Actually, in every Indian city, there are restaurants that cater to tourists and some places where the local people go to eat! The second category requires a little research and local guidance! This episode was really surprising because Kerela is a very economical place to eat! These guys went to restaurants which must be catering to foreign tourists!!

4:13 In every restaurant in Kerala, they give boiled water for drinking and it is free. The water is boiled with a herb called "Karingali" in Malayalam language. Another specialty in Kerala is, if you are ordering rice/meals, the rice and vegies are unlimited. You can eat as much you want.

I was born in Ernakulam Kochi and BTH is Bharatha Tourist Home and more than 60 years old .There water is hard hence water is served with jeera and hot .The old world charm is gone .
I am from Cochin (Kochi). There many beautiful places to visit in-and-around Kochi. May be due to lack of time, he has missed them. A proper guided tour might have covered most of them.

LIG , MIG,HIG (Low/Medium/High Income Group) are the terms used here. The restaurant this guy went was MIG type. same food may be available for LIGs as well but with less ambience. cup of coffee in Chennai at roadside stalls is between Rs.12 and Rs.20 , where as in Restaurants it is between Rs.35 and Rs.60 , special outlets such as Coffee house, starbucks it is between Rs.400 and Rs.600. so it is all about affordability and life style of individuals.

Food in Kerala would normally cost higher compared to other states in India due to higher input cost. The per day cost for unskilled labour in Kerala is around ₹900 per day (8 hours for work) with higher rates per day for skilled labour. And in Kerala, people give too much importance to cleanliness and presentation, so those jobs will also have to be taken seriously. Also, farming is not very attractive work in Kerala any more and most farmers are focused mostly on cash crops like cashew, coconut, arecanut, tea, coffee, rubber, etc. Most of the food crops & other items are brought in from other states. So, over all the input cost increases drastically for hotels and restaurants.

Food cost depends on the type of place..road side, small restaurant or 5 stars etc…but I think Calcutta is cheapest. In star hotels, we prefer buffets. Even here in Vizag , a small city, it costs over Rs. 1500/- per person. By the way, that person missed Fort Cochin, a very nice place. Place is like a small European city. I stayed in Ernakulam for over 5 years. There at Fort Cochin, you have a Jewish Synagogue too.
