  • @SapphireCrook
    @SapphireCrook 5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    The immediate problems of this:
    - Data processing; who and how is this barrage of 99% harmless data going to do what now?
    - There are just thousands of knives already out there, and you can sharpen a knife, you don't just buy a new one each week. Circulation of monitored knives, adn the fact you cannot be sure if they are properly disposed of... well, good luck.
    - What about screwdrivers, hammers, etc? Where does the definition begin and end?
    - What is the durability and life expectance of the trackers?
    - Okay, so... HOW would the tracker know if it's been disconnected? Say you buy a knife and throw it into the trash. This action is indistinguishable from discarding JUST THE TRACKER unless the UK gov is checking all the garbage and receipts.
    - What's the coverage? Can it be jammed? Are you responsible if the tracker breaks because of a faulty handle allowing fluids to damage it? Are you legally allowed to own an knife with a broken tracker, or is this like car insurance? Can the cops enter your house on suspicion of untracked knives? Are you allowed to carry a knife into an area where the devices cannot broadcast?
    There's... so many flaws, and nothing is actually SOLVED. At best, you end up with a "This knife is linked to this person" like with verified gun purchases, but you can't pre-crime a stabbing by tracking them. If only because the delay between figuring out the anomaly and sending over the cops is MASSIVE compared to how long it takes for a stabbing to do its damage.
    At best, this can tell the gov where and how knives 'flow', but what useful information can really be gathered from it?
    Or possibly just easy scanning. "Hey, beeper says he got a knife." or something cops can use?
    Basically, it's stopping a flood by putting water detectors all over the valley. Good job. We now know we have water.
    What else is new?

      Sapphire Crook Your last example of using large numbers of water detectors to fight floods is actually how tsunami warning systems work. They detect the water levels in the ocean (not at the shore), then a computer detects specifically problematic movement patterns and raises evacuation alarms at likely points of impact. Maybe knife trackers (useless against stabbings) can be used to detect amassing of knives for "undesired" purposes (unlawful food production?, making banned musical instruments? Tree hugging protests?).

    Politicians aren't stupid, they know what they're doing. They've come up with this "solution" it's far cheaper than replacing the experienced police officers that have been let go during the Tories' austerity program. I'm certain that they know that it won't do anything; but it is a faaaar easier way to maintain appearance than implementing any meaningful policy.

    • @OutOfNamesToChoose
      @OutOfNamesToChoose 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, I think that it is rather counterintuitive to mock these false distractions rather than to address problems regarding the austerity program, as they draw attention from the true cause; as lacklustre as it may be. As a long term viewer, I'm disappointed that people in the comments have not taken their due diligence in at least researching and including the causes of the knife crime rise (such as cuts to policing, education and youth services). Yes mockery can entertain, but it is taking the bait of distraction right from the politicians' hands.

    I do understand the desire for the government to do something about a problem. Unfortunately people fixate on objects and what look like simple solutions on the surface.
    The big problem is that people are complicated beasts. No simple solution exists, and any lasting solution is going to require understanding the people involved. Even more difficult is coming up with something that doesn't severely limit individual liberty of people who would never cause harm.

    Also, this would be a huge boon for battery manufacturers. I would expect an AA battery to last less than a day of constant usage for transmitting coordinates. The device would have to be very small to fit into any knife handle (I have seen some small knives.), so that means very small batteries. And the criminal could just refuse to change his batteries.
