This is such solid information. The biggest issue for me was getting off of my ego and into the idea of scoring. Last round I put my driver away for most of the round. Kept the ball in play. 88, which for me is really good.

Great content as usual, Matt. I saw the results of a robot test recently, which showed a driver actually hits shorter than a 3-wood for club speeds below 90 mph, even with a perfect strike. My speed is 88 mph, so I gain absolutely nothing from a driver. I hit a 1” shortened 3-wood straight nearly every time, 190-210 yards depending on contact. I don’t carry a driver.

You don’t have to overthink 1000 different elements of swing and stance and shaft angle to start dropping shots. I played my first ever 18 holes yesterday and shot 114 (very bad but better than I expected) and thanks to your advice I was able to recognise where I went wrong with my course management and lost unnecessary shots - off the tee box and on the greens mainly. Nice playa
For you, your main focus must be
Driving the ball IN PLAY - that's all. Doesn't have to be long, doesn't have to be SMASHED just IN PLAY
Then you have to work on getting it on the green when you're around the green and preventeing 3 putts...work on getting the speed right on your putts taking note of the uphill and downhill slope on a green
But most important is the long game for you now, to learn how to hit a golf ball better

first thing i do on the tee is find flat ground to stand on and i put my club down and make sure the area around where i will tee the ball is also somewhat flat. then i step back and find my target and find my line up spot in front of the ball. i usually tee up 1m from the markers and it gives me lots of imperfections to choose from.

Have improved massively in the way of the playa over the last couple of months., dropping driver and three wood for more fairways and only slightly less distance with mini driver. Then this morning was tempted by the dark side, watching a n other TH-camr who was suggesting to go from 13 to single figures I need to add 29 yards to my 230 average. Thoughts of driver experimenting came into my mind before thankfully I watched your video directly afterwards.

Oh right I know the video from jon perkins
He doesn't reference the starting distance you're hitting the ball though so it is misleading because it's using the averages of a 16 handicap driving distance vs the averages of a 9 handicap. Strange
Dangerous using averages without standard deviations or mentioning the absolute numbers but 'more distance=lower scores' is the latest sexy marketing of current times.

where did you get that chart? I don't understand why the longer the hole the longer you need to hit it to keep up with your handicap. As a back of the envelope calculation using the scratch yardage rating (normalized by 18) rating = length/220 + 2.25 could be used to represent average score of scratch vs length. 440 yard hole would average 4.25 where a 330 would average 3.75. (of course this doesn't take into account difficulty etc but just a rough number for the effect of length). What is it about the longer of the hole that it would be assumed that the scratch golfer would gain some super powers that they don't possess on the shorter holes? Or is the super power in the brain and we are assuming here that the shorter holes on averaged are designed to be more narrow on average so that the typical scratch golfer would be more expected to lay back on their tee shot (ie. the effective length of the holes are longer)?

So my strategy is to pitch about 25 yards and pitch again over the water, which works every time with usually 1-2 putt ok. But, I want to get this tee shot to work over the water and discover what swing weakness is preventing this goal. My HC shouldn’t be a factor, but it is 34 on this course. Any tips? Thanks.
