the 240V Classics. It may be a regulation for dedicated ground for that component in machines sold outside North America. I would think the PC thermal paste would work so long as it's rated to handle the temperature which can reach up to about 265F/130C.

My steam thermostat is broken. But my steaming function is great without it! I know it's risky... But how about I install instead of the original one, another with higher temp switch? Like 175 c (saeco part)??? Or how high I could go?
Hi AC, Anything above the original spec is not recommended! Risky because dangerous!!!
@@Wholelattelovepage thanks. I understand that you have to said that.. But, how dangerous? A few degrees more what could do? I'll research my self. Thanks again guys!
The steam t-stat is rated to 250 (C?) but the thermal fuse is rated to 184C, can you pop the fuse if you leave the steam on too long? When I put the steam function on my Classic, after about a 1/2 minute the boiler makes a loud angry boiling sound for 5-7 seconds and is fine from then on. Today I let the machine warm up on brew for 15-20 minutes and then made my coffee and right as I was finishing steaming milk the machine shut off and tonight checked the fuse and it was toast. If a tstat goes bad, can it go bad on the high side and cause that problem with the loud boiling/cavitation sounds I mention?
Hi Andrew, I suggest replacing both thermostats and the fuse. There's more info on troubleshooting the Gaggia Classic including electrical diagrams here: wiki.wholelattelove.com/Gaggia_Classic
The thermostat and fuse did it. Fuse got the power back on and steam t-stat kept the boiler from overheating to the point where it overboiled/superheated the steam and made all that racket. Thanks!!
@@andrewgreif1504 Mine made that noise. It released pressure to the opv when it was ready to vaporize. I removed the opv and cleaned it. I went back and everything went back to normal. No noise now.
hello....how can i check if my temperature on my gaggia is ok?
Hi Panos, Thanks for the question. You will find lots of troubleshooting information in our Gaggia Classic Support Wiki: wiki.wholelattelove.com/Gaggia_Classic
My handle is splashing do you know problem?
Handle splashing? Do you mean leaking around the portafilter? If so probably time to replace the group gasket - one of these: www.wholelattelove.com/products/caffewerks-silicone-group-gasket-73-x-57-x-8mm
Not sure if US machines are different but my pre-2015 Gaggia Classic has different temperature ratings than you state in your video. The steam Thermostat on the pre-2015 model I have is 145°C, not 250°C as described in your video. The brew thermostat meanwhile is rated at 107°C whilst the thermal fuse is rated at 184°C. As another post alludes to the other anomaly is the earth wire which at least on UK models attaches to the lid. Aside of these anomalous issues, a very helpful and instructive video.
Hi tvnw, Thanks for the comment. Yes, there are some differences between EU and North American models. Think the steam thermostat is 250F here not C.
