Rainbow Village in Taichung, TAIWAN + some news to share...

- Did you know that bubble tea (aka boba tea) was invented in Taiwan? The bubble tea craze took over the world and so when we were in Taiwan, we decided we had to check out the birthplace and original store of where bubble tea was invented which apparently happens to be in Taichung. Taichung had a number of other great attractions too like the rainbow village, animation lane, a totoro stop, a beautiful ice cream shop and also the Zhongshe flower market.
Our final days in Taiwan were spent in Taichung so it was a bit of a bitter sweet time as we knew we were soon to return to NZ after having to cut our travel plans short. This vlog was shot way back in early-mid March 2020.
Taichung was a lovely city though and we were happy we got to end our trip and Taiwan travels there. We hope you enjoy this final Taiwan travel vlog of ours!
Kicking things off we explored Rainbow Village in Taichung. An amazing story of a war veteran who painted his village to prevent it from being torn down and commercialised. It worked as it attracted a lot of attention and became a tourist attraction. Making a trip to the Rainbow Village is a must do activity when visiting Taichung, Taiwan.

For any bubble tea, boba tea, pearl milk tea fans out there... or for anyone who has ever wondered where bubble tea was invented, well it's hotly debated but it's commonly believed to have originated from Chun Shui Tang (春水堂) in Taichung. If you want to visit the birthplace of bubble tea, make sure you visit Chun Shui Tang's (春水堂) original store! You basically get to drink a piece of bubble tea history by visiting this boba origin shop XD

From Chun Shui Tang 春水堂 it's a quick stroll to Painted Animation Lane which is a very cool spot if you're an anime fan. It's an alley featuring large, colourful paintings of popular anime and cartoon characters.

Hours: Open 24 hours
Keeping in line with the animation theme Yen and I check out the famous Totoro Bus Stop a short ride away. It's not a real bus stop, but if you're a Totoro or Studio Ghibli fan, it's a nice lil spot to check out. There isn't much else in that area though just be aware!

We also visited Miyahara Ice Cream as we read it had Hogwarts vibes (and being Harry Potter fans and ice cream lovers, we thought why not!) Turns out that Miyahara Ice Cream is a popular ice cream parlor that's located in an elegant historic building that has a massive gift selection and a restaurant too. We just went for the ice cream. There were a ton of speciality ice cream flavours at Miyahara Ice Cream and despite the long line, it moved relatively quick.

Finally, we say our final goodbye and wrap up from Zhongshe Flower Market Taichung. It's a popular photo spot with a big flower market and landscaped garden beds. Zhongshe Flower Market Taichung is filled with beautiful flowers but it is a bit of a drive out from the main city. Be aware that Taichung doesn't have an MRT system but they do have buses that run most places, but for somewhere like the Zhongshe Flower Market, it's definitely the easiest to catch an Uber to get there. Just make sure your driver is able to wait with you to return back to the city so you both don't miss out.

Great Taichung vibes here! I actually haven’t had a chance to visit the Rainbow village yet. Definitely on my itinerary in the future. One of the things I love about Taichung is the abundance in bubble tea shops. I personally recommend trying out more local places. Stay safe and enjoy your time at home 🙌💯😎😊

Taiwan would be a great place to be right now. Seems like they’re one of the countries who have handled it the best. See people are still able to go out now
Every when we were there ppl were out and about only difference was almost everyone wore masks and there were cleaners everywhere. I think jumping on it so early did the trick they managed to keep the numbers low and then eventually stamped it out.
That first place was soooo cool, I love the colors. I am a huge boba tea person!

Great story behind Rainbow Village - you're a good storyteller Yen. Drinking from the birthplace of bubble tea, that must have been a nice feeling. I've gotta say the scene at 7:49 is beautiful and calming with great music choice. Couldn't tell for sure if it was actually raining or not though lol

Yeah it is a shame but its all good in the end we get to spend quality time with our parents. And on another plus New Zealand has really managed to get the virus under control so it's relatively safe here.

Haha yea that guy was great.. just playing music and taking photos with people all afternoon 😁💕 just googled gamcheon, looks really nice but thought it looked a bit more like Jiufen with the colourful buildings all on the mountainside 🌈🥰 Definitely gotta check stuff out for yourself especially when it comes to something like the first bubble tea invented 😁👍

Haha nah this one is in a different city 😁 that other bubble tea place will have to remain a mystery for now lol 😂 Haha Peter loves tendons but they creep me out! We did end up seeing Rainbow Grandpa! 🥰🌈 Unfortunately when we went back once we started filming he was gone though. Didn't realise he's 98, that's incredible! Thank you, we're so glad we made it back too before NZ shut its borders 😯

I think NZ's cream is super creamy, I don't think we can get that anywhere, not even in Malaysia, our "creamy" ice cream will be pretty off for a ice cream connoisseur :P
Yeah! Go us non book readers 😂😂😂 one thing about leaving new Zealand is the ice cream everywhere else is pretty disappointing 😅 but that's ok cause there's boba tea in Taiwan that can't be beat 😁

Peter and Yen I was staying with a friend and had the use of a scooter but I didn’t see any of the great places you showed. I wish I had watched the video before. I hung out at some good libraries and large Starbucks and some neat temples. Now I’m in Taipei and I like it here much better

This one's taichung about 1 hour high speed train away from Taipei. The second largest city in Taiwan. But both are very cool places to visit 🙂✌

Sorry guys! I love trying new things but while in Hamilton (which lets face it, its Hamilton lol) I tried bubble tea and was let down hardout! So have not tried since. In saying that, it’s quite hard to find bubble tea in New Plymouth. It still looks yum as!
