It was a classic freak of the week episode but Lois elevated it.
Lois brings so much lightness and fun to the series and the friendship with Clark. Next to her he is lighter and more cynical and less sad and moody like with Lana.
It seems like Lex is flirtier with Lana than before, maybe foreshadowing...
I love the iconic Clois Dunk Tank scene with the Avril Lavine's song.
    I will give it 🌹

I think Tom just shines with Erica and we saw it with Clark and Lois. The dunk tank scene is iconic as it gets but it's all thanks to actors and their camaraderie and charisma. The way Tom lights up about Lois/Erica is great because I agree with Tom, Clark really did become free around her. Clark was finally able to be himself and that's a really beautiful thing.

The dunk tank scene was iconic, so electric, such fun. It just magnifies how Clois were perfect for each other from the start. Clark was his true self only around her because he was always this righteous dude around everyone else but with her, he could banter and that’s why she got to know him so well to, so kindred since the beginning. I can't wait for next week.

The fact that the dunk scene was completely unspoken and Tom and Erica made it one of the best and most iconic scenes in the entire series, says a lot about their chemistry and performance. It was beautifully done😍👌I actually enjoyed this episode. I feel like season 4 was so fun and yes they did have some bizarre episodes, but I think that was the point of season 4 where the writers were trying new things and just taking the characters to different and new places.

Love Tom's thoughts about the dunk tank scene. You know what I love about the iconic dunk tank scene. They're true to each other. Clark and Lois have zero pretenses. They're not hiding anything they're feeling, and they just see each other... warts and all. Their communication and honesty only gets better as their relationship grows from here, but that head tussle and grin said it all. Lois could reach out and touch Clark immediately, and Clark would receive it with no issues. That's it right there... they saw each other as people, not objects of affection.

  • @Outdafakeonz

That ending though. It was perfect. The interaction between Clark and Lois looked so genuine, as did the look of devastation on Chloe's face realizing that she's been sent back into the phantom friend zone over her own cousin. Also using My Happy Ending as the track was the chef's kiss.❤❤❤

@@toddyboy I love Chloe as a character and was overall rooting for her but never thought they had much chemistry at least in season 1. I don't mind her pining a bit as long as it's not too drawn out. Does it suck being rejected? Yes? Okay then deal with it haters. It sucks for Chloe sometimes. What are you expecting here. It would be weird for her NOT to react to Clark and Lois flirting. To me it makes her character feel more real, that look of "oh no not again" is so accurate. And it reinforces her loyalty and friendship to have put the pressure to betray him behind her, despite the fact she's still taking these emotional punches.

He can’t stop talking about them and it’s fun to hear his thoughts! ❤ I love when Clark got to smirk around Lois because he's just a funny guy that loves her energy and their back and forth banter. Tom mentioned how he has that energy with Erica as well- so much fun. The best TV couples have romantic banter! ✨

  • @yasminsefi2000

The dunk tank scene is literally the most iconic scene on Smallville and it's basically just Tom and Erica in the moment which makes it so compelling. Also Tom referring to Clois as a rom-com couple is very true because that is what they are and Tom enjoys that. I love how Tom mentioned Moonlighting because Maddie and David are the pinnacle TV couple! he has great taste and it shows because he loves Clark and Lois and their banter and energy. The crackling chemistry between Tom and Erica is comparable to Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis, Myrna Loy and William Powell, Carole Lombard and Clark Gable, Hepburn and Tracy, and Bogart and Bacall- these are the couples you want to be and Tom and Erica sold it from the very start till the very end. Ryan said it best the SPARK Clois bring just POPS!

11:02 yesss Tom gets it!! Clark becomes so much more interesting and toms acting improves we see more of his abilities. Personally that’s one of the main reasons I love Clark and Lois it’s because of the choices they Tom and Erica made as actors in retelling this love story

The presence of Erica's Lois really brought out an aspect of Clark (and the show), that hadn't really been there before. I agree, seeing the "Moonlighting"-style banter between Clark and Lois felt fresh at the time, considering we had 3 years of him just pining and moping over Lana, and Chloe playing the jealous best friend. It was great to see him have a sense of fun around someone of the opposite sex.

I really enjoy Tom being as analytical as he was in this episode. It's like he was viewing the episode through his director's glasses and breaking down the different elements from a storytelling perspective. It's a great POV.
I do have to wonder how Michael can be so insistent on down-to-earth realism in a show about an alien dude who can shoot heat beams from his eyes. And come on, next episode "Devoted" is one of the funniest episodes. Cheerleader Chloe never fails to crack me up.
(Also, "incredulous" means "unwilling or unable to believe something," so the show cannot be incredulous. Michael is incredulous.)

Oh man. I will say there is some comedic awkward/pity value seeing Chloe like that but it is...very uncomfortable to go on for so long. At least it kind of gets it out of her system, I think there's less Chloe-Clark tension for the rest of the season (e.g. Bart and Mxyzptlk flirt with her in front of him, she seems cool with it).

Tom coming back for the last 3 seasons and being becoming an executive producer for S9/S10 makes so much sense, he so badly wanted Clark and Lois to be together which is why he even signed back on. Erica in her recent signing said her and Tom both enjoyed the banter so much in the later seasons especially at the DP planet. The showrunners before S8 even said Tom and Erica felt like this was exactly what they were meant to do. You can feel the passion Tom has for them and it's only episode 3, he wanted to see them play out. They're a special couple for sure. The dunk tank scene solidified my love for them. It's too bad DC placed strict restrictions on Lois and Clark but now I feel like it worked out for the best because they got to be real great friends and create a beautiful foundation.

I especially laughed at Michael being fed up with the football and thinking "haven't we already gone through this". I didn't even know what he was talking about to be honest. The brief mention that Clark isn't allowed to play football from season 1? We have definitely not explored Clark being a football player before haha. Don't get me wrong, season 4 being the football season was one of the most unnecessary arcs on the show to me, it felt like the writers were like "oh shit this is our last chance to play out the small town star high school quarterback trope in senior year" so they threw it in. And it's fine, and there's one really cool scene that comes of it. But yeah...that's just an opinion, I certainly can't accuse it of being a repeat of a previous arc!

@@jerodast I actually quite like it! Of the school related arcs (which I do think are the weakest in the show) the football one is probably the best. Clark's clash with Jonathan about playing, his own desire vs his fear of hurting someone etc. And that episode later where he has to give up the chance at a scholarship because he knows it's not morally right and is afraid of permanently injuring someone. I think it's definitely interesting and you're right, not something we've done before

As always i just love loooove Tom's input. He not only analyze it just from the monster of the week perspective but he also see it from the character perspective of a long term storytelling. The little bits and scene here and there do set up things for the future. Like Clark stading his ground with Jonathan is gonna have consequences in the future and repetition, whether it be in similar scenes is to reinforce that. I also like that Tom (and Ryan) are more forgiving with theshow at points because even with its negatives, you cant forget this was a teen show in the 2000s. That was on a teen network. So context for that it's important when analyzing its plot and its development.

Clois worked due to the chemistry and commitment to the characters from Erica and Tom. The dunk tank scene is iconic because it marks a turning point in the Clois friendship and is foreshadowing for the shippers.
This may be cruel to say but I howled with laughter after seeing Chloe's face when she witnessed the "sparks" begin to ignite between Clois. That was the final nail in the coffin for any fantasies Chloe had of Clark. Back in the day, there were many Chlarkers.

I was sort of a Chlarker but the fact is I saw they really did not have chemistry back in the season 1 finale. So it was more that I liked Chloe as a character, was extremely tired of Lana, but didn't particularly want Clark with either of them. (Frankly I was an Charklicia guy I guess. Always root for redemption!) Soo...there was a very, very mean/dark humor value to Chloe's "god....damn...it, this AGAIN?" face, but I wasn't exactly laughing, just like, nodding in agreement. @vbrandy7088 A lot of the problems he identifies are valid, but you have to view them through a few different lenses to get the context. It's an early 2000s show. The turnaround for each episode is really quick, and finally, sometimes you have to make a small stupid story choice for it to pay off in a big way later. The payoff to revisiting the football stuff is that it sets up Clark's evolution and the start of him finally telling people about his secret, which changes the character dynamics a lot.

🌹 appreciated Tom's take on the storyline and characters and performance choices. It wasn't that he's just being positive to balance Michael's negativity, he was just explaining truthfully cuz idk but I think he enjoys dissecting the eps as much as [the audience].
😔Starting to get burnt out from Michael's criticism - It's not that he's "shitting on the show" so much as its that he's just choosing not to accept the parameters of the show. It's a teen drama on a low budget network hot off the problematic 90s pop-culture and based on the most iconic superhero of all time. There's things they can't change about the story, or else it's no longer Superman's origin - and the majority of things they do change (like the baby's ship coming down hidden in a meteor shower, etc) actually benefit the show. I mean I have consistently defended Michael cuz most of his "critiques" were about production value. But now it's at the point where I just don't think he gets it. Idk...🤷‍♀️

To be fair this really was a nonsense plot episode. But....just get over it dude. We know. You don't have to get so fucking ANGRY about it for an HOUR, damn. It remind me of Let's Play videos (similar genre to rewatch podcasts...) where the gamer gets really tilted at something they're having trouble with and starts just criticizing every design decision in sight. And all the criticisms might be dead on, but the thing is it's SO TRANSPARENT you're only bringing it up because you're mad, not because this is the time and place for it. Maybe Michael needs to give himself more cool off time halfway through an episode.

    • @asyouwish3636

      @jerodast AGREED!
      so 2 things:
      (1) hmm the more I think on it, it wasnt actually a nonsense ep. I mean yeah the antagonist is a (silly) one-off (yet perfectly reflects the theme of Clark's internal struggle about transformation), and yeah they could have been more creative w the excuse to have Lois live in Smallville, but the writing is certainly at normal levels and this ep sets up alot that gets paid off throughout the show (ie: Lois getting a bug for investigating and eventually for writing, Clark and Lois reciprocal need for and receiving of help from each other, Clark initiating and also accepting he needs to reinvent himself - big pay off in S10, etc) cuz I've only seen the show as an adult, and missed the experience of watching it live, (but it did give me the comparison from watching dozens of other similar format shows over the years) and the ep wasn't bad at all. talk to me again in S7 when for my 2nd watch I had to fast forward thru most of like a dozen eps
      and
      (2) there was a def shift in Michael for this season. like, at 1st I was giving the benefit of the doubt, but then the last handful of podcasts I've been skipping thru his rants. but I noticed that there is also a shift in the comments (on youtube and Instagram), it's blowing up about Lois. everyone is losing their minds, in a very positive way, overwhelmed w excitement that she's finally arrived. and maybe the two are completely unconnected, but we all know how much Michael is an attention thief (and also how he doesn't pay attention to eps that aren't Lex heavy which means he misses important details which means he ends up disliking those eps more)... my point is: I think Michael is jealous of Lois (lol not Erica, LOIS) and that's why even his greatest defenders are asking him to back down. cuz in 70 podcasts, I've never seen so many comments about his negativity as I have for this

Oh man, the dunk tank was such an iconic moment. Watching it live, though, it was bittersweet. It was such a neutron bomb for Chloe, and you saw it in her face as she realized it, and you can pinpoint the moment when her heart implodes. But beyond that, it was the one moment, the moment of the singularity for Smallville where everyone watching knew the destination was Lois & Clark.
Which of course caused no small manner of distress in the CW message boards for the shippers, which at the time tickled me greatly.

The iconic Clois dunk scene!!! 🥰🥰🥰 Truly one of my favourite endings of the show. It really showcased the dynamic of their relationship that we would see throughout the series: they're fun, flirty, jokey and don't take things too seriously. After all the ansgt with Lana it was so nice to see Clark let go and relax like he did around Lois. He goofed around, they bantered, he smiled more. It was so good to see and really highlighted their chemistry and how iconic they would become as a couple.
TOM GETS IT! I love that he gets what we all see and love about the show at this point in the series. This is where we see Clark open up more around Lois and their banter and scenes really gave him more to do than just pine. I do love this show by one complaint has always been that they dragged the Clark and Lana romance out way too long. You guys haven't even started that angst yet haha.
Michael, you really have to remember what genre this show is. Its not supposed to be gritty or edgy or too serious. Yes, it has moments like that but most of it is fun and lighthearted. This scene isn't the most amazing but I think it's actually quintessential Smallville, focusing on the character moments between wacky plotlines.
Also in regards to the female characters kicking ass: as far as I remember Chloe can't really do much. She'll defend herself as best she can but she's not a fighter. Lana had a whole arc earlier in the series that you're forgetting about where she was tired of always being targeted and being a damsel so she learned to defend herself. And Lois actually makes the most sense. Her dad is a general and she grew up on an army base and was taught to fight from a young age.
Thank god for Tom tbh because I don't think I could handle all of this negativity without him. 😂 I love you Michael but this is long form storytelling. Not every episode will be remarkable. Most of them are just fun like this.
I have to give this episode at least a rose 🌹 and a half for the iconic dunk tank scene, all the Clois moments in general and I actually find it a pretty fun watch.

I thought the name calling was awful but noticeably less reprehensible and dangerous than stringing a freshman up in a field, which, as much as Tom denies it was "accepted publicly", was a known tradition at Smallville HS for decades - Pete warned him about it before they'd even attended their first day. So yeah unfortunately very believable people would pile on like this if there's a toxic culture festering at the school. Certainly high school students are _capable_ of better and of standing up for social issues, but they're usually not mature enough to really change things more than incrementally if the toxicity is already entrenched.

Lois SAVES Clark (again! and it's only her third episode) - that's a big deal because it shows the contrast between Clois and Clana. Lois is a strong woman who can look after herself AND Clark, making the Clois relationship more equal than Clana's right from the start. This allows Clark to be the superhero he needs to be later. I agree with Michael that it's weird that Lana and Chloe know how to fight at a very high level but it makes sense that Lois is a skilled fighter because of her military upbringing and I'm sure her father raised her to be able to look after herself. Lastly, any episode with Erica Durance/Lois is a good episode for me! Love her and Clark together - definitely boo on the show for dragging the Clana storyline past high school!

RIGHT?!?! I mean, what the hell? Since he's in his 50s now, I *get* not being into this "Coming-of-age" series in this generation of "streaming" and being used to more "mature material." HOWEVER, as a person that was literally *on the show* should be *used to your time* and maybe even appreciate it a little?? 🫤 Not only for the "everything was slower back then" feel, but because ya know, it boosted your damn career in the industry. 😒😒
Him saying "I would never watch this show" is such a *huge slap in the face to the fandom* that held this show near and dear to their hearts for years and was the reason the whole show lasted as long as it did. For most, this show helped the fans through some really rough times in life. Does Michael not know or understand that??
He must've known he wasn't going to be 100% into it (being a grown man and all) but as a grown man and one of the best actors on the series he could *AT LEAST PRETEND* for our benefit. What was the point of doing this "for the fans" if you were just gonna shit on it, hate-watching after season 1?? It makes no sense.
It truly breaks my heart when I see kids of this generation discussing how much they love Smallville now, only to have Lex Luthor himself make everyone feel bad about it. And he's not in character, so he's not being paid to act like an asshole, he's doing it for free, and that bothers me more than anything. 😮‍💨😮‍💨

The fact is the Lex scenes are less believable adult thriller writing than the high school scenes are believable high school writing. The situations are more extreme than reality but the sloppy, aggravating, spiky emotions are pretty dead on. I really find it kinda sad that Michael is so insistent on looking for some kind of mature, edgy adult oriented tone to the show that he has to cling to eps like "Insurgence" like nuts for the winter, when even that episode, while very good for _Smallville_ is objectively not even as good as a mid-tier Marvel movie or forgettable 90s thriller. (Don't get me wrong, "Insurgence" is made BETTER by the fact it uses Lex, Lionel, and Martha the way it does and revolves around the Secrets of Clark Kent, I'm glad they made the episode. I'm just saying the show fundamentally is not built to be very serious about gritty, realistic themes.)

They’re stringing a longer plot line together for Lana, and you don’t like that either? Make up your mind on what you want them to do haha.

Love that Michael loves the insane flirting between Clois. The dunk tank scene has lived in my head rent free since I first saw it 20 years ago. Talk about iconic and the chemistry! I love that Tom adores the scene as well, you can tell him and Erica have always had magic. I love a cute bantery couple who think being playful is flirting. It's definitely in Tom's wheelhouse bc the movies and shows he likes all involve rom-com couples who banter and he has that same energy with Erica. I also love how Tom is so excited to see Clark have a personality and bantering ala Moonlighting. You can just see he loves this Clark. He loves how FREE Clark is because that is Tom. I also love how Tom says "this is where it begins for me"- I couldn't agree more!

The bullying of “Scabby Abby”is very real. I am short and i mean very short, I don’t break 5’0 short! So couple that with having very bad acne as well. Yeah you get bullied a lot for things out of your control and it’s sad because all you want to do is fit in.

It's lousy. I knew a guy back in high school who was nicknamed "Pizza Face" because of the many zits he had on his face. He was actually a nice kid -- studious and hard working. We were on Student Council together and he had so many great ideas to bring to the table. It just goes to show you -- don't judge a book by its cover.

Chloe welcoming "Lois Lane to the bull pen??" Of course, the end football catch/dunk & John's surprised reaction! And one of the BEST ENDINGS IN TELEVISION HISTORY!! Look past the wonky & look at the awesome! Love you guys!

The moment I saw the title of the video I BURST OUT LAUGHING, because I can see someone did their homework 🤣! The Clois dunk scene is INDEED iconic, like you have no idea! It changed lives lol, viewer perceptions, made people start to watch the show, even to this day it goes viral on tiktok over and over. And we have never seen Clark smile that big before, I still remember my shock seeing it for the first time - and that with him and Lois still in their 'hating each other' phase 😂
After watching this fully I'm laughing even more, because Michael found himself watching what is essentially a regular CW teen drama with superheroes and is fighting for his life 🤣
Also shout out to the listener calling out the DRAGGED OUT to hell Clark and Lana storyline. But why did I get the impression that Michael thinks it may be over and they may be moving on now? Becauseee... oh boy 🤣 And Ryan is so spot on about Lois and is already tired of that story as well, hoping Lana will figure something out.. Oh sweet summer child 🤣 I'm just truly excited to see all the suffering, cause if I had to suffer through that for years, then I'll watch you guys suffer too 🤣🤣🤣

Guys... Dr. Fine threatened Lois by saying she would end up in the psych ward, as the treatment would not have the antidote, she would go crazy. Therefore, she would have no memory of anything. Not sure how you all missed that point. Also, Dr. Fine went to the psych ward and Abigile would be back the next week to school, per Chole. but I love the show and the podcast, keep it up!!

this is normal for a teenager with hormones etc. you guys are really watching this through the old souls eyes you have grown over the years.

Yeah I didn't really see anything weird about that scene. a) you're underaged boys and an adult woman is walking through the locker room. That's weird as hell. You're gonna stare at her. Lois seems to have a thing for going right up to the line of sexual harassment of minors. b) I don't recall any egregious catcalls or anything, but I admit it was probably backgrounded and I wouldn't remember.

    • @jerodast
      @jerodast 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

The one positive to the central storyline here (putting aside the Clark & Lois stuff, we get it guys they're cute together okay), is Brianna Brown giving it her all to make it work despite the ridiculous writing. It reminds me very much of Amy Adams in "Craving". She is capable of much better than this and brings a certain earnestness to Abby that the story doesn't really deserve. Not saying BB is necessarily as talented as AA (lol comics do love the alliterative names huh), but she has had some much meatier appearances in less silly shows and done a fine job with them, moreso than many freak of the week day players. (Chelan Simmons is in next week's episode and also has a career that reaches at least C-level, but unlike BB she's just one of a gang of cheerleaders, plus she has tended toward camp, horror and titillating roles anyway.)

the dunk tank is one of THE BEST MOMENT in Smallville and from this moment we know how the relationship between Lois and Clark is going to be! i love this moment and their smiles...and we can see aside Chloe's face where we literally can read that she knows she will never have a chance with Clark, i felt bad for her but i was so happy for CLOIS!😍
and apparently Jensen Ackles showed Erica how to throw the ball to ensure she will get the target.

Fun fact! To help set the throwback feel of the first scene in this episode on top of “Freshman Year 2001” and Whitney’s return, in the background Stereoblis’ “Eight Half Letters” is playing, which is the exact same song that was playing when we very first are introduced to Smallville High School in Season 1 Episode 1!

    • @jerodast

I agree with Michael it felt like kind of a weak episode/story to bring him back for, but as just a nod "hey regardless of the circumstances it'd be nice to bookend the high school years with one more appearance from you" I guess it's kind of nice. Shame about the filming debacle.

I was 12-22 and it helped me pursue art, fall in love with comics, and write my own novel. Lex and Clark's dynamic was my favorite. It contains a lot of nuance and complexities and even though there are some corny moments in the show or some holes - it holds up even in 2024!

Lois walking in on him playing football is also a significant scene for their relationship, as it is she who challenges him on becoming a football player instead of being a wedgie magnet. That's a theme with Lois and Clark, she makes him reconsider his assumptions.

Honestly I thought that marked him as about a decade older than most of the then-teen fans of the show haha. But it's definitely an influential show for television. A lot of people might've said Sam & Diane. (Another show a little too old for my growing up years.) Actually that's interesting - what other _combative_ will-they-won't-they shows are iconic? Jim & Pam pretty much love each other from the start. Maybe _Homeland_ lol (which Brianna Brown appeared on for a short guest run).
