Each area/group has their own interpretation of traditional grip; there are some good general tips for all trad grips tho, like trying to keep your back two fingers on the stick for legato strokes, a big "pizza slice" angle, a slight left hand angle since the stick lays on top of the hand vs under on the right hand, and leading with the wrist. There may have either been some general applicable tips that you weren't applying, some group-specific stuff, or they were just wrong. Trad is a whole can of worms for sure!
Honestly, it's different from how I learned it:having your first finger on top of your middle, and you're ring stacked on your pinky while the stick is between the center bones of your finger
I’m terrible with traditional grip. I watched a TH-cam video w/ Vinny Colaiuta playing sometime in the 90’s. Vinny is crashing on this huge China cymbal to left of his hihat w/ his traditional grip hand !!!!!! My hands hurt just watching Vinny do that. Crashing on cymbals and hitting my rack tom/floor tom feel extremely awkward for me and my hands hurt terribly after. Mad respect ✊ to you drummers who use it and sound amazing . Watching how fluid and fast Buddy Rich could go around the kit with traditional grip still leaves me in total awe. I definitely think traditional grip has its place when playing very light patterns on the snare and I also bust out the traditional grip when I play Levon Helm songs from The Band, especially cripple creek. Traditional grip is the only was I can nail those little drags he does so well. That swampy funky half time feel sounds great when you play it correctly
Small tip: to find the balance point for the stick, split the stick into thirds, and the perfect balance point should be a third out from the butt of the stick

I'm a Scottish pipe band snare drummer, and we use traditional grip, but if I was playing like this I would definitely be scolded for having my thumb crossing over the stick too much- also we don't use our index finger for control. It's a different style of snare drumming obviously obviously but I think it's interesting how even though it's technically the same grip we use it so differently

You exert more energy when trying to play faster with higher stick heights which will cause you to burn out way faster than necessary. It takes practice and effort to play with lower stick heights

I used traditional grip through the late 1970s and 1980s DCI drum corps. I later switched to match grip and never looked back.

I don’t use my middle finger because I found that my index finger gives me enough stick control.

i cant do traditional with my left hand but i can do it with my right
once I start speeding up the stick keeps sliding forward. is there any point of pressure to keep this from happening?
Your index finger over the top of your stick should prevent that from happening
