Yeah, David really is the best! He is the master at vocal dynamics and building to a big "stunt" as you called it. As far as awards goes, he's won 2 GRAMMY Awards and 4 Dove Awards (Dove is the gospel music award). He's also won best tenor in a quartet, but its not as a prestigious award as the others... plus, it's hard to say he wasn't the best tenor in a group setting ALL of the years he was with the Gaither Vocal Band... he's like the Michael Jordan of contemporary tenors. Lol ...love it when you do DP reactions, which David Phelps you gonna do next?
I remember when Bill Gaither said David was the best tenor he ever heard. That is quite a compliment . Larry Gaitlin also thinks David is the greatest singer he has ever heard.

I've loved this song since the 70's when I first heard Bobby Hatfield's (Righteous Brothers) version which was so soulful and beautiful. Who knew that David could take it to another level!

Did you react to the original of this song by the Righteous Brothers, which was actually a solo by Bobby Hatfield without Bill Medley I believe. It was very good also and gives you a comparitive place to see how the song is interpreted over time and individual abilities.
He is able to excell at genres other then Gospel. React to his Cover of Witney Houston's I HAVE NOTHING, Pop songs like I WANNA KNOW WHAT LOVE IS by Foreigner, classicals and opera like NESUN DORMA, ANUS DEI with his daughter Maggie Beth Phelps, WHEN YOU WALK THROUGH A STORM with his sister who since died of cancer, and the list goes on. On a Mark Lowry Special a duet with Sandi Patti of A WHOLE NEW WORLD, and an amazing duet with Lana Ranahan of I'VE JUST SEEN JESUS, which was earlier done by Sandi Patti and Larnelle Harris which was were both spectacular, THE PRAYER with David and Lauren Talley, although the original recording showed a picture of Celine Dion which I believe was from David's The Voice Album. Btw being a good tenor is not a matter of how high you can sing. There are little things like tone (completely lacking in the horribly breathy first line), respect for the material and a desire to give the audience that material rather than just show off, not letting the song drown in acrobatics, and basic good taste. This was awful.

I adore Phelps' voice and love to hear him sing any song but not this one. Just my opinion; folks. I'll take Bobby Hatfield's, Righteous Brother's, version over any other singer's.

David is a awesome singer and love his stuff but the name the voice is already taken it is owned by Steve Perry so wish David would not have stepped on Steve's toes
Slow down your speech. It is hard to understand.
I haven't heard much by David Phelps, but almost everything I've heard has been over-produced. The meaning of this song should be very clear but it is almost drowned by the arrangement. This points to a failure of taste and a total lack of respect for the material. You're right to call this a stunt - it's not what I would call a performance.
Compare this gymnastics display and contempt for a very beautiful song with Austin's version - simple, elegant, heartfelt and with thought behind everything that he sings. Does Mr Phelps ever actually SING? There is no artistic value in how high you can sing, and I'm sorry to see you joining the reactors who seem to think that singing is some sort of competitive sport.
you missed the point the reactor actually likes this version by David when he says stunt he means when David goes high, look up David Phelps on his You Tube Channel he's got different types of music, better to do your own version sometimes than just copy eveybody else. And to say does David ever sing is such an insult. If you dont like the way he sings fair enough but if you are commenting on the reactor listen to what he says
