    I haven't realized until recently... but, thanks for installing CBTC on the 7 train service!
    It makes me love the 7 train service even more. Although the R62As have gone to the 6 train service, these old trains are still here!
    The R62As are now under the assignment of the 6 train service, and if I needed to ride these old trains for fun, I can just ride on the 6!
    ...and if others want to ride on the R142/As on Manhattan, they can ride on the 2, 4, and the 5 trains!

    This is a great and informative video. Next time though lower the music in the mix. It's drowning out the info and bit off putting.

    can't believe this video is from 7 years ago and now in 2024 we are getting CBTC on the 3rd (G) and 4th (F) lines

    Would be so cool if the MTA would install the CBTC equipment on the museum trains which, currently, are not permitted to run on CBTC lines.

      sadly its impossible because so called SMEE's are too complex and old to have CBTC installed. But NTT's (trains made from 2000 to present day), can have cbtc installed. WHen the R211's finally come to the 8 av line, 8 av will have CBTC installed and their old R46s (a car that can't have CBTC) will be retired.

      R62 type trains have technical equipment which is old and harder to maintain, in contrast to the newer train cars. I don't have an exact reason why MTA are considering in replacing R62s with the newer R142As, which has already been done with the R62As being replaced completely with R188s.

      I like the R 62 on the 3 line but not on the 6 line so now this make sense that they took out half of the R142 A and transfer it to the 7 line because the 6 has no CBTC

    What is being said at 1:00 is completely false. Fixed block signalling allowd a precise speed control of the train when used with transmission lines along the track that indicate the speed profile to follow and even accurate stopping points at stations (very useful when platform screen doors are used). The technology has been used in Paris since the 70s and has since been improved with VAL (65 seconds headway between trains in regular operation or 55 trains per hour per direction) and Meteor automatic train control (on line 14, also in Paris).

    CBTC and "fixed block signaling" are not alternative concepts, and the fact that NYCTA's own engineers don't know this should tell you something. CBTC simply means you use a wireless communications system to give the train its speed command. It may or may not know exactly where the trains are and might not efficiently separate the trains. A moving block system is an alternative to fixed block signaling, but is not necessarily communications-based. Also, a moving block system is not necessarily of higher capacity than a fixed block system. Again, that NYCTA's own engineers don't know this should tell you something. For instance, London's Victoria Line has fixed blocks but the minimum platform reoccupation times are in the 40-50 second range, far shorter than NYCTA's L line. That's because what really matters to capacity is not whether the signaling is fixed block or moving block", but other aspects of the design, primarily the train's spare braking capacity.

    1:29 How many $50/hour union workers does it take to screw in a light bulb? Apparently... 6, 1 to screw in the light bulb and 5 to watch.

      It's not as bad as u think, unlike con-ed where it takes 1 man to dig a hole and 5 to watch, ain't UNIONS great? Anyway, The MAIN REASON fares are high and going higher is every G-Damn politician in NYC has given the MTA the greatest pension in history. MTA pays out more in salaries and pensions than it takes in.

    Nice revisit of CBTC, but whoever's writing these scripts really needs to work on simplifying the language used in these explainer videos. If it's aimed at the public, we shouldn't be hearing RCC speak like 'wayside' or unnecessarily advanced English words like 'ancillary', 'warrants', 'implementing'. If I recall, the Operation Track Sweep explainer video seemed like it had a good review of the copy to ensure it used plain, simple language to get the point across.

    CBTC could of went to the (4)(5) and (6) too but instead of converting R142as into R188's y'all could of well you know what forget CBTC
    (4) train should have R188's
    (5) trains with R142as
    (6) trains with R142as
    Come on MTA almost everyone who takes the 6 train is still fighting for there R142as and there not gonna stop until you give them back so MTA expect more comments like this

      LIRR SBS PRODUCTION Flushing needed it more. The signals there are older and the neighborhoods it serves are becoming more popular and undergoing changes.
      In addition, the R62As were transferred back to the 6 line to increase service on the line during rush hours and end the chronic overcrowding and long dwell times that currently exist on Lexington Avenue. It also improved 2/5 and 4 train service since the transfer of R62As meant that there were 20 R142As freed up for 4 train use, which freed up some R142s for the 2/5 trains. As a result, most of the IRT now has increased service, which is great for me since I felt like I’ve been waiting forever on the Brooklyn IRT for a train home after 7:30 PM on the way home from college.

    List of CBTC swaps
    Flushing
    This required the R142As on the 6 to move to the 7 and become R188s, as new trains are needed. In return, the 6 got R62As.
    Queens Boulevard
    This required the R160s on the N, Q & W to move to the E, F & R lines. In return, the N, Q & W got R46s. The E line and some of the F line were already assigned R160s before this move.
    Canarsie
    All trains assigned to the L line were simply equipped.
    Crosstown
    All trains assigned to the G line were simply equipped. The G line already swapped out R46/68/As for R160s before this move as a result of maintenance adjustment due to Queens Boulevard CBTC. The rest of the sets from the E, F & R lines got equipped as well in case a loan is needed.
    Broadway
    All trains on the N, Q, & W will be directly replaced by new R211s or some Alstom R160s, which will be equipped. The R46s will retire, while the R68/As will move to the B/D. The Siemens R160 will probably not move to ease driver training.
    Nassau Street
    This will require the J/Z to be all R179s, which may require additional ones from the C. The R143s and the first 64 R160s will be exclusive to the L and the rest of the four-car R160s will be exclusive to the M.
    8th Avenue
    All R160s/R211s on the A, C, E will be simply equipped.
    6th Avenue
    This won’t happen until the R268 gets delivered for the B & D lines.

    7 years in and let’s count all the failures… Train ID’s jumping from one train to another, crashes of the system, lack of implementation, OCC formally (RCC) can not communicate clearly due to crap radios and dead spots, yet they can put WiFi in every station in less than a year, or replace all the turnstiles in the same amount of time replacing token clerks, has this increase in automation is better?, let the Jay st power outage 12/11/24 be a lesson, how many times had the communication and power gone out and all the screens in the field and OCC went dark? The only push behind this is to ELIMINATE JOBS AND DUMB DOWN THE MOTORMAN!!! We at one time were EXPECTED to be competent and do our jobs, and were more financially compensated accordingly…. Now they want us to baby sit their train set as they sit somewhere (OCC) remotely trying to tell us what is happening in the field! I am a 33 year veteran retired NYCTA Motorman, facts….

  • @andrewfischer556
    @andrewfischer556 ปีที่แล้ว

    The last quote in this video is questionable ... MTA says "we can provide more trains per hour when ridership warrants it" - No, they can't. They don't have enough electric power to run more trains per hour. MTA would have to fund another capital project another $100,000,000 to $4Billion investment to add more power feeds to the rail lines, currently not funded, not planned, not designed - plus, where will all this power come from on the grid ? NYC and NYS government is already creating laws and policies to overload the electric grid. I'm not saying CBTC is bad or it shouldnt proceed, but dont make false claims that CBTC allows MTA to run more trains per hour

    I am confused, can't we just stick GPS trackers on each train and track them through an app in the meantime (like what we have for buses with MTA Bus Time). This may be tricky for the underground sections but won't this temporarily circumvent the problems with not knowing where a train is?

    • @XxLiLGiJoE17xX
      @XxLiLGiJoE17xX 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      SowMuchMore no you cannot do that. Are u trying to kill people? They need to use technology that runs through the train, the third rail, and signals. If you put GPS on the trains, how are they gonna know where trains are underground? Do u have service on your phone when you're in tunnels? What about when trains cross under the water? That's completely unsafe. This is the best solution and I don't understand how you are confused, the video clearly explains what's going on.

    • @britishenough7690
      @britishenough7690 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      SooMuchMore The subway is mostly underground. GPS doesn't work under rivers, last time I checked. And also, the space between 2 (7) trains is 7.5 minutes more when CBTC wasn't on its line (trains every 8.5 min to trains ever min)
