  • Before I begin building new gundam kit I need to show off my new birthday gift. This is the Iwata-Medea Smartjet Compressor IS-850. Its my replacement to the Testor Mini blue compressor that I had for years. I hope to get the most of this compressor but since I feel I'm still new at this I would mind some feed back on how to use this properly.
Again thanks to F & M Hobbies for getting this for me.

if you use tamiya paints can you paint at psi 5 ? the highest setting is 30 psi ? great looking compressor.

Yep definitely get a moisture trap for the airbrush end of the hose, words cannot describe how frustrating a glob of moisture ruining your paint job can be, got the Iwata Sprint jet compressor and Revolution airbrush.

as other said get an inline moisture trap I have the same compressor and after a while water will come to your airbrush as well even if you have a moisture trap on the compressor.

What airbrush would you recommend for painting models?

Hey Stryder, I'm in the market to get my first airbrush kit.
Does it come with the airbrush gun?
    Thanks in advance!

Excellent compressor. I recommend a braided hose. That thin plastic hose that comes with it is too flimsy in my opinion... Also, an inline moisture trap and MAC valve will offer an extra layer of protection, fine tune your pressure on the fly, and provide extra grip support.

I have the sprint jet which is basically the same compressor without the auto stop function. Iwata's stuff is so easy to work with. It's so quiet and I have painted several models using it since I bought it last fall. Some people don't like the regulator. But, I think it's extremely easy to adjust.

I would also recommend putting on a moisture trap that attaches to the airbrush as well. As good as the moisture trap is, you will still get moisture in the line once an awhile without it. I've had no problems since adding the additional trap.

You do not use the drain valve to regulate pressure. Replace it with a adjustable regulator. That valve is to drain the bowl only.
You can make this a better compressor (and last longer) by adding a tank. The auto shut off will work to fill the tank and then you may add a adjustable regulator to the tank. Plenty of TH-cam videos on how. The compressor will run a lot less and live a lot longer.

Only problem with using it the way your using it. It will burn the motor up fast. Because it will never shout off with the valve open. I spent many years doing automotive painting and they have mini flow control valve you can purchase to fit right on your gun with a quick disconnect and it fits right at your finger tips on your airbrush. Cost about 8 dollars on amazon Then it will operate as it should and you can adjust your pressure to what ever you need to paint and it will be constant here is the part description on amazon

Samuel Barnett - Thanks for that recommendation. Makes perfect sense. Just got this compressor as a part of a kit from Blick Art Materials, and this was a weakness for me. Wish it let you also read out the pressure so you could tell for sure what’s at the gun.
