Can't thank you enough for this video series Greg! Excellent detail and really well delivered. Your van is amazing and mine is coming along much better than it would have as a direct result of your efforts on youtube. I think you might well have bumped up the sales of the companies that supplied your parts by a significant sum of cash too :) I've certainly used most of them! All the best for the European tour - you've both earned it!
Hi Bob, I’m really pleased that it has been useful to you as it’s done it’s job. We have been fortunate to work with a few very good companies on this project and I hope they too appreciate the hard work put in. I’m definitely looking forward to enjoying it now. Good luck with your build. 👍🏼
I don't live in the UK so this topic does not apply to me. However, after watching so many of your other videos I simply could not just skip over it. I've got to say that you are a natural teacher. I find that you have the knack of making what could be dry material, engaging and it seems you make all the relevant points and give good reasons or explanations for them. I'm glad to have found your channel. Thank you for all you've done to share and teach.
Hands down, the best conversion series for people in the UK ... thanks Greg and looking forward to seeing where your travels take you over the next year 👍
...and here we are dear Greg, in 2024, 1st of February, sending off yet another application for 'change of class' to our 2015 Sprinter. This is our third attempt. First time, we were point-blank refused, the second time, using the exact same pics, we got a re-class, BUT...as a 'Van with Side Windows, meaning they have approved the interior. Now on our third attempt. For good measure, we have taken a pic of the rear with our bicycle strapped to it, rather than it being inside. We have had Police Officers agree that they see it as a Campervan, those previous myopic peeps in DVLA, don't seem to have the same ocular clarity...We can only hope that this time, we get twenty-twenty vision ...fingers crossed. Thanks for all your videos which helped us when we converted in 2020. :)
Hi Greg, I think you know that what you have been doing isn’t off great interest to me but I think that what you have achieved during this project has been amazing, sincerely, I am in awe. Very best wishes.
Hello John, I really do appreciate that very much. I know the end product is not something that interested in but I hope a few of the workshop videos may have shown some appeal. I have used similar methods that can be applied to all sorts of DIY projects. Thank you for the continued support. 👍🏼
Another video full of information Greg...it’s getting so close to that trip I can almost smell the croissants!!… With all the documents you sent to the DVLA, it’s advisable to send the insurance companies the same if not more....like you said, insurance companies will try and find the slightest thing to not pay you if you need to claim...personal equipment like cameras etc is best to write down where you bought them, how much and images of serial numbers etc, be up front with the information and they can’t look to get out of paying if needed.... It’s been a fantastic series Greg, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it all... well done my friend, now go and enjoy 👍🏼😊😉
Yes, you are dead right there Marc, I had to submit loads of information to get the agreed value. If they have got the information is a clear decision if anything goes wrong.
Greg Virgoe I lost out on a camera once because the shop closed down and I didn’t have the receipt anymore...barstewards dug their nails in and wouldn’t pay out 😡🤬😡 why do we pay high prices with insurance and they argue and refuse to pay out?!?……5 years paying into their company...I was fuming 🤬🤬
We were ony just going over the dense forest of what we will need to do, your timing is immaculate! Thanks for another great video, you're an inspiration!
Great explanation and guide video Greg 👍🏼 One thing I found was my insurance also became a problem as the company who insured my van didn’t offer campervan insurance once I’d changed the logbook. It ended up costing me far more to insure as it wasn’t a recognised company who’d converted it.
I had to change too as AXA van insurance would not cover me for a motorhome.I guess they think that if you have done a self-build they view it as a bit more risk than a professional build? I don't know. My insurance wasn't much cheaper at all really so for me it wasn't a major saving.
Nice video - very clear. Having done this a few times now I've had no issues, just make sure the pics are really clear and cover everything on the list. On one van they did ask for it to be inspected at the local DVLA office, but that may have been because it was very local to us. I'm sure they wouldn't make you travel any distance if you have good clear photos.
They have got rid of most of the DVLA offices now and everything is done online or by post. I can't move it until the V5 comes back and I can get it MOT'd and Taxed anyway :D With all the info I have given them I cannot see any problems, I hope.
I've really enjoyed watching your build videos,Greg, great attention to detail has made a really good Van.I'm a motorhome owner since my retirement as an international haulier a few years back, and now travel Europe for most of the year.Hope you and your wife enjoy your "gap year" travelling the continent,it will be a learning curve for a few weeks, you soon know that the important things are deisol, water,Gas and food! try to never run out of either and you'll be fine!Good luck with your journey and look forward to seeing your progress on video,I'm still working through of resvisiting places in Europe where I worked with the lorry, but never had chance to explore.Regards Paul
Hi,Greg,I don't know about experienced, just old! I started driving in Europe in the early '70s travelling from UK to the Middle East and worked on international haulage until 2014 and have seen many changes in that time.I also travelled in a VW combo van with my family from the late '70s.I'm sure, having watched your build videos that you have spent time planning your trip and route options. Now there are many internet sites and apps for camping spots and Aires which give members feedback and site locations which I find very useful as well as many TH-cam channels from travellers like ourselves.I'm sure you'll have your toolbox with you when you travel for any enroute "modifications" to the van!.I now have a 2016 Fiat based m.home which I bought 2 years ago, after the first trip in it I came home and fitted another large roof vent above the fixed bed,and when at home in Devon,I am constantly changing things on the van, solar panel fitted, extra leisure battery, inverter, window and door locks(security important, both when sleeping and when parked up for sight seeing)Just back from trip to Switzerland and N.Italy I'fitted all-round camera system and about to upgrade water tanks and pump.I' a great believer in travelling in comfort, and with today's technology it can be easy,if expensive! to live in the van in a civilised many wherever you are.I home for family Christmas, now, but still planning next trip in January to Spain and the Pyrenees.Life's too short to spend it in one place, good luck enjoy.Paul
Hello Paul, just wanted to say a massive thank for mentioning the aires de camping cars we have found them to be brilliant for the first week of our trip and have used them exclusively and travelled completely ad hoc with no forward planning. Will Feature in my France videos... Cheers
Once again Greg, thanks for the clear straightforward advice. I’ve been fitting the 12v electrics today, split charger & controller now fitted and we’re almost sorted with plumbing and heating connections. The time to advise DVLA of the changes is fast approaching and hopefully we’ll meet all the requirements ready for our trip to Europe in the New Year. It’s surprised me just how much work goes into a van conversion and your videos have certainly helped me a great deal. Thanks for all your help.
I appreciate your thorough and professional approach to this very important step. Some people won't otherwise be made aware of the seriousness of proper registration and insurance.
Hey Greg. Well sorted video of the process involved for getting the van changed over. I realise this vid is about a year old now, but something I would like to add regarding my change over. I converted a Transit jumbo 17seater minibus in 2017. This had a weight of over 3.5 tons (4.2 i think) I would need it down graded to 3.5t because of licencing issues when I reach 70 in a couple of years. At the time I was paying £165 road tax (RFL) if I remember correctly. I thought it was going to be registered as a PLG and RFL cost £260 When I was sorting it all out and getting the weight certificate they came back to me and told me the RFL would be £570 per year.......WTF!!!!!!! Naturally i wasn't going to wear that!!. As i have a house in France, and am now retired I decided to instead export it to France and get it changed over here. Yes it was difficult and time consuming, it was also expensive, but NOT £570 expensive. AND over here there is no road fund licence plus MOT,s only every other year. Win,Win in my mind. ( DVLA olo you) Hope to see you on the road some time. All the best CVD
Excellent info Greg, I think half the folk at DVLA watch your videos anyway😄 I’ve loved every one of them. It’s like I’ve found a gem 💎 Thanks for sharing 👍😄
LOL I did wonder if any of them would recognise the name when the form turned up. I should have just given them a link to this channel and not included any photos :D Thanks as always for all your support, must catch up again soon.
This was absolutely great. So well explained and it certainly took a little more fear out of my first-ever van conversion. Will be following your valuable guidance and will make sure to make purchases where needed via your affiliate links. Amazingly valuable delivery, not sure you are aware how much this helps.... thanks a million Greg !!!
Just please check on the gov website as the requirements have changed since I made this video. I know a few people that have managed to change their van recently so it is still possible to get it done. Best wishes 🙏🏼😊
@@GregVirgoe Thank you so much, Greg I will look into this. The 2016 Sprinter van is still in my drive - untouched for now as I live in Greater London and the Mayor had just announced the new ULEZ zone right after my purchase. It's Eu5 so it should be scrapped... Bit devastated, to say the least. Not sure anymore if it is worth converting. Such is life.... Again thanks for everything and I hope you have an amazing Christmas❣
I got insurance that had the conversion built in, so they new it was a panel van and I was required to convert it within six months. That worked out well for me.
6 months is a good amount of time, AXA only gave me 90days which considering I was working full time was nothing, which is why we decided to take it off the road all together and declared it SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification)
I just got my Crafter, and arranged insurance via Flux Direct, the policy is with Trinity. The policy allows the full 12 months to convert, and the option to renew with the same arrangement, and includes 90 day western European cover. Price was reasonable too, and the time frame takes away any pressure to rush the build. Suited me perfectly.
Fab informative video as always Greg! I've seen some DVLA requests come back (self build campervan page on Facebook) stating it doesn't look like a motor caravan on the outside so they've had to add graphics to make it look less like a panel van with windows. Hopefully yours passes without a hitch 😎👍🏻
I read an article that said they had to relax that ruling as you see manufactured campers without graphics, take VW for example We shall see, mine does look like a big white van with windows LOL
Greg, I'm having an absolute nightmare with DVLA, DVSA and Insurance companies, I'm considering giving up the project altogether. I have a Sprinter 516 MWB, which I bought straight from the Police. It's a twin rear axle and rated 5000kg. Firstly, no class 4 MOT stations would do the MOT, claiming I had to get it MOTd at a proper lorry station. I had to pre-book it 30 days in advance with an HGV MOT station, which cost me £140. Baring in mind this was a garage which had the DVSA MOT guys partnered up within their garage's vicinity. They had claimed that they were only responsible for the booking and not for doing the MOT itself. So I arrive on the day to be told by the actual DVSA guty that he was not able to do it as it was previously MOTd by the police as a class 4, a privilege available to the Police only, and not to members of the public. I was told to get it rebooked once I had re-registered it as an HGV, get it MOTd and then re-apply for it to be downrated to a class 4. It would have been rude not to kick off at this stage. The garage man (who I had paid £140) then had quiet words with the (DVSA) MOT man, came back and said he'll do the MOT as a class 4 and said that I needed to convert it following the registration process which you've illustrated beautifully and simply in your video above. Anyway, if this was not enough to do a man's nut in? I have insurance companies now telling me they have no record showing it as a 516 model, which is quite apparent from the comparison sites I get quotes from. I do an online (the van insurer) quote and I am forced to accept the highest model they have which is a 316. Following this I go through the telephone stage in the quotation process by various agencies/ brokers, this takes time. Everything just halts to a standstill, the insurance guys are thinking we've just wasted our time here, and are probably not going to get a penny for all the work we've just put in, and i am left there with no result. This process has been repeated many times. Mate, you are probably thinking, so what do you not need to help me with, if anything at all, and may be left without knowing where to begin. I just need someone with the right knowledge or simply need a bit of direction, and tell me what you would do in this situation. If you could guide us a little this would be much appreciated. Cheers mate!
Ok, let me just clarify the relevant MOT classes first. Class 4 is for Motor Caravans and Light Good Vehicles up to 3000kg Class 7 is for Light Good Vehicles between 3000kg up to 3500kg Generally, a vehicle over 3500kg would require an HGV test. However.... If your van conversion has its body type amended to Motor Caravan it can be tested as Class IV regardless of weight so long as it does not carry goods and you declare that before testing This is an extremely useful article and I suggest getting your body type changed if not done so already and find a friendly MOT test centre :D www.ukmotorhomes.net/motorhome-faqs/motorhome-mots
Sorry, I did mention that '...the man, came back and said he'll do the MOT as a class 4 and said that I needed to convert it following the registration process...', but did not tell you that I had taken him up upon the offer. So yes I now have MOT. My greatest task and predicament lies with the insurance class or type, what I explained in the latter part of my comment to you Greg. Thanks!
Greg Virgoe yep found them. By the way that article was POWERFUL! Full of twists and turns! Loved the legal debate between Uk motor homes and the department of transport. Surely, I knowing what I know now I have a case to get that £140 refunded as they have in effect charged me for an HGV MOT where I was given a class 4 MOT? the cheek of the man who had me believe he was giving me a squeeze by not charging me for it, helping me out... For me especially mate, it was kind of a happy ending! Cheers!
@@bornnomad8045 You may also want to think about having the Gross Vehicle Weight downgraded to 3500kg. Then anyone can drive it on a full UK driving licence, which opens up your market if you sell in future. Not an issue to those like myself with a pre-1997 licence, but those who passed 1997 on must take an additional test. If you are having issues with the model number, pop in for a friendly chat with a Mercedes van dealership and your VIN number. They may be able to put something in writing for a small fee that could smooth the path with DVLA and any insurers.
Nice clear video Greg. If your V5C doesn't come back with a gold star I'll eat my hat! Just one point, I printed out my pictures on a colour laser. I added (photoshoped) text of the registration, date and description at the bottom of each printout. I submitted 21 pictures in total and my van was succeesfully re-registered in just over 2 weeks.
Sorry, still not finished. I've been bogged down on software issues in my work and it's too cold and dark at night to get out on the van. Hope to have a clear weekend though.
I've only managed to catch the end of your video series and enjoying your travel videos now. I just came back to this one as I'm sending my V5C off in the morning with the accompanying bits. I think I've covered everything! Someone tried to tell me I would need some decals but I've ignored them.
I've read loads of anecdotes on the Web about van conversions going through this process, and even though they ticked off every requirement and included photos, the dvla refused to reclassify as a motor caravan, stating that it's mostly what it looks like externally and if it still mostly looks like a panel van then it still is one (as far as descriptions that the police may go by) - they would only reclassify as a panel van with windows. Hopefully they're less hostile these days! Best of luck.
Wishwader, it will be interesting to see as other than one window per side and a few hook ups my van dies still look like a van predominantly, still waiting for the V5 to return 🤕😳
brilliant video Greg ive just sat down and done my v5 and i have pictures getting printed so i can now send all the documents away from monday, so pleased i found this video and your links were really helpful so thanks a lot for sharing hope your both staying safe in the south of portugal hopefully i'll meet with you all at some point this year take care of eachother
Fab video very well explained straight to the point the problem i've got is i bought a panel van allready converted to a campervan every thing is how it should be but it is still registered as a panel van do you have to have receipts for the work carried out as i or the previous owner does not have as i want to register it as a campervan
No, you can do it without the receipts however the process now is much harder with more external criteria to comply with. please check the latest info on the government website, it now has to look very much like a camper from the outside.
Hi Greg Q. A friend of mine is currently converting his Merc (very similar spec to yours as it goes) and he is now looking to alter the vehicle classification also. In addition to the points you have made here, he has also been told he needs to add 2 different colour stripes down the side “so other road users can clearly tell it is a camper”. This seems bonkers and yet another red tape waste of time....have you come across this also? Ps as a building contractor experienced in most trades I have to say I cannot fault a single piece of your work here. From the spec, application, approach and super clear tutorials. First class mate 👍🏻
It was the DVLA standpoint that it needs to look like a camper from the outside. I'm sure I have read an article somewhere recently that said they have relaxed that ruling. Not all manufacturer's factory built campers (VW for instance) have fancy graphics on the side.
@@GregVirgoe As far as I can see looking at some reviews of factory panel van conversions not all of the have a 6'/1.8m bed and at least one had a free standing table which was touted as being able to be used outside the van (it looked like a regular picnic table) Of course the DVLA have to come up with some standard where self builds are concerned so in the end you just have to comply. As for decals/stripes, I purchased a set but I'll only fit them if required, hopefully 2 x 100w solar panels on the roof will be sufficient to make it look like a campervan rather than a commercial vehicle.
Just found your series, this is a great guide, however DVLA don't always agree to change the V5. I converted a Vivaro a couple of years ago, everything by the book but DVLA refused my application saying that if the police where following the van it still looks like a panel van! even though I had a rear door mounted spare wheel, definitely not a normal panel van look. I guess it just depends if you get the DVLA jobs worth on the day or not!
Excellent vid as always Greg 👍 The photos of the van are looking very good 👍 looking forward to seeing the full van tour Best Regards to you and Lou 👍😀🐾
Greg Virgoe that are of Scotland is amazing and you can only get to it with a canoe 👍 The dry suit makes life easy we just have our normal clothes under them Best Regards 👍😀🐾
I'm gutted, and this will shock you but I have sold the Triumph. Sorry to disappoint you. We are planning to be away for a minimum of a year and hopefully much longer. I'm not talking a motorbike on this Europe trip as we need the space for other things. When we return to England and put down permanent roots again I will get another bike. It would not be good to leave the bike in storage for so long not being used. I can always get another bike no problem :D
Another great video Greg. Did you have to inform them of the change in weight to the converted vehicle? Here in France I believe that motor caravans that are being registered in France have to go through an inspection above and beyond the CT (MoT) the inspection includes gas and electrical safety checks as well as other things.
Thanks Greg youve inspired me to get a sprinter,, that was very interesting details you gave great information,, hope you and the family are OK in this time 👍
Another great video Greg and timely as I'm quite close to being ready to apply for the registration change. I'm looking forward to your solar panel install, I have the cables installed and the charge controller is in transit (as opposed to in Transit ;-) I have 2 x 100w panels sitting ready to fit, just waiting for a bit of settled weather. I'm considering bolting my panels together and mounting them in a frame built from aluminium box section which I'll attach to the roof using Stixall/Sikaflex etc.
I have fitted slotted channel to each gutter using both sikaflex and self tapping screws. I have bolted the panels together using M8 aluminium rivnuts. Using aluminium angle to bolt the panels to the slotted channels with channel nuts and M8 bolts. 👍🏼
been loving your video's, just a question regarding down plating, I have just bought a minibus to convert with a 3.9T plate rating, what is the process of getting it lowered to 3.5T? keep up the good work👍
Once again Gregg a well presented thoroughly detailed video, as always. Thank you. I wish you all best on your travels with the camper, I know you will enjoy. 👌
Hi Greg I have a question to you. Can we pass MOT with a camper van that is registered as a panel van on DVLA? Or do we need to register it first as a camper van on DVLA and then we can pass the MOT? Looking forward to your answer, love your videos! 👍 Edit: Our insurance provider knows that the van is a motor home and insured as a motor home camper van. We just finished the conversion now and the MOT is due January 2022.
It’s very difficult now to get the V5 changed to motor caravan for self builders. I think it would come back as a van with windows. MOT can be done at any time.
@@GregVirgoe Following on from this question, why did you go for the change to Motor Campervan from Panel Van? Would it not have been easier to just leave it as it was or would that also be frowned upon given all the alterations you had made?
I'm hoping it will be my Xmas video release. All being well it will be on the road and I can take it to a nice location for the shoot. Hopefully, these few photos have given you a bit more a glimpse of the van.
I reckon the main reason for re-registering your van as A motor caravan was because if you decide to have a drink in your converted van and you have the keys on you you’ll be done for drink-driving but if it’s classed as a motor caravan you won’t
@@GregVirgoe If you are going to drink and vanlife then it's important to swivel the seats, only enter and leave the van via the side door, cover the windscreen. The one thing you must not do is sit in the drivers seat, don't put the key in the ignition.
Excellent well explained video as always Greg, can I ask, you mentioned receipts for the DVLA and the Insurance company, did you send copies or originals, and did DVLA return them or not. Maybe you haven't got them back yet. Cheers Ed
Most of my receipts are electronic as I bought the items online so I just printed further copies I photocopied a few, DVLA didn't ask for originals and I'm not expecting to get any of that info back
hi Greg, love the series and gained a lot of confidence to get stuck into our own build. We are following a very similar plan to yourselves with a long wheelbase high roof and high bed. My query is with regards to weight and how close when fully laden were you to the 3.5 tonne limit?
With all our belongings in we are close to that full weight which is why I fitted the airbags to take some of the strain off the rear suspension. These bigger vans have less carrying capacity as the van itself already weighs about 2.4T
@@GregVirgoe Thank you for the prompt reply it is appreciated. I currently have a Fiamma f80 4m awning in my basket and am a little concerned that the extra 34kg might push me over. Do you consider that we have capacity to still add this? We are keen mountain bikers and that's the priority for having a high roof and integral garage. First things loaded bikes and then beer and food!!
Greg, if you're not careful you'll eventually finish this video series and you'll have a lot of people who've become addicted to your van build having trouble moving on. I'll be one of them. Ever think about a TV series? I'm very nearly serious. And just think, once you have a TV series, that qualifies you to become President of the United States. Never mind the born in the USA issue, we can work around that can't we? Think it over Greg, you'll have my vote!
Hi vincent, I’m on the fence with door locks as it kind of advertises you got something of value inside. I would recommend a simple immobiliser switch linked to the ignition. I’m having a tracker fitted to my van and we have a dash cam to record when driving. Leave curtains drawn so people can see it’s a camper bit leave nothing out on display. That’s what I’m going with anyway. 😀
Greg thank you very much for that and the videos for the build you da man!!!. I have a question when you fitted the air suspension at the back of the van did it make a difference? And regarding the van weight after conversion was you ok? I'm doing a van conversion at the moment and a little worried about overall weight at the end of the build staying within the max weight specified cheers again your videos are easily the best well done.
Yes the air suspension makes a massive difference. The ride height is better, there is less body roll when cornering and also helps if we need to level the van. We were very close to the limit so we have to limit ourselves to what we carry in the garage.
Its just that Sam (crafty blinders) took his van over the weight limit and his van was registered as something else . I have a merc van and thinking of doing the same as you but Sam also fitted some torsion bar at front along with new shocks just wondering which way to go. Do you think its worth doing the front as well .My have to uprate rims and tyres . The best thing is after my build take van to a weigh bridge and go from there.
Thank you for the detailed video. I have a question tho, idk if it was asked befor but here it goes, what if you bought a modified van and you don’t have the receipts from the items fitted when you send the v5 and the photos?
I've bought most of the fittings and equipment off ebay and private sellers off gumtree and similar,so I don't have all paper receipts, how do I resolve the lack of paper receipts?.. and thank you for all your videos, so informative and have saved me many hours and headaches.
Thanks for this & the reminder on the receipts. However if you only have very limited receipts (most of the conversion was a caravan strip out before I bought the van) how do you evidence it? Also please do a video specifically on likely reasons for failing and "Campervan tables" (options etc. As for many this is the least useful part of the conversion)
Rick Seymour, I dint think the receipts are essential. However the DVLA have currently stopped converting vans and I believe they are reviewing this situation as do many were being turned down on appearances but that was not one of the criteria.
I believe there is a requirement for some discreet "camper" decals to be added also now, and that the ANPR system does now recognise commercial vehicles that are changed to motorhomes - if you've changed your V5C of course.
Hi Greg, I’ve been binge watching your videos, great stuff and love your attention to detail. Do you do a video on the insurance side of things. Not sure if I can use a van during conversion on a panel van policy or not.
You really are quickly becoming my go-to on all things campervan, Greg! Thank you! Can I infer that I will not be able to register my panel van as a motor caravan because I am not installing windows on the side (I will install a skylight on the roof to let light in)? And therefore I won't be able to benefit from cheaper insurance? Thanks, Greg!!
Thanks for the detailed help here. I have just had my V5C back after submitting the preformed letter and photographs, I bought the vehicle, VW T5, second hand so have no receipts. DVLA have changed the body type to "Van/side windows" on the V5C, but, as, according to DVLA , "externally the vehicle, apart from the addition of side/rear windows (I have windowless rear doors), remains as it was originally constructed by the manufacturer. As the vehicle cannot be identified externally as a motor caravan the body type can't be changed." All a bit confusing, I wonder now what I have to put on the outside to make it look like a motor caravan.
Hi Greg, loving the video series, you're doing such a good job of explaining everything in detail. I've just bought my Crafter, and about to start on my conversion having gained so much knowledge from your videos. Sorry if you've already discussed this subject, but I have a question about payload. How did you keep track of the weight you were adding to the van, to ensure you ended up within the 3500kg total weight. I've done my initial estimates and it's all looking very close to weight limit. Just wondered how things ended up for you, especially as you are planning to carry a motorbike sometimes as well. Any hints and tips very welcome :o)
It mentions sending receipts at the bottom of the first page of their PDF document. lol :O Good news is your van passed and doesn't have fancy graphics on the side so that's the one thing that everyone seems to be worried about with van builds?
Hi, new wheels are not in the budget but I am having the steel ones painted black. The van is booked in next April for the exterior, but that's as much as I can say right now. All will be revealed at Camp Quirky next year and of course, there will be a video to follow.
Recently noticed a few TH-cam videos about the changes DVLA have just made in relation to getting a DIY build re-registered as a Motor Caravan. If left unchallenged then it will have a deep effect on not just Pop-tops but also a hike in the price we will have to pay for a high top van.
At least it will stop vw transporter van prices being silly because you fitted a bed and a table .A transit that’s worth a grand yet a vw transporter with a million miles that’s a old builders van is worth 3 grand
I’ve just sent my V5 off so this was good timing, my insurance went from £220 to £495 after the conversion which was a bit annoying (agreed value of £32000) I paid £13150 for the van. I got caught speeding a few years ago doing 70mph on a dual carriageway (national speed limit) in a van so that 10mph does make a difference😂
Peter Westlake-Webb Hi there that’s very unusual my van is agreed value of £35k and it’s only £240 full comprehensive and all the extras ! I used Adrian Flux Hope that helps Regards Dave, Jo and Louie 👍😀🐾
I was hoping someone would notice, from our good friends across the pond Kyle and Olivia, great channel. th-cam.com/channels/lkhrrakVty75SWLJIbcxDA.html
Hello, no the road tax is exactly the same at £250 a year. My insurance dropped from £440 as a van to £350 with agreed value of £25k, £3.5k contents cover and 365 days European cover included. Insured with the camping and caravanning club, I was already a member 😃
Hi, another very useful and informative video, great job👍👍👍. I just checked out that Lagun table leg, bloody hell what is it made out of, platinum! 😢😢.
Hiya Greg! Thanks for the most informative video. Really appreciate this. Subscribed and thumbs'ed up. :) I do have a question though; You mention about the bed needing to be 6ft or 1800mm's long? Where did you get this figure from as all I can see on gov's recommendations is that it needs to be fixed etc.
Joshua Parris some of the tulles have been amended since I created this video. It was 6ft at the time this was filmed. Pleased check the latest requirements. 😃
Hi Greg hope all is well, I’m in the process of converting my van and your videos have been extremely helpful. I have a question regarding the dvla changing the classification and it’s to do with windows. I’m the documentation it states two windows on at least one side. I’m planning on having a window in the door and also opposite like yours on the other side and wondered if two windows in the rear doors would count or does it mean “side” literally? One could say the the rear is a side of the vehicle ?
Just having a closer look at that template letter. It says 'I have completed the conversion myself'. I wonder if I should just say 'I didn't complete the conversion myself'...I might just ring them, lol.
Holistic-Healing UK you can of course adapt the wording completely to suit your circumstances. You have purchased a van converted by others is has all the relevant components and here are the photos etc Just adapt it no problems 😀
Thanks for this! How long did it take for them to get back to you and complete the conversion on the v5? Only asking as my insurance is up next month! Thanks.
Hey GregI'm about half way through my build. Anticipate starting the internal build soon. I was thinking of taking my van to a weighbridge to see how my overall load is adding up before I progress. I saw on you V5 return your Van is 3.5 Tonnes and wondered what overall weight your build has come to as I know you are carrying a motorbike?
I was surprised to see that you did not need to get the vehicle weighed and submit a change for the gross weight. I would think that they would want this information to assure that nobody exceeds the chassis weight recommended by the manufacturer.
The gross weight does not change, it is still 3500kg for this vehicle, whatever body type it is. It is the driver's legal responsibility to make sure the vehicle is not overweight before driving.
Absolutely phenomenal series, Greg! Thanks for everything you've put into this mate. I had a quick question I'm hoping you (Or maybe someone else) can answer: In this vid you mention that a bed must be at least 6 feet long, to adhere to the DVLA rules. I'm in the planning stages just now, and since I'm on the shorter side, had planned to have my bed across the van, making it 170cm. My question is, where is the minimum bed length explicitly stated? I've been on the .gov pages over and over, and can't find this bit of info anywhere. Hope you can help. Cheers!
Hi again Greg, I was reading on the Facebook South central meet up group about the DVLA's reluctance to change vans to motor homes. I am really worried as we bought a Mercedes Sprinter minibus. We've bolted in 4 seat belts into the frame of the van for the kids with rivnuts etc. what will this mean if they refuse the change? Will it be illegal to allow the kids to drive in the back? What would this failure of change of use mean for us? Also, we've recycled a lot of materials from the local tip. So we only have receipts for the solar panel equipment , the new mattress and curtain fabric, bought secondhand from eBay. Can you help? Kind Regards. Sara
Hi Greg, loving this series, a man after my own heart, mechanical engineer who loves motorbikes and enjoys making things! Just tried your .gov link and it doesn't work, the only info I can find on converting a van to motor caravan states you need graphics and an awning which you don't have so wondered how you got on converting your V5? Hope your enjoying touring! Cheers, Craig.
Hi. We are just finishing off our conversion and were interested in how you managed to get your Sprinter reclassified as a motor caravan when it only has 1 additional window on either side. Guidance from DVLA seems to indicate that you need at least 2 additional windows on at least 1 side. This does not include the passenger and driver door windows. From DVLA guidance, "2 or more windows on at least one side of the main body (this does not include windows on the driver or passenger doors) to provide a reasonable amount of daylight into the living accommodation". Any help is appreciated!
This video was released Nov 2018 so back then it was a bit easier. I focused on the thing that had made permanent change to the vehicle use and submitted many more photos of items not necessary on their requirement list but proved it was now a permanent campervan.
Hello , i have a doble decker bus and iwas going to change the body type but the new regulations have change where a bus is not a body type they will change , now i can’t get a MOT. As a bus anymore since i don’t have all the seats inside , do you have any idea if there is a way around it ? Thank you , great channel
hi greg great vid and thank's for all the help=) but that template letter won't work just clicked on to it and also i'v bin'd my invoices Oop's got most of the stuff off ebay like cheers Danny
The rules have changed since making this video and got more difficult to get motor caravan status now most only get van with windows. Check gov website for latest info 👍🏼
@@GregVirgoe yes i did last night the only thing I haven’t got is graphics but i do have a RS MOTORHOMES on the side do you think i’d get away with that or should i get some sort of graphics on side ?? I’m putting an awning on anyway and thats 1 of the things you must have now Cheer for getting back to me mate
You seem to have been lucky to get your changed now.. as loads are getting refused for looking exactly like yours .. they are now saying its just a van with windows... my transit looks just like yours on the outside and I've been refused as they say it looks like a van with windows...im at a loss like loads ..theres a group on facebook just about this issue,,, it seems it depends who looks at your applicationn.. any ideas greg ? I'm at a loss .. they won't tell me what I've got to do ..
The Norfolk Treasure Hunter I took loads of extra photos of all the hook ups, solar, roof fans and the shower toilet and all the permanent fixtures that make it a camper none of these are on their list but it proves the van has been permanently changed.
Hello Greg. Thanks for replying. Mine is fine inside they’ve said But the outside they are saying looks like a van with windows. Much the same as yours does. I’m at loss what to do. I can only think that fitting an awning might help but they won’t say anything to help you. It’s crazy. As I wanted a stealth camper. And then others get the nod and others get refused. It’s crazy. No happy medium at the DVLA Dave
Hello Greg still catching up on your valuable information :) we have purchased our van and slowly getting started. I was going over the DVLA check list and on external permanent features it says about an awning bar .. is this a needed ? Cheers mate
i realize it is kind of randomly asking but do anyone know of a good website to watch new tv shows online ?
@Brodie Gus I would suggest FlixZone. Just search on google for it :)
@Silas Carter yup, have been watching on Flixzone for months myself =)
@Silas Carter thanks, signed up and it seems like they got a lot of movies there :D I really appreciate it!
NotSunkYet I have to say a huge thanks for watching a video that doesn’t apply and for such great feedback. Many thanks 😊
Hands down, the best conversion series for people in the UK ... thanks Greg and looking forward to seeing where your travels take you over the next year 👍
Thanks very much for such great comment, hope you continue to enjoy the videos to come.
...and here we are dear Greg, in 2024, 1st of February, sending off yet another application for 'change of class' to our 2015 Sprinter.
Another video full of information Greg...it’s getting so close to that trip I can almost smell the croissants!!…
With all the documents you sent to the DVLA, it’s advisable to send the insurance companies the same if not more....like you said, insurance companies will try and find the slightest thing to not pay you if you need to claim...personal equipment like cameras etc is best to write down where you bought them, how much and images of serial numbers etc, be up front with the information and they can’t look to get out of paying if needed....
Really glad that has helped you.
It is a very simple process really
I can't move it until the V5 comes back and I can get it MOT'd and Taxed anyway :D
With all the info I have given them I cannot see any problems, I hope.
Hi Paul,
It would be very interesting to hear some of your advice and stories as you sound like a very experienced European traveller.
In the long run Cliff it's a considerable amount of your own hard earned cash that is at stake, so its totally in your own interest I feel.
I thought it was going to be registered as a PLG and RFL cost £260
When I was sorting it all out and getting the weight certificate they came back to me and told me the RFL would be £570 per year.......WTF!!!!!!!
Naturally i wasn't going to wear that!!.
As i have a house in France, and am now retired
I decided to instead export it to France and get it changed over here.
Yes it was difficult and time consuming, it was also expensive, but NOT £570 expensive.
AND over here there is no road fund licence plus MOT,s only every other year.
Win,Win in my mind. ( DVLA olo you)
Hope to see you on the road some time.
I should have just given them a link to this channel and not included any photos :D
Thanks as always for all your support, must catch up again soon.
I read an article that said they had to relax that ruling as you see manufactured campers without graphics, take VW for example
We shall see, mine does look like a big white van with windows LOL
Class 4 is for Motor Caravans and Light Good Vehicles up to 3000kg
Class 7 is for Light Good Vehicles between 3000kg up to 3500kg
Generally, a vehicle over 3500kg would require an HGV test. However....
If your van conversion has its body type amended to Motor Caravan it can be tested as Class IV regardless of weight
so long as it does not carry goods and you declare that before testing
This is an extremely useful article and I suggest getting your body type changed if not done so already and find a friendly MOT test centre :D
www.ukmotorhomes.net/motorhome-faqs/motorhome-mots
Sorry, I did mention that '...the man, came back and said he'll do the MOT as a class 4 and said that I needed to convert it following the registration process...', but did not tell you that I had taken him up upon the offer. So yes I now have MOT.
My greatest task and predicament lies with the insurance class or type, what I explained in the latter part of my comment to you Greg. Thanks!
You need to go to an insurance company that deals with modified vehicles.
Like Adrian Flux for example or similar
I actually went to the local Boots to get proper photos lol
Ping me over some photos of the finished van please Rob?
Sorry, still not finished. I've been bogged down on software issues in my work and it's too cold and dark at night to get out on the van. Hope to have a clear weekend though.
I've only managed to catch the end of your video series and enjoying your travel videos now. I just came back to this one as I'm sending my V5C off in the morning with the accompanying bits. I think I've covered everything! Someone tried to tell me I would need some decals but I've ignored them.
Cmdr Pugwash as you have seen my van has no decals at all but it was changed ok
Greg Virgoe - you could always get some funky livery ;-)
@@Wishwader, it is booked in April next year, but can't say more than that ;D
Just got my logbook back. A week to the day since I sent it off. My van is now a 6 seater motor caravan.😎
Excellent news Chris, well done mate 👍🏼😊
brilliant video Greg ive just sat down and done my v5 and i have pictures getting printed so i can now send all the documents away from monday, so pleased i found this video and your links were really helpful so thanks a lot for sharing hope your both staying safe in the south of portugal hopefully i'll meet with you all at some point this year take care of eachother
Greg Virgoe yeah that’s true, thanks for the reply 👍🏻
@@GregVirgoe As far as I can see looking at some reviews of factory panel van conversions not all of the have a 6'/1.8m bed and at least one had a free standing table which was touted as being able to be used outside the van (it looked like a regular picnic table) Of course the DVLA have to come up with some standard where self builds are concerned so in the end you just have to comply. As for decals/stripes, I purchased a set but I'll only fit them if required, hopefully 2 x 100w solar panels on the roof will be sufficient to make it look like a campervan rather than a commercial vehicle.
I’ve sent them photos of all my hookup points cut into the side of the van and the roof fans. Hope that clinches the deal. Fingers crossed 🤞🏼
Thanks yet again Greg you certainly making converting a panel van into a motorhome a lot easier.
Glad that has helped you out Ted :D
Greg, Am six months away from my re-classification so very useful detail.. Thanks
Excellent vid as always Greg 👍
The photos of the van are looking very good 👍 looking forward to seeing the full van tour
Best Regards to you and Lou 👍😀🐾
Cheers Dave, I'm enjoying catching up on all your previous videos.
I liked the wild camping ones when you were swimming in what looked like dry suits?
Greg Virgoe that are of Scotland is amazing and you can only get to it with a canoe 👍
The dry suit makes life easy we just have our normal clothes under them
Best Regards 👍😀🐾
Just doing an ex military truck conversion,, this has made things clear as mate cheers
Hi Greg!
Great project!
But where is Triumph?
I was curious!
Will come in the next chapters!
By far the best videos for any conversion, Greg you helped me out no-end. Massive thanks to you
Ant-j Barton you are welcome, thank you for that nice comment.
Another great video! I think the DVLA should put a link to this on their website :-)
I have got to agree with you Linzi Douglas, great idea 😀
Another great video Greg.
Did you have to inform them of the change in weight to the converted vehicle?
Here in France I believe that motor caravans that are being registered in France have to go through an inspection above and beyond the CT (MoT) the inspection includes gas and electrical safety checks as well as other things.
No, the gross weight of the vehicle remains the same at 3500kg
MOT class comes down after conversion if it was 3,5ton or above.
Yes i found that strange? In Australia you have to have the vehicle weighed again once finished as the vehicle weight changes
Thanks Greg youve inspired me to get a sprinter,, that was very interesting details you gave great information,, hope you and the family are OK in this time 👍
paul jojiana thanks for watching my videos and good luck with your build.
been loving your video's, just a question regarding down plating, I have just bought a minibus to convert with a 3.9T plate rating, what is the process of getting it lowered to 3.5T? keep up the good work👍
These are the best guys to speak to they can handle the whole process
www.svtech.co.uk/
Once again Gregg a well presented thoroughly detailed video, as always. Thank you. I wish you all best on your travels with the camper, I know you will enjoy. 👌
Many thanks Johnny, hope you will be following our journey.
Hi Greg I have a question to you.
Can we pass MOT with a camper van that is registered as a panel van on DVLA?
Or do we need to register it first as a camper van on DVLA and then we can pass the MOT?
Looking forward to your answer, love your videos! 👍
Edit: Our insurance provider knows that the van is a motor home and insured as a motor home camper van.
Thanks for info on this, you do make it sound straightforward and I shall use it when I have finished my conversion.
This doesn't pertain to me but I watched it anyway. As always, very informative. Safe travels
Hi Greg, when are you going to show the finished van tour? Thanks.
I'm hoping it will be my Xmas video release.
All being well it will be on the road and I can take it to a nice location for the shoot.
Hopefully, these few photos have given you a bit more a glimpse of the van.
@@GregVirgoe Thanks, looking forward to it.
I reckon the main reason for re-registering your van as A motor caravan was because if you decide to have a drink in your converted van and you have the keys on you you’ll be done for drink-driving but if it’s classed as a motor caravan you won’t
I hadn't thought of that but if you are parked up in an authorised spot for the night that's a valid point i guess.
@@GregVirgoe If you are going to drink and vanlife then it's important to swivel the seats, only enter and leave the van via the side door, cover the windscreen. The one thing you must not do is sit in the drivers seat, don't put the key in the ignition.
David Piper sound advice, thank you 😊
What a Cracking video Greg.. Yr taking the worry and stress out of converting a van 👍🏼🚐💨
Excellent well explained video as always Greg, can I ask, you mentioned receipts for the DVLA and the Insurance company, did you send copies or originals, and did DVLA return them or not. Maybe you haven't got them back yet. Cheers Ed
Most of my receipts are electronic as I bought the items online so I just printed further copies
I photocopied a few, DVLA didn't ask for originals and I'm not expecting to get any of that info back
Looking forward to the solar panels installation video, Greg. Cheers :)
I was working on that today, funnily enough.
Having to beef up my support structure, with three big panels bolted together they are huge! :D
@@GregVirgoe I'm sure it'll turn out great, nice and snug :))
hi Greg, love the series and gained a lot of confidence to get stuck into our own build.
Can't wait to get ours finished by summer hopefully will seen you in Europe . great build and good luck and enjoy
I will look forward to it Andrew, please do keep in touch, always good to check out other van builds :D
Hi Greg, I have a single ring and it did pass the DVLA test.
Thx for info Greg, I’ve not caught up on all the videos yet but do you have any advice for adding security locks to the doors and or alarm systems?
You don’t necessarily need the receipts. It’s proof of the permanent alterations to meet all their criteria is the key thing.
@@GregVirgoe thank you for the clarification and for the fast reply 🍻😍
Yet again a very thorough video explaining the reasons why to change thank you once again.
Great video as always, thank you Greg!
It would be great to see a full van tour video! Do you live in the van already?
Hi Greg, loving the video series, you're doing such a good job of explaining everything in detail. I've just bought my Crafter, and about to start on my conversion having gained so much knowledge from your videos.
Sorry if you've already discussed this subject, but I have a question about payload. How did you keep track of the weight you were adding to the van, to ensure you ended up within the 3500kg total weight. I've done my initial estimates and it's all looking very close to weight limit. Just wondered how things ended up for you, especially as you are planning to carry a motorbike sometimes as well. Any hints and tips very welcome :o)
They didn't ask me for any receipts! Went through without a query or hiccup.
It mentions sending receipts at the bottom of the first page of their PDF document. lol :O
Good news is your van passed and doesn't have fancy graphics on the side
so that's the one thing that everyone seems to be worried about with van builds?
No, I didn't send any receipts either, I bought most of my stuff from Ebay or Amazon, so didn't have much in the way of receipts anyway.
Great information Greg. Thanks for taking the time to put this video together mate.
No problem Dave, grab a copy of the documents below its worth know what you need to do :D cheers
Greg i hope you are going to fit some nice wheels and some nice graphics to the outside this would be nice to see.
Hi, new wheels are not in the budget but I am having the steel ones painted black.
The van is booked in next April for the exterior, but that's as much as I can say right now.
All will be revealed at Camp Quirky next year and of course, there will be a video to follow.
You Tube logo and channel address!! 😀
I used Adrian Flux
Hope that helps
Regards Dave, Jo and Louie 👍😀🐾
One Man and His Whippet Dave Bertholini hello 😀
One Man and His Whippet Dave Bertholini I used them as well, I was surprised at the quote going up so much.
Peter Westlake-Webb Hi I would do some shopping around! 👍😀🐾
Mine was £989 came down to £250 on my t4
Nice shirt Greg. And a top notch build.
I was hoping someone would notice, from our good friends across the pond Kyle and Olivia, great channel.

Cheers Greg, pleased I found this vid, learnt something new here!!!
Nice one Greg. Would a double gas ring camping stove qualify as a permanent cooker?
Hi Greg great videos, was there any change in the vehicle tax?
Hello, no the road tax is exactly the same at £250 a year. My insurance dropped from £440 as a van to £350 with agreed value of £25k, £3.5k contents cover and 365 days European cover included. Insured with the camping and caravanning club, I was already a member 😃
Hi, another very useful and informative video, great job👍👍👍. I just checked out that Lagun table leg, bloody hell what is it made out of, platinum! 😢😢.
A good document to start your build with. Thanks Greg.
Yes it gives you everything you need to know from the word go
I just realised this is an older version. They have updated recently only to make things seem more confusing this time. Sorry for the dumb question!
Joshua Parris no problem don’t worry 😉
Another excellent video !! Thanks Greg 😎
You're welcome Gary
Hi Greg, Thank you for your amazing and informative quality videos. A superb resource for the budding van converter, very much appreciated. Mark
Hi Greg, love your videos!!! Did you have your vehicle weighed after the conversion? was it still under the 3.5 tons? Thanks
Just having a closer look at that template letter. It says 'I have completed the conversion myself'. I wonder if I should just say 'I didn't complete the conversion myself'...I might just ring them, lol.
Holistic-Healing UK you can of course adapt the wording completely to suit your circumstances.
You have purchased a van converted by others is has all the relevant components and here are the photos etc
Just adapt it no problems 😀
@@GregVirgoe Cheers G 😊
Thanks for this! How long did it take for them to get back to you and complete the conversion on the v5? Only asking as my insurance is up next month! Thanks.
NobleGangsta they returned the form in a week. It was very quick I remember. If you allow two week maximum 👍🏼
Thank you very much for all the information, it has been a great help to me. Cheers Jay
No problem Jay, happy to help
Absolutely phenomenal series, Greg! Thanks for everything you've put into this mate. I had a quick question I'm hoping you (Or maybe someone else) can answer: In this vid you mention that a bed must be at least 6 feet long, to adhere to the DVLA rules. I'm in the planning stages just now, and since I'm on the shorter side, had planned to have my bed across the van, making it 170cm. My question is, where is the minimum bed length explicitly stated? I've been on the .gov pages over and over, and can't find this bit of info anywhere. Hope you can help. Cheers!
Thanks Greg, great video, covering it all, is of great help, enjoy touring mate
Excellent inspiration for me to get a van and convert it well done .really enjoyed your videos
Sara
Well done Greg - absolutely clear and to the point.👍👍
Hi Greg, loving this series, a man after my own heart, mechanical engineer who loves motorbikes and enjoys making things! Just tried your .gov link and it doesn't work, the only info I can find on converting a van to motor caravan states you need graphics and an awning which you don't have so wondered how you got on converting your V5? Hope your enjoying touring! Cheers, Craig.
Very informative 👍This has helped me a lot as I'm just about to begin my journey into van life.. 😊👍😎
Hi mate, have you got a link to the drinking water 🚰 tap sink and mixer tap ?
Many thanks, Matt
Hello Matt, all the links you need are in the description of this video th-cam.com/video/AbrxUScYe24/w-d-xo.html
From DVLA guidance,
"2 or more windows on at least one side of the main body (this does not include windows on the driver or passenger doors) to provide a reasonable amount of daylight into the living accommodation". Any help is appreciated!
This video was released Nov 2018 so back then it was a bit easier. I focused on the thing that had made permanent change to the vehicle use and submitted many more photos of items not necessary on their requirement list but proved it was now a permanent campervan.
@@GregVirgoe brilliant thanks for the reply Greg. Good luck with the new project.
Hello , i have a doble decker bus and iwas going to change the body type but the new regulations have change where a bus is not a body type they will change , now i can’t get a MOT. As a bus anymore since i don’t have all the seats inside , do you have any idea if there is a way around it ? Thank you , great channel
hi greg
great vid and thank's for all the help=)
but that template letter won't work just clicked on to it and also i'v bin'd my invoices Oop's got most of the stuff off ebay like

I’m putting an awning on anyway and thats 1 of the things you must have now
Cheer for getting back to me mate
Hi greg did you have any problems getting the V5 changed or was the DVLA happy with the evidence/photos you provided?
I didn’t have any problem. It was prior to the recent stricter changes. I know it is now much harder to do 🥴
You seem to have been lucky to get your changed now.. as loads are getting refused for looking exactly like yours .. they are now saying its just a van with windows...
my transit looks just like yours on the outside and I've been refused as they say it looks like a van with windows...im at a loss like loads ..theres a group on facebook just about this issue,,, it seems it depends who looks at your applicationn.. any ideas greg ? I'm at a loss .. they won't tell me what I've got to do ..
The Norfolk Treasure Hunter I took loads of extra photos of all the hook ups, solar, roof fans and the shower toilet and all the permanent fixtures that make it a camper none of these are on their list but it proves the van has been permanently changed.
Hello Greg. Thanks for replying.
Mine is fine inside they’ve said
But the outside they are saying looks like a van with windows.
Much the same as yours does.
I’m at loss what to do. I can only think that fitting an awning might help but they won’t say anything to help you.
It’s crazy.
As I wanted a stealth camper.
And then others get the nod and others get refused. It’s crazy. No happy medium at the DVLA
