That was a slap to Kreese's face after he replaced Hawk with Robby in season 3. Kreese hyped up Hawk to be Cobra Kai's new champion, but once Robby joined, he practically tossed Hawk aside.
Come on, let's face facts here; he only recruited Robby for one reason, and one reason only - to get back at Johnny for not coming back to Cobra Kai, *HIS* Cobra Kai....

He didn't replace him, Hawk left.

You can see at 2:57 that all this time Hawk was thinking through a plan and was already looking at Robby's leg, wondering what he could do, and in the end he deliberately gives up his leg (at the same time, it is still the same leg, which already hurts him, so he uses it to stand on his healthy left leg.) so that Robby doesn't hit it again (2:53), and then knocks him to the ground and repeats the technique of Johnny Lawrence (with the help of which Johnny won a point against LaRusso in this season). This confirms that he learned Kreese's lesson well in season 3 and fights smart, and combined with his versatility and speed, he is a very strong fighter on this show.

Hawk was pure focused on fighting while Robby kept getting distracted By Terry and Kenny.
Hawk is just a bad ass with pure talent for the martial art.
3:10 it’s like Hawk knew Robby would try and catch his leg and possibly attack it again the way Johnny did to Daniel in the first movie. So he kicked there as bait and when Robby caught the leg, Hawk pulled Robby down by the arm and kicked him straight after impacting the ground after the whiplash left Robby open.
Hawk thought of this while Robby was getting cocky and yelling

Robby is the better fighter, but Eli deserved that win. After everything that happened he managed to stay on the good side. Plus it was a lesson for Robby, it showed him that aggression isn't the answer. I'm glad this fight happened, it truly represented that even if you're naturally better than your opponent, you should always stay focused to win.

The end of Hawks redemption arc. Even though Hawk realised the error of his ways at the end of season 3, he still had to suffer some repercussions for his actions in season 2 and 3.
Hawk was let into Miyagi Fang, but not with open arms, had to earn everyone’s trust again. Then he got his signature Mohawk cut off, and he lost his confidence. And with the help of binary brother Dimitri, a kiss from former girlfriend Moon, Hawk realised he’s not defined by his hair, made quick work of longtime nemesis Kyler, then won the call valley against Robby.

They clearly stated in season 5 that Eli, Robby, and Miguel are pretty much equal.
I think Robby is the most talented fighter in the series. 1st all valley he lost cuz of the dirty injury. This one he lost because he lost his resolve. That said, had Hawk fought the way he did from the beginning it wouldn't have even gone into sudden death. At this point I think Hawk was the better fighter due to understanding the 2 techniques the best.
