About this game:
Have you ever been stuck in a train or subway station, crowded and congested, fighting to get on the escalator? Have you ever wandered around lost, cursing the lack of proper signage? Have you ever thought to yourself “I could design this station better”?
STATIONflow is a game about controlling the flow of thousands of passengers by building and managing an efficient underground train station.

If you're ever designing a game's UI with user-friendliness in mind, just watch ryan's videos and start taking notes
For example, what is the point of the ring rotation element? Players will assume that's just window dressing. They're trying to just grab the arrow with their mouse and it doesnt do what they expect. Just design your game's UI how the player expects it to function. Common UI interaction in day to day computer usage should be your core design principles.
To be fair. If you spend a lot of time in design software it makes sense. But to normal people its a bit to Autocad-y for normal use. Just looks like my day job to me
I was thinking the exact same. I use Revit every day and this was extremely intuitive to me but I guess I just understand the language of the software and assumed everyone else did too
@@snowdevil002 To be fair (and I'll agree, the UI could be better) why wasn't Ryan watching the video? The presentation was clearly dragging the ring around, it wasn't that confusing...
Edit: don't mean for my comment to come off has insulting, he does figure it out, I think it's great that NL takes the time to really explore the games he tries and to detect problems other playtesters may have missed, there's plenty of other examples of bad demonstration on the video.
@@snowdevil002 I mean sure but they clearly show a video using the ring to rotate it. That might be weird one time, but then would be second nature right after. As another person pointed out, it's probably standard for all objects which would be easier to understand than having bespoke rotating elements for each type of object

Before this video even finished I was buying and installing this game...and 5 hours in, I can just tell you, I need to start a new one, because this game....is complicated, and 30 minutes in it is easy. Hour #5? Your head is going to explode trying to think about all the connections you need to make as freaking elderly people cannot use stairs. But wait it gets worse. If you use elevators they are not quick enough to move mass amounts of people so everyone gets backed up, so you have to create mass amounts of escalators so you can keep them moving but where will they fit!!!!!
Moral of the story is, as more people come, the traffic of their feet alone makes it complicated. Which I strangely appreciate.
10/10 would play as elderly screamed about the stairs.
I love how this video is a very interesting look into how people learn. Ryan does far better at the game when allowed to experiment on his own rather than being given a set of video instructions to follow. In comparison, a lot of people would much rather be given the rules and tools rather than try to figure them out on their own.
I think you mean Egg does far better completely not reading the instructions and flailing around for 5 mins.

NL, you're an actual genius but I am currently OUT OF MY GOURD about the fact that the tooltip says "stairs will have signs attached to both ends" and the video shows them clicking on the stairs to change the sign, not making new signs. Also, this game looks really cool

Fun fact I came across: This game is actually made by Tak Fujii, the Ninety-Nine Nights director from the infamous 2010 Konami E3 conference. Didn't expect that.

NL only struggles with tutoriales whenever NL doesn't follow the instructions of said tutorials.

I've seen this game elsewhere and wasn't super interested in the Northerlion Tries, but then I heard the ominous murmurs about it in the Before We Leave episode...

I always enjoy watching you play puzzle games, especially the zachtronics stuff. I'd enjoy maybe even a short mini series on this in the future, or just any transport game like Open Transport Tycoon.
Edit: Good to know the seemingly unintuitive UI is just an egg problem.

I know signs are helpful. If NL were to actually design a building I entered, I think I may just get annoyed at how many signs there are though.

I think i've run into a glitch. It seems that the ad has overwritten the video with another video which is a trailer for one of Quibi's shows... I was wondering why I coudn't skio the 1 minute and 42 second ad. Going tk the end of it acts as though the video ended and reccomendationsof what to watch next pop up.
I hope cities skyline have one DLC like this to design the station.

edit: After buying it and playing for about 2 hours, it does indeed get a lot more complex and I'm enjoying it a lot.
Every time NL posts a new “Northernlion tries” and it’s not a back log because he told us the date it came out and the game is a people management game, I gain so much power that I become my own egg daddy... and this has only happened in this very episode which means that I have ascended, for merely a brief moment, the nirvana that is the ‘egg daddy’.

Hey NL, you should definitely check out Receiver 2 on Steam for NL Tries, it just came out Tuesday. It's a mechanics driven game about simulating the functions of a handgun and trying to make your way through buildings in a post-apocalyptic setting. Feels like it would be up your alley. The UI does seem overly complex. Just in the signs case, why cant you drag an arrow, why click the arrow than spin a wheel. I am on your side egg.
They probably generalized their rotation functionality for all placeable objects.

Whoever designed the corridor construction can't have played a game before. It's clunkyness is reason enough not to buy this. Otherwise it looks like an interesting game.
