    Um actually, the Tarrasque is from French folklore, in a story about a huge terrifying beast that gets tamed by young nun, and then gets killed by the townspeople. Sure, this version of the Tarrasque looked different, but Kobolds were basically just differently named goblins in Germanic folklore, so I say it counts.

      @@moritzlinden7169 The word Orc is attributed to either an old English word meaning "Ogre" and Orcus, a god who seems to have been associated with tombs. Tolkien made up the usage of the word "Orc" in modern English as an alternate name for Goblins.

    Um, actually, even though Tarrasque is an iconic part of D&D multiverse it is loosely based on an European folklore creature: The Tarasque, which was a legendary dragon that was dwelling in France. The beast has been tamed by St Martha and is considered an important catholic legend in the south of France. Yet, aside from the name and reptilian nature they are nothing alike (the D&D version being a badass beast, a monster of dread and destruction.)

    • @Schattenmaler
      @Schattenmaler 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Um actually, you are correct. Orcs were mentioned way before Tolkien by the romans, celts and others (first time ~ 50 AD), but the descriptions differed a lot. Apparently the term oger is derived from the latin word for orc, which are in my opinion rather similar creatures. So I'd argue the romans invented the Orc and since they are european there is nothing wrong about the question.

    Um actually, "orcs" cannot legally be trademarked due to the words use in pre-copyright era literature (such as the land and sea orcs in the epic poem ‪Orlando Furioso), making it impossible for Tolkein to prove his creation was an original and consequently unrelated idea.

    • @bretterry8356
      @bretterry8356 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Um actually, that "orc" is completely unrelated in origin. In Italian (and French and Latin), the word is Orca, which means a large whale or sea monster. This is the same root as the Latin name orcus orca, or killer whale. There is no land orc, unless you've read an unorthodox translation that uses the word 'orc' for a different monster. Given that the poem is based on a mixture of the Chanson de Roland and Greek Mythology, and that Tolkein's "orc" is based on a Scandanavian goblin, it's pretty clear that the two are unrelated.

      Um, actually you have to say "Um, actually" and not just "actually" when correcting someone

    • @bretterry8356
      @bretterry8356 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Nathan Fedor That one I wasn't aware of and had to look up. I found out that the reason I missed it is that when translated into modern English, the term 'evil spirits' is used. Not too far removed from early descriptions of Goblins, and more likely to be of related origin to Tolkein's orc than the one in Orlando Furioso. The original word is Orcneas (pl) which translates more accurately to devils or ghouls, than evil spirits, as the literal translations is 'Pluto's corpses', as Orcus was an equivalent term for the Lord of Death. It is entirely possible that the Orca in Orlando Furioso gets its name from the same place, although the Orca more resembles the Leviathan than a goblin-like creature. Beowulf, unfortunately mentions Orcs only as an aside and gives no description of the creatures. So while this same 'Orcus' root may account for the origin of the word 'orc,' the physical description and characterization of them can't be linked definitively to either text. As has been mentioned by others, the physical description, characterization, and behavior of Tolkein's orcs is based on a Finnish goblin/giant known as a hiisi, although another commenter did mention that there is a Finnish word, 'örkki,' meaning monster. I am unsure if it is also etymologically connected to the Latin Orcus or just a coincidence.

    • @robertvaldes3374
      @robertvaldes3374 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was under the impression that Orc was an old English word meaning monster, as Tolkien was very adamant about making sure there were no words rooted in anything else, including middle English, since it was heavily influenced by the French language. Save two Spanish words, which I think one of is found in the prologue of Lord of the Rings. Basically, the story I'm told is that since Tolkien wanted to make a folklore for England, since king Arthur's tales were essentially all also either written and stolen from French stories or heavily influenced by them. Anyways, in the hobbit he used the word "goblin", which also means monster, to describe what are actually orcs, since in his mind the two words were just two names for the same thing, since goblin was a French word meaning monster and, well, orc is an old English word meaning monster (roughly). Thing is, Peter Jackson and others interpreted it as two different creatures. I could be totally wrong, though, but that's how I heard it.

Young anakin then proceeded to join a podrace,the boonta eve classic, to win the money they needed to buy a new T-14 hyperdrive generator, as their last one was damaged when trying to escape the trade federation's blockade of naboo. Nobody needed to convince watto to let him join the podrace. Also, as a side note, they originally planned to head straight to coruscant to ask for aid. If the trade federation didn't destroy their generator, Anakin would have never been freed, thus he never would have become a jedi.

First to 6 points wins, and if anyone finds a falsehood in the part of your card that's supposed to be true, they get to steal one of your points.

      Um, actually the legend goes that death gave the items after they didn't die because they used magic to cross a raging river that should have killed them when they tried to cross. The first two were eventually claimed by death due to the items... but yes, on dumbledore's theory. there's also a fan theory that the veil in the department of mysteries and the pensieve were also made by the peverell brothers.

  • @SariusxX
    @SariusxX 7 ปีที่แล้ว +68

    Um, actually Dumbledore says he thinks that the Peverell Brothers most likely just were very skilled wizards which created the Deathly Hollows themselves.
    So technically you can't say Zac is wrong, because thats statement against statement (and even in the world of Harry Potter that explanation sounds more probable than the "death" one).

    Um, actually, orcs were not entirely Tolkien's creations. He based them off of a Greco-Roman myth which in turn were likely based off of whales (orca). Due to the vagueness in description of the first orc (there was only one in the myth), he likely didn't make the connection to whales and just assumed it was humanoid.

    Um, actually, orcs long predate Tolkien. For example, the Orlando Furioso makes reference to an orc (as a sea monster) and it was written 1516. The word "orc" has traditionally been used simply as a sort of generic monster name and could refer to anything monstrous.

      Uh actually to be precise "orco" or the latin "orcus" from which "orc" clearly comes from is basically how "ogre" are called in Italian in pretty much every fairy tale. For instance the evil creature in the "Pussy in boots"? Orco. And Shrek in the Italian movie is? yes he's an "orco". Don't believe it? Then go to wikipedia, check "Ogre" and then switch to the Italian page. That's right "Ogre" -> "Orco". When the Lord of the rings was first published in Italian in order to avoid confusion they translated "orc" into "orchetto" (little ogre). Though nowadays pretty much every "orc" from Warhammer through D&D and to Warcraft is simply called "orco".
      Thanx Tolkien...

      Um actually, the word "orc" is drawn from the Anglo-Saxon form of the French word "ogre". So, we could just as well assume that the orcs are just ogres (that's right, Shrek might have been an orc).

    • @fallencaryatidcv
      @fallencaryatidcv 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Um, actually, Tolkien did distinguish between the two to some extent--in his earlier, unpublished works. Later, "The Hobbit" mainly refers to goblins and "The LotR" mostly to orcs.
      [Data: Silm, O=127, G=0; Hobb, O=6; G=221; Fell, O=78, G=5; TT, O=311, G=8; King, O=137, G=0]
      lotrproject.com/statistics/books/keywordsearch
      As for the origin of the word, Tolkien derived it from Old English "orcneas," which we can see appearing in context in "Beowulf." Old English is not drawn from French; OE is in the Germanic subdivision of the Indo-European language family, whereas French is from the Italic (includes Latin + Romance langs). After the Norman Conquest, Middle English emerged with Anglo-Norman French influences. While this was not a hard demarcation, the Beowulf manuscript is pretty solidly dated prior and may have been originally composed far earlier.

It will, however, burn your insides and leave you in extreme amounts of pain. Enough the liquid, surely, will cause your lungs to fill with fluid and begin burning that tissue with 4 to 6 hours, but with medical care within that time, you can have the fluids drained with an even lower chance of death and extreme abdominal pain and tissue damage.
